Phoenotopia: Awakening (Switch eShop)

Lots of care has gone into the creation of 2D action-adventure Phoenotopia: Awakening and it definitely shows with the gorgeous graphics and atmospheric soundtrack. It's a game that feels vast; a slow burn experience for the patient gamer. It's possible that its difficulty will take some getting used to, but it's worth persevering with this truly rewarding and excellent title - Phoenotopia: Awakening is a thoughtful, coherent game which, if you click with it, doesn't miss a beat. A marvellous surprise.

Eastward (Switch eShop)

Eastward proves itself to be a memorable and enjoyable mashup of many beloved classic titles, combining each of their elements together to forge something that feels distinct and engaging. Creative gameplay sequences, a heartwarming and emotional story, and a killer art style all combine to make this one easy to recommend. That being said, we’d also offer a word of caution that this is a slow burn kind of game; if you’re not a patient player, Eastward’s sometimes lethargic pace may take a lot of enjoyment out of the experience. Wherever you may fall, Eastward is indisputably a game worth checking out, and we’d encourage you to give it a shot.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition (Switch)

If you've polished off Breath of the Wild and you're after another sprawling 3D RPG set in a beautiful open world, Witcher 3 is a truly excellent option. Setting aside for a moment the seeming impossibility that this huge game runs on Switch at all - let alone well - Geralt's journey is one definitely worth taking. Mechanically it may not be as refined as Link's adventure, but it more than makes up for any shortcomings with the scope of its story and ambition of its environments. Witcher 3 is certainly a more 'adult' game than many on this list, but having this epic on a portable system feels like witchcraft and we cant recommend CD Projekt Red's improbable Switch port enough.

Death's Door (Switch eShop)

Death's Door is a modern classic, utilizing old gameplay ideas in a new setting to make for a short and sweet experience you won’t want to miss. The snappy combat, rewarding exploration, and relaxing music will stick with you once you've finished, and while it may not have anything 'new' to offer, Death’s Door is so high quality that you’ll hardly have time to think about it's lack of innovation. We’d give this one a very high recommendation, especially to any fans of Zelda or Soulslike games — Acid Nerve has crafted an experience that’s absolutely worth your time and money.

Blossom Tales II: The Minotaur Prince (Switch eShop)

Blossom Tales II, like its predecessor, is similar to the classic top-down Legend of Zelda games, and by “similar” we mean “almost indistinguishable”. Whereas the original release seemed to take more from A Link to the Past, this release feels like it’s more in line with Link’s Awakening, right down to the confusing owl who occasionally visits to point you in the right direction.

You start out with three hearts and travel an expansive overworld littered with enemies, secrets, and obstacles that you overcome with a slowly growing inventory of useful items. Every now and then, you’ll find yourself in a dungeon filled with puzzles and enemies that are usually ‘solved’ by finding the dungeon’s item, and you eventually clear the dungeon by winning a boss fight which grants you an additional heart and advances the plot a little further. Sure, it's not original — but it's still good fun.

Tunic (Switch eShop)

The opening moments of Tunic fooled us into thinking we were in for a derivative Zelda-like adventure. A diminutive fox-like character wearing a green tunic reminiscent of a certain hero wakes up on a beach. From an isometric camera angle, this fox (known as the Ruin Seeker) finds a sword, and not long after, a blue-and-red shield. Surely, it wouldn’t be long before we discovered boomerangs and bows to solve puzzles with – yet such item-based puzzles never came. Instead, Tunic cleaves its own identity with a handful of brilliantly unique mechanics and with combat pulled from that bottomless well of design that indie developers have yet to run dry: Dark Souls.

Dungeons of Dreadrock (Switch eShop)

The visuals of puzzley dungeon-crawler Dungeons of Dreadrock take strongly after the art style of The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, characterized by cartoonish, but nicely detailed 32-bit sprites and environments. We liked the game enough to give it 8/10, but we recommend you play it for free (or $2.49 if you want an ad-free experience) on mobile rather than Switch if you want to save money!

Nobody Saves The World (Switch eShop)

Nobody Saves the World is a thrillingly well-paced and enjoyable action adventure that Switch owners won’t want to miss. An addictive quest system, surprisingly deep class system, attractive art style, and punchy combat all come together to make for a varied and engaging experience that oozes quality at every turn. If you’re a fan of RPGs with a lot of customization, old-school Zelda games, or classic arcade beat ‘em ups, Nobody Saves the World is absolutely a title you need to add to your library.

And there you have it – a plethora of alternatives that borrow from the hallowed Zelda formula to differing degrees. Honourable mentions go to RiME, Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas and Anodyne, each of which channels the Zelda series in one way or another, although falling short of greatness.

Ultimately, there’s really nothing quite like Zelda, so if there’s a game in the series that passed you by, it might behoove you to track down the ones you missed. Cadence of Hyrule is also a brilliant new spin on the classic top-down formula. Be sure to check out our guide to very best Zeldas if you don’t know your Minish Caps from your Majora’s Masks.

Of course, true fans would also shoot through the Four Swords games, Link’s Crossbow Training, Tingle’s Rosey Rupeeland and the CDi entries, and then travel back to finish the Satellaview-only BS The Legend of Zelda at the time of release – that's the only way to charge your Master Sword to maximum power, you know.

Thanks to Sumimasen for suggesting this list. Have you played any of these games? Did you find that they offered a decent substitute to a Hylian adventure? Are there any others that spring to mind? Share your thoughts below and happy adventuring!
