It's that time again, North American gamers, for Nintendo Download Update details to brighten your day and lighten your wallet. This week sees a collection of promising new download games across Wii U and 3DS, along with high quality retro options on both systems. Throw in a range of discounts and we have a good week ahead, so let's get to the details.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update earlier this week? Oh no! Actually, it's fine, the details are right here.
Wii U eShop
Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut (Curve Studios, $TBC) — A critically acclaimed horror experience from Jasper Byrne that's been extensively ported by Curve Studios, the "ultimate version" now arrives on Wii U. With a unique art style, this game's outcome is largely determined by your own approach: stealth or combat, rescue others or go alone, sanity or madness. This could be another terrific experience on the eShop, and we'll let you know what we think soon.
Ballpoint Universe: Infinite (Arachnid Games, $TBC) — This is a shooter with a bit of a difference, utilising a hand-drawn aesthetic to allow a customisable ship across 16 levels, with an Infinite mode also included. We'll blast through a review soon.
Paper Monsters Recut (Mobot Studios, $7.99) — A platformer with a paper-based mechanic that was previously on smart devices, this has had a graphical overhaul for Wii U in addition to the inclusion of an all-new overworld. We'll get crafty with a review, and in the meantime you can check out our recent interview with the developer.
Chests 'O Booty (Wildmane Studios, $1.99) — On the surface this looks like a match-3 game, though you also need to use some basic mental arithmetic to re-arrange chests of loot; we'll see whether this ship sinks or sails in our upcoming review.
PING 1.5+ (NAMI TENTOU MUSHI, $4.99) — With retro-styled visuals and a steep difficulty level, this is over 100 levels of trying to shoot a cube through over 100 increasingly tricky levels. We may need to remember our retro instincts and skills for this review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (Konami, $7.99) — The second Game Boy Advance entry in the trilogy, this one perhaps has a little graphical bump over its predecessor while serving up more of the series' action-exploration platforming; you play as the peculiarly named Juste Belmont trying to rescue a friend. They must be some friend to support that crazy name. We'll get cracking on a review.
Wii U DLC
Hyrule Warriors Master Quest Pack (Nintendo, $7.99 or $19.99 for a four-pack season pass) — This DLC pack contains the following.
- Five new Legend Mode scenarios
- A new Adventure Mode map (Master Quest) with seven new 8-bit weapons and sixteen new alternatively-coloured costumes as rewards
- A new weapon type for Link (Epona)
- Two new costumes (Guardian of Time for Lana and Cia)

3DS eShop
Pyramids 2 (Enjoy Gaming, $4.99 / $4.99CAD) — This game's predecessor was the first original (non-Virtual Console) title on the 3DS eShop, and this sequel arrives with 54 new levels across three worlds. There's also a level editor, and we'll see whether this is still essentially a modern take on Solomon's Key in our review.
The Legend of Dark Witch (Circle Entertainment, $3.99 / $4.39CAD) — A 2D action title with the familiar concept of new abilities earned by defeating bosses, though this goes further with additional abilities and items that can be collected and created. It looks full of colour and promise, so we'll see whether it delivers in our review.
3DS Virtual Console
Harvest Moon 2 (Natsume, $4.99 / $4.99CAD) — After the arrival of the first title earlier in the year, we now have the opportunity to jump into this sequel, also originally released on Game Boy Color. As is normal you're responsible for running a farm and returning it to its former glories; we'll milk this one for all its worth in our upcoming review.

No dinkey king?
No Donkey Kong. Damnit, Nintendo.
@jordanmarsden That's in Europe (and spread out over three weeks).
@jordanmarsden That's for Europe. Nintendo of America doesn't really do VC.
I can confirm that The Legend of Dark Witch is pretty good, especially for the price.
Where's Aria of Sorrow already?
Not bad. I'll definitely get Harmony of Dissonance and it's a perfect time to get SteamWorld Dig.
@Noonch I thought the same thing, but it's next week.
I hope we get some new home menu themes. I want those spinning themes.
Castlevania and Legend Of Dark Witch for me. Hyrule Warriors DLC is also a go. I thought Aria Of Sorrow was on tap for today, too. Did I read something wrong?
Anyways, Legend of Dark Witch, Master Reboot, and Harvest Moon 2 will all be mine by the end of the day.
Lots of nice choices but just the HW dlc for me. I have more then enough to play.
IGN said Lone Survivor was incredible. And maybe this is when I should finally try out Steamworld Dig...
Also disappointed that there is no DKC.
come on reasonably priced new games! #rubs hands in anticipation
hmm, i would have liked Donkey Kong Country but Castlevania is fine for now so long as we get Donkey Kong.... eventually.
@Stu13 Nintendolife (and IGN) both reported Harmony and Aria both come out today but I guess we'll see it next week? That's what they get for trusting Nintendo's official press release. http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=42100
Oh sweet. Squid Odyssey is on sale. Wanted to pick up both versions for a while, but didn't have enough funds available since it wasn't exactly high on my priority list with all of the other games coming out. >< So I'll be getting Harvest Moon 2, Legend of Dark Witch, Squid Odyssey (3DS/Wii U), HW DLC, and Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance this week.
This sucks
No DKC. I'm mad.
Why doesn't NOA love DK?
I love those GBA Castlevania games. I'm not 100% sure I'd want to see them on the big TV screen though. How pixelated is the upscale?
Chests 'O Booty - is that the new HW Cia DLC
Nice job getting this up early, it was about 2 hours later last week while all you guys were playing the Bayonetta 2 demo (jk, I know you guys always put it up ASAP)
sigh YET ANOTHER completely empty week. I've complained about the awful state of the VC on every single VC game Club Nintendo survey I fill out. Just goes to show you that Reggie doesn't actually care about what's in demand.
Meanwhile in Europe...
We are waiting for:
1. Castlevania Dracula X
2. Castlevania Circle of the Moon
3. Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance
4. Castlevania Aria of Sorrow
5. Megaman 7
6. Megaman X3
Edit:
7. Demon's Crest
@BensonUii It would be great if Nintendo just unified these two markets and release digital games at the same time. Maybe it's a licensing thing.
@Tsurii897 Nintendo keeps doing ridiculous things.
Last week why did you guys post that Aria of Sorrow would come out today?
Why don't we get DK games?
@BensonUii You mean Dracula X? We only have Rondo in the Wii Shop Channel. You guys do too.
No DKC for NA, that's so lame. The VC on WiiU sucks so hard, it hurts.
No Donkey Kong Country or Land? What a friggin' surprise! We probably won't see them until 2016 at the earliest, since Nintendo of America is more lazy than sloths.
When will NintendoLife issue a public apology for the Aria Of Sorrow controversy? Their silence speaks volumes while the masses are revolting.
Let the Castlevania and Natsume games clear out first. Then there will be room for DK. Heh, that said nice for nearly everyone to discount the VC games that is out now.
Dark Witch looks kinda legit, a gradius type platformer shooter, but knowing CIRCLE's reputation... gonna wait for reviews.
I'm going to get the Hyrule Warriors DLC and Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance and maybe Squids Odyssey though I'm not sure whether to get it for the Wii U or 3DS.
Hoping ballpoint universe & ping 1.5+ get good reviews they both look like interesting games.
WHERES DKC????
Great week. Interested in Lone Survivor, Ballpoint Universe, the Squids and Master Reboot discount on Wii U, I could go on.
@rjejr I thought that was Chests N' Booty actually
Good grief people. You want DK? Buy the WiiU game that came out this year. Cause so far about 1,000 people did. So NO DK FOR YOU!
ANYWAY, lots more good indy titles. Might have to pick up Squids Odyssey on either WiiU or 3DS. I remember it got good review. I need more time to play some games!
Since I have already pre paid for hyrule warriors dlc, nothing for me this week. I will be getting the gba castlevania once my backlog clears again. (Also holding out hope for some 20% off eshop cards around the holidays like last year.
Nothing for me...
I keep loading up the eShop every 5 minutes only to be disappointed Castlevania & Hyrule Warriors DLC hasn't been released yet!
@TwilightV
Yeah, thanks. I edited my original post.
@OneBagTravel
I think it has something to do with these ESRB, USK, PEGI thing. (Classification Board). Probably there are other reasons like localization and licensing as you said. And of course the market/customers.
@sinalefa - I just assumed it was a typo
@BensonUii
And we in North America are waiting for:
1. Donkey Kong Country
2. Fire Emblem
3. Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland
4. Pop'n TwinBee
5. Pop'n TwinBee: Rainbow Bell Adventures
6. Donkey Kong Country 2
7. Donkey Kong Country 3
Also, Demon crest is not on and doesn't have a release date for either region (talking about Wii U, 3DS doesn't matter to me so I don't know whats on there) and is scheduled for both.
Hmmm...
on the plus side, some very cool discounts.
But doesn't the PSN already have Pier Solar HD? We're getting that at some point... I think.
And in America, we're still waiting for the DS Virtual Console. Granted, we're still politely asking for N64 and Gamecube titles instead, but it would be nice to see what a DS title plays like on a Wii U.
Steamworld Dig is a pretty solid title, I'd recommend it on either platform.
Since us Europeans get our filthy paws on the primate's adventures I can sort of occupy myself enough not to cry about Castlevania's GBA absence.
Never heard about Demon's Crest before, that game looks boss.
Really hope they do a bundle deal with the Castlevania games.
@ikki5
Kirby is already coming on the 30th in NA. Also Demon's Crest and Gargoyle's Quest 2.

Hyrule Warriors DLC for me. And even if the DKC/DKL games come to the west, I wouldn't put a cent on them since I have the more superior DKCR on Wii. It's not to say they're bad, though. They were fun for the time, but I don't find myself having that same amount of fun that I once did if I buy them again.
No DKC games?! You're breaking my balls, Reggie!
I loved the first Pyramids, I'll give 2 a shot as well.
I figure we may see DKC & DKL over here once Halloween is over. At least in the US, Halloween and the horror theme/genre has taken over the market for the month of October.
ok ill get steamworld quit twisting my arm
Only one for me this time is the HW DLC. That will keep me plenty busy! Though it is sad to not see the DK games. I just don't understand NoA's logic... at least we should get them by next Spring or so perhaps.
Wow, neat. I think I have three new WiiU eShop games to buy after work. Cool!
Reggie and NOA continue to screw over Ninty's biggest market.
No wonder the system sales are sucking.
Ballpoint disappeared from map when i first saw it now it's suddenly out
this is actually a good week: lots of discounts, new indie games, dlc content, and a gba classic...and people are still "nothing this week" and complaining about the eshop?
i can understand waiting for reviews or disapointment in not getting your favorite retro game, but i can also see 3rd party developers reading comments and thinking..." nintendo owners dont buy 3rd party games".
of course, if people are mainly saying the VC needs to have more games than i would totally agree. still, maybe pick up one of the new or discounted eshop indie games instead.
@everyone going on about Castlevania - Aria of Sorrow was originally down for 16th October, not my fault Nintendo changed its mind!
Wait, PYRAMIDS 2 !!??
I had no idea this was being made. I really loved the original and will definitely buy this when it comes to Europe.
Papercraft actually looks pretty cool. Gonna need a demo to convince me it's actually worth buying, though.
Spinning menu themes; in the netherlands free !!!
@killer7 You shall live Sir.
@killer7 You shall live Sir.
@BaffleBlend Come on! The VC is actually improving! This has been actually a good month for WiiU's VC.
By the way, DKC looks absolutely STUNNING on the gamepad screen The TV picture is still a little pixelized, but doing ok. But on the gamepad... man the game is as gorgeous as I remenbered !
Really hope you guys in US catch this kong very quickly.
And we Europeans want Castlevania !
Wow! The eShop Servers are slow. Wonder what's going on. Maybe too many people trying to get the Hyrule Warriors DLC perhaps? I managed to buy Castlevania and its taking a really long time to download 85MB. Can't even get the eShop to load so I can queue up the Hyrule Warriors DLC.
Just more Hyrule Warriors fun for me!
Lone Survivor is amazing, I recommend everyone get it..
@ThomasBW84 Doesn't the DLC include the update with the 3 playable villian characters?
The Legend of the Dark Witch sounds great, but I want to wait for a review first.
@BensonUii
ok, so I missed that one. Probably because I never saw the post until you brought it up and it was posted after this. That is one off my list.
This is a rather good week, truth be told, with a grand total of four Wii U games I want to get at some point (starting with Paper Monsters). Still, I can't help but sigh immensely at the lack of Donkey Kong Country.
I guess I really shouldn't have expected differently from Nintendo of America.
might as well get season pass if you get hyrule warriors dlc
I don't see how anyone could complain about this week's downloads. Hyrule Warriors DLC, discounts on great games. I'm super pumped to go home tonight and start downloading.
It always perplexes me how US gets one great set of games (Castlevania) and EU gets another (DKC). Does anyone on NintendoLife have any inside information regarding this? Would love a good explanation why Nintendo does this since it just feels like a lot of sales missed in both regions.
I am more confused about the misuse of the word "lazy" here
Legend of Dark Witch certainly looks interesting. Like a Hybrid of Mega Man and Ghouls & Ghosts. I hope it's good.
Man what a good week. I'll wait for reviews of some of the indie titles and if they end up well I guess I'll pick a few this week. And maybe I'll get EO IV if the price is right, we'll see.
@ThomasBW84 I swear one of these days I will make a meme of Nintendo Lifes Download Week's phrase "Lets get to it", lol.
nothing but trash yet again
Ah haven't missed the endless complaining on this site. I for one am very happy about Harvest Moon 2! And Steamworld Dig on sale? Very nice! Great week for me
I wish they'd release the GBA and DS Castlevania games on 3DS also. I have PoR and OoE but I'd buy the other DS game and to be able to play the GBA ones would be cool since the screen of my Micro is... well...micro.
Trine 2 and Harmony of Dissonance.
Master Reboot for me. Been waiting on a price drop. Gotta rack up those Deluxe Digital Promotion points before the expiration date.
@BensonUii
You Europeans are getting some nice stuff there yourselves, DKC for example.
If I get a points card, it'll be for ShantaeAtPC next week. Or I'll get DuckTales.
What is with you people?! If I had the money I would be getting three or four games on the eshop this week. Live up to the Nintendo gamer stereotype of not liking anything but Nintendo.
I gotten The Legend of Dark Witch, it's a great game!
oh that discount on squids is calling my name!
A good handful of new indie games and some of the best indie games are on sale and you guys STILL say there's nothing because of 1 VC game?
got The Legend of Dark Witch its like megaman but for little girls... sigh
Great week, there is a ton of stuff!
Not sure if it's really a game but technically, the first non retro game was PokeDex 3D.
And then, not sure if it's original but there was Let's Golf 3D.
Then Pyramids
I'm going to wait on a review of legend of the Dark Witch. I caught a real nice game last week with Samurai Battle Heroes and with Fantasy Life releasing a week from tomorrow I'm going to have a lot to play. Also Atlus I love you guys! You put on sales it seems every month. I have all your games except Conception 2. I'm holding out till its 19.99 but your sales are awesome!
The lone survivor and ball point university infinite this week! Been waiting for these two!
the old pyramids had a level editor too, it was called download the editor tool and generate "hacked" qr codes
I got Guacamelee this morning and Squids Odyssey this afternoon. I'd call that a pretty good day.
When does the Master Reboot sale start?
yarn Still waiting for my most anticipated 3DS title, Gunman Clive 2.
So many great choices this week. I'll have to wait for a site called nintendolife.com (you may have heard of it) to tell me what to get.
FANTASY LIFE USA NEXT WEEK!!!
Paper Monsters Recut definitely is not worth picking up. It honestly looked like it could be fun but the level design is terrible -_-
I'll wait for a review of Lone Survivor. I see Master Reboot and Trine 2 have hit a sale... don't know when I'll play them but I feel like scooping them up.
I just checked the Eshop and it doesn't show Master Reboot on sale, is this some kind of glitch? Or is it just me?
@midnafanboy You and me, friend, are kindred souls. Those are the same games I purchased today!
@MeloMan No need to wait for a review, I can tell you firsthand this game is amazing - I love the feeling of exploring the complex, aimless all but for a vague goal - it's really thrilling, honestly, I'm enjoying every second of it.
Hey NL, I'm not seeing Master Reboot discounted on the eShop...
@MrWalkieTalkie Exactly. It doesn't matter how packed the week is (and this is a great week!) some will never be pleased.
Does anyone exactly what time they update the eshop when a game is released the following day at midnight on the east coast
Man, those sales!
I hope you guys on the fence check out Squids Odyssey and Master Reboot now.
Squids Odyssey is very similar to Fire Emblem, and Master Reboot is a very atmospheric psycho adventure.
@ghasfarost Only if you like Castlevania. I always found the series very generic and boring, personally, so this is going to be a LONG wait for me.
In the meantime, I'm still waiting for Fire Emblem and Game & Watch Gallery 3, which are already out in Europe...
I picked up steamworld dig, paper cut monsters( enjoying that), and ballpoint uni which looks cool! Eshop is getting better but still not up to snuff with vc games although I'm blown away reading that 3 vc games due in the 30!!! That's how it should be EACH WEEK NINTENDO!!!
Hopped on to the eshop yesterday prior to coming here, and wow this is a pretty good week for what look to be quality game releases.
Purchased Ballpoint Universe, Ping 1.5, and considering Paper cut monsters and Chests o booty (about to check some reviews on it). Lone survivor looks interesting, though not really my style of game. All are quite well priced too
Anyone know what the discount is on Etrian Odyssey?
@XCWarrior
Agreed brother nobody bought that game and it's good...
I have a massage back catalog already and most of them are either VC or eshop games... Where do gamers find the time?
So when are they going to start releasing DS games to Wii U? I would love to partake in my favorite Castlevania games instead of the GBA entries.
Dragon Quest IX would be nice, too.
@arrmixer Truly a mystery. I'm playing almost 2 many games at the same time, so I make super slow progress on all of them. I get some done, but I really should learn to focus better. Backlog is a mess, yeah.
@XCWarrior
Lol .. Yeah I try that technique and failed I just play one at a time and just wait till the summer when I have more time
