Nintendo's emphasis on these ridiculous marketing toys to buttress an already tired 1 v 1 fighting genre that features a bunch of characters they can't bother to actually make real games for tells me it's still not yet time to come back to WiiU and have a look. Just me though, I guess they've always been about the under 17 market I just wish it wasn't so.

still got my old phat never upgraded, and I loved the akward 'robocop' design. Machine still runs but I had to replace the touchscreen a few times since the replacements (ebay/China) seem cheaper than the factory ones, wish I could find a good source for one that'll last longer so I could give it to some kid who wants one.

yeah, I wish it well but sadly I've kind of moved on. I was about the biggest Nintendo fan I know until the WiiU, and it was a huge change for me personally. Ever since going to a Nintendo preview event to try it out months before it was released my view of their strategy made an about face.

I was so hyped to try that thing and played all those demos in an utter state of MEH. All I could think was "wait, this is it?! it's ok but... it feels like it could be a big mistake. The pad isn't impressive or even something I wanted, the hardware is too different to expect the multiplat games, and there is just too much extra stuff to buy to make the price worth it. especially with no killer app at launch or for months after" Really one of the biggest let downs ever. Theres still 3DS which I love but... doesn't have a phone on it or texting which keeps it from taking my most used electronic spot. anyway, you've heard me whine enough here, I'll just sneak out of here.. and I still love this site. I was a different person in the days of wiiware-world.com and it's sure a different world now.

@Yorumi exactly, well said.
it's great to be creative and daring but a console is a machine for playing software in a wide range of genres and styles. If you can afford more than one, great, but continuing to assume that we'll all just buy each one for it's unique style of play is just arrogance. If you're trying to provide experiences for "the entire family", i.e. many different players than you have to take the actual sales trends seriously and learn something from them.

I love Nintendos approach that's why I was such a super-fan growing up, but it seems like they've stuck to their guns even in the face of drastically changing times and that just won't work forever.

Even their kid focused games aren't the rage with kids that mobile gaming stuff is; they ARE better to be sure, but it's not the platform with the widest reach. You have to listen to the numbers eventually or slide into irrelevance slowly. My fear is not that Nintendo will crash and burn, they're too big and too great for that, it's that they'll keep fading behind their old fashioned hardware until it's just us nerds on here playing their games.

I admire him in lots of ways. I have to almost disagree in part with this position, though. The industry is just so much bigger than it used to be. What makes Nintendo great is just what he describes but with the kind of hub machine these consoles have become there has to be room for the big titles AND the innovative exclusives so that the 'sensible' business parts pay for the creative, innovative risk taking. If people aren't buying the machines then you won't have the bread to do anything fun at all. but I digress, they've held it together the last couple years ok despite worrying signs, so if they can pull it off, great.

right. 'cause Nintendo and 3rd party support for it's toybox of peripheral gags have such a stellar history. To be fair, Nintendo does them well but 3rd parties? I'll believe it when nintendo starts really advertising even their own products.
Like all it's other machines, what incentive does anyone else have to implement something that takes the extra infrastructure of creating and selling toys when Nintendo has always had abysmal support for 3rd parties trying to implement it's quirky input devices? If it works for them, cool, but they've never been good at pushing 3rd party offerings at all. There are plenty of people who barely know that a Nintendo machine can even run anything but a mario or zelda game.

I like that the 3d is easier to work with and it's faster but all that trouble and no speaker and camera upgrade? I love my xl so it's got to have better cameras or no sale for my usage. Looks great though, very tempting. (If I also hadn't just spent a fortune on a dang phone this would be an easier buy, and it's harder to skimp on your phone since... it's your phone - games or not).
I love the more odd novelty tech like AR and the 3D cameras so I'm likely an anomaly consumer, they made nice design choices here.

Ren commented on Wii U Version of Watch Dogs to Miss Out on DLC:

@ToxieDogg
yes I am saying that.. or at least I'm saying that they WERE trying. the 3 systems are so different that it takes considerably different resources to develop the SAME game for WiiU and as a company they have to weigh their options. Ubisoft actually bothered to do that at all. If you've played the other versions you'd see that it's not something they could simply hit a button to make it work on WiiU. Even now I imagine they're kicking themselves for ever committing to releasing it on WiiU. It's just not a system that is conducive to porting the other current big games to and we can only 'blame' Nintendo for that; I don't think that's a bad thing per se, it's just a Nintendo machine for Nintendo games. These massive budget games lately are a huge gamble, though, but Nintendo doesn't care, they went ahead and released a system that basically any 3rd party would have to exclusively design for from the ground up including weird tablet functionality. My guess is that some of these 3rd parties are developing for consoles specifically because they don't want to deal with cheesy touch screen tablets and now they have to incorporate it into 'innovative' new games with an inferior spec just for the priveledge of appearing on a Nintendo machine.
Anyway I get the idea about xbox, you're right, I just think developing a AAA game for both PS4/Xbone is a much safer/cheaper bet overall than both of those + WiiU. Part of having a WiiU is just accepting this. I'm finally about ready to get a WiiU just seeing how stubborn Nintendo has been... that tells me that at least the Nintendo games are likely top notch even if none of the others are (and probably also full retail price until about 2030).

Ren commented on Wii U Version of Watch Dogs to Miss Out on DLC:

but really people, you have to consider that Ubisoft dumped more (as a 3rd party) support on WiiU than any other company and themselves are probably barely seeing profit back in that area. Since they already committed to it early on I would be glad they haven't outright dropped WD all together, it would make total sense. No matter how well any other WiiU games are selling theres no way to argue that the WiiU isn't being outsold by the other 2 by big leaps. Nintendo went on a creative design limb with the WiiU making it a lot harder to port the other 'next gen' games.
heres their situation: you have 3 platforms, 2 with nearly identical specs, comparable to a PC and one much lower with a tablet controller and which is demonstrably being outsold by a massive margin.
Well they stood by Nintendo anyway at and after launch but it still doesn't look good. why should they stick around? so Smash Brothers and Mario games of all stripes are selling like hotcakes to it's limited install base... so what? that means nothing at all for sales of 3rd party games, and today it no longer is just about them "not trying hard enough" that's BS.
Watchdogs wasn't my favorite game but it is really good, and not having the DLC is not a crippling blow; being on a Nintendo machine might be though.

cool article and I won't argue that he's an accomplished designer but I'm not a big fan of his games, personally. I really don't get the Smash Bros thing, and the Kid Icarus thing was so corny I couldn't even stand it for more than a couple plays. Maybe I'm getting old but I just hold a much higher standard for game stories and ideas now. Nintendo, while great at what it does design-wise, is really stuck in the past.

And it's still 1080?! No friggin way". I would think they could run a company just creatively compressing assets in some way for other developers, really astounding stuff, keep it up.

Ren commented on Watch Dogs Wii U Release Dates Confirmed:

I was so excited for Watchdogs, being in Chicago myself, but it was a pretty big letdown. To compare it to GTA is... like comparing a flip phone to a modern smartphone:
the basic purpose is the same, it kind of goes online, it's sleek in an early 2000's kind of way, but ultimately it's an insult to call it an alternative to the real thing, GTA 5 "last gen" is just another level entirely I didn't even like those games before playing it.
You could maybe call W.D. a commendable attempt at a GTA4 clone; without driving controls. And Chicago? Chicago, Germany maybe if that was a place.

Ren commented on Watch Dogs Wii U Release Dates Confirmed:

While I'm FI-nally warming up to the idea of a WiiU on my shelf soon for the different range of games it offers, games like Watchdogs wouldn't do it. I wasn't that impressed by the ps4 one so I can't see how this one would meet or exceed expectations. It looks like the WiiU is going to be a heavy 1st party system which is both good and bad. @Dreamcaster-X said it best above really, exactly my thoughts on it. (After that I can't imagine Ubisoft will ever learn to find good writers and actors when GTA games still feel more truly mature than any of their serious 'historical' drama games; corniest stories/acting ever.)

True,
Young kids won't bash a game if it's squares and bleeps, they'll just try to figure it out and have fun. Teens are always cynical and competitive it's very annoying to watch, that's part of what makes these videos fascinating in a "can't NOT look at the accident scene" kinda way.

cute idea for a video but nothing really shocking. they're young and they haven't played it before, nothing bad on them. None of them are big idiots or anything.

Then they chide them on for acting dumb about loading it for the first time with no instruction. I would do the same if I'd been shown it the first time. I spent 10m last night trying to figure out how to eject a disc from a PS4; a console is a custom computer with redesigned hardware interface like every 3 years, they're never that intuitive.
The benefit for us who grew up with it (and Atari before that) is that we knew all along that it could only get better from there we just had no idea how MUCH better. Now every time I play a 360 or PS4 or something I feel like I'm a rich person living on Mars, it's still hardly believable when I spent some days playing Combat or Frostbite, or Centipede for Hours at a time on our Atari 2600.
I don't even want to speculate about the hours I spent on R.C.Pro-Am on NES, god it's like looking back at your days as an alcoholic... Put that in front of them and then try to get it away from them 6 hours later.

Ren commented on Feature: The Nintendo 64 Controller and the Ri...:

the N64 controller was one more way Nintendo grabbed me as a young obsessed fan (like some kids on here now). It's clear that this design was a huge risk and it payed off handsomely for us and eventually them because it worked, the same was true for the Wii. They've always taken the huge risks, which they paid for with the virtual boy (not very 3d and sickmaking) and the WiiU (not really a new idea and horribly mismanaged HD development).
the biggest and greatest gambles at Nintendo were made by the genius of Miyamoto who still has a fair amount of sway over there. His design is still what drives their success I just wish the joker at the top could be replaced/fired by... anyone. I can't imagine what will happen to the company when Miyamoto isn't there anymore for any reason ~shudder~, things look bad enough without him at the top.

weird responses. I get the sense that people that don't like it didn't really play with it at the time it released. Of course it looks ridiculous by todays standards but it really did set the stage for all the ones we use today.

At the time it launched I was blown away, it felt so comfortable and amazing despite the bizarre look. I grew up with Atari and to have that little tight joystick on there for 3D movement AND access to all the other buttons truly felt amazing. I remember thinking that there was no way any company would go back to control without it and that's still true.
Like someone said it's the same layout as the wii-mote with nunchuck EXACTLY, and it feels fantastic theres just no need for the separation without motion control. plus the yellow buttons ad lots of options (even as a de-facto D-pad); how is this "less" buttons? it's still plenty by modern standards.

So they've gone as far as to actually improve the CPU but it's still got the same S**T .3 mp camera and the same S**T amplifier/soundchip? Really?
I appreciate the improvements I guess (viewing angle is nicer?) but I have never once thought to myself "gosh, I sure wish it had more buttons and could recognize all the crappy marketing toys nintendo will be selling". With the slow moving WiiU theres no reason to wait anymore in releasing some of the true classics from those. Regular people have decided they don't want a WiiU, so why not go ahead and also alienate all the actual die hard fans by holding back what made us just that?

Ren commented on Poll: Which Is The Best Super Mario Platformer?:

My guess is this would vary wildly with the age of the voters. There was a long time where SMB3 would always win hands down, but then SMB64 came out and destroyed everything.
Now that we've picked up our lives again and moved on it's hard to chose which because they occupy such a different space in what they've meant for gaming.
I'd argue though that SMB3 was the kind of crowning pinnacle of the old 2D platformer and still added new elements to the genre, it's like everything 2d after that could almost be 'retro' and borrowing from anything leading up to SMB3.
Then we finally got SMB64 and it sparked the beginning of true 3D platforming AND doing it so well that its stood up as great gaming for so many years beyond. (galaxy games are really great but just still just a big extension of the 64 formula)

Wow, can't believe what branding sheep people seem to become as "gamers". It's like everyone who starts to play games more than a few hours a week somehow becomes a weird extreme loyalist willing to dive in front of a train in defense of brash, corny, opportunistic marketing ploys of whatever massive corporate entity happens to publish a game they play.

No one said it would 'break' the game or that it's hurt them physically, the point is just that it's a tasteless move for a company like this with an already solid defined property like MK, that sullies the brand and style that we're accustomed to after 20 years of success without that kind of cheap product placement.
Is it that hard to actually think outside the gaming world about the real one and the way big companies find nothing sacred anymore in the name of cheap advertising opportunities.
Is that kind of advertising grab really the right thing to shore up profits after a disappointing launch and a still underwhelming library of games based on ancient recycled Nintendo assets? No, it's not.
Totally harmless tweet, especially considering Nintendo probably isn't in love with that DLC themselves and might only utter "here here" upon seeing it.

but these discussions always ignore what tablets and phones actually do overall; why people actually get them. If an adult can get one for 4-500$, use e-mail, word processing now, media stuff, surf web, camera apps, calendar stuff, apps useful for most all careers/hobbies, etc., etc. AND games good enough to entertain your young kid for 10-40 min periods how could it possibly be a bad purchase?

What bothers me about this is only that it's been a problem with Nintendo's games for a long time. They use this weird excuse of "doing something different for a different audience" to just NOT do things that many games are doing currently. Why are people ignoring that the biggest trend right now with other consoles is to try and allow online coop games with the story campaign to further the online functionality of games in general?
Nintendo choose to ignore everything online with the old Wii and it killed the system. That's not "doing things differently" it's just stupid. You can't just completely ignore the market trends of what is happening in YOUR industry.
Anyway, it's not a huge deal but whatever online is there better be pretty spectacular. It's so typical of Nintendo to do something like that and then be defensive like it was some "strategy" (like a strategy to actually get HD games made in under 4 years). And yes I get that this is a Namco game but it's Nintendo that largely makes big choices like this for a game published by them.

it's not a bad idea or a good one either it's just too little too late. Nintendo has always had a lack of good marketing strategy; doing things that aren't bad, per se, but just bizarre and defy any kind of conventional marketing logic.
Often it doesn't matter because the hardware is robust and the software is designed so well that it sells itself. but when it's not up to that usual high standard things bomb pretty hard.
The other consoles often release pretty half baked or cliche stuff but actually have real marketing strategy and dollars at work so they still make the impact they need to.. I wish Nintendo could learn something from them (like get rid of Iwata).
