Slay the Spire (Switch eShop)
Slay the Spire is an endlessly addictive roguelike card-battler that’s a perfect fit for the Switch; a beautifully balanced game that arrived on Nintendo's system with all the benefits of an extended period of Early Access on PC. Its combination of ferocious battles, entertaining chance encounters and selection of three impressively different player characters make every run to the top a nerve-wracking and totally absorbing affair. Massively inventive sets of cards combine majestically into hugely destructive combos and attack and defence options fuse perfectly together, enabling players to use the information provided by the brilliantly transparent Intent system to strategise endlessly against the hordes of foul monstrosities that stand between themselves and victory. Sure, you’ll eventually see every enemy and chance encounter and yes, there are a few framerate niggles here and there, but overall this is one dungeon crawler that will live long in our system memories.
Shadowverse: Champion's Battle (Switch)
Shadowverse: Champion’s Battle is without a doubt the greatest card battling RPG on the Switch yet; an addictive and incredibly deep card game wrapped up in a heartwarming and enjoyable RPG that supplements and supports the potent core gameplay in all the right ways. Dozens of hours of content in single player alone, combined with a full-fledged online multiplayer, ensures that you’re getting plenty of bang for your buck, while the anime presentation and detailed card art and animations keep everything looking and sounding nice all the way through. If you’re at all into card games, don’t waste your time deliberating: go buy this game immediately.
Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars (Switch eShop)
Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is a game that certainly won’t appeal to everyone; this is one that you have to come into with an open mind. It’s pretty short compared to most RPGs and doesn’t take many chances with its gameplay, yet the card aesthetic remains consistently interesting, it’s supported by extremely strong presentation, and that gameplay ultimately proves to be quite satisfying. For thirty bucks, this card game is one of the best concise RPGs you can buy on the Switch, and if any of its art or concepts pique your interest, we strongly recommend you give it a shot.
And, if you really like The Isle Dragon Roars, you can pick up two more entries from the deck — The Forsaken Maiden and The Beasts of Burden, each coming with their own gimmicks.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel (Switch eShop)
Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is an odd game to recommend. Those of you who have never played before may want to check it out—it’s free after all—but even at that lowest of prices, the barrier to entry is so great that it can feel like getting stuck into this one isn’t really worth the effort it would take. Those of you who have a longer history with Yu-Gi-Oh! will have a much better time getting into it and climbing the ranks, but then you were probably going to play this game regardless of reviews. At any rate, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel has all the foundations of a potentially great online card-battler, and though it has its issues — at least at launch — it’s definitely worth checking out if you've got the fortitude to stick with it.
SNK VS. Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash (Switch eShop)
As good as it ever was and now incredible value, SNK Vs. Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash is still essential. Obviously the card-based gameplay isn't going to appeal to everyone, but at this asking price we'd say it's worth a go even if card games usually turn you off, especially if you dig SNK/Capcom's extensive character rosters. Many, many series are represented here and everything you need to learn to play is available in the scanned manual as well in-game via tutorials. Let it get its hooks into you and you've got a bit of a masterpiece here, and we're absolutely delighted that it's graced the Nintendo Switch with its excellence.
Inscryption (Switch eShop)
It’s hard to talk about the specifics of Inscryption without diluting some of its magic. However, its ingenuity is mind-boggling, its mood is devilishly haunting and its presentation is first-rate. As a deckbuilder, it’s stretched about as far as it can go, and by jumping around between concepts it sometimes asks for a lot from the player. The pay-off, however, is one of the most impressive feats of video game storytelling there is. If you’re new to Daniel Mullins Games then you’re in for even more of a treat, but existing fans, too, shouldn’t think they have the measure of what awaits on Inscryption’s dusty old floppy disk.
City Wars: Tokyo Reign (Switch eShop)
City Wars: Tokyo Reign proves itself to be an impressive and immensely enjoyable roguelike deckbuilder that stands out well from the pack. The interesting track system for card placement creates gameplay mechanics you can’t find in any other card battler, while the persistent progression system ensures that you’re always getting something out of every run. Though the low enemy variety and sometimes weak AI can dampen things a bit, and it's not exactly a looker, the depth of the strategic gameplay keeps City Wars feeling fresh and interesting as you go back for yet another run. We’d recommend anyone with an interest or inclination towards card games add this one to their Switch library; there's lots to love about City Wars and it's worth both your time and money.
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood (Switch eShop)
The Tarot deckbuilding aspect is present and correct here, but the wide variety of Witches and the way their stories intertwine is where The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood really shines. Every being that you encounter has a purpose in this story, and all the threads twist together to make a truly beautiful tapestry. Being locked down narrative paths without the ability to return might not be for everyone, but it's a moot point when the story is this good — every playthrough will feel like a brand-new experience.
Balatro (Switch eShop)
Balatro is a roguelike for gamers who don't like roguelikes... and then everybody else on top of that. It utterly nails what it sets out to do, providing an instantly accessible, satisfying, and addictive gameplay loop that anybody can grasp. It's an immensely enjoyable experience from the start, but as you get deeper in, there's really nothing else quite like it. A clear and obvious frontrunner for GOTY 2024. Utterly sublime.
Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate (Switch eShop)
Shotgun King does a wonderful job of setting itself apart from the veritable deluge of roguelikes available today. Its blending of classic chess principles with shooting elements and randomized gameplay makes for a fun and highly replayable experience that we’d suggest you give a shot. If you’re looking for a relatively short, addictive game that requires a bit of thinking to get the most out of, Shotgun King is undoubtedly something you should look into.
Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! (Switch eShop)
Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! does not come to Switch with a swathe of bells and whistles or make a host of changes to Game Freak's weirdest mash-up. It's a simple port of the Apple Arcade version — which, in itself, made very few changes to the 3DS original — but with a game this great, that's no bad thing. Sure, not much has changed since 2016 (even less since 2023), but this charming hybrid card-racer is absolutely worth taking for a ride wherever you can. Giddyap.
Those are our picks, although there are plenty of others bubbling under: games like Lightseekers, Shephy, UNO, The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game, Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution, Mystic Vale and Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission are all worth investigating if you can't get enough cards in your deck. Still waiting for the review of Brawl chess!
Where lord of the rings the card game it's the best card game on switch
Can’t wait for Wingspan ... I think it might be more of a ‘board game’ style but it looks soo cool. I might even get the actual card game version if they end up delaying it
Its time to d d d d d d d d duel!
While I haven’t played it I did just get The Warlock of Firetop Mountain: Goblin Scourge Edition! as it is £1.99 right now (90% off). That looks to be a cool tabletop video game
Slay the Spire is amazing. Only played it on PC, but it was very, very enjoyable!
@Kalvort Agreed, it's easily my most played game on Switch by a landslide (805+ hours current). SteamWorld Quest gets my honourable mention as well.
I'm tempted to grab Hand of Fate 2 at some point, but I ought to slow down on my impulse purchases for now.
I still cant believe they haven't got Pokemon TCGO running on Switch when you can play it on your phone with no problems.
@uhhhhhhhh
The board game version is absolutely fantastic and I cannot recommend it enough.
Someone get on a Baten Kaitos remaster ASAP!
Have played Hand of Fate, Slay the Spire, Steamworld Quest and Thronebreaker. Each one is great, Slay the Spire is amazing but Thronebreaker is on another level!
Armello is dead. I'm not sure if that big update/expansion will come. The last time I played the multiplayer the game froze shortly after we started and we were the only party in the server.
I'm here representing my darling Super Dragon Ball Heroes. As a DBZ nerd it's a lot of silly over the top action supporting what I would argue a pretty shallow card experience. Great fun if found on sale.
There is a criminal lack of One Step From Eden here.
Funny, I picked up 51 Worldwide Games today.
Left off Nowhere Prophet. Just downloaded it in the sale and it's a fascinating game. A deck builder with an interesting Mad Max style narrative. Tough as nails and seemingly underrated (not even a review on this site).
Cardpocalypse is the one I had the most fun with but also one of the shorter ones. basically a parody of pokemon cards.
I have all of those on the main list downloaded bar the Warhammer and Talisman game. All the ones I have played are quite decent but took me a while to get into bar Clubhouse games, love it, & Chess Ultra which is satisfying.
I haven't played Slay the Spire, Faeria or Hand of Fate 2 which carry big reputations in these type of games, I believe. Already downloaded & on my backlog!
I have Yu-gi-oh and Dragonball Heroes as well which are actually my favourite of this featured category (of the ones I have played) The LOTR game isn't bad.
That Warhammer game is great. I just gave it a go out of curiosity. Armello, Slay The Spire and Thronebreaker are all on the wish list, and are guaranteed purchases in the future. I didn't really think this sort of thing would be my jam, but it totally is.
As a legitimate boardgame geek please allow me to be arrogant and explain what a "deckbuilder" is, since it is in the title but you didn't list a single one. A deckbuilder (or deck-building game) is a game where you start every game round with a limited set of cards which you can play, discard and shuffle back to your deck. In most deckbuilders you buy additional cards during your turn and add them to your discard pile, meaning you can play them in one of your future turns. In games like Gwent/Thronebreaker you build your deck BEFORE you start a match, so it is more like a traditional trading card game or living card game. The only deckbuilder on switch I can think of is Mystic Vale. If you want to go analog you can check out Dominion, the game that introduced the Deck-Building-mechanism. But i'd rather recommend games like Clank!, Aeon's End or my personal favorite Cowboy Bebop: Space Serenade.
My total time spent playing Slay the Spire is bumping up close to my total playtime of Breath of the Wild (all shrines and DLC in both Normal & Master mode)
So yeah... I play that game a lot. Its great.
Edit: I'm updating this comment over a year after I originally posted it to say that my time spent playing Slay the Spire has blown way passed my total time spent playing BotW.
I've only managed to clear the 20th ascension with the Defect so far, but hopefully when this list updates again later this year later to add "Marvel: Midnight Sons" I'll have beaten lvl 20 with Ironclad, too.
Edit part 2:
L.O.L. at my excitement for Midnight Suns, only to have the Switch version scrapped.
I've beaten Slay the Spire at Ascension 20 with all 3 main characters (Sorry, Watcher) I still play from time to time trying to see if I can do the final FINAL boss in A20. Ive passed the 1000 hour mark. Still highly recommended.
@PlayingWithPower Slay The Spire has you start with a limited basic deck and build with each run. After each battle you add a card to your arsenal. Pretty sure that classifies.
@PlayingWithPower slay the spire turns into a deck builder if you are lucky enough to get the rune that lets you keep your hand between turns.
@itslukec I think it's the shuffling between turns that disqualifies it as one.
@doctorhino oh haha.
@itslukec I should say "by his definition". I personally always thought deck building was just a term for making a set deck out of the best cards you can get together and having different decks for different play styles.
Billion Road is pretty fun! What we really need is that upcoming Japanese Dokapon game to be localized!
Why does Yu-Gi-Oh not count? Anyway, it’s a great game although I still find the rules a bit unintuitive.
@PortuGuy Violins: I N T E N S I F Y
Clubhouse Games and Slay the Spire is pretty much all you need.
This list is very low on the boardgame apps, there are some great adaptation based on great board games on the switch.
For example: Istanbul, Raiders of the North Sea, Charterstone, Carcasonne, Pandemic and I'm sure there are a lot more.
@PortuGuy oh god, don't do that to me. Don't get my hopes up...
@Broosh It's a very obtuse game I find. I played through the opening tutorials a good 3 times each, and I STILL don't think I fully understand the game. Visuals are fantastic, but I feel like the core of the game and the sheer amount of stuff they throw at you is very overwhelming
@Avol You aren't far off there. Essentially to make the most of your strategy you have to read each card before you start a match to know how to use them.
But even several chapters into the story, I can assure you strategy isn't all that necessary, I still have the basest understanding of the rules lol
@Broosh ayup. I got some extremely strong cards aaaaaaaaaaand I can pretty much steamroll everything main storyline haha
Hi @dartmonkey , has anyone from the the NLife team played Armello recently? I bought it, as did several of my friends when I asked them to, after I saw it on this list and read the NLife review.
The game is in a utterly dreadful state, as a result of updates I think. I’ve had three crashes in the first 15 minutes of the tutorial. My friends have had loads of crashes, too. You really shouldn’t be recommending this game as it is now.
@luke88 It's been a while, to be fair — I'll look into it.
@dartmonkey I’m through the tutorial and I played a complete single player game without any crashes! Hoping the online holds up.
Please don’t worry about it! It seems to have been changed post release and made less stable but am hoping it was mostly just the tutorial! When devs change things post release there’s really nothing you guys can fairly be expected to do. Apologies if my earlier message seemed abrupt, I actually came back online to delete it. Thanks so much for the response, though
@luke88 Ha, no worries. We don't want to be recommending something that's gotten worse over time (which kinda defeats the object of an update in the first place!). Hopefully things improve from where you are, but I'll have a search around — let me know if things deteriorate.
Wingspan is great, you should go play it.
Genuinely shocked that Monster Train isn't up here, being a roguelike deckbuilder with elements similar to Slay the Spire but taking it in a different collection.
Also, Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution certainly deserves at least a mention, even just for its single-player content (giving you over 200 scenarios based on popular anime moments from all 6 - at the time - series) and the Reverse Mode of these scenarios.
Why is it that Nintendo Life is operating as if Monster Train doesn’t exist? It is incredible, and I’m completely confused about why it hasn’t been reviewed or included on this list.
Niceist, but where is YugiOh?!
@KevinLo9 came here to say the same thing! Monster Train, NL, Monster Train!
@DarkTron @KevinLo9 yep! I’m came here to see if Monster Train made the list and then felt compelled to mention it in comments. I only have a couple runs in so far, but it’s great.
@KevinLo9 I'm definitely with you! I even recently changed my profile icon (which is currently the Queen's Impling from Monster Train) to show my appreciation for the game.
Easily one of the very best card battlers/roguelikes to date.
You missed Griftlands. It's a roguelike double deck builder: one deck for negotiation, one for combat. It has a really cool setting and the stories get more interesting the more you unlock. Highly recommended. GRIFTLANDS.
I'd give Monster Train an honorable mention too
Sitting here silently waiting for a Baten Kaitos/Origins port
Thanks for all the Monster Train recommendations. I just realized it’s on GamePass so I’m downloading it now to give it a shot.
@P3nguinpris0N
That’s where I played it first too. Once I beat it for the first time it was announced it was coming to switch, so I purposely waited to play it again until it came to switch.
If you like Slay the Spire you will like it a lot. It’s faster paced and takes some time to learn the buffing systems, but it’s pretty amazing. I can’t stop playing it.
@Shadeon_Koopa
I agree. It’s not just NL ignoring this game too. Check Metacritic. 2 reviews. Maybe it’s because it is exactly the same as the XB and Steam versions, but still…
@Brumblescope
It just keeps getting better. Enjoy it. I love this game.
@geshem
Mitch Vogel told me he asked to review it but was told there wasn’t enough interest to do a review…
It’s a $30 game that made it to #21 on the US Charts without going on sale and with no reviews. Clearly there is interest
I know it's not a Nintendo Switch game but the very best card game that i have played is Baiten Kaitos on the Nintendo Gamecube. Such a great game, and the graphics looked fenomenal for it's time. I trully hope that a new game is ever made for the Switch or the Switch succesor. Baten Kaitos together with Windwaker, Mario Sunshine and the Resident Evil remakes are the games that made the Gamecube a fun and enteraining machine to have.
Im gonna give Shadowverse a whirl, hopefully its fun as the editor of this post has commented above.
@DoubleDate I'm getting into Shadowverse CB recently. About 25 hours in and the card game is still evolving nicely. The "RPG" part of it is silly stuff but you get to play a lot of cards.
@JasmineDragon
Thanks for the input😊 The RPG element is one of the reasons that made me like Baten Kaitos. The story was great too and i liked the design. Im not a turn based battlecards fan but if the game is not all about cards like Yugi Oh where you are battling constantly enemies with all kind of cards or Heartstone then i may be in for it. If it's like those games then i guess its not for me.
I saw the title of this article and immediately thought Dicey Dungeons!
Never been in to the card game style but ive nearly pulled the trigger on Throne breaker a number of times. After reading some of the comments on here i just might during the next sale as i love the Witcher.
Came here to check if Wingspan was on the list. Everything seems to be in order. Carry on.
Uhh Final Fantasy VIII Triple Triad anyone?
Slay the spire and dark souls remastered are the two mainstay games on my switch. Nothing comes close to having a self rolling deck in sts or murdering some red ***** in dark souls.
No Griftlands? No Monster Train? Weird
What about monster train? It is the best on genre.
I find the lack of Monster Train on this list appalling
@KevinLo9 Thanks! Yes. Continuing to have a blast with it. I love the progression of new factions and alternate champions. I havent upped the Covenant level yet, but I will say its base difficulty is much lower than other similar games Ive played.
How long have you played the game and what Covenant lvl do you play at it? (if you dont mind me asking)
@Brumblescope
Glad you’re enjoying it too. Yeah, it feels like every run on the lowest level is beatable, which is a huge change from Slay the Spire or most roguelikes in general.
I am one win away from having beaten every single combination of clans including the 6th clan that is DLC. I have only beaten Covenant Level 1 so far, but it is a notable increase in difficultly even just going up to that level.
My next focus will be on beating all covenant levels.
After that I will try to beat the full DLC with the extra boss after Seraph.
It will occupy me for well over 100 hours. Money well spent to me.
@KevinLo9 I just tried the 1st Covenant level. I lost.
There’s a ton of content here. And all the variation between factions is nice. Enjoy it! Good luck beating Covenant 25. Lol!
MtG Arena on mobile is amazing. Been playing a lot and got great deck made up and not spent a penny.
@Shadeon_Koopa
Same. My most played switch game tied with Deadcells and it was my first rogue game.
I'm forever in love.
@Mr-Fuggles777 I'm upset we havent had a pokemon card game since the Gameboy Color one with the black cartridge.
One of my favorite games ever and I replayed it multiple times. I never do that.
@KevinLo9 @Brumblescope Trust me, Covenant 25 is insane compared to the lower difficulties.
Slowly yet surely I'm gradually trying to beat C25 (plus Last Divinity) with all the clan combinations (9/30 combinations down thus far) because I'm a masochist like that lol. I still love the game regardless though, 214+ hours in according to my 2021 'Year in Review' stats.
@Shadeon_Koopa Dedication! Glad you're still enjoying the game. It is a good one. I've been playing some others things lately, and doubt I'll ever get to C25. But I'm really impressed you've beaten it with 9 clan combinations. Woot!
I can't wait for Inscryption to come to the Switch and instantly be added to this list and permanently stay.
Seriously, you need to add Griftlands to this list.
My favourite is probably Legacy of a Duelist (Yu-gi-oh), but I have enjoyed a fair few of the games listed. The Switch is a good console for these genres
I prefer my card and board games in person at a table. Yugioh would be improved greatly by allowing us to transfer our actual decks from irl to the digital game.
Been having a lot of fun with Card Fighters Clash. I love that there's a level set in a theme park version of the Resident Evil Mansion, and you can play a match against someone named Mikami, as in Shinji Mikami the creator of RE.
@PortuGuy I absolutely love Baten Kaitos, it was way ahead of its time.
@dartmonkey Umm seriously!!!! How did you not even mention Root???? It sits currently at #26 on BBG top 100, only 3 behind Wingspan. Please update your list NL.
Oh, so we are back to pretending Monster Train doesn’t exist on this site? Fun times.
It’s a gem of a game.
I’m at Covenant level 19 at this point.
Are any of these similar to the card-battling in Baten Kaitos? That game had such awesome combat.
Why isn't hearthstone on Switch? I mean does Blizzard not like money?
Sega bring back Phantasy Star Online C.A.R.D. from the Gamecube.
Is Thronebreaker the same as the free to play GWENT app?
...I'd rather put Legacy of the Duelist on here than Master Duel...
I have played many RPGs over the years, but had never being drawn to card based games. A few months ago, while looking for something new, I took a chance on Steamworld Quest (having enjoyed the two SW Digs and read some Quest reviews), and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it.
A few days ago, after becoming aware of and reading reviews for Thronebreaker: A Witcher Tale (although I haven't played the RPG or watched the series), I bought Thronebreaker and have been trying it out. Although I have enjoyed it to some extent, the complexity of the card mechanics, though impressive, may ultimately feel like too much work for me. I'm used to the combat mechanics of more traditional RPGs, but I plan to hang in at least a while longer. May take a chance on Faeria as well.
Slay the Spire, such a gem. Highly recommended to all.
Well, there's that little game RENTO which is basically a Monopoly clone but it's less bombastic than the Ubisoft thing so it plays better. And it's got a live online community. Give it a try if you are into monopoly-like games.
@KevinLo9 If Nintendo Life hasn't reviewed a game then it doesn't exist as far as they're concerned. As to why they still haven't bothered reviewing such an awesome game almost six months since release, I have no idea.
Snagged a physical copy of Shadowverse recently and it's a really good game! Highly recommend it!
I also have Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution and Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission in my Switch collection. They are fine, but the former crashes all the effing time. Irritating!
I hope Voice of Cards 1 and 2 will get a physical release eventually. Come on, Square Enix! I'll even import an English language version from Asia!
Ahh card games ..my next strange indie addiction after roguelikes... which im still always on the hunt for a good one .. been picking up alot of these various games on switch and even on Android to waste time on my phone when switch is unavailable... I even bought a few physical board gsmes and card games too!
After some fixes and a crossplay update, Armello is actually playable now
Eh, Monster Train isn't up here? Lol
BATEN KAITOS!!!
Missing from this are Raiders of the North Sea, Risk and Clue.
Also there are way to many regular videogames on this list.
Wildfrost needs to be on this list.
@StAmbrosius Most people reading this list want to see the games on here a lot more than Risk and Clue.
Can confirm that Dicey Dungeons and Hand of Fate 2 are awesome. And Clubhouse Games is really one of the best games on the platform (especially for Sevens and President).
Um gloomhaven, light fingers and for the king are all pretty solid board games on switch. Gloomhaven just runs very slowly. Dang and Root is on switch and that game is a masterpiece of asymmetric gaming. Also learning Root is so much easier digital than the board game.
@Ironcore 100%!
Wildfrost is a great game....
Three games that need to be on that list:
Raiders of the North Sea, Dokapon Kingdom: Connect, and most of all: Everdell!
This is the first time I've heard about Shadowverse: Champion's Battle, and that sounds right up my alley. I'll have to check that one out!
I really should pick of Hands of Fate 2 again, I barely even played it when I got it. I think it might have been because I'd been playing Witcher so the combat felt horrible after coming off Geralt. I did like what I played though and I barely scratched the surface.
Cobalt Core needs to be added to this list asap
I can tell you what board game to video game isn't good....Pandemic. That is a fun board game, but the video game version is rubbish! I love the board game so much that I picked up the video game to play when I can't together with family and friends to play it. It's terrible.
Club House Games is a fantastic collection. It's worth the purchase.
I've had my eyes on Wingspan and Dicey Dungeon....and now Balatro.
You should add Cobalt Core to this list!
@EngineerMario How does that un on Switch? Is it good?
