The Best Cheap Games On The Nintendo Switch eShop

Here's our pick of the top 5 best deals for cheap games on the Switch eShop right now:

Ape Out (Switch eShop)

Ape Out (Switch eShop)Ape Out (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: Gabe Cuzzillo
Release Date: 28th Feb 2019 (USA) / 28th Feb 2019 (UK/EU)

50% off - was £13.49 / 14,99€, now £6.74 / 7,49€ until 25th May 2020

The Nintendo eShop would be a considerably more exciting and interesting place if it were packed full of games like Ape Out. It’s a refreshingly original experience that more than deserves a place in any Switch owner’s library. Difficult, frenetic gameplay, strong art direction, and an even stronger jazz drum soundtrack make this the sort of memorable game that you’ll likely keep coming back to over and over for another few runs in arcade mode. We’d give Ape Out a strong recommendation to anyone looking for a distinct and unforgettable game for their Switch collection; it’s a bit of an acquired taste, but well worth your time.

NBA 2K20 (Switch)

NBA 2K20 (Switch)NBA 2K20 (Switch)
Publisher: 2K Games / Developer: Visual Concepts
Release Date: 6th Sep 2019 (USA) / 6th Sep 2019 (UK/EU)

95% off - was £49.99 / 59,99€, now £2.49 / 2,99€ until 27th May 2020

On the surface, NBA 2K20’s changes to its own formula might seem less substantial, but spend more than a few hours with its laser accurate recreation of modern b-ball and you’ll soon realise how refined it has become. Changes to Virtual Currency earning and progression take the edge off grinding, new additions to The Neighborhood and Pro-Am help bridge the gap between the two and a few welcome changes to MyTeam help facilitate move space for natural growth (even with the ever-present microtransactions). It’s not faultless, but those looking to play the full NBA experience on a handheld platform can do so with confidence and Visual Concept's approach to Switch is truly laudable. Simply put, there's no better basketball game out there.

Okami HD (Switch eShop)

Okami HD (Switch eShop)Okami HD (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom
Release Date: 9th Aug 2018 (USA) / 9th Aug 2018 (UK/EU)

50% off - was £15.99 / 19,99€, now £7.99 / 9,99€ until 11th Jun 2020

Okami HD is an utterly fantastic piece of software, and we feel you’d be doing yourself a disservice to pass on it. It's a 40-hour adventure that emulates Zelda wonderfully, adds in plenty of memorable mechanics, features one of the most beautiful art styles in gaming, and is completely playable on the go, to boot. It may be showing its age a bit visually and its combat is sometimes a little on the easy side, but Okami is an important, fun, and notable landmark in gaming history — and one of the easiest recommendations we can make for your Switch library.

Mega Man X Legacy Collection is a fantastic re-release of several must-play gaming classics, presenting them as authentically as possible while still including a few modern features on top that help to improve the overall experience and keep it from feeling antiquated. Throw in the new X Challenge mode and an enormous archive of museum content and this stands as the definitive way to play the Mega Man X games in the modern era. Four fantastic games, a bevy of extra content, and the ability to play at home or on the go make this one an easy recommendation.

Bomb Chicken (Switch eShop)

Bomb Chicken (Switch eShop)Bomb Chicken (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Nitrome / Developer: Nitrome
Release Date: 12th Jul 2018 (USA) / 12th Jul 2018 (UK/EU)

50% off - was £11.99 / 13,49€, now £5.99 / 6,74€ until 24th May 2020

There’s nothing particularly revolutionary about Bomb Chicken, it’s enjoyable predominantly because of its classic approach and how refined each aspect of the game is including the core bomb-laying mechanic. Each level is intelligently designed and has a great sense of flow. The puzzles and enemies are fair but challenging and the controls are precise and responsive. Unlike fast food, this isn't a cheap, quick and nasty solution that will leave you regretting your purchase - this is a blast.

And with the growing trend of games plummeting to mere pennies, here's our sub-£1 / 1€ pick for a super cheap game that's worth the memory space it takes up on your Switch...

Mother Russia Bleeds (Switch eShop)

Mother Russia Bleeds (Switch eShop)Mother Russia Bleeds (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: Le Cartel Studio
Release Date: 15th Nov 2018 (USA) / 15th Nov 2018 (UK/EU)

93% off - was £13.49 / 14,99€, now £0.89 / 0,99€ until 25th May 2020

It's fair to say that we weren't massive fans of Mother Russia Bleeds back when it released in 2018. It's a proficiently-made side-scrolling beat 'em up that ultimately fails to drag this already limited genre forwards with any great new ideas of its own. Add in a wearyingly mature aesthetic and you're left with an oddly downbeat button-mashing action game. However, lots of people enjoyed a bit more than we did, and for less than a shiny pound (or euro) beat 'em up fans may want to investigate this bloody brawler.
