Talking Point: What Was the Best Super NES Game Ever?
Posted by James Newton
It's time to decide
It's 20 years ago today since the Super Nintendo saw official release in North America, and over the following years it amassed a truly incredible library of games still thought of today as some of the finest ever.
But what really was the top dog on Nintendo's 16-bit wonder machine? Did the 96 levels of Super Mario World do it for you? Are you wowed by the speed of F-Zero to this very day, or does one of the console's many phenomenal RPGs still hold top spot in the chart of your heart?
You've read what we consider to be the 10 greatest Super Nintendo games, and now we want to know what you think's the best and why. We've also set up a poll on the Nintendo Life Facebook page to see which game comes out on top: be sure to stop over there and add your vote.

I DONT know. It's a tie between Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and Donkey Kong Country.
Super Metroid- The most cinematic, genius adventure known to man. You could break this game down inot every gameing aspect and even to this day in 2011 super metroid stands tall maybe even above the AAA titles we know today.
Super Mario World- If not the best, definitely one of the best in the entire franchise. Just like Super Metroid, World is an epic from start to finish. A fair difficulty, great music, pure fun just like the Metroid interation. There's nothing wrong with this game.
Donkey Kong Country- You'd never think back in 1994 that a Donkey Kong game could stand above games like sonic and Mario. But that skeptism became a reality. Rare had lifted off, and made DK one my favorite video game characters of all time. Oh and Diddy is cool too.
Sooo... Super Metroid!
NES- Mega Man 2
SNES- Super Metroid
N64- Super Mario 64
GCN- Animal Crossing
Wii- Super Mario Galaxy 2

Final Fantasy VI... story, gameplay, controls, EVERYTHING about this game is flawless. Not only the best game on SNES, but THE BEST GAME EVER IN HISTORY IN EVERY CONSOLE.

DkFluttershyGuy said:
This is strange for me to say, since I played it for the first time on PlayStation. But, since it was a port of a Super Nintendo game, I have to go with Final Fantasy V as the best Super NES game ever! A game so superb, I had to wait 7 years after it's release to play it. And it was worth the wait, even despite lag time on the PS version.
Honorable mention to FF IV & VI, Chrono Trigger, Super Castlevania IV, Contra II: The Alien Wars, Batman Returns, TLoZ: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, Mega Man X, Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, Super Mario Kart, Super Empire Strikes Back, Donkey Kong Country, Super Punch-Out, Super Mario All-Stars, and Street Fighter II Turbo. Lot of honorable mentions, but I think the SNES had the highest average quality of games of any system ever! In retrospect, my favorite time to be a video gamer.

Honestly? With the amount of fun I've had playing it (not to mention how many times i've played it altogether D: ), SMRPG is probably at the top of my list. It'd be damn hard to choose between it, SMW (for sheer Mario-platforming goodness) and Tetris Attack (homg multiplayer is the best IMO; only problem is that you need someone around who knows how to play the game)...
there's just too many great SNES games to choose from D: D: D:

Difficult question not counting the remakes on other systems. I love Donald in Maui Mallard, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!, Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World. I also played the crap out of Killer Instinct and Super Mario Kart which I think I played the most.
So which one to choose? I think I go for Super Mario Kart.
And I still have loads of SNES games that I have but still need to play (Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3, Super Punch-Out, Super Mario All-Stars, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana etc. etc.). So this could change.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Donkey Kong Country 2
Yoshi's Island
Super Mario Kart
Super Castlevania IV
Chrono Trigger
Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers

It excells in storytelling, graphics, music, characters and gameplay. It doesn't have an overly complicated battle system, yet manages to remain deep and add some innovations much needed at the time. SNES and the NES have the best libraries of all time which makes it harder to just go with game. Maybe it would be more fair to go with a "best game in each genre"? With that said and to answer the question... Final Fantasy III (VI) is the one for me.

Whats with all the mario/ donkey kong? they're good but not breaking much new ground.
For me LInk to the past was probably best then tons of other weird stuff.
Equinox, Alien 3, Tetris attack, Cybernator, all 3 star wars platformers, Starfox, f-zero, Desert Strike, Legend of Mystical Ninja, Smash TV, Flashback, super EDF, Stunt Race FX.... so many that are all 'bests' in their own right. We all know the Nintendo stuff is best, why re-hash those lists?

That's a tough choice, as the SNES had so many great games. I remember I had a blast with the Donkey Kong Country trilogy when I was a kid, and Super Mario RPG was every bit as unforgettable, if not moreso. However, my vote has to go with Final Fantasy III (VI), because its story is just so ingeniously told, and the cinematics are stunning and spectacular.

Oh boy, Yoshi's Island or Donkey Kong Country 3: Diddy's Kong Quest. There both awesome games! I can't decide! I'll get back to that, maybe

For the SNES? I would have to say the side-scrolling action RPG with the most non-traditional plot I've ever played: Demon's Crest. Multiple endings (based on what items you've found), a second quest and.... best of all.... You're a gargoyle who embarks on his quest because he wants to become the ultimate demon.

I can only say that because I loved every single moment of that game and none of it was bad for me. Most other SNES games I can say I didn't enjoy certain aspects as much as others.
But for me, DKC2 is the PERFECT SNES game

Either Kirby Super Star, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2.

@OverlordMao I only played the gameboy advance version of DKC2 but it sill was awesome.

Almost impossible to answer, however Super Metroid remains the Super Nintendo game that had the greatest impact on me, everything about it is perfect, it's music, it's atmosphere, it's controls, it's size, it's secrets...etc etc etc. It's also the greatest game ever made, on any system, in my opinion...
A link to the Past comes second, closely followed by Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Super Castlevania IV...

There are lots of Super Nintendo games that i've yet to experience. Yes, even on the Wii's VC.
I'm going with Contra III for now because this was the most intense solo and co-op game i played in that era. The new capabilities in graphics and sounds made this game really shine and a bit of an evolution over its predecessors. From the first mid-level bosses to that last epic fight this game is a pure rollercoaster ride and especially the rocket-section and the first end of level boss will forever be engrained in the minds of me and my old schoolmate (R.I.P. fella, R.I.P.).
But since it is too hard for many people the best SNES game for everyone is Super Mario World imo. So many ways to play the game, such amazing level and character designs, so many secrets to uncover ... And always a great co-op time for sure.
