@Cyber-BLP--
SMG 1 to 2 is the SMB 3 to World argument. SMB 3 perfected the 2D platformer, World took that perfection and added some cool new mechanics and powerups and that's why I preferred it, but many of my friends will swear by SMB 3.

Galaxy 1, imo, perfected the 3D platformer but 2 has that same gameplay along with the addition of Yoshi which made it more enjoyable for me. I also preferred some of the boss battles. Picking and choosing a favorite between these games though is just arguing semantics. In the end I'd recommend them all to anybody who calls himself/herself a gamer.

@MarioPhD
I wasn't a big fan of the FLUDD myself, thought it seemed out of place, but I could've looked past it had I enjoyed the levels more. Also, Yoshi was pretty useless, I didn't like that either.

@Cyber-BLP--
I can maybe see the 'had to be there' argument in regards to SM 64, Sunshine had different problems. Collectathons I can tolerate but the FLUDD, the meh boss fights, Yoshi being utterly useless. All those added up for me. To be fair, I can see why a lot of people love Sunshine, I think part of the problem was also I was simply at a point in my life where I realized after 14 years of playing Nintendo games I was looking for something different. So it wasn't all necessarily problems with games as it was with my likes and dislikes changing. I did try to give to Sunshine another go not too long after I got the Wii, the problem was by then I had played through Super Mario Galaxy and there was no going back after that. That's arguably the best 3D Mario (I'd vote SMG 2 but many prefer the original).

This game is awesome, probably my favorite Wii game. I honestly didn't think they'd be able to top SMG 1 but just like he added to Super Mario World, putting Yoshi in the game put this one above the original, imo. In fact, I'd put SMG 2 at the top of the list of 3D Mario games. I also hold out hope for a third entry. Super Mario 3D World is excellent but it felt more like an evolution of 3D Land and wasn't really the direction I wanted to see the console Mario games take after the Galaxy series.

Gamer83 commented on Mario History: Super Mario World - 1991:

This, A Link to the Past and Street Fighter II are my top 3 of all-time. I don't know if I'd say Super Mario World ranks ahead of A Link to the Past but I have put more hours into SMW than any other game I've ever played. Loved it in 1991 and it hasn't lost its charm all these years later.

@BoshiBoy
I'd love to see Nintendo do something with this game similar to the Genesis 3D Classics but I don't think I'd want them to change the style. It may not look as clean but I still prefer this style to NSMB.

@Hero-of-WiiU
It never had a start in the West to begin with... I bought one, and I don't regret it because I've played some great games on it, however, it's been totally irrelevant in the Western market since day one. Some would say since before day one.

3DS on the other hand, I'd say I agree with Yamashita. It's got at least two years left in it, and could probably go for up to 5 more years if Nintendo wants to stick with it that long.

@gamermole
Ok, I see what you're saying and don't totally disagree. Paying respects is better than not doing so but I'm sure some aren't as sincere as others. For example, I don't really know what to make of tweets from Neil Druckmann or Phil Spencer but somebody like Ken Lobb who worked for Nintendo and met Mr. Iwata, I'm sure his is heart felt, even if he is at MS now.

Gamer83 commented on Tributes and an Outpouring of Respect Are Shar...:

I just think it's a shame we wait until somebody is gone until telling them they're doing a good job. Especially if by all accounts they were a good person like Iwata seemed. He made some mistakes, sure, and I felt Nintendo could've benefited from promoting somebody younger to help him run the company. That way you could've had somebody a little more in tune with today's market (doesn't matter if you like the direction it's heading or not, it is what it is and Nintendo hasn't done the best job adapting) who could've learned from one of the best in Iwata and you'd have a ready-made successor whenever the time came. But for some of the recent missteps, two of the biggest money-makers ever for Nintendo were the DS and Wii and people were too busy b*tching about how they were 'casual' rather than digging deeper, finding the good games (of which there were many) and being thankful to Iwata for saving the company's a$$ because Nintendo was in a tough position after Gamecube. Maybe no financially but they were going to border on irrelevance had the Wii not been the hit that it was.

And his work leading the company isn't even counting the games he helped make. This guy did far more good for gaming than bad and the industry is worse off without him. Society in general is. There's very few company 'leaders,' none I know of at Sony or MS, who take a hit in their own salary so their workers could keep their jobs and continue supporting themselves and their families.

Very sad to read this. A big loss for gaming and society in general. He seemed like one of the few leaders who actually was a leader. His actions proved he cared about the people who worked for him. I hope for the best for his family in this very difficult time.

The Wii, though many like to slag it off, is one of my all-time favorite consoles and is no. 4 on my list of Nintendo systems right behind SNES, NES and GBA. He was responsible for that system and for that I thank him very much.

Gamer83 commented on Rumour: Nintendo Isn't Bringing Devil's Third ...:

NoA has become freaking pathetic in recent years. I never look for anybody to lose their job, so Reggie can stay on in some capacity for the company but leadership needs to be taken away. People here had to beg for Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and Pandora's Tower as well, when the Wii had literally NOTHING else left to offer either. One thing I'll give both Sony and MS, even if I don't necessarily agree with how much support the PS3 and 360 have gotten since the new consoles have been out at least they didn't totally abandon those userbases. Dumba$$ Nintendo of America quit on the Wii a year before the Wii U was on the market and seems to be quitting on Wii U before anything is even officially announced. This better be a rumor that turns out to be totally false, started by some clown who's just looking for clickbait on social media.

Gamer83 commented on Sony's Shuhei Yoshida Plays It Cool With The S...:

@yuwarite
It was hypocritical of Sony, I'll give you that, because there's no doubt in my mind if people hadn't called MS on its bs policies, Sony would've gone down the same path. All the companies sh*t talk to some degree though. If we want to talk about arrogance and not being humble a look into Nintendo's past shows it most certain isn't the humble, loving, perfect company people here want to believe. Nintendo and the execs there are right in the same class of scum as Sony and MS and Reggie is certainly at the top of the list.

@MrGuinea
And then you have a monopoly. Nobody wants that. I've been a long time fan of the PlayStation home consoles and Nintendo handheld systems but both companies are guilty of overvaluing their products at times. I don't even want to think what outrageous pricing plans they'd have come up with if this partnership had happened and was successful.

@dizzy_boy
I agree Sega would still be out of the hardware race. Too many screw ups and too much dysfunction within the company. But I'm not sure we'd have the Xbox if things didn't play out as they did. I've read articles, and I'll try to find links later, that state MS got into the console business having seen Sony's success and were looking to take the PS brand out. I actually think it's great how everything went down. Nintendo would be much different right now, PlayStation would be and there's a good chance there'd be no Xbox. In fact, if the Nintendo/Sony partnership happened and was strong, you'd be looking at a monopoly and a look into the past of Sony and Nintendo and its dealings with other companies, that wouldn't be a good thing for anybody. I wouldn't even want to imagine pricing plans on consoles.

This was hardly Nintendo's biggest mistake ever. I still say it was as simple as not using CDs for N64. Use CDs, SquareSoft releases FF VII on N64 and PlayStation never takes off, or at least not like it did. I don't think I'd still be gaming though, so I'm glad things played out how they did.

Great interview. Though I wasn't a huge fan of the Epic Mickey games I'll always be thankful to Warren Spector for the Deus Ex series. The first is fantastic and though he wasn't directly involved with Deus Ex: Human Revolution (my favorite action/RPG of the last gen) his original work is part of why it exists. Can't wait to see how Mankind Divided turns out.

Gamer83 commented on Nintendo Reportedly Pitched NX To Third Partie...:

Good third party support is huge for me so I'm interested to see how this turns out. We were also told how wonderful third parties thought Wii U was and then they couldn't drop the system fast enough. I'm cautiously but I need to see results first. Third party support on Nintendo consoles has been terrible since the SNES era ended. If they are actively engaging them this time around, that's a good thing. Hopefully it brings better results than more recent ones.

@mjc0961
He was also responsible for some boneheaded decisions with other consoles as well. In particular going with cartridges for N64 over cds, which while there were some advantages there were also some obvious disadvantages.

You have got to be kidding me. We could've had a new F-Zero from the guys behind some of the best racing games ever and didn't get it because why? But they can waste time on stuff nobody asked for like Mario Tennis? Still haven't gotten that long overdue Wave Race either. It's just annoying reading stuff like this though. It would've been awesome with Criterion in charge. Wish Nintendo had kept this news to itself.

Gamer83 commented on Nintendo Is A Slave To Its Past Success, Says...:

I think the biggest thing that needs to change, whether Nintendo fans want to hear it or not, is Nintendo needs to deliver a console with NX that is significantly more powerful than what's out there and it has to bend over backwards to get real third party support. It needs to get the best versions of GTA, Call of Duty, Mortal Kombat, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Dishonored, Hitman, Deus Ex, etc. The majority of Nintendo fans may not care for these games but they are popular and many others do enjoy them. If Nintendo had all the best versions of third party games, along with its own older franchises and some new IPs like Splatoon, the only way Nintendo be stopped from massive success would be if it stopped itself.

Gamer83 commented on Next Metroid Prime Home Console Title "Would L...:

@Shy_Guy
Some may disagree but after Other M, I think the series needed a nice, long break, even if it meant missing an entire console generation. Unlike certain companies who push stuff out yearly and can't tell when a series needs a break and a re-thinking, Nintendo tends to get this. Metroid has its hardcore fanbase but it certainly isn't Nintendo's end-all, be-all either, so it missing in action isn't devastating. This long time off has allowed Other M to become a distant memory and if Nintendo can get this game on the NX either day-one or sometime in the first 6 months of that console, it allows more hype to build for its return. Especially if it's Retro making it.

Bad news is it's one less game that could be added to the Wii U's library. Good news is though it basically confirms MP 4 and maybe it could even be a day one NX game. That'd be enough to get my launch-day purchase.

@FragRed

I'm not rooting for this, but the easiest way for Nintendo get third parties on board with NX, at least early on, would be to go all digital. As somebody who prefers physical copies of games I hate that this is where the industry is headed but reality has to be faced at some point and this is the sad reality. Companies want total control of these games and all digital does that.

@sub12

Sadly that's been the case for me too since the SNES days. N64 had more what I'd consider classics than the PS1 did, but it seemed like during the 6-month, to 1-year waits that I had between those games, my PS1-owning friends were getting a bunch of good games month after month. At certain point I'll take a bunch of good games over 1 or 2 great ones a year. And that was the gen that started the problems. I'll get raked over the coals for saying this, but I don't care, the Gamecube for me was a complete wasteland. Wii was a bit better, Wii U another improvement but it's still not close to the SNES days. The handheld systems though. The Gameboy line was awesome, especially GBA, one of my favorite systems of all-time. DS was great and 3DS has topped it. If there's one thing Nintendo has never missed on, it's the portable gaming market.

I'd say your guess is the most accurate. Phil Spencer is a businessman after all and a good businessman knows a good opportunity when he sees one. I don't hold anything against him for that but I'm not going to kiss his a$$ and say this is just him wanting to make gaming better as a whole either because that most definitely is not the case.

About time. Nintendo has blown such an opportunity with the virtual console though. It took some time to build up but during the middle years of the Wii the VC was actually great. Gamer83 commented on The Legend of Zelda for Wii U No Longer Set fo...:

@rjejr
As a Halo fan, I actually wouldn't mind if of those 3 Halo was the one to get pushed back. I'd still have Tomb Raider, I'd still have Forza and then MS does have other games it can plug in to fill the space left by Halo. 5 is the most important launch in the Halo series since 2, imo. Mainly because of how badly 343 screwed up with the Master Chief Collection. Still, though, even if you take that game out, or Forza or Tomb Raider, the lineup is better than PS4's or Wii U's. Factor in another likely price drop and sales will be big this holiday for the X1.

@sinalefa
The PS4 is selling well but if Sony could actually get quality games out in a timely manner it'd be doing even better. I can't believe that for the second Christmas season in a row (I'm going to give them a pass for 2013 since it was the year of the PS4's launch) Sony is not going to have a major game like Uncharted or God of War available. Just dumb, especially since the Uncharted 4 delay was avoidable if Naughty Dog hadn't messed around with remasters and forced out the original Uncharted team. We've got Bloodborne now which is great, but it is a niche game and after a month or so hype will die down, maybe even sooner. Sony's going to need a sizeable price drop to compete with MS during the latter part of this year. With Nintendo, if it gets Star Fox out and it's awesome, that at least gives Wii U one major release but it would've been great if Zelda U could've made it as well.

Gamer83 commented on The Legend of Zelda for Wii U No Longer Set fo...:

It hasn't officially been said that the game won't come out in 2015 so I'm going to hold out hope that it still makes this year. If not that's two of top 5 anticipated games delayed into 2016. Why don't Sony and MS just hand North America back to MS on a silver platter? Neither company has a damn thing for the holidays. MS meanwhile has Tomb Raider, Halo and Forza still with a possibility of Quantum Break or Scalebound to join them.

I don't know if it's that alarming. I was surprised at first too but several friends have told me there's actually a decent fanbase for Battlefield in Japan considering it's an FPS and when you look at DQ's overall sales they're not terrible, especially since as you mentioned it's just a spinoff. The next main DQ will probably be a big-time seller.

@Ichiban
Yeah, Japan's had a really nice stretch here for PS4. Even in the U.S. the last few weeks have been probably the best stretch the console has had with DmC Definitive, RE Revelations 2, FF Type-O, Borderlands, the killer exclusive that is Bloodborne and next week, Toukiden: Kiwami. I wish there was more in the way of new stuff but Revelations 2 and Bloodborne are great and should get me through to Mortal Kombat X and The Witcher 3.

All due respect to your opinion, I couldn't possibly disagree with you more about Super Mario 3D World. It sucks? I'd admit I liked the Galaxy games better but of the three current gen consoles, at least imo, Super Mario 3D World is the best game. It's an absolute joy to play. And somebody like you, Nintendo's games have been a bit hit and miss for me and I don't feel the same about the company as I did back in the NES, SNES and N64 days when it seemed like everything it released hit all the right notes. But 3D World is fantastic and I'm sure the next Legend of Zelda will be excellent as well.
