You know, there’s a reason why they call it 'Metroidvania' and not 'Castletroid'. As much as the Castlevania series took the whole ‘interconnected 2D map’ ball and ran with it over the past decade while Metroid fans had to do without, it’s Nintendo’s series that first defined the rules and, when handled properly, did it best.
Now here we are, a ridiculous thirteen years since the last 2D Metroid game (2004’s Metroid: Zero Mission), and it’s time for Samus to once again show why she’s the queen of the genre. And who better to make this happen than the team who, just a few years ago, breathed new life into the Castlevania franchise too?
Spanish studio MercurySteam is the outfit that’s been handed the hallowed keys to Nintendo’s sci-fi series, albeit under the watchful eye of Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto. The result is a game that feels unmistakably like a Metroid title – no doubt thanks to Sakamoto-san’s influence – but also introduces a host of new features that actually manage to improve on the classic formula.
This is particularly impressive when you consider Metroid: Samus Returns isn’t actually a ‘new’ game because it’s based on the Game Boy title Metroid II: Return Of Samus. Rather than a modern-day remaster, though, it’s a completely re-imagined take on the 1991 release. It’s been transformed so much that if you put this new release side-by-side with its predecessor, you’d genuinely struggle to see the similarities other than some enemy designs and the fact Samus is the protagonist.
One of the things that’s remained, though, is the plot (such as it is). Since it was released during the 8 / 16-bit era, it’s a fairly simplistic one: Samus has to head to planet SR388 – the place where the first Metroid was discovered in... well, the first Metroid – and make sure there are no more of the little sods left, so they can’t be captured by Space Pirates in the future and used for evil means. There are a total of 40 Metroids in the game, so it’s up to you to explore the large world map to find and destroy every last one of them.
All of the elements that make up your typical 2D Metroid game are present and accounted for in Samus Returns. As ever, you’re exploring a massive map full of areas that are initially inaccessible and, as ever, you’ll discover new weapons and abilities on your travels that will help you finally reach these areas. Samus is initially armed with little more than her basic Power Beam and missiles, but it isn’t long before she’s got the sort of powerful arsenal that Arsene Wenger could only dream of.
Those familiar with the Game Boy Metroid II will already be aware of some of the abilities Samus gains as you progress through the game. The likes of the heat-resistant Varia Suit, the Ice Beam and the High Jump Boots all make their return and are each conveniently located right next to a section of the map that requires you to make use of them in order to proceed (a classic method of encouraging you to discover how each ability works through experimentation, rather than just instructing you through a tutorial).
This being a complete reworking rather than a straight remake, however, there are a bunch of new abilities that weren’t in Metroid II. Some will already be familiar to Metroid fans because they appeared in later games: the Grapple Beam, Power Bomb and Super Missile from Super Metroid all turn up here too, mixing things up substantially and making for a far more varied adventure. Naturally, this is also one of the reasons Samus Returns only bears a passing resemblance to Metroid II: the entire game world’s layout has been completely redesigned to add new puzzles incorporating these abilities that didn’t previously feature.
More exciting though are the four completely new abilities which have never appeared in any Metroid game before (let alone just Metroid II). These are activated with a new yellow energy source called Aeion, which depletes as Samus uses them (it can be replenished with yellow orbs you get by defeating enemies). Since they’re new we won’t spoil them all, but it’s worth noting that the first you get – which turns up early on – is the most useful of the four. The Scan Pulse reveals some of the unexplored map layout near your location for a short while, but more importantly it also makes any hidden destructible blocks in the room flash.
This is a big deal because these hidden blocks are all over the place, and without the ability to easily locate them there would be a whole load of hit-or-miss frustration. Some will consider this taking the easy way out, but the days of getting lost in labyrinthian 8-bit games are over and this new feature ensures you’ll never get so completely stuck that you’ll get annoyed with the game, chuck it to the side and never finish it. It’s a simple ability, but it’s such a useful tool and makes Samus Returns far more entertaining as a result.
There are two even more revolutionary additions, however, which will completely change the way you play Metroid. These aren’t special abilities you unlock, but completely new combat moves that Samus has from the moment the game begins. The first is the melee counter: while you can keep your distance from your enemies and blast away at them with normal shots like you’ve always been able to, you can now also trigger a special counter move at certain times.
When most enemies get near you they’ll briefly flash then charge at you: if you can time it perfectly and hit the X button just as they reach you, Samus will parry their attack with an energy wave and stun them, leaving them wide open for attack. If you fire right after stunning them, most enemies can be finished with a single shot.
It’s an interesting addition that could have potentially gone so wrong – a 2D Metroid game that encourages you not to shoot on sight? – but it’s actually immensely satisfying and learning the timing for each enemy attack gives such a rewarding feeling. By the time you’re only five or six hours in you’ll be strutting through corridors, brushing all manner of ground and air-based enemies out of the way like Uma Thurman at the end of the first Kill Bill. It gives the game a sort of 2D Arkham Asylum feel to it at times, and you feel cool as hell if you can pull off a string of counters.
The other major combat addition is Free Aim. Throughout the entire history of 2D Metroid, Samus’ attacks have always been locked to eight directions: horizontal, vertical and diagonal. For the first time you can now hold the L button to aim your shot, with a laser sight attached to Samus’ Arm Cannon. The level of freedom this gives you while playing is tremendous: you can easily pick off enemies climbing walls, take out baddies who are on a platform just slightly below you or hit grapple points that don’t happen to be precisely above you, or at 45 degree angles.
It may sound like an exaggeration, but once you’ve spent time with the Free Aim you’re going to wonder how you ever managed to do without it, and will possibly struggle when you go back to older 2D Metroid games. The laser sight even glows when you’re aiming at an enemy or other viable target, which means you can continue to aim at a creature even if it wanders off-screen, or hit grapple points that are way above you. It’s fantastic.
The Metroid series is generally known for its spectacular boss battles but Metroid II was the exception, instead focusing on a load of smaller fights. Samus Returns follows suit; instead of a bunch of big battles, the 40 Metroids you have to kill instead serve as mini-boss battles of sorts. These Metroids come in five types – each representing a stage in the creature's life cycle – and as you progress through the game you'll come across increasingly more advanced versions. As you work your way through these variations they'll also pull off a wider variety of moves; some will fire large energy bursts, others will drop to the ground and scuttle towards you, others will run off into the walls mid-battle and require you to find them again in another room to continue the fight. While the idea of 40 slightly evolving mini-boss battles may seem a little repetitive to some, these fights do make bagging each Metroid feel like more of an accomplishment than simply locating them would be. And don't worry, there's still at least one big fight in there, but we're saying no more.
Samus Returns plays great, then – but it looks sensational, too. Given that we’re talking about a move from the monochrome 8-bit Game Boy to the 3DS, it should come as no surprise that this ranks as one of the most stark leaps in quality from original to ‘remake’ that we’ve ever seen in any game on any system. That said, MercurySteam has gone above and beyond the call of duty: this game doesn’t just look better, it looks phenomenal. It’s not necessarily in the way Samus or her enemies look or move: you more or less know what you’re getting there so while they look detailed enough, it is what it is. The jaw-dropping element is the background environments, which are so detailed and give such depth you often forget you’re playing on a 2D plane.
Creatures occasionally wander around in the distance. Industrial areas span back as far as the eye can see, with demolished robots and pneumatic presses showing there was once intelligent life on this planet. In one section, a faraway stone pillar crumbles as you walk past, emphasising that the environment is unstable. The whole thing is mesmerising: Metroid fans will spend half the time looking into the distance instead of what’s going on in the foreground: this is a planet they’ve explored before in Metroid II, but that game had a completely black background: they’ve never actually been able to see or study SR388’s environment in this much detail.
Better still, the game makes incredible use of 3D. The 3DS’s original main gimmick may have been relegated to a mere quirk these days, but Samus Returns’s magnificent backgrounds are an even greater spectacle when they’re given real depth and you get to see just how far into the distance they stretch.
MercurySteam has prior form in this regard, as its handheld Castlevania game Mirror Of Fate is already one of the best 3D games on the 3DS (the theatre section is a personal highlight). The studio has far and away outdone itself here though, and for once anyone with a 3D-enabled system who usually has the effect turned off may find themselves sliding that dusty slider back up to the top (especially on an XL, where the effect is nothing short of an auto-stereoscopic showcase).
Not only are your eyes being treated here, your ears also get the VIP experience. The terrific soundtrack offers grandiose versions of the classic Metroid stings, while fans of Metroid II will be chuffed to hear modernised takes on many of the Game Boy entry’s often forgotten themes. The entire package, both in terms of sight and sound, makes for a gushing love letter to all things Metroid.
It’s big, too. Far, far bigger than Metroid II, in fact. The Game Boy version could be completed in around four or five hours: indeed, beat it in less than three hours and you got to see Samus in a bikini (look, it was a different time back then). This is far from the case with Samus Returns, thanks to the completely redesigned map and the addition of all the new features and abilities. Put it this way: we played through the first few hours of Samus Returns at a solid pace. We didn’t really get stuck and only died once or twice during that time. After four hours – roughly the time it takes to beat the Game Boy version – we decided to save the game and check the save file to see our progress, just for the sake of comparison. With exactly four hours on the save file we were under a quarter of the way to the percentage completion. And that’s on normal difficulty, before you unlock Hard mode (or use the new Samus amiibo to unlock Fusion mode).
Conclusion
Don’t be fooled by the connection to Metroid II: this game has been revamped, redesigned and rejuvenated to such an extreme degree that to all intents and purposes it’s a brand new adventure. This is far and away one of the best Metroid games ever made, and one of the best examples of the entire Metroidvania genre as a result. Melee counters and free aiming have made combat feel fresh and exciting again, while the environments are incredible – especially when viewed in auto-stereoscopic 3D. It’s a given that this is a must-buy for Metroid fans, but it’s also essential for those who’ve never played a 2D Metroid and want to see what the fuss is all about. This is what the fuss is all about, and the wait was so, so worth it.

whoa
Woooo. Still wish it was on Switch but I'm still happy it's something people can enjoy.
Switch port immediately please.
Worried??? Who was worried?
give metroid fans a new side-scroller, they still complain
inb4 some comments about "how things aren't set in stone" ect...
Huh ?
10/10 for a typical 2D Side Scrolling ?
@AlexOlney Seriously, it being on 3ds is the only thing keeping me from buying it.
Flipping heck. I'm going to have to buy this thing now.
Sounds like you can barely call it a "remake".
More like a "Rebuild".
Special edition, console and amiibos will be waiting for me when I return.
Along with extra amiibos I wasn't able to cancel in time.
@Anti-Matter Define 'typical'
Not the biggest Metroid fan, but I'll probably still get this.
@Anti-Matter Nintendo needs to see those 10's flying, or we're getting the next 2D Metroid in 30 years from now.
The reason I bought a 3DS - can't wait for this.
On this for sure. No way am I waiting for a switch port that won't appear for at least 12 months.
It's very important that Nintendo fans support this game if they want Nintendo to keep making Metroid games.
@Kalmaro
Well...
Nintendo has a lot of 2D platformer such as Super Mario Bros, Kirby, Metroid, Starfy NDS, Yoshi Wooly, etc.
They are look almost same in gameplay but in different background story and power ups.
Decent games in my opinion.
Not bad but not really impressive for me.
Admittedly I was more looking forward to that squishy Metroid amiibo but dang, 10/10? Didn't expect that, now I'm hyped for Friday!
Welcome back Guuurrrl, welcome back!
I certainly was not expecting such praise, I expected enjoyment and commendation, but nothing this glowing. Now I'm really excited for Friday.
I was afraid this drop like Mirror of Fate. Now I can sleep well. 87/100 in Metacritic til now. Now, I hope it sells very well.
@Anti-Matter have you played any of the 2d metroid games
@yoshinatsu
Well...
I'm not a fan of Metroid games but I pray for the Best for Metroid series.
Hopefully Metroid fans will be fascinated by Metroids Prime 4.
10/10? Really!? I would dismiss this score, but the review was so well written and compelling that make the score sounds right and now I really want to play this game!
@Anti-Matter I think it looks the same to you because you largely don't know much about the game from personal experience.
@Frank90 This is the highest score, the lowest score being 8/10 (86% score average this far).
I'm happy to see the 3DS still alive and kicking!
Whoa, surprising and cool to see the review embargo dropped and pretty much all reviews giving praise for the game.
Shame the limited edition was handled in such an extra super limited sense that it was sold out before it really was in the shops.
I got chills reading this review. I can't think of a better swansong for the 3DS. It's been a good nearly seven years, but this will likely be my last major 3DS retail purchase.
"You know, there’s a reason why they call it 'Metroidvania' and not 'Castletroid'."
because it sounds better?
As for the game, I don't know if I'll pick it up.....but I'm glad Metroid fans have been rewarded for their patience.
Really looking forward to Friday super excited!
@AlexOlney It'll happen late in the Nintendo Switch's lifespan; Hyrule Warriors, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Yoshi's Wooly World
@MariOnline He doesn't seem to know that many of the best games ever made are 2D side-scrolling games.
@MariOnline
Actually never.
But from the gameplay that I watched from Youtube, i'm not sold with kind of games like that.
I have New Super Mario Bros 2 3DS , Super Princess Peach NDS & Yoshi Wooly World 3DS but only New Super Mario Bros 2 & Super Princess Peach NDS that I have finished the storyline once but Yoshi Wooly World 3DS still not finished yet (still on World 1). I have some interest with some 2D Platformers but not as Strong as Animal Crossing New Leaf with genre Life Simulation as my Best genre to play.
So, my reaction about Metroid games was Okay... but not interested. I just wondered about 10/10 for a 2D Action platformer games. Never expected before, so I congratulate Nintendo that can deliver great 2D Metroid for 3DS.
Great for those looking forward to it, but I've moved on from the 3ds. Oddly enough this is the first game to make me want the VC on Switch. It makes me want to finally give Super Metroid a try.
Well, just ordered a snes Super Metroid cartridge because I wasn't planning on getting Samus Returns at release. This review does get me hyped for it though, so I'll probably get it sooner rather than later.
Still going to just rent it through gamefly. I need to save some money and I'll most likely only play through it once.
...is it Friday yet?
For all the issues people have with Nintendo, they basically only release games that require accolades trailers. Between this, BotW, Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids, etc., I don't know if there's ever been a period filled with so many great games.
Welcome back Samus you have been missed.
Hopefully this sells well enough for Nintendo/Mercurysteam to make a new 2D Metroid for Switch. Lack of a 3DS makes this difficult to miss.
Got the European limited edition pre ordered xD just need the freakin amiibo
@BlueOcean
My Best 2D platformer game so far was Super Princess Peach NDS.
This is the only 2D Platformer game that I have finished 99.99 % 3 years ago (I got the game on December 2014, finished the storyline in just 3 weeks)
Well... the other 2D platformer games that I have practically not really 100 % finished. Some of them still stuck on 1st or 2nd world depend on my mood.
@Muddy_4_Ever
Don't forget, People are ignorant.
They compare PS4 and Switch games and graphics.
Here's a little reminder: pretty much all the games you get on Ps4 you can get on pc.
GIVE ME THIS GAME! I've got it preloaded and waiting for Friday.
Really glad it's not on Switch actually because I'm one of the few that LOVES the 3D effect. I've always had the 3D slider up 100% since day 1 and I'm excited for a game to take full advantage of it again.
Metroid 2 was one of my favorite childhood games and along with Link's Awakening, one of my greatest childhood gameboy memories.
This is a dream come true.
Special edition and 2ds xl coming this Friday .
@Anti-Matter Hmm, I think that you have played few 2D side-scrolling games, I'm not reproaching that at all, but obviously that is the reason why you made that comment.
Great to see a grand return for the franchise. May have to re-buy a 3DS just for this although I'm holding out slight hope for Metroid: Samus Returns Deluxe on Switch a few or so months down the line.
Nintendo is absolutely killing it this year.
I can see a lot of people not buying this on 3DS in the hope of it coming to Switch. That could be bad for future titles in the 2D franchise.
You had me at "welcome back".
Heck yeah, this is my most anticipated game since Brawl back in '08! Christmas came early this year!
Never played a Metroid game. Never owned any other console aside from the 3DS and the Switch due to lack of resources. But I'm giving this a try, and hopefully like it in preparation for Metroid Prime 4.
Metroid II on the Game Boy was my first ever Metroid game. I have fond memories of the world, the enemies, the music, but the biggest thing was always the atmosphere. It was amazing how a little monochromatic display could convey a sense of utter loneliness and isolation, and the terror of enemies being around every corner. I cannot wait for Friday, welcome back Samus, we've missed you.
A lot of people hoping for a Switch port. Has Nintendo ever given any indication that they would do something like that? I think it's pretty unlikely, especially with the whole Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon thing. I'll just buy it for the 3DS, we need to show with our wallets that we want more Metroid.
It's worth reading the Eurogamer review for an alternative and more critical perspective, for those still unsure about this game. It's a short review but good to hear a differing opinion.
I'm getting the Legacy Edition regardless, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the game, but I have always had doubts about the 3D aesthetic for a 2D Metroid game, and the counter attack ability which feels very 'Un-Metroidy' to me. Still, I'll find out soon enough!
@LtAldoRaine Or, we can show with our wallets that we would rather play the game on Switch. Don't feel like buying the game for a system I won't play it on.
Wow, that is one seriously hyped review. I don't really care about Samus or 2D platformers but even I want to play it.
Seems like the 3DS is far from dead w/ this, MH Stories last week and S&M Ultra still to come. I may have to keep my eye out for a Black Friday deal after all.
Well made by the sounds of it and another outside studio to go with Tantlus that Nintendo can utilize to make remakes, enhanced versions, etc.
Well done MurcurySteam........you just secured yourself another source of income and potentially a Nintendo fan base
I have not played my 3DS since I got the Switch. Really wish this was for Switch but I will probably have to grudgingly buy it for 3DS. Then I won't play it for six months by which time they will announce Metroid: Samus Returns DX for Switch.
Awesome! Can't wait for Friday.
The game explains why there are doors and elevators in SR-388?
Because this doesn't make sense at all!!!
why do people want a switch port? the 3D is one of the best features of this game.
@LtAldoRaine "Has Nintendo ever given any indication that they would do something like that?"
Well not exactly, but SSB version on 3DS, SMM port on 3DS, Yoshi Wooly World port on 3DS, MK8 Deluxe on Switch, WW HD and TP HD on Wii U. Pokken DX on Switch. So there's precedent for a port. And if not a port, there's a lot of GB VC on Wii U. So yes, it could happen.
We live in a time of ports - every PS2 game on PS3 in HD, every PS2/3 game on PS4. VC on every system. Remakes. Remasters. Resident Evil 4 has been on almost as many platforms as Netflix. Okami is trying to catch up. Id' say a port of this on Switch in time for MP4 is 50-50. Let's see how many more ports they announce tomorrow night in the ND, I'm expecting at least 1, either SSB or SMM on Switch. Though SMM2 is just as likely as a port, wouldn't take much.
Wow a perfect 10, I own the original Metroid II for Game Boy and one of MercurySteam's game (Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate) for 3DS and I thought both would not turn this into an A+ remake but damn this awesome.
@AlexOlney that would take it to eleven.
@Kalmaro This game is the sole reason I bought a New 2DS XL. I've never owned a 3DS system before, but I could let this game go without playing it. It's going to be a few weeks before I can buy the game so I need to wait a little longer....
I understand people that only have a Switch not buying the game for 3DS but why people that already have a 3DS think that there will be a Switch "remaster"? I'm not sure what could be remastered here, because the review doesn't mention any technical details of the game but it does mention unrelated films. Is it 60 fps or 30 fps? Does it run better on New 3DS/New 2DS like Yoshi's Woolly World? I can't find information about that and the reviewer doesn't say anything so who knows.
An hypothetical Switch version would be better (resolution, at least) but it would be missing the 3D which seems to be particularly great in this game.
@Lina-MG If you knew the lore well, you'd know why.
@manu0 The 3d being the best part of Metroid's game is debatable.
Great view. Waiting for my pre-order.
I really want this game to do well, but after buying Mario + Rabbids and Binding of Isaac, I'm going to have to skip it this month. Also, it not being on Switch is a bit of a bummer. I'd probably find the money somewhere if this were a Switch game. :s
GAH! If ONLY this were Switch! I'd be way more excited. I'm still getting it, but the way I'm feeling, I want to just rush through, utilise EBGames' 7 day return policy, then refund and use the money for something on Switch, and the praying for a "definitive" HD Switch version...
Does it play the same on the old 3DS as the new 3DS?
Anyone who's tried S&M with an old 3DS will know why I'm asking.
@Phazon Exactly. The Nintendo/PC combo has generally been the most sensible (and value conscious) gaming approach.
Still can't get over how it was just casually announced before the treehouse and now 3 months later it's out! 😀
It's been too long Samus! Welcome back 😭
WOW. if it gets reviews like this everywhere.... to say "THIS is what the fuss is all about"....... so cool. let's get some speedrunners working on it!
If you want a new 2D Metroid game on the Switch, the best way to show that to Nintendo is to buy this game on the 3DS.
A Switch port is not going to happen (for a few years at least), so if you own a 3DS, why wait? Waiting will hurt the chances of getting another 2D Metroid on the Switch.
I went as far as to buy a New 2DS XL (my first 3DS system ever!) just for this game. That alone tells you how much hyped I am for it.
Another perfect score. Hhmmm.
I didn't wait for the reviews. I pre-ordered a few days ago as every preview was very positive. As a Metroid fan, I know what I'll be playing from Friday onwards!
Argh. I'm clearly going to love this. I need more free time!
Looking forward to putting my hands on it! Well done, Mercury Steam! Now, make another 2D Metroid for Switch, pleeeease!
"beat it in less than three hours and you got to see Samus in a bikini (look, it was a different time back then)"
And a better one.
I've had such mixed feelings on the Metroid series. I loved the Prime games and enjoyed Other M, despite its reputation. I've tried to play the 2D games over the years and just have never been hooked. If there's a demo, I would love to try this out and see if this is the one that clicks for me.
Whoa, 10?😲
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's great, right? Nintendo is still making hits.
Friday can't get here quick enough!
This is going to be my first Metroid game, so very glad it's being seen as one of the best ones!
A Scullion 10 is a 10 you can trust. I've read Eurogamer's take, but having read Chris's work for ooh, about 8 years or so now, I know he wouldn't hand out the top score without the game earning it in his eyes.
Graphics look quite basic to me.
Maybe you need to see it in person.
Very excited for this game. Had never played a Metroid game until Prime 3 on my Wii, but I quickly fell in love with them. I actually quite liked Metroid Other M (gasp) - and I have been itching to replay that game. The trouble is that my son is going to want to borrow the new 3DS game.... Maybe I need to buy two copies.
Extremely pleased this is on 3DS in glorious 3D. The system needed to close out with a quality metroid game.
Wow. Neat.
High praise. Lets hope sales do just as well.
Eurogamer didn't like it at all, which is a bit worrying. I've actually gone back to replay the original Metroid II this past week or so and I've been through it five or six times now (my best time is 1h:45mins) so I'm not in the slightest bothered by the linear structure that Eurogamer didn't like.
That said, the combat does sound worrying. Does Metroid really need lots of the basic cannon fodder enemies in the tunnels to be invulnerable to attack until they open themselves up to be stunned by a melee move? The game should prioritise exploration over prolonging combat.
@AlternateButtons A little after E3 and the announcement (Well technically I bought a cheap, rather nobbled second hand one, then changed it to one of the new 2DS XL's because I wanted to play SNES games).
@Kalmaro Just saying Nintendo UK and NL are getting very cosy. It's a mutually beneficial relationship.
Their reviews nearly always seem to be 10% above the average score. They're 1 of only 3 sites to give this game a perfect score. The other sites aren't great. And there was a recent Switch game that they gave a perfect 10 to, the only site to do so. It was Splatoon 2.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/switch/splatoon-2/critic-reviews
Vooks I see has since given it a 10 too. I'm just saying, I don't remember a review where their score is below the average. I'm sure Samus Returns is great, don't get me wrong, I've the Special Edition ordered. I would like to think that they're professionally impartial. This is now the highest reviewed game made by Mercury Steam.
I'd like to be able to take their reviews seriously for being completely honest, I may ignore them if they're overly positively biased, in the same way I don't read Gamespot's reviews for having a tendency to be overly negative about some Nintendo games.
My GOTY
Whats a zelda?
Bad breath!
Whats a Mario?
Too much Mario!
What's a Persona?
Too much weeb!
Metroid the best roid.
Wow! Great score. I was expecting a decent score but this is certainly higher than I saw coming.
A Metroid game is the one thing the 3DS needed to be one of my all time favorite Nintendo consoles. It's rather fitting then that this is most likely its last big title.
I was very sceptical when I first heard that this games is made by Mercury Steam, since I didn't like Castlevania: Mirror of Fate. Now that reviews are starting to drop, I'm not worried at all anymore.
Welcome back, Metroid, I've missed you
Guess I'm going to buy this.
I just really wish this was on Switch.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Nintendo UK and Nintendo Life have always been a bit cosy.
Nintendo Life's been featured on the eShop before after all, with their own recommended 3DS eShop titles.
@Anti-Matter
They're all totally different in gameplay, graphics and sound . It sounds like you haven't played them at all.
A 10 seems skeptically high, but regardless, I simply cannot wait. It's sitting pretty at an 88 on Metacritic. Sounds like a winner.
Hype intensifies
@Anti-Matter Super Princess Peach? Are you for real right now? That game was so bad! Lol
Excellent, well written review. Still not getting it, as my 3DS has a broken circle pad that I don't really want to bother fixing (and, well, shallow as that might sound, I just can't seem to get very excited about the old portable anymore).
Definitely getting Prime 4, though, even if I'm 100% not a fan of first-person games, so hopefully that makes up for it.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
I checked 3 other sites and while this one is the highest score, the others are quite high too. Given that this is a Nintendo fan site, whereas the reviewer should be more excited than a generic video game site about a new Metroid release, the score makes total sense.
Game spot: 9/10
IGN: 8.5/10
Polygon. 9/10
What a pity it's on the outdated, low-res, soon-to-die 3DS. The game will probably never be seen again except on an unofficial emulator. What an absolute waste.
I never managed to play the original. Couldn't get past the monochrome graphics. So this is a brand new 2D Metroid for me - and a great one it seems.
'it isn’t long before she’s got the sort of powerful arsenal that Arsene Wenger could only dream of.'
Classic Scullion
good to see nintendo actually listening to its fans lately <3(and seeing all the money they are leaving on the table)
between this great metroid rebirth, the rerelease of the nes mini and statements about continuing snes production im really happy with nintendo for the first time in a long time, like 3 years. i was going to buy dragonquest11 and never touch or speak of nintendo again but with such a bright future now i may even get a switch at this point =D
It's not the first time I've pointed out the disparity of this sites reviews and everyone else.
https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/nintendo-switch/splatoon_2#comment4047073
Samus Returns is averaging 88% on Metacritic.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/3ds/metroid-samus-returns/critic-reviews
That's a 12% difference.
I didn't own a 3DS until I found out this was coming, so I preordered the SAMUS EDITION 3DS, Special Edition of the game and the Amiibo 2-pack.... I think I have a METROID problem.
Castlevania and Metroid are my two favorite game franchises.
(side note) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.... YOU'RE NEXT!!
Even factoring in the 10% NLife bump this sure seems like a pretty good game.
Well crap, I was half hoping they screwed it up so I wouldn't have to break out my 3DS again. Read a few reviews, and it looks like I'm picking it up this weekend. Love me a good 2D metroidvania!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE With the greatest of respect, I'm not responsible for any other 10s on this site and my score was not influenced by anything other than my own personal opinion of the game. In fact, I emailed the team before submitting my review warning that it was looking like a 10 and asking if that was okay.
The 10 was my decision alone as a freelancer and was in no way influenced by the NL staff, so if by a "cosy relationship" you're implying that I gave this game a 10 to help out Nintendo then that's really far off the mark. I wouldn't have been able to do this job for 11 years without being honest.
It's always been my view that game critics' scores should be compared to their own scores for other games and nothing else. My 10 for Metroid is in no way related to any other Nintendo Life 10s, because I didn't write those. Different reviewers have different tastes.
Hope that helps reassure you a little!
Woo! So ready to play thisss.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Just stop please, accept that opinions are just that. Constructive criticism is fine but not this conspiracy theory bull crap.
@scully1888 Fair enough. I'm just saying this sites reviews are averaging higher than elsewhere.
"I emailed the team before submitting my review warning that it was looking like a 10 and asking if that was okay."
Is that not a bit strange?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE yeah, NL is certainly the outlier most times score wise.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not at all. I think it's common courtesy to inform a publication you're freelancing for that you've decided to give a game their highest accolade. To clarify, I'd already finished the game at this point and was about to write the review.
Please just sell well! Thankfully I'm sure collectors (And to an extend, scalpers) are going out their way to buy the Limited Edition, the game with that sweet Metroid 3DS Console and even pick up the amiibo as well.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not only is it not strange, I'd suggest it's a common practice. Many (if not most) outlets have multiple sets of staff eyes on reviews, especially for big releases like this. It makes for better writing.
@FX102A Extra Metroid Amiibos? Like the new ones? I wasn't able to snag a preorder and would pay more than retail to get them. I was going to go out on launch day and search every store, but if you have extra and would be willing to sell, I'd buy.
@UmbreonsPapa
I'm in the same boat. I love Prime, but I think the early Metroid games are awful. Seemingly considered classics just because they're old and associated with Nintendo. However, Metroid Zero Mission made Metroid 1 playable and enjoyable, and I expect this has done the same for Metroid 2, ironing out many of the more archaic and infuriating aspects.
Really impressive how quick NintendoLife is with bringing us quality video reviews. The jokes are somewhat silly but entertaining.
Anyway I'll try to convince anyone who I see owns a 3DS to buy this game. 2D Metroid can not go extinct!
spoilers: if you beat the game in under 3 hours samus takes off her suit to reveal she's actually kirby, explaining why we haven't heard anything about that 3DS kirby game yet
Fantastic to see this game perform so well. I'll most certainly be playing it a ton this weekend since I'll be home from school. Can't wait!
Spoiler warning... I've seen a clip of the game in action, and Samus' finishing move for a newly-added boss is just her nonchalantly shooting to her right, thus putting the boss out of its misery.
If that's not Samus' comeback, I don't know what is.
Welcome back indeed, Samus. Welcome back indeed.
If this was on Switch I'd definitely get it even though I wasn't a huge fan of Metroid II, mainly because it didn't follow what would become the 'metroidvania' formula. A strange term as Symphony of the Night aside, Castlevania was better as an action platformer.
Oh well I guess I'll just have to play the king of the genre when my mini Snes is delivered 😃
I thought I'd never reach the bottom!
Shows that 2D Metriod just works!
@bezerker99
Hopefully it's as good as Other M.
I'm just a little bit worried, because I've read quite a lot about people not buying this game hoping it will come to Switch one day, which might influence the sales figures negatively.
By all means, this game deserves to sell well.
Will pick up down the road.
Another youtuber I watch gave this a 9/10 as well, so I'm pretty excited to play this reimagining actually. I hear the 3D is actually good on this too which is nice to have a reason to keep the slider turned up lol. Luckily i'm off Friday so i should be able to get some good time in with it this weekend.
@AlexOlney Please please please hope you're right and we get a Switch port!
It's nice of Nintendo to keep supporting the 3DS but I'm surprised this isn't already announced for Switch seeing as it's their new console and the fans have wanted a new Metroid for so long...
Positive feedback from several different reviews. Could this actually be better than the sublime AM2R?
Friday, where are you?
I personally wish it had 2D drawn sprites. That'd be lubbalubba gorgeous.
I know people want this on Switch- I do too, but don't let that stop you. We've waited how long for a new Metroid? This game could have released for the gosh dang DS and I'd still buy it.
After all, I know my preference is Switch but ultimately games trump platforms, and if ever there were a game which justified one more trip down 3DS lane... this would be it.
@Kenni
Not buying the game will do nothing to see it come to Switch. Truth is I doubt it'll ever leave 3DS, at least not for another decade or so. But don't worry, people like that are far and few between.
If, after 7 years of crying for a new Metroid people find an excuse to not buy it, they lose all credibility, and will have no right to demand another game in the future.
I can't wait to play my pre-ordered copy.
@scully1888
"I emailed the team before submitting my review warning that it was looking like a 10 and asking if that was okay.
The 10 was my decision alone as a freelancer and was in no way influenced by the NL staff"
This contradicts itself.
Not worth a 10 when content is locked behind amiibo!
Ultra Moon and Metroid will keep my 3DS going through the end of the year. The 3DS has now replaced my Vita as my 'play if you can't sleep' system, with my Switch my primary console and handheld. I haven't touched the PS4 or the Xbox in months. What is this madness?
@justin233
What do you mean by Bad for Super Princess Peach ?
I Like the storyline concept (Role Reversal, not Damsel in Distress anymore), 4 Emotion Powers, the Music and World design. I have finished the game and Unlock everything, except for the mysterious Starfish as Enemy Glossary.
Just because the main character is Woman (Peach) it doesn't mean the game will be bad.
@Franklin No it doesn't. I'd already decided on the 10 and was giving the team the heads up on case their policy is to discuss any 10s as a group. Some publications like to double check and make sure it's completely right when they're about to give a game their highest accolade, especially when it's not a regular staff member doing it. This isn't an issue though: the lovely folks at NL always trusted my judgment: the 'heads up email' thing is just my own policy. I know some folk are really keen to find a conspiracy here but there isn't one
Anyway, that's all I'll say on it: it's unprofessional to get into debates like this Thanks for the kind words, everyone else: can't wait for you all to get your hands on the game and have more discussion about it.
@Anti-Matter same for metroid. Just because the main character is a women doesn't mean it's a bad game
@MariOnline
I know if Samus is a woman in Disguise.
But, unfortunately i'm not interested with the concept of Metroid.
It doesn't mean the game is bad.
It just not appeal for me.
And I didn't say Metroid is a bad game, MariOnline.
The Metroid paradox has never been more clear then in message boards-- "we want a new Metroid! Make it good!" In comes new Metroid, it's better than good. "Eh, I'll wait to see if this comes out for the Switch". Yes, this game could look rad on the Switch, but a port would be years away--if ever! And only then if this game produces numbers now.
@scully1888
I accept that there's no deliberate bias here towards Nintendo nor a conspiracy, and indeed it does seem a good idea to consult other staff members.
I think you were perhaps a little over zealous in defending yourself and poor in your phrasing.
"no way influenced by the NL staff"
Is categorically contradicted by:
"asking if that was okay."
There would be no need to ask if their opinion equated to absolutely no influence. Not unduly influenced by NL staff, perhaps. You can't claim in "no way" influenced if you asked if it was OK.
@Anti-Matter oh ok. Sorry
Sweet but I'll wait for a switch port.
Samus is back, baby.
@Anti-Matter Haha wow, way to put words in Justin233's mouth! He never even made any mention of the protagonist being a woman, you were the one who made it about that...
I also understand your comparison of Mario, Yoshi and Kirby, but Metroid is nothing like any of those series. Of course, it's still your decision by all means to be uninterested in it despite that.
For once I will play an entire 3DS game in full 3D. This game sounds incredible. Even as a big fan of Metroid, I thnik this game will be just as great if not better than the best games in the series. I can't believe we are only days away!
I've been seeing great reviews for this game all over the place. Metroid is back, baby.
Now everyone....... GO OUT AND BUY IT.
@Anti-Matter Well, you did say it's a "typical 2D side -scrolling" game with no experience on the game. We get the type of games you like Anti, but you really close yourself a lot with games outside of those franchises you like and even share severe or insulting comments about said games even if you don't mean it. It's a shame, because the metroid franchise has a lot of heart and it's not a game about just shooting aliens, but also discovering how Samus was raised by a peaceful and advanced race.
She as a child with a chozo:
http://metroid.retropixel.net/games/metroidzm/walkthrough/10_05.gif
A drawing she made when she was a child, which is probably one of the most heartwarming scenes I've seen without trying hard:
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f7/86/b2/f786b2c18c70c8f3329fb9c6c5b1f315.jpg
I understand if you have no interest Anti, but that doesn't mean the game can't excel or that it's just "typical". It also doesn't mean that you get all about it by just watching a trailer. Nintendo's franchises have heart and there's a reason why Metroid is one of them.
Now was that so hard, Nintendo? Just making, or heck just hiring someone to make, a competent traditional Metroid?
@Franklin In saying my decision to give it a 10 was in no way influenced, that means nobody at NL asked me or pressured me to give it that score. I had already decided it was a 10 before bringing the score up with the staff. I hope that clarifies it.
Wow. A definate mist buy then for me. Just in time for my 2 weeks off work.
Who cares what the number given to it at the end of the review is?
Just read the review and make your mind up from that
@Anti-Matter It had nothing to do with Peach being a woman. That's just silly. Don't put words in my mouth.
All I was saying is that SPP is not the game people think of when they think of good 2D platformers - yes, I've played it fully. Also, Metroid isn't really a platformer, per se.
(Rolls eyes)
Besides me retiring my 3DS, I honestly would love to give this a go, but I am not going to make this a priority over my Switch games-to-do list-- I need to finish Zelda:BotW, then prep for Fire Emblem Warriors and Super Mario Odyssey. I am, though, VERY HAPPY it got a high score and if I ever have the time, I will try to rent it and play it.
If I hadn't finally picked one up last year (for cheap!), I'd finally be buying a 3DS to play this game.
@AlexOlney lol
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Yes, but what is the cause? Do NL reviewers give Nintendo games higher scores because they work at NintendoLife? Or are both an effect of the same cause: namely, that they're Nintendo fans?
At any rate, USGamer gave it a perfect score (5 out of 5), and I trust their reviews as well as anybody's.
@BravelyDavid I would be willing to sell, although this would involve international shipping as I am based in the UK.
On the one hand, the visuals of this game look great and I look forward to playing it.
But on the other hand, this is a full priced game that offers no multiplayer/online features (that I'm aware of), no new story...
I don't remember seeing anything in the review about music and sound design, so I wonder how that is.
My intuition tells me this is more a 9 than a 10 to me, but as I've never actually played Return of Samus that could change and I look forward to finding out.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE There are some times they go below the average for some games.
Even a "main" Zelda game:
https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/3ds/legend_of_zelda_tri_force_heroes
@Olmectron Tri Force Heroes. lol That's not a mainline game.
First Metroid that i played was GameBoy version, this i buy too but when we'll see
@Eagle9 @invictus4000 I played the Gameboy version too but never finished it because I kept getting lost. Think I'm going to download the 3DS version now so I can actually complete it this time.
Links Awakening was one of my greatest childhood memories too
@scully1888 What about the frame rate, is it 30 or 60 fps? Does it run better on New systems?
Does this game take
Advantage of the new 3ds hardware?
" The Game Boy version could be completed in around four or five hours: indeed, beat it in less than three hours and you got to see Samus in a bikini (look, it was a different time back then)."
Indeed, there was a whole lot less of that kind of thing. (;
@FragRed My excuse for not buying this on 3DS is I don't have a 3DS. I don't think Switch/3DS owners are dumb enough to skip this game just because it's on 3DS.
@Franklin I am one that has complained about NL and others giving high scores to somewhat mediocre Nintendo games but what @scully1988 says makes sense to me, he was just being courteous.
If he was told by NL that a 10 should be discussed or was not be appropriate, very unlikely seeing NL reviews of first-party games, he would have lowered it to 9 (NL doesn't use decimals), but he wouldn't have changed his text nor his mind.
The "perfect score" is something special for some websites and magazines, certainly not for NL or UK's Official Nintendo Magazine where he worked at but for Edge or Famitsu, to name two, they are. Being "new" in here, it's just polite to ask, even if you know that NL loves pleasing Nintendo.
And I say this with the firm conviction that Breath of the Wild is ridiculously overrated in general but I can't say a word about Metroid Samus Returns because I haven't played it, so I don't know yet if the score is fair or not. As a side note, I am a big Zelda and Metroid Prime fan.
Sooooo excited
NL always give first party games a point higher than they should, so this is really a 9/10, which is still awesome!
This review has ticked all the right boxes for me. Heck, there was even a passing mention of my favorite superhero! A new 2D entry has been way past due, and I can't wait to play it soon!
10? Ridicolous. Really. Pocket Gamer had a more honest review.
So my £300 is well spent then lol
Awesome review! Great to hear the 3D is good I love using the 3D. Just wondering how it runs on original 3DS'? Long live Metroid!!!!!!
Are you guys trying to make Nintendo Life's perfect scores as irrelevant as Famitsu's?
Don't get me wrong - I am undoubtedly going to play this, I just strongly doubt it is in the same league as Breath of the wild ...
Yeah I think I want to play this game. Hurry up Friday!
@Kalmaro Oh come on!! Support Metroid!
@JJ286 I will... On the Switch.
@scully1888 Can I ask you a question please? Were you asked to do this review for NintendoLife or did you submit it in the hope that they'd use it? I mean did NL choose your review from a number of others submitted? You may not know the answer to the last question.
@Kalmaro Samus Return ain't coming for the Switch. Seriously I see Samus in the vault alongside F-Zero, Mother, Ice Climbers and Kid Icarus.
@JJ286 That's a shame. Oh well, got another metroid game to support.
I'd rather see this on Switch than 3DS. I say that as someone who has the Special Edition ordered for the 3DS.
@JJ286 It could, poor sales could make them port it. Nintendo have ported end of generation games before onto the successor hardware. You need only look at BOTW.
@Anti-Matter
Sorry, but your comparisons are very poor. 2d metroids simply can't be compared to 2d marios etc.
Its like comparing Super Mario Galaxy with Metroid Prime, because both games are in 3D and have some platform sections. It just doesn't make any sense!
While Mario or Yoshi are your typical simple and classic jump and run platformer, with level design and so on, Metroid is a full blown run and gun adventure-platformer, with more in common with classic Zelda games, when it comes to exploration, progress and character development.
There are just so many great games on 3DS, so why stop playing on it, just because you got a Switch? I still use my 3DS a lot, because I care about the games, not the systems they are on. Everything else is just silly!
Awesome. I was already gonna pick this up, but this review made me even more hyped. Nintendo has had a great year thus far, and theres still plenty to come. Crazy.
Also, Metroid fans who own a 3DS should really pick this up. I understand you want a Switch version, but who's to say that's a guarantee? Furthermore, we've been wanting a new, good Metroid game for years but you're not going to support it?
"Castletroid" sounds like a disease one might catch from sitting on a public toilet seat...
Can't wait to play this, looks amazing! Go 3DS
@fbnaulin Maybe there was a difference in IP owner involvement? I mean if we look at Konami in recent times........on the other hand Nintendo is generally really protective of their IPs
Realistically I'm going to buy this and never play it.
Even allowing for the NL bonus on the score in any review of a first party game, it's clearly very good. Plus I want them to make more Metroid. But 2D isn't my favourite type of Metroid game and as it's on 3DS and I have backlogs on consoles I like more I won't play it. But I'm still going to support this.
Madness. Ah well, I look forward to selling it 'new and sealed' on eBay in a few years.
Uma Thurman and Arsene Wenger? Strange references for a review of a Nintendo game. (And was that a subtle dig at Arsenal's fortunes of late? )
Anyway, thanks for the great review. I suspected that this game was so much more than a straight remake, and I'm so glad to have that confirmed!
@dres Exactly. Just because I have a Switch doesn't mean I don't still use my 3DS a lot. There's too many great games on it to just replace it with the Switch.
I preordered the special edition. I'm looking forward to it!
I'm also looking forward to the speed runs and sequence breaks. This is a Metroid game, after all.
TAKE MY MONEY, NINTENDO (starts cramming cash into the 3DS hinge)
@Pupito Not sure what you mean by that comment, but I'm done with my 3ds. Right now it's Switch or no buy. Same for my WiiU. I enjoyed it to bits, but I've moved on.
If this were released a few years ago I'd have been so all over it. But since it's out now, it's gotta wait in line behind a bunch of other games.
Be interesting to see how this does. I'm not convinced enthusiasm on here will translate into big sales. A simultaneous release on 3DS and Switch would have made a lot of sense.
@gcunit I think you missed this part of the review mate, it's not really deep but I hope it helps clarify your doubts in that regard, at least from the reviewer's perspective:
"Not only are your eyes being treated here, your ears also get the VIP experience. The terrific soundtrack offers grandiose versions of the classic Metroid stings, while fans of Metroid II will be chuffed to hear modernised takes on many of the Game Boy entry’s often forgotten themes. The entire package, both in terms of sight and sound, makes for a gushing love letter to all things Metroid."
@electrolite77
Yup. Didn't have to cut 3DS out, but I think it was a mistake not having it available for Switch as well. Even with its strong first-year lineup, the Switch library still has plenty of room to go and a 2D Metroid to kick off the fall season would've been huge. I'm not ruling out this game being a pretty big sales success just yet though. It's been a long time and Nintendo has hyped this pretty good.
@Prizm
@roy130390 Good call. I would add that a 2017 remake of a black and white Game Boy game is almost like a new game entirely, specially sound and graphics. They respected the story but why would that be a bad thing for some people?
Seeing your profile picture, are you excited about this game? Which reminds me how much I would love to play a remake of Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, the best Wario game in my book.
" They respected the story but why would that be a bad thing for some people?"
@BlueOcean No idea mate. I suppose some people want a completely new experience even in terms of story but that would make this game fail as a remake from my perspective.
"Seeing your profile picture, are you excited about this game?"
I'm really excited! Super Metroid is my favourite game ever, and Samus is my favourite Nintendo character. I also always wanted a remake of this game, and while I loved AM2R and think the creator did an amazing job, I certainly believe that Nintendo and these developers will prove what they are capable of when having the resources and experience to deliver a unique experience that feels even more new and fresh in comparison to the original game and even the last GBA entries. I thought that we wouldn't see a Metroid game in a few years after the bad reception of Federation Force, so this was really unexpected and really made my entire gaming year fantastic just by itself.
I'm hyped. I didn't buy Fire Emblem Echoes because I'm pretty much done buying 3DS games, but I'll definitely make an exception for this.
I don't know why so many people are hung up on the review score. The word I'm hearing so far is that this is a damn good game. Kotaku had a very, very complimentary review of it. Does it matter if it's a 9 or a 10? A 9 is still usually a really, really good game.
And we get this now, and 3D, hi-def Metroid on Switch next year. It's a great combo.
@JasmineDragon
"I don't know why so many people are hung up on the review score. The word I'm hearing so far is that this is a damn good game. Kotaku had a very, very complimentary review of it. Does it matter if it's a 9 or a 10? A 9 is still usually a really, really good game."
This.
Why are so many people surprised this is getting rave reviews or has gotten a 10 from Chris ? This is Metroid we're talking about, one of the highest rated series in all of gaming, almost always featuring in top 10 lists everywhere, it's not that shocking lol
I knew the game would be awesome, cannot wait to play it myself, Metroid is back, hopefully for good this time !
@roy130390 Yep, missed it somehow. Knew I should have re-read it, but was sing other things. Thanks for pointing it out.
Holy crap, I forgot this was coming out this week!
Bring it to Switch! We've moved on, Nintendo. Such a confusing company.
Never got into the 3DS... Tried but not for me. Make it higher rez and put it on the Switch and got a buy.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Mate, please DM me on Twitter if you want me to explain the review process to you. I don't want to flood the comments with this, it's getting a wee bit silly now.
This needs a HD switch port. I dont own a 3DS but it looks like im going to ahve to soon.
@JaxonH I agree, people need to put their wallets where their mouths were the entire time while they were screaming for Metroid. Now it's the time to show support. If anything, disappointing sales will help to prevent a slighly possible Switch port. If anyone wants to play this game, they better buy it for 3DS or might never play it.
I personally don't believe in a Switch port either. How often did full-priced first party Nintendo dedicated handheld games with a physical release get ported to a home console of the same generation? I believe the chances of this happening to Samus Returns are barely existent.
@JasmineDragon "And we get this now, and 3D, hi-def Metroid on Switch next year. It's a great combo."
Not a chance in hell is Metroid Prime 4 releasing next year.
Swiiiiiiitchhhhh!
@Reignmaker Why confusing company? This game was in development way before the Switch launched at a time when nobody could possibily foresee the success the system is currently facing. The 3DS was what helped Nintendo to get through the tough times when the Wii U was loosing them lots of money and was very much alive when the Switch was released half a year ago. Unlike the Wii U dropping the 3DS immediately with the release of the Switch, would've been a very bad idea, because in case of bad Switch sales this high profile game on 3DS would've made Nintendo very precious money. Therefore it's very much understandable this is an exclusive 3DS game and not one for Switch.
Furthermore, the developer studio from Spain has other projects going on, so asking for an HD Switch port is not going to happen immediatly, if Nintendo is actually interested in doing that.
However, I think this entire discussion and the amount of people asking for a Switch port, clearly shows that the 3DS might just be Nintendos last dedicated handheld system and NIntendo can't support the Switch and a dedicated handheld system at the same time, because the Switch is competing successfully in the handheld market. Therefore two Nintendo hardware systems are currently competing against each other, which is not a very ideal situation and since the Switch is Nintendos future-plan the 3DS will most likely see the end of it's lifetime now after many very successfull years and it's questionable if Nintendo will follow with a new dedicated handheld system.
YAY! I never owned a NES, so I started playing the Metroid series from Metroid II (I mean, other than occasionally getting to play the original at a friend's house and getting horribly, horribly lost and frustrated). And I absolutely loved that game. I actually liked it more than Super Metroid (which I'm currently playing on my 3DS and being reminded how hard it is to control). And as much as I liked the Prime series and the GBA Metroids, it's always been Metroid II that I have the best memories of. Walking into a new room and spotting a Metroid, only to have it suddenly metamorphose into something huge and hideous and terrifying was an awesome experience I never really felt in the 2D Metroid games to follow. I'm so glad to hear that this game got such a glowing review, because even though it sounds like it's a much different beast than the original Metroid II, it also looks and sounds like it's going to be super fun.
I would suggest following this fella's own work. The man has great talent and passion in his video game write-ups. Not afraid to throw a curveball to popular opinion but always comes across as honest.
Great review.
@yoshinatsu
I fear the 10s will have little to do with it. All the 10s in the world don't help if the sales are still humble. How many of the greatest games in history were held in the highest regard by critics, but ultimately failed commercially? Can't blame a company for not continuing a series if they barely break even...
The same goes for a Switch port, I fear, though I can actually imagine two scenarios here: First one is "If it sells so good on 3DS, let's make a Switch port, too!", second one might be "Oh my, it failed miserably on 3DS (despite the good reviews), maybe it will do better on Switch...". In both scenarios it will also have to be determined how much it would probably cost to bring over, more so for scenario two, I would think...
I'm going to do my part either way. Have the special edition pre-ordered, though it's still uncertain if I'll get one. If not, the regular Cart it is.
Nice review and nice score. Good to hear that it also has a proper lenght!
"Some will consider this taking the easy way out, but the days of getting lost in labyrinthian 8-bit games are over"
But in your line of thinking they could have just removed all the secret areas? I personally love to find all those hidden areas. I think I only use the feature near the end of the game, when I struggle to find the last secrets. If I use it all the time, all the fun of the game gets sucked out for me!
I don't see how the aeion ability is any different than superbombing every room.
@Anti-Matter because the game is awesome
The review made no negative points, so how could less than a 10 be justified? And those comparing it to BotW getting a 10 are totally missing the point.
I think it's high time NL did take on Eurogamer's review system. People put way too much stock into the score itself, no matter how many times it's explained to them.
@Muddy_4_Ever
Yup, been my strat since 2005 when I skipped the HD Twins and just stuck with my PC(the HD master)/NDS/Wii. I generally enjoy Nintendo games and MMOs more anyway and for the past 7 years, lots of Japanese indie/3rd party games have been coming to PC so I've been quite content and will stick with this.
As for Metroid, it'll be the last retail game I get on my 3DS as its the only reason I'm keeping the console (that and the $700 worth of games/ambassador I bought digitally since Nintendo doesn't believe in proper cross platform stuff).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE That wasn't even the point. I shared a review where they gave a below the average score, and you answer something else.
Also, Triforce Heroes is considered a main Zelda by every fan Wiki out there, not an spin-off. Zeldawiki.org, Zelda Wikia and many others. Go tell them they are mislabeling the thing.
@the_shpydar Other M II: Pixel Hunting to be revealed later today at the Nintendo Direct.
Don't like all this questioning of the reviewer. If he says his opinion is that it's a 10, that's fair enough. Anyone who's ever freelanced, either writing about games or otherwise, will find the idea that he's somehow in Nintendo's pocket laughable.
Personally, when I've reviewed stuff in the past, I found a high score a pain because of the obvious pushback. You've got to go with your gut though, rather than try and water down the truth in case of moaning readers. Start doing that and your reviews will become meaningless.
I got this preordered, so can't wait to see what the fuss is all about. This is exactly the kind of Metroid game the franchise needed, and many fans, including me, preferred.
@Pupito IF people don't buy it, believe me it will get lock out on the vault. I'm buying it so I'm doing my part.
@Pupito I want to buy F force, maybe I'll once I complete Samus Returns.
Was going to get this regardless, but definitely getting this!! SOLD!
I am so fricking SICK of people moaning about it being on the 3DS. Get over it! The Switch is doing MORE than okay, its okay to have more than one console you know? And its not as if the 3DS has a half-baked library of games to dip into.
I don't care if its seven years old, its hands down the best handheld I have had. I love the 3D aspect so I am glad they stuck with that in this game. Bring out more 3DS games, I will buy them if they are worth getting - simples. Props to Nintendo!!!
Mine came in last night and it really is so so so very good. I can not over-emphasize how much you need to play this game with good headphones on. The soundtrack really helps pull you in to the atmosphere/setting.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Fair enough. In my enthusiasm "work in progress" sounds like "next year" to me. Probably unrealistic.
@roy130390 That's great. Good luck that we are getting not one but two Metroid games.
I'm still waiting for @scully1988 to answer me at least once about my simple technical question.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I say 2 -3 years
@pupito There's a lot left in this game so my opinion could change (for example, the original metroid 2 final boss was ridiculously cheap and I hope they improved on it, but I'm nowhere near that point) - but I appear to have been speaking out of my backside regarding the NLife 10% score inflation for this game.
It's good. Holy cow is it good. I've considered FE:Awakening the best 3DS game (even if it's not the best example of an FE game, I get that, I really do), but Samus Returns is making me reconsider.
I just purchased Metroid: Samus Returns. I did this on the first day to show my support for AM2R.
@scully1888 I had my doubts that old 3ds could deliver another great game. This review convinced me to give it a try and I'm glad it did. I hope some of the doubters can admit they were wrong to question the review.
Started the game despite willing to keep it as a left-over for later. Pretty good so far, even considering the fact it doesn't evocate Metroid II.
Not a fan of "the days of getting lost in labyrinthian 8-bit games are over and this new feature ensures you’ll never get so completely stuck that you’ll get annoyed with the game, chuck it to the side and never finish it." The original was an exploration game unlike this one, why would people be annoyed to be lost / stuck when it was supposed to be the game's "goal". Never being lost and always going forth would mean that there is a problem in its construction.
I've completed the game tonight, and it's a 9/10, good show Mercury Steam.
Can anyone help me here please? I need other people's opinions! https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/general_discussion/metroid_should_i_buy1
Still going to get this soon to be classic 3DS game (albeit digital version now), but cancelled my pre-order once I found out that the UK and not the US was getting the LEGACY EDITION. All the US got was a CD along with it cmon!
I'm going to voice an unpopular opinion (having completed this over the previous weekend); I would rate this 7/10 (or 7.5 perhaps).I feel there are some great new ideas, and certainly a lot of things are executed rather well. The music is fantastic, and length-wise the game is just right. However there are some important negatives that are glossed over also.
I'll start with the controls. This is one of those Nintendo games (similar to DKC Returns I think) where ONE set of (at times, inconvenient) controls is enforced. I get that the 360-directional aiming was an important feature, but there are times where the D-Pad would have been far more useful (including moments where morph ball is crucial for evasion), especially in some hectic battles were precise movement is more important than aiming. In theory, having so many options on the touch screen is a good idea, but when things become pretty hectic you're expected switch between equipment in a small time frame.
Another point here is the whole 'counter' move. Rather than being an optional technique, it feels like they built the game around it. Even basic enemies feel as though they've had their health increased (when attacked by regular beam shots) from other games, encouraging counter+one shot kill combos (as well as getting more energy back from counters). I actually see this as a negative since it puts too much emphasis on it.
Finally, I feel the enemy variety is a problem in this game. I don't want to spoil 'too much' (so I won't comment much on the bosses). What I will say though is that it feels like there is very little variation between regular enemies. In fact it feels like a lot of the time there are palette swaps of the same 3 or 4 enemies in most areas (a slight exaggeration perhaps though). This may be due to how the GB version was, but honestly it's really disappointing. I actually quite liked how other Metroid games could at times be more unique with certain enemies. Thinking back, there was repetition in other games like Super Metroid (both in functionality and appearance of enemies) but for some reason I noticed it a lot less. It really feels like the same enemies in pretty much every room.
Despite all that, it is still a pretty decent game, it's just that I disagree with it receiving the higher scored reviews that it has. I don't feel it was executed perfectly and the review didn't seem to acknowledge any short comings at all.
@DarkScythe13 As much as I loved this game, I actually agree with everything you said.
I'm a couple of hours in now. The fact that I'm not itching to get to playing it probably says enough.
It's a very good game, but it's not really a Metroid game. It's too easy, and the secrets are pretty much spoon fed to you. That alone sort of breaks the point, where it's supposed to be about survival and working out how you can survive long enough to get to the next checkpoint.
The controls feel harder than they should and the counter attack dominates the game at this stage.
It may highly appeal to a new generation of Metroid fans, but I'm definitely in the old school bracket. I need to die when I stuff up 😀
8/10 at this stage.
Finally got this. Absolutely loving it. I've been imagining a 2.5D Metroid with stereoscopic 3D from the moment I first held a 3DS. So far this game delivers on that promise. I'm amazed it took so long to come to fruition.
Just noticed Chris Scullion reviewed this! I'm a super big fan of him, been reading his game reviews ever since I was a wee lad reading the ONM :^)
Glad I read this. Will have to pick this up now. I haven't played 3DS in a while...
Going to amend my score to 7/10 now, probably 2/3rd through it. I have too much to say, won't rant on here (typing via phone).
I think this is a classic case of "bigger isn't always better". Still worth a buy for Metroid and platforming/shooting fans, but this is a very, very shallow Metroid.
I finished the game last night. I'll say that NL's score is still too high I think. HOWEVER, the game is so good though. My issues were that I thought it was starting to get a bit repetitive towards the end before the last major boss fights. And I also had some issues with hand cramping, and that's something that usually doesn't happen to me. That said, this game was terrific as a whole. It was great to relive the whole Metroid experience on a current console. I in particular loved the counter system, and that's something I want for future Metroid games. MercurySteam should be proud of what they put out, in such a relatively short time too.
