Video game music is a topic we're passionate about here at Nintendo Life, and we're certainly not alone. We ran an entire season of interviews and features on the topic last year, and it's one of the subjects always sure to fire up enthusiasm at the office.
It's not surprising really. Great music wherever you find it has a way of transporting you and firing up long-dormant memories. And with many video games you spend many hours absorbing the audio — no wonder the best melodies get lodged in the mind!
The Nintendo Switch has a wide and varied catalogue of games with an equally expansive selection of great music. In this feature — and the lovely Felix's accompanying video above — we've selected just 10 Switch games that we think have particularly spectacular soundtracks. That's 10 of the best, not the 10 best soundtracks on Switch!
Obviously, with so much aural love on this hybrid console, we could have gone on forever. If you enjoy this list and Felix's video, be sure to let us know — we'd love nothing more than to turn this into 'Part 1' of an ongoing series!
So, come with us now as we get lost in music, caught in a trap, no turning back, etc. Sit back and enjoy — in no particular order — some absolute bangers...
Cuphead (Switch eShop)

Cuphead is a game where the aesthetic truly shines, with its take on classic cartoons transitioning beautifully to the visuals and the gameplay. The soundtrack is a huge part of the experience as well, with live performances and jazzy beats beautifully capturing the action. The compositions have an authentic feel and some of the tracks may loop around in your head long after you've taken down this game's varied foes.

Undertale (Switch eShop)
In terms of Indie games that have truly impacted and shaped the gaming scene, Undertale is right up there. It's visually intriguing, and its approach to the RPG genre and storytelling has captured many imaginations. Like much of the game the soundtrack was created by Toby Fox, and has become so beloved and respected that they've since produced work for mainline Pokémon titles, for example.
If you haven't played Undertale, we'd bet money you've nevertheless heard its music anyway.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)

The inclusion of the soundtrack from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would have perhaps seemed unlikely when the game launched. For all of the acclaim directed at the game, not all appreciated the understated piano-led music and environmental composition. As a series renowned for iconic melodies and high intensity arrangements, the approach here was entirely different.
As the years have passed, though, appreciation has grown for the technical approach to the music in the game, and its beauty. If you want to hear a soundtrack that perfectly fits a game, this is a good place to start.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition (Switch)

The trilogy of Witcher games is an incredible achievement, but for many the big focus and source of inspiration is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. An enormous RPG with a sense of scale that seems downright crazy to play on a little Switch, it's a big-budget effort that delivers on a true 'triple-A' scope.
The soundtrack also benefited from the attention to detail and focus on performance. It features terrific compositions performed by a live orchestra, and it's a vital part of the adventure.
Hollow Knight (Switch eShop)

Hollow Knight is one of the most iconic Indie games of the last five years, a carefully crafted Metroidvania with a memorable aesthetic and world design. Many have fallen in love with the various areas of the world, while strong enemy design is also key to its immersive nature.
The music is also a standout, with the quality exceptionally high not just in term of the melodies but also the production. Incredible considering the Indie status of the game, it's a beautiful soundtrack that isn't easily forgotten.
Splatoon 2 (Switch)

Splatoon is not just one of Nintendo's biggest successes as a new IP in the last decade, but is also entirely distinctive in the industry. A shooter where there's greater reward for controlling territory than splatting foes, its sequel Splatoon 2 continued the legacy on Switch with a fun campaign and excellent online play.
One of Nintendo's biggest triumphs with the series, though, is the music. A quirky sound fully aligned with the games' lore, it's hugely popular - especially in Japan. Live concerts and album pressings are common for this series.
A Short Hike (Switch eShop)

A Short Hike is more than just a pretty experience, it's the sort of game that sticks long in the memory. Though theoretically short in length, it's a title full of diversions and opportunities to explore, with writing and world-building that'll encourage you to swoop through the whole world.
Its dream-like visuals are accompanied brilliantly by its soundtrack, which is full of pleasing and Summery tones. A lovely main theme has plenty of variations, while guitar and piano-led tunes perfectly setup key aspects of gameplay.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch)
Animal Crossing: New Horizons became the game of 2020, capturing the zeitgeist in a year of unique challenges. Its blend of island life, socialising and undeniable charm won over millions of Switch owners, and plenty of us are still playing to this day.
Its music continues to delight, too. From the main themes, through to seasonal occasions and a full suite of unique tracks from K.K. Slider, it's absolutely packed with wonderful tracks.
Celeste (Switch eShop)

Celeste has been one of the most influential Indie games of recent years. Its visuals are immediately arresting, while it offers a fiendish level of challenge for those seeking the credits and also all those extras. It's also earned many fans for its earnest and emotive storytelling, with plenty of depth to the tale as you seek the top of the mountain.
Lena Raine's soundtrack is key to the story beats, of course, with its tones perfectly matching the setting and visuals. This is a game truly best enjoyed with a pair of headphones.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch)
Sadly no longer on the market, this collection brings together three fantastic games — Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. All offer very different takes on the classic 3D Mario formula, with soundtracks that also act as reflections of their respective eras.
Super Mario 64 has plenty of tracks that may have similar vibes to the 2D platformers that came before, but with a new sense of depth to the sound courtesy of the Nintendo 64's capabilities. Super Mario Sunshine went all in with its tropical island setting, while also upping the stakes for boss encounters. Super Mario Galaxy, memorably, saw Nintendo take the step into fully orchestrated music, with the production and compositions setting a new standard.
So there you are! Let us know below which of these game soundtracks you enjoy the most and which games you'd like to see featured in a potential 'Part Deux'...

No xenoblade 2? =S
Mummy Demastered
River City Girls
And if the Mario 3D all stars qualify, the so should:
Mega Man Collection
Castlevania Collection
The Final Fantasy games on Switch.
Excuse me, no Xenoblade 1 or 2? You can't be serious. I guess there is still part 2
My Top 3 :
3. Rainbow Road Mario Kart 8
https://youtu.be/WriO4Erm66Y
2. Welcome Horizons from ACNH
https://youtu.be/uZbkcInnl50
1. So Smooth from Moving Out (I ❤ 80's style songs)
https://youtu.be/pf0UK7kvVfs
Tetris Effect needs to be on part 2 of this list.
In my opinion this is a fine choice for a Top 10 but there could be mentioning of the strongest contenders. Not only Xenoblade comes to mind but I expected also Octopath Traveler to be on this list.
You've done Bowser Kingdom real dirty.
Actually, for a potential part 2, next to xenoblade i would also add:
Donkey kong country tropical freeze (since all star works)
fire emblem three houses
ori and the blind forest/will of wisps
Zelda, Skyward Sword
Octopath Traveller
Obviously Smash bros ultimate for the sheer collection
Doom
and maybe Monster hunter rise as personal preference
A nice list! I'll definitely check out the music I haven't heard before.
BotW is good background music as it's not intrusive and a lot of the overworld music (is that what you can call it?) from the Witcher III is absolutely gorgeous.
I listen to the Celeste soundtrack regularly as well as other music from the game's composer, Lena Raine. This site introduced me to her music, so I thank you lovely people for that. <3
It's a good list. I definitely would add Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to that.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps deserves to be here.
I know it's going to be spammed here as it was on youtube, but I really need someone at a major video game news site to give the Xenoblade games the credit their due. 2 might have its flaws, but the one place it's neck and neck with the original is at the top of my list for greatest soundtracks of all time. Also, Breath of the Wild's soundtrack is worse than any other Zelda game I've played, which isn't that much of an insult because the rest are pretty hard to beat. I'm heavily biased towards Skyward Sword since it's one of my favorite games, but even OoT beats BotW by a mile. I'm also severely insulted by another person gushing over Galaxy while Sunshine gets another "eh, it's good I guess".
What an unbeliavably garbage list, something like BOTW barely even has music, it's just random piano strings like 90% of the time, similar story with hollow knight.
Undertale is the only one here (of which I have played) which has what I would call an actual video game soundtrack, Mario 3D Collection is kind of a weird pick here since it's an collection of games which are stictly not from the Switch but I suppose the Galaxy soundtrack is quite great, 64 and Sunshine especially though not so much.
Loop hero's music is completely unbelievable. I expect it to feature in part II
I have always loved Hollow Knight (I even helped Kickstart it) but only this week have I started to more significantly appreciate how terrific the soundtrack is. I've listened to it dozens of times on repeat and it's just fantastic.
The absence of SMT V, Catherine full body, and xenoblade fills me with deep disappointment..
The fact that there's not a single Pokemon game here is sacrilege. Every single Switch era one has bangers.
Also, I feel like a lot of these are here by technicality of being on Switch, like Undertale and 3D All Stars: both games that are far more known on other consoles that just happen to be on Switch (or multiple other consoles in All Stars' case).
For me, it's Xenoblade 2, Links Awakening, and Mario Odyssey
BLAZBLUE CENTRALFICTION Special Edition
UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH Exe:Late[cl-r]
Guilty Gear XX ΛCore Plus R
Crypt of the NecroDancer
Super Mario Odyssey
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game — Complete Edition
BLAZBLUE CROSS TAG BATTLE
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
I can continue, but I will stop there. Where are these games in this list, huh?!
I probably would replace Celeste with Cave story. That game has amazing music and deserve to be on the list.
Also would add Super Smash Ultimate, the Xenoblade games, Famicom tantei, the Phoenix Wright collection
Origami King? Astral Chain?
Mario and Rabbids has incredible music as well.
Also, Ubisoft, had you ported Splinter Cell series to Switch by now, Chaos Theory would be my number one pick.
But hey. There's many greats, from World of Goo to Cavestory, Shovel Knight to LoZ Skyward Sword,... No list can ever be complete, or completely 'right'.
That doesn't change that I want Splinter Cell collection on Switch.
Hmm liked the Volta-X & Penguin Wars soundtracks myself.
Tetris Effect is in part 2 though, right?
Really enjoyed the Dead Cells soundtrack.
Yep, the Breath of the Wild soundtrack definitely does fit the game
Minecraft, Mario + Rabbids, and, of Course, Smash Bros.
Since this is not 1st party related, you can just add all the Final Fantasy games to the top of the list.
Sonic Mania, Mario Odyssey, Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, all the Final Fantasy games and Smash Ultimate would all be great games for this list
Some more games I'd throw in the running include I am Setsuna, Shantae series, Wulver Blade, Monster Hunter series, Skyrim, Octopath Traveler, Shovel Knight, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX, Pokemon Sword/Shield, Kamiko, ABZU, Sky, Just Shapes & Beats, Mario Kart 8, GRIS, Flood of Light, Iconoclasts, Dark Souls, Doom, Minecraft, Flat Heroes, Metroid Dread, and finally Smash Ultimate, even if it's absolutely cheating.
Xenoblade 1. That is clear for me. Some excellent tunes there though. Oh and Smash Ultimate and SMTV
I don't really consider Nintendo games to have a soundtrack because those are not easily available everywhere (especially streaming) unless you buy $200 special editions - those too come on CDs, which I particularly dislike as a medium. BotW has beautiful, understated music though. In terms of soundtracks, I'd say Final Fantasy IX is one of my favourites, and there are some pretty good tunes in Celeste, A Short Hike, Hades.
Hotline Miami! Not just the best on switch but the best on everything when it comes to the music.
@Solaine honestly, if you're mentioning Tropical Freeze, I feel like you need to mention Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair as well. Very underrated soundtrack
I loved this! Great article, hope we'll get a part 2!
Splatoon 2, Skyward Sword HD, Astral Chain, Three Houses, Skyrim, Hollow Knight, Tetris Effect, Transistor, Final Fantasy VII/IX remasters are my picks.
I considered Super smash Bros ultimate but that seemed like cheating considering it has every other games music.
Persona strikers, Mario odyssey and Country freeze are my other runners up
My personal favorites are Undertale/Deltarune, Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Sonic Mania
Technically all of these are cheating, but they’re on Switch, and that’s what counts.
Some indies that really deserve a mention in part 2:
The Artful Escape
No Straight Roads
Mutazione
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair
Sayonara Wild Hearts
Omori
Please do a part 2! So many more games need recognition and exposure!
Olli Olli World, I leave it on the menu screen and sleep to it. It’s excellent
All three Xenoblade games on the system stand out to me.
As does Octopath Traveler.
As does SMT V.
As does DKC: Tropical Freeze.
As does Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
tbh, the only inclusion on this list I'd even immediately agree with is the Mario 3D collection, mostly on the strength of Mario Galaxy's brilliant compositions.
But... Hollow Knight's music is 93% morose ambient strings or sad piano plinking, most of whicj TVTropes claims is music from other games, just played very sadly.
Where is Bloodstained on your list for actual Metroidvania goodness?
If Super Mario 3D Collection qualifies, where is Tokyo Mirage Sessions with its zany arrangements of Fire Emblem tunes and tons of original songs?
Where the heck is SMT V?
Undertale is amazing, but it's OLD and on literally every platform under the sun! Why won't you focus on Switch exclusives?
@San_D A soundtrack is any musical accompaniment to a show/game, even if it doesn't get its own separate release. On that note though, I would highly recommend grabbing the Xenoblade 1/2 soundtracks, which did get official releases. 2/Torna are available digitally, and 1 had a CD set which I think was a pretty decent price even with having to import it, though I don't know if you can still find it. Skyward Sword's soundtrack is also worth importing, though I'll admit dealing with CDs can be a bit of a pain with how rare built-in disc drives have become.
POV: You're rapidly scrolling through the list saying "Sayonara Wild Hearts Sayonara Wild Hearts Sayonara Wild Hearts Sayonara Wild Hearts...."
@tabris95 Wandersong if you haven't checked it out. I only replay games to hear the soundtracks again and this is one I've played thrice.
Yeah this must just be a part 1. My favorite soundtracks of all time are:
Final Fantasy VII
Ys VIII
Dragon Quest XI S
Katamari Damacy
Katana zero definitely, dead cells has great themes, like the shop theme, Night in the Woods has an incredible soundtrack, like the dream sequence with the different instruments that you add one by one, and the constellations song, Persona Strikers with the Persona5 soundtrack...and i agree with much of the above Undertale's ruins theme...does something to my heart
Honorable mentions, smash bros ultimate, scott pilgram, and donkey kong country 2 on the snes for switch online
@pip_muzz i agree...I find the game to be alright but the damn soundtrack gets stuck in my head
Meh. With the exception of AC:NH I thought none of these soundtracks were too remarkable..
With Breath of the Wild the most unremarkable out of all of them. It's just not memorable; I can't think of a single track that really stuck with me (Unlike Gerudo Valley from OoT or The Sky from SS for exemple).
donkey kong tropical freeze should have made the cut
Breath of the Wild’s OST pales in comparison to DKC: Tropical Freeze’s. Look up Seashore War, Fruity Factory, Funky Waters, or Windmill Hills for a fantastic time.
No TWEWY or NEO:TWEWY is an absolute crime, I'm still listening to those soundtracks to this day, especially when out driving.
Three Houses has a wonderful soundtrack, and even Pokemon Sword and Shield does. The song for the Slumbering Weald still plays in my head to this day!
Personally, I think Axiom Verge has the single best soundtrack of any Switch game. It's one of my favorites of all time and I can't listen to it enough.
I still would have been happy if this list had just said Celeste.
If we're counting in re-releases, remasters, and remakes on this list, then Skyward Sword HD has an amazing soundtrack.
As for the games that are original to the Switch library, I want to say The Origami King and Age of Calamity.
Cyber Shadow, Astalon, and Infernax have my three favorite, not just retro OSTs, but game soundtracks in general on the Switch. They're all an A+ and underrated. Even better, they're all fantastic games.
@Chlocean
Yes! Thank you!
Ace Attorney Trilogy. One of the finest chiptune collections ever created.
Mario Odyssey needs to be on this list!
I don’t understand why people were upset with BOTW’s soundtrack at first. I think it’s absolute mastery and it holds some of my favorite Zelda songs of all time. But every game listed here has a phenomenal soundtrack. I’m a little surprised that Minecraft didn’t make it onto the list!
No Ys 8 or Ys Origin? Uh-oh, Dogi's gonna come busting through your wall any moment now... any moment.
Old School Musical? I mean, it's a game about the sound track
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGTJdW_-i-Y
The Messenger is just banger after banger
No Darkest Dungeon? No Furi? Or even the underrated Tropical Freeze? Crazy list
@Expa0 I don’t think it’s fair to call a list “unbelievably garbage” just because you don’t agree with it. Most, if not all, of these soundtracks are extremely popular and well-loved for a reason. I personally think this is a very solid list, and I wouldn’t have thought of games like Witcher 3 and Splatoon 2 to be here.
BotW is a minimalist masterpiece. It's important to note that silence is music too.
Also: Doom Eternal, Spiritfarer and Blue Reflection.
I mean, Xenoblade Chronicles Def Ed. has the best music in a video game ever. However, I do hope Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap gets a nod because how they reinvented the music and still at any time you could switch to the original without breaking a beat is utter genius. And the amount of love they obviously have for the game really is evident and brought a tear to my eye
The article and comments have mentioned some truly great soundtracks (including Gris and Night in the Woods). Other greats that haven’t been mentioned yet include:
-Crypt of the Necrodancer
-Florence
-Haven
-The House in Fata Morgana (when it doesn’t loop endlessly)
-Hotline Miami Collection
-Minit
-Neurovoider
-Nidhogg 2
-Thumper
I look forward to Part II!
Splatoon's music is the best. I envy japan so much. (Concerts and albums!!)
@Vyacheslav333 it's great that someone mentioned the AMAZING arc system fighting game soundtracks !!!
No Super Mario Odyssey!?
Also, Witcher 3’s soundtrack is fine, but it’s not top 10 list worthy. I’m surprised you guys skipped Skyrim for that one, even if I’d not put either on this list since I feel like Switch has more iconic soundtracks than that.
I'm replaying Sonic Mania right now and man that soundtrack slaps, like holy hell
Was hoping for at least one game that wasn't a shoe in hyper popular million seller. :/
Mariokart! So many memorable tunes
No Scott pilgrim! Shame
Octopath Traveler, Super Mario Odyssey, and River City Girls must be included in part two of this article.
@Zanzox Well, it's because Daisuke Ishiwatari and Raito are COOL and AMAZING composers!
😮NO 'Valkyria Chronicles 4'?
SHOCKING!
I hope its in Part 2...
Pretty uneducated here. So many more games more deserving. Kingdom two crowns for one
My favourite is Walking Dead Theme Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rcuSYrwUpk
I'd put Paradise Killer, Xenoblade 2 and DE, Scott Pilgrim, Fire Emblem Three Houses Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, Phoenix Wright Trilogy and House in Fata Morgana above anything on this list.
You put BotW's minimalist boring soundtrack on there of all things?
Seven of these I haven't played, so no comment.
AC:NH is pleasant.
Undertale's is very nice.
Hollow Knight and A Short Hike is my favorite titles in this list
If I could only keep one video game OST from a Switch game, it would be Hyper Light Drifter. The composer, Disasterpeace, melded sound to image and ambience like nothing I’ve experienced since the golden days of VGM.
So I’m assuming Crypt of The Necrodancer and Cadence of Hyrule will be in the next group of 10?
Other faves of mine include River City Girls, Shovel Knight, Spelunky, Hades and all the Shantae soundtracks.
Clearly this is only going by popular games everyone has heard of with the exception of A Shirt Hike..
Velocity 2x had one hell of a pulse pumping soundtrack.
Cyber shadow and shovel knight are two incredible soundtracks
But overall a great list. Contrary to the incorrect comments above, BOTW has a fantastic soundtrack that’s not minimalist at all - go on YouTube and check out the 100 or so tracks!
I’d say each of those selections are worthy and your list is off to a great start. 👍🏼
I especially like your inclusion of Lena Raine’s soundtrack for Celeste - it’s such an emotional journey. 🥺
And I’ll forever be in awe of the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack.
Off the top of my head, I’d like to see Sayonara Wild Hearts join the list, for its mesmerizing dream pop awesomeness. I’ve got to agree with others’ recommendations of Xenoblade Chronicles, Crypt of the Necrodancer, the Ori games, and MK8. Lately I’m really fond of the Crosscode and Spelunky OSTs. And Chuck Regan’s bluegrass soundtrack for The Flame in the Flood is pure Americana that gets me right in the feels. I’ve never heard anything like it before in a video game. Now there’s a dark horse I’d love to see make your list!
@BanbaScope Glad to see someone else thought of Spiritfarer too
Ori and the Blind Forest..... is the best soundtrack this generation.
No Cyber Shadow means this list needs to be remade.
Great Ace Attorney has an amazing soundtrack as well. That one, Xenoblade 2 and Octopath Traveler are stuck in my head most often I think.
Shout out to #Breakforcist Battle and Just Shapes & Beats.
@pip_muzz Hotline Miami!! Icame here to make this comment, or read this comment. Both game's soundtracks are the only soundtracks I listen to outside their respective games.
Absolute Drift and Space moth.
@tabris95 Its really good you are right, personally i prefer DKCTF's OST, but i would have liked to see it in a top 25 list maybe.
It's really quite hard to nail it down to just 10 with so many games on switch... I could also see The house in fata morgana in here and that one is arguably even more niche
Spiritfarer, Far: Lone Sails, Aerial Knight.
While it's not a Switch exclusive, this list is lacking A Hat in Time.
Breath Of The Wild doesn't have music. Animal Crossing soundtrack is underwhelming. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has really great music and should be listed.
Hey, this comment probably won't be seen, but for the indie games on this list can you link the Bandcamp for each game's respective composers? All of them can be purchased on Bandcamp and the funds go directly go to the composer.
Celeste
Undertale
Ys VIII
Hotline Miami
Astral Chain OST has some stellar moments.
I’d like to point out a soundtrack that I think is criminally underrated: Paper Mario the Origami King. The game is hit or miss for many people, but the songs are genuinely phenomenal.
Smash is like the ultimate soundtrack game that just happen to also feature fighting.
@Expa0 I agree that BOTW's music shouldn't be up there, it's not the minimalistic style, it's the tunes themselves, they're nowhere as memorable, original or atmospheric as the previous games. (zora domain night and rito village are the only standouts for me) but hollowknight's freaking great, man! (I mean just listen to mantis lords, hornet theme or city of tears).
@Mongoosling hey! thanks for sharing that! i didn't know such a website existed, been wanting to purchase OSTs for so long
Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter GU, Skyward Sword, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Okami, Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory, FFXII, Super Mario Odyssey, Pokemon Let's Go and Octopath Traveler all have stellar soundtracks that should be mentioned in the follow-up article!
