To the surprise of absolutely no one, a 'Buy physical' option has popped up on the Nintendo Switch page for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Although, if you're not a fan of ports, you'd best look away because Nintendo is slapping a full price sticker on a four-year-old Wii U port with an extra character and an easy mode.
Well, we knew Nintendo was probably going to charge $59.99 for a first-party published title - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had a $60 sticker on it at launch, and that was a mere three years after the original came out on Wii U. There's no option to buy a physical version for the EU or the UK, so it's just our American chums coughing up for the privilege of a box and a cart at the moment.
Will you be picking up this port when it launches on 4th May? Or is the Wii U version good enough? Leave a comment below...

sighs...
Gasp.
That is a bit of a pisstake to be honest unless there is a lot more to this port that they haven't revealed yet.
Was there ever any doubt?!
Let's take a $50 Wii U game, add something nobody asked for and charge $60 on the Switch. People will just think of it like $10 dlc...
Never played this on the Wii U so I will definitely be picking it up for the Switch. Just not sure if I will get it at launch or wait a couple months for it to be cheap to buy used.
The wiiu version is 20 bucks here in America. This is so crappy.
We already knew that. Late in the afternoon the same day as the direct I pre-ordered it from BestBuy..
Cue all the hate and complaints. Personally I don't mind. I am completely okay with ports and think this is worthy of the price. Though I doubt I will pick it up right at launch, but I probably will get it. Remember the Wii U didn't sell exactly well and a LOT of people never owned it or this game. There are plenty of Wii U titles I'd love to see ported and feel they are a perfectly reasonable thing to use to fill the wait time between major new releases.
This game was hard as nails. Some of those temple levels were controller smashingly hard.......yet I couldn’t even do that as the game pad couldn’t be replaced. I’d go to smash it and then lay it softly onto a cushion instead. They even denied me that.
I'm fine with that...
And this is surprising/'news' how...?
Let’s all say it together ‘many people have a Switch that have never even seen a Wii U’
So for most people this game has never existed before.
Worth it.
Funky Kong tax
Watch them get away with it.
I was about to be that guy and say "This is news?", but then I read that it's not coming to EU/UK. That's unfortunate.
I plan to get this or my birthday. I skipped it on Wii U; won't make that mistake again after reading about how darn good it is.
"There's no option to buy a physical version for the EU or the UK, so it's just our American chums coughing up for the privilege of a box and a cart at the moment."
Wait! What?
That surely can't be right.
I see it up for preorder at every single online shop I'm looking at, both in the UK and Benelux. :-/
I think it’s unbelievable this game will cost more now than it did when it released nearly half a decade ago.
@Mr_Pepperami I don't know about you, but I'd pay $10 per game to have a New Funky Mode in all of my games ever.
According to the Nintendo Power Podcast, NoA has a "New Funky Mode" button in the office where the just slap it and it adds Funky to any game. The used Dark Souls as an example.
I can wait.
I've just been playing Tropical Freeze on my WiiU recently. So, I definitely won't be picking it up again. Especially for full price. Maybe when it's $20.
Still buying it.
Not to get into politics but the big corporate tax cuts that passed recently should result in a bit of discount in price for the consumers.
Planning to pass on this. There are plenty of cheaper platformers on the Switch that more than hold their own.
Didn't the 3DS port of Returns have an extra bonus world, in addition to "easy mode"? You think that'll happen here?
@MH4 I’d def pay 10 pounds for a funk mode as well but only in the most inappropriate games. Maybe resident evil or outlast. A funked up link would also be amazing. Funky Kong simply isn’t funky enough
This is a great game but I need more than one character to even consider buying it again (unlike Hyrule warriors which has more content than the wii u version).
For anybody that has a switch and never played this on wii u, give it a try. It's a great game.
Hard pass. I paid $20 for the classic edition on the WiiU
Have to say it’s being advertised on pretty much all uk sites as a physical uk edition so not sure this is correct.
@BinaryFragger I might even be able to stomach a $50 port, considering that’s what the game cost originally. But to charge more for it several years later while adding next to no additional content is just shameless gouging at its finest.
DKCTF is an absolute masterpiece and anyone who hasn't experienced it yet should buy it.
Man, I was hoping for $40 but thought it was likely going to be $50. Surprised they went with a full 59.99 price. Guess will pre-order deals it will be under $50 anyways. Wish they’d give those discounts with digital pre-orders too.
Yeah, I'm calling BS on the game not being released as a physical version in Europe. No idea where that came from.
It says so even on the official Nintendo site that the game will be released physically: https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch/Donkey-Kong-Country-Tropical-Freeze-1325706.html#gameDetails
@Mr_Pepperami Rocket League - New Funky Mode!
Skyrim - New Funky Mode!
Mario Kart Wii - New Funk-- waiiit
Is it worth 60$ for people who havnt played it yet?
Yeah... No.
Call it the switch tax if you will, having a game cost $10 more for it being game cartridge. But I planned on buying this anyway. I have Gamers Club Unlocked so I was only going to pay $48 anyway. Still looking forward to this.
@Sharks
Absolutely. It's one of the finest 2D platformers ever created.
And I'm not saying this lightly.
While I love this game to death, I can't see myself spending $60 on a game I've played to near completion. The additions are minimal. So far the only Wii U port I've gotten is MK8 and that was mainly due to the online battle mode revamp. Played it over 100 hours on Wii U and 100 + more on Switch.
To those who haven't played it a ton: This game is fantastic. Highly recommended.
@Grawlog
I pre-ordered from Best Buy, finally came to my senses and joined their Gamer's Club. The fact is, it's very easy to spend under $60 on new games these days so I don't know why everybody's in a panic over this.
seriously nintendo? its going to be 4 years old this year.
No thanks. It's a great game but it gets tiring when they release old games for full price like this when there's also very little added. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was sorta worth it with the revamped Battle Mode but not this. I might pick it up when it goes on a good sale or something....
@Gamer83
Yup. GCU is fantastic, the folks that are always complaining about expensive games, overpriced Nintendo games, or whatever need to sign up to BB's program.
As a WiiU owner I understand the frustration but the system failed so miserably. Nintendo has to almost pretend that these are new games. I won't buy it but I did double dip on MK8.....damn you Nintendo!!!!
Please... I know people are hating on ports but Wind Waker port on switch!!! And twilight princess
Both GAME and ShopTo have carts up in U.K, only Amazon that doesn’t but, oh, wait, you get paid to plug Amazon so nope carts for the U.K don’t exist 😏
@thesilverbrick @BinaryFragger Or it could be, you know, the result of the operation of supply and demand on a product sold by a multi-billion yen transnational corporation whose primary obligation is to its shareholders. But probably not. It's probably what you guys say.
I suppose this is a smart move, though I’m not crazy about it. DKCR sold like 6 million copies and DKTR sold less than 2 million I think. Adding the easy mode and Funky Kong will make the game much more accessible so I wouldn’t be surprised if it did better than the WiiU version.
Booo.
Unfortunately I couldn’t get into the recent DK games like I did back in the SNES games back in the day. I passed on it on Wii U and I’ll have to pass on it for Switch.
Someone on here actually told me that Sony and Microsoft just want your money and nintendo doesn't. That person must have been hallucinating, because I think all 3 companies want your money, which is why nintendo is showing their pig-side too. Absolutely no reason for it to be this high in price...could be $40, but it shows that nintendo is wanting more money for it since the Wii U's flopped days. Anyways, I'll take the original 3 donkey kong country games over the newest ones, but would rather have a brand new donkey kong game instead on the Switch.
@Proust
Portable Wii U ??
Did you use Portable Power supply to Turn On your Wii U ??
I own this on Wii U and it's not worth it for me to buy again on physical partly because it never really hooked me and I didn't like the old school death punishment - I guess I have no time for that anymore?
Anyway, other people love this game and might double-dip. Other people will decide this is too much for physical, but want the portability, so they'll buy digital. Others will be content to wait for a sale or buy it second hand.
In the end, I wonder if the cartridge is a bit on the large side maybe? Or more likely, this is just one of those games that has a great reputation and missed a big base of potential buyers because it was on a system they wouldn't commit to buying. So, it's priced at the value they are willing to buy it at.
The thing about this game is that it might be "old" but there is literally nothing that would make it better than it is if released on the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X or top end PC. It's not "dated" except by its overall structure but that didn't change in a couple years.
Bringing up that it is $20 for Wii U is quite useless for people who don't own a Wii U. It might as well be $120 and more space and hassle for another console they didn't really want. Not a great proposition when they could drop $60 and have it on the console they are currently using — and isn't it $20 for Wii U somewhere because nobody is buying it for that console anymore?
@JimmySpades Of course the reason is to take in as much cash as possible. That’s the sole purpose of corporations. Nintendo seems to be the one of the only major developers that is perfectly content rereleasing a four year old game and charging more for them now than they did when it first released. They have every right to do so, obviously, but it reeks of gouging. I admire your naivety and your belief that Nintendo is a charity that always does what’s best for the customer and couldn’t ever possibly take advantage of anyone...
And I never gave a reason for the price. I simply commented that it was higher than when it launched on Wii U years ago. No need to be condescending.
Got mine on Wii U for $20 about 2 years ago. I won't be picking this up at $60.
Owning a Wii U has its perks.
Never had it. Gonna pay it.
shrugs
You sure about no EU/UK physical version? I already preordered a physical version shortly after the January Direct.
@Winklebottom Did you know it was getting a retail release priced at $60? No? Ok.
Is anyone really surprised by this?
I preordered this on Amazon US soon after the direct. With Prime (20% off price) and my amazon credit card (5% cashback) and never having played this and being able to take it around the house or lunchbreak at the workplace portably...great value to me. Oh and 60 gold coins to save 60 cents off my next digital purchase cause why not.
I’ll be getting it but not at that price. No doubt amazon will have it for less
Hyrule Warriors is still around €50, new and upgraded variant will be €60 on Switch.
Mario Kart 8 is still around €45/€50, Switch version is €55/€60 and includes DLC.
You know what is the issue here? On Wii U DK is a €25 select title, I would accept €30, maybe even €35 but €60 is overpriced compared to Wii U.
Even worse, Switch version is almost same as Wii U.
I will buy this masterpiece twice on Switch. One digital copy and one physical. And I owned it on Wii U.
@Grumblevolcano
https://www.play-asia.com/donkey-kong-country-tropical-freeze/13/70btk1
Europe version confirmed.
4 May 2018.
Still tempted to upgrade. I’ve got a little bit of time to decide though.
What a lull. A DK port, Mario Tennis, a Kirby game that might be able to play itself...hate to complain because individually each of these games could be great. But the lineup seems lackluster. I hope the rumor about there being a Direct tomorrow is true (see Switchforce's latest YouTube video). Could use a few more titles coming my way.
@Winklebottom Price wasn't officially announced at that point. Amazon was just taking a guess. It was a reasonable expectation for this game to be $50 because that was the launch price for the Wii U version.
Never played it so I'll have to buy it with this price. Point is, I'm buying digital so idk the digital price and if it different from the retail price...
@thesilverbrick So you never gave a reason for the price? Let's see exactly what you said. I'll copy and paste it so I can't be accused of misrepresenting your words:
"But to charge more for it several years later while adding next to no additional content is just shameless gouging at its finest."
That looks like a reason given to me. Here's my reason: demand goes up, price goes up. It's the exact same phenomenon as when prices fall because gamers are waiting for a sale. You can't expect price to only move in one direction.
Please tell me this is only for physical copies. No way they can justify charging more for a port.
@Yoshi fair enough, i'll remove what i said earlier.
anyways.
i think i'll go with the Wii U version(unless there more to this port) as it currently more cheaper.
@Sharks Yes, the platforming in this game is absolutely great, the art style rocks and the music by David Wise is simply amazing! If you're looking to collect all the puzzle pieces than this game is very challenging, otherwise i's a good level of challenge. Highly recommend it. I myself will double dip on this game, but not right now, I'm in no rush to 100% the game again. haha
@shonenjump86
The games are beautiful but I don't like the way the movement/jumping feels. Same for the old ones.
Great game, but I’m not sure if I can come up with $60 for it again. Actually I only paid $50 I think it was on release day on Wii U.
I hope there are one or two little tweaks made to the game. Add more tunes to the unlockable soundtrack since you can only listen to four for some reason, and maybe use "Bramble Blast" in Bramble Scramble.
I mean..... I’m not very happy about the $60 tag.... but I did buy the Wii U version for ... $18? Or something like that and never got to finish it given the state of Wii U. So now I’ll get to finish it finally which is cool. I’d much rather this be $50 or even $40. But given that I paid so little for the original and now I have to pay full price for this it’s not TOO bad... really hope there’s some kind of graphical update (believe me it doesn’t need it but why the heck not at this point) too and some other hidden extras because paying this much for a mere direct port is robbery.
@JHDK nintendo games becoming cheap is mostly a myth.
Is..is this news?
Absolutely appalling. Not worth my money in a thousand years for so little added into a game I already paid full price ($80 CAD) for
Barely played it on Wii U, as I prefer my platformers on handhelds, but the price tag makes this a hard sell. I'll probably just hold off on a price drop.
The New Funky Mode must be "quite" the addition if it's $60
As long as all the contents are on the cart then I had no problem with it, I plan to replace my Wii U version with this new one anyways.
It should have included DKCReturns.
Yah I’ve had mine preordered at this price for months
Yeah while I was willing to double dip, 60 is far too much for this game. Especially that the initial release can be had for 20. Unless the added far more than just Funky mode there is no reason it should be full price.
Ah well, such is life.
Don't really care what they charge, I'm not going to double dip on this game. Was too hard for my liking on Wii U.
Meanwhile, you can still get a Selects copy for $30, or get it + Returns for $50.
That’s just ridiculous. Not to mention they didn’t add any significant amount of new content to it (besides a playable Funky Kong) to justify the full price.
No surprise about the price. I won't buy it unless it gets a deep discount at some point. I never did play it on Wii U.
Nintendo sucks ALOT half the time.
Wow. The Wii U version cost $50 at launch, too. MK8D had a ton of extra content, but this has almost nothing added. $40 tops.
Hopefully this port will be 1080p
An amazing platformer that was worth every penny I paid for it on Wii U but I think the only 2d platformer that could get away with an even steeper $60.price tag is Mario Maker or a new 2d adventure. DKTF flopped even by Wii U standards so releasing it again 4 years later with no improvement other than easy mode for a tenner extra seems like flawed logic to me.
This is a really bad article... :/
On Nintendo's official site, there is still no price listed. It's still not confirmed. It's the retailers that have it set at the $59.99 price point.
NOE's site doesn't have a "buy physical" link because the game's not out for 2 months.
Oh the greed of Nintendo- unbelievable! Game should be $40 tops!
Greed by nintendo but let's face it ya complaining about it being full price but if gta5 dropped on switch with full 59.99 price ya would all buy it and justify the price lol
Damn at least do a discount for Wii U owners that bought the game or something
Im in.
@JimmySpades Supply and demand have never affected console game costs in the past. A game like Mario Odyssey was always destined to sell more than something like, say, ARMS, for example. Yet they both launched at the same price.
It’s a fairly understood thing that software doesn’t maintain a high price years after its initial release, and it’s even more ridiculous to expect a four year old game to increase in price with next to zero new content. Relatively insignificant development resources went into porting this game and Nintendo would make a solid profit selling this game at $50 like they did in 2014. They’re artificially inflating the price because they can. It’s called gouging. If you can’t see that, then that’s fine. You can continue to believe Nintendo does everything it can to save you money and would never overcharge you for anything.
@thesilverbrick What about what I've written would make you think I believe Nintendo wants to save anyone money? What about what I've written would make you think I believe any corporation can maximize revenue by overcharging? You are making assumptions not supported by any of my words, which undermines any argument you make.
Not that you didn't also do that when you wrote "Supply and demand have never affected console game costs in the past." Yes they have. Any time you claim the fundamental principles of the economy don't apply to an economic market you're just wrong.
Is this game substantially similar to the SNES games? I never cared for those, wondering if enough has changed to check out the series again.
No problem paying more for physical copies. Keep them coming!
"so it's just our American chums coughing up for the privilege of a box and a cart at the moment."
Factually incorrect. Do your research NintendoLife
The Switch cart for this will be available at EB Games Australia.
https://www.ebgames.com.au/nintendo-switch-231768-Donkey-Kong-Tropical-Freeze-Switch
@SanderEvers
Yeah this article is so poorly researched. It's available in NL and Australia and who knows where alse also.
@Sforzando
That's the understatement of the year.
Too bad Nintendo didn't include an HD upres of the original.
$60 is steep.
@JimmySpades I guess I’m not exactly sure what you’re getting at, then. I’m simply arguing that Nintendo is charging more for this game than is necessary to make a tidy profit. Taking a game released four years ago and simply porting it to a modern console with minimal additions and charging $10 more than it cost at launch last generation is without precedent in the gaming industry, at least as far as I can see. How is that not gouging? And if you agree it is gouging, then why were you so condescending and combative with your original post? I really don’t have time to waste on people that just want to be unkind. There’s already too much of that going around.
I would have considered buying it at $40, $50 tops, but $60? No thanks.
@Joekun It's a moderate-difficult 2D platformer, where you can collect KONG letters, and puzzle pieces.
I never cared for the original games either, but DKCR and DKCTF are fantastic.
I don't understand hasn't this all been known for a while now?
I'm getting seriously tired of this [removed] about full price. You have been [removed] about if for a full year now. Either accept it or sell your switch. It will not change, every game that they will release on the platform will be full price.
Seriously, let it go. Getting tired of this broken record and the horse aint getting any deader.
@thesilverbrick First of all, it's not gouging, and accordingly I don't agree it's gouging, so assuming I agree that it's gouging but just feel like being combative is absurd. Second of all, assuming I just want to be unkind is, well, unkind, so I suppose you don't have much time for yourself.
Amazing game! My wife and I had a lot of fun playing Co-op on the Wii U. But since I've already paid $60 for it and beat it, I'll probably wait to see if it'll go on sale.
How is this news exactly. Also I don't think its fair to say Nintendo is being greedy here considering we don't know how much the port actually cost plus the fact that to the majority of people who never bought a wii u it will be practically a whole new game
If you think it's worth the price, go right ahead. If not, wait for a price drop.
Personally i rather wait for a discount and buy something else in the meantime, maybe if they included DK Returns. At least Bayonetta 2 includes the first game.
This really makes me appreciate getting it free on Club Nintendo, instead of $80 CAD or something...
This is a great game and I probably would've missed out on it otherwise.
It's a big and top notch game, we get it, but Nintendo is really getting too greedy by charging full price for older games. Titles like this one should cost €30,- and no more.
Nintendo never gives up selling the same games over and over and over again.
I don’t get the issue here. If you didn’t have a WiiU, it’s a new game at full price. If you have a WiiU, you already have it or can buy it cheaper. As I never owned a WiiU, I see these rereleases as a favor, not a cause to complain.
Definitely picking my favourite platformer of all time up again.
I got this free on WiiU through Club Nintendo.
$60 seems crazy for this game.
Nintendo is really starting to look out of touch or money grubbing with these switch remakes.
Regarding the game, I still think it is very uneven, I didn't really enjoy it personally. I'm a much bigger fan of the Wii game.
Will wait for a 50% sale. I have plenty of other stuff to play in the meantime.
I still have this on wii u so pass obviously same as Bayonetta. It is a great game though if you can get pass the difficulty which with easy mode should work. I got it as a birthday present from a friend which was cool considerin how bad that day ended up
@BinaryFragger I just base it off if the game is worth it to me. Skyrim is worth $60. Donkey Kong is not worth it to me.
Considering this is a straight up re-release with very little added content this is a ridiculous pricepoint.
I even though Mario Kart 8: Deluxe was a bit much at $60, and that game added a LOT more content than this does.
I will not be buying this. In my opinion they should have re-made the first game as well and re-released both in this package. But even then $60 sound like a lot for two old games.
Can’t wait for this game! A classic on the Wii U and getting a second life on the Switch!
@thesilverbrick I would agree that it's gouging if it was a nessecity for living but we all know video games are not. It's fine not to like, agree or just be flat out pissed about it. Let's just not use terms that are not accurate.
Will buy day 1. I'm clearly in a minority that I don't have a problem with the price. To be honest, I don't get the "game is old, it should be cheap" narrative. Do we expect to buy a copy of Dark Side of the Moon at 75% off because it is old?
I don't know why they didn't port both DK games and release a double pack for the price of one game
This is going to my black friday wishlist.
I’m one of those lucky Wii u owners who owns it
This has been listed as a pre order for £49.99 on Argos for about 2 months how is this news good game tho but seriously tough it is great if you never owned the Wii u version
There will be a retail version in Europe. I can buy it in most online stores in Switzerland, Germany, UK, France, ...
I heard Dark Souls is going to be at the $40 price point, which seems like a far more reasonable price for a port. I bet that'll be a huge success for them. I'm thinking of picking it up too, since I've never played a game in that series.
Slow news day...
Not sure why this is a surprise considering it was never stated to be Digital Only... plus in the UK Game have physical cases on the shelves to ‘pre-order’ so no one is surprised it’s getting a physical release...
@Dev I've taken my Wii U gamepad from its living room home up to my bedroom with no issues whatsoever.
As for portability it's a non issue for me as I only game at home, so as much as I love my Switch there is no way I'm paying full price for a game that I can easily pick up for well under half that price
No surprise for me either. As the writer said, it already happened with Mario Kart 8. People keep complaining because they think Nintendo's target with this game are users that already had it on Wii U, but it makes no sense.
They make ports because Wii U sold poorly and they want to sell more copies, thus the target are newcomers, so full price has 100% sense.
Which doesn't mean I like it. I have this game on Wii U still sealed and was on hold, but if they confirm the only difference will be Funky Kong (and it being bonded to an easy mode only), I'll stop trying to sell Wii U version and will play it eventually.
There's a plethora of 2D platformers for $10 now thanks to the indie boom. If they think I'm going to pay $60 for one they must have gone bananas.
Have already seen this game being advertised online much cheaper than this. If you shop around you should be able to avoid paying full price on day one.
I honestly don't see the problem.
@Proust well for about five feet. 😂
I wouldn’t double dip, but I might upgrade at the right price. This ain’t the right price though. Not for something I’ve already paid full price for and 100%d (SPOILER ALERT, though as with all DKC games, 100% ain’t actually 100%...)
Won’t be buying in UK unless it gets a physical release. Can’t resist games on cart
Didn't buy Wii u, won't buy Switch. I'm not drawn to DK games like other stuff for some reason. Maybe I'll eBay the Wii U/3ds one. Or just VC the SNES ones on Wii u.
Honestly if the EU wasnt getting a physical release I wouldnt be stunned.
Did we expect anything less?!
Lets face it: Apart of the indie barrage the first half of 2018 looks VERY bleak. Ports, potentially weak Kirby, potentially average Mario Tennis. Yoshi doesn't hit before June.
Metroid and the upcoming Retro title (is that still a thing?) better be REALLY good. At the moment Nintendo is leisurely cruising on the sea, not a care in the world. Why would they, all the indies and ports keep the boat afloat. Even better, Switch is still a smash-hit...
Never had a Wii U, love DK, and don't care. It's new to me. I am part of the problem.
I don't know why everyone complains about ports. You don't have to play it if you don't want to. Although it is a tad overpriced.
I will buy it day one because I never had a Wii U and I love DKCR and tough 2D platformers in general. Also, David Wise is back for the soundtrack and it is phenomenal.
Fantastic game, and for ppl who haven’t bought it on WiiU the price is actually ok, it’s a solid Nintendo quality title. I myself won’t go for full whack again though, too many other games that are new to me. I get that it won’t happen but a sort of WiiU loyalty discount for all these ports might’ve tipped the scale as I own almost every one announced or released.
@Banemus Mind the language.
@Henmii Exactly. I'm getting annoyed at how in the dark we are about first party releases. Give us something on the horizon to look forward to! I know I want Yoshi and I want MP4 but other than that there's nothing. I'll just have to get a bunch of Nindies to tide me over.
@meppi64 same here, I preordered it months ago on Amazon.it, and it's definitely an EU release since I can see the PEGI label...
Had it on WiiU. I'll wait for a pricecut or discount.
This is pure greed for a old game as it were a low priced game on Wii U.
I'm glad i have it on Wii U.
I had it on Wii U, and it's an absolutely fantastic game - no question. But when Sony / Bluepoint can completely rebuild a game (Shadow of the Colossus) and charge £25 for it, it makes this look like a pretty poor effort.
Let's hope people are consistent in their response here. We've all seen the whining when third-parties do this even though they're converting more recent games (Doom) or doing more work on improving older games (Skyrim). It wouldn't be right to see Nintendo getting excused for the same.
Betting that this game will make it to the first round of Nintendo Selects for Switch — I’ll pass until it’s $20
The game can be pre-ordered in lots of UK stores. £49 seems to be the RRP but can be had for £45, thegamecollection.net.
Prices do vary in the UK so having a tantrum on what the US is charging is daft, and if you pay RRP when cheaper options are available then you've only got yourself to blame.
That being said, I can see why Nintendo prices their own published games at the highest level, they value their AAA games regardless of age, but ports shouldn't be priced as the same as new releases. If new games RRP at £49 then ports should be no more than £39.
Never had it for the wiiu so not that upset with this news
Not sure which makes me feel more queasy; people sticking up for a mega corporation charging full Triple A new game prices for a four year old WiiU port or the concept of double/triple dipping still being trendy. For that one special game, I get it. Seriously, widen your gaming experiences people.
@Shellcore A lot of people bought TLOU twice...companies do it because it works.
Hell Square Enix HD Remastered the HD Remaster of FFX a year after it came out. There is a market for this stuff.
Nintendo should've priced it 99.99 when I read these dumb butt comments here.
For me it's new
But it isn't. It's an old game and not an amazing one either. Quite boring and uninspired compared to other full priced games... From years ago.
That's why it was always discounted on Wii U. I wonder which game is next. Probably that lame Toad game
Seeing as people are both running white knight and witch hunt perspectives here already, I'll start out with stating this: I am consistent in my response, as this has been my general opinion at all times:
I'm fine with them selling it for full price. Had it been a port like Skyrim I'd be miffed, because Skyrim was widely available to the general public for ages. This game, like all other Wii U games, was locked behind the greatest failure of a home console I've ever heard of. It hitting Switch might as well be its first debut.
That being said, I won't be buying it at full price. It's a game I'm interested in playing at some point, but I've got a huge backlog to go through, so I'll grab it at a sale sometime. Maybe use some of those cough cough saved up gold coins of mine in around 12 months.
TL;DR full price tag on normal ports is bad, anything coming from Wii U exclusivity is fine, because Wii U was a colossal failure and barely anybody bought it + its games.
Bonus tidbit: My special game is Dark Souls, and I'll be dipping for the fourth time in May. PS3, PC x2 (don't ask), and finally Switch. Also, the DOOM port on Switch is a work of effing art, so I'm breaking my consistensy here to tell you to pay whatever price they want for it. Rip my reputation.
@YummyHappyPills More fool them. Whilst people buy this tripe, there is less impetus to make new experiences.
@Shellcore Define new experiences. At this point in human society all games arr based on rules establishing success and failure conditions from the times of ancient civilisation XD
But in terms of new video games...eh. they made em. They failed. Resell em.
On that note have I ever mentioned how I never found DK to be remotely enjoyable? XD
This is a day 1 buy no matter What the price is 😋 Cant wait!
I was hoping to get this, but let's not kid ourselves, this pricing is shocking. When you can get classics like Crash Bandicoot and Shadow of the Colussus that had significantly more work done on them for half the price, something's not right here. But Nintendo have always been mental with their prices. £40 for Mario Tennis Ultra Smash anyone? Oh, and gutted this isn't, getting a physical release in the UK.
"There's no option to buy a physical version for the EU or the UK, so it's just our American chums coughing up for the privilege of a box and a cart at the moment."

Unless I am mis-interpreting the article, there is many places to buy in the UK/EU. Those are just the sites I use often
Nope.
Can’t believe people are trying to justify this... .
Hope people vote with their wallet.
Dont see the problem
I want developers to spend time porting games a new console. I want the games to look great and I want there to be some new stuff. I want it to be a physical release cause I'm more interested in owning the game than playing it.
... but I don't want to spend money on it.
Am I really making any sense ?
@FTL That' some weird logic. Old is old and it doesn't matter how many that have played it.
We've known this for months. I've been saying it's a disgrace but Nintendo have no shame, just look at all the other Wii U ports. They've done nothing bar add Funky Kong which makes the game easier and the game is less than €20 new on Wii U. The only way to stop rip-off's like this happening is for people not to buy them. I own it on Wii U, paid full price at launch, there's not a chance in hell I'll pay another €60.
Argos have a physical edition listed in the UK.
http://www.argos.co.uk/product/8037697
@Meei Firstly - It’s a fun game, so I’m happy to pay full price for it - but to reply to your comment specifically, the reason things reduce in price in the retail world is that as items sell, there remains less people who are interested in buying the product. In this way, the longer an item is for sale, the more the price reduces - If they reached a very small audience to start with (on the Wii U), launching it again to a larger audience makes sense to reset it to a normal retail price (makes sense for the manufacturer that is)... and for me I’m willing to pay it.
Plus, for a completely different perspective, just foe the fun of it, if they re- released a 1956 Corvette that I can buy new, would you expect it to be $500? of course it wouldn’t, It would be to a new audience and would obviously still sell for the current going rate of a new car even though all the design work was done 60 years ago.. popularity and new audience.
BUT none of that matters.. all that matters is, are there enough people who haven’t played it? yes? then it’s new to them and then Nintendo will be able to get them to pay full price.
I’d like to say that I’m not gonna pick this up because I already have it...but this game is why I bought my Wii u so I probably will 😂
@Reignmaker but aren’t as good 🤪
Pretty sure the Wii U version cost me £35 in Smyths. Finished it entirely and enjoyed it. I'may not fussed about getting it again howevery, and I would argue $60/£50 is too much for any 2D platformer, let alone a 4 year old port.
Not that the port heavy lineup for early 2018 matters to me that much, still have Skyrim, LA Noire, Disgaea, Golf Story, FE Warriors, MH Stories, Okami and my free Portal Bridge Constructor (gold coins) to play through.
@Folkloner I think it’s the new guy🤔
@Tibob lol
£34.99 its a buy £59.99 and it stays on the shelf.
I found this a bit tough at points to be fun, maybe I need to try the easy mode... Or not at that price.
Yeah, no.
Bloody he Nintendo milk it why don't you thank god I pre-ordered from Game
I don't get the news. I've preordered my physical version on Amazon France a month ago 🤔
Nintendo's appreciation of the Switch being a success, they can now charge more for the games.
Disappointed but not surprised. It is the best way to have maximum profits though for an established series. First get maximum returns from those willing to pay at launch and then scoop up the rest once the price drops.
Using UK prices say it launches at £40 (yeah it’ll be more in some shops but we have enough people in the know that they can get it for this online at launch). Say only 25% of those who buy it get it at launch. Then 50% get it during the £30 price drop later on and finally the last 25% at £20. A highly simplified model but in the long run will result in higher returns than launching at £30 to gather 75% of buyers and missing out on the extra £10 per purchase from those first 25%.
Like its Wii U predecessor I may wait although I think I preordered it at approx £40 just in case. Depends on disposable income on release.
sigh People don't understand Retail,Business, Marketing.
How much did you end up paying for a physical copy of Splatoon 2 or MK8DX on Amazon?
This article is a bit pointless. . .
Given that I haven't bought it on Wii U for £20 I doubt I'd buy it on Switch even if it was £20.
Unfair price in any meaning of the term. But as a DK fan that never played TF I shall buy it anyway. This game almost cost me 300$ WiiU. So 60$ is now tolerable for me. Tolerable but unfair.
@cfgk24 MK8 Wii U and MK8DX are currently exactly the same price on Amazon UK, so that's not a great comparison.
shakes my heid with lack on board storage and the price of this of a wii u port is a shocker. Just pull my trousers down and bend me over nintendo why dont you
Nintendo are using the Switch is their cash cow. So far 2018 is looking poor for new Nintendo games.
Not surprising
@cfgk24
Whats not to understand? Dark souls comes at a very low price - why cant dk?
My online retailer has it listed for 50 eur. Cant say Im tempted.
It's well worth this price.
Still worth $60, especially for those who never played. I have owned it and beaten it on Wii U and while it would be nice to have a discounted price, I'm still buying.
@JHDK
It is a really nice and colorful game on Wii U. Difficult though. This is prob why there's "easy mode" now. If you haven't played it, I recommend it.
£40 at Tesco. Kimishima should step down although ultimately this is all Reggie's fault.
I never played it, may pick it up at some point, I was hoping it would get the Bayonetta treatment as a surprise, and if you but it, you would get a download code for DK Returns from the Wii.
@Dom Are you certain the physical copy won't be available in the UK and EU? Where did you get that info? Even the official Nintendo website mentions retail copies.
Just wondering...
@RetroGamerAndrew I got it preordered at Base since the direct it was show in.
It's really shoddy reporting to put something like that in.
I wonder how many research (if any) even went into it.
And what surprises me even more is how it's still up like that without correction. :-/
Not a single news outlet or site has mentioned a digital only EU change, heck even on the official Nintendo site it still says it's being released on cartridge, yet somehow it ends up on here without anything to back it up.
How does that even happen?
Speak with your wallet, people. If you don’t want to pay such a high price for Switch games, then stop buying ‘em. And at $100 in Australia, I ain’t touching this at all
@meppi64 There is a reason why NL is usually on such lists involving Kotaku and Polygon
Hasn't this been known for a couple months now? I'm pretty sure they also had retail versions for Europe.
@Ogbert @chardir @full_metal_opera It's £42 for MK8 on Amazon uk - Retail price is £49.99 on eshop. My point being is that you don't have to pay the Full MRRP. That was my point - you misunderstood?
In regard to Pricing - DKCTF is a Nintendo Selects on Wii U at £19.99 - you have a choice to buy it at that price on disc or DL for Wii U.
On Cartridge, for SWITCH with some Extra Content. The retail price is £59.99 ( I can't find an Amazon uk price for this) but Amazon will probably sell it at £49.99 on release ( please tell me if I'm wrong - I don't have a crystal ball here).
DKCTF for SWITCH is for people who haven't played it /don't own a wii U . If Nintendo start releasing First party Top Quality Games with new content at a cheap price - 2 things happen. 1 - It sets a precedent and customers then expect all games to be that price. 2. Nintendo get less money - If Nintendo get less money - there is less incentive and budget to develop incredible quality games.
So - really - the best way to help your hobby/gaming lifestyle is to support your favourite system that you love by buying Download. Nintendo make the most profit and that helps us Nintendo gamers more than most people know.
I thought Ogbert was correct btw It is totally an incredible game worth that price. .
@Menchi187
Let's just hope they don't start posting such brilliant "research" such a this.
;P
@cfgk24 "That was my point - you misunderstood?"
I didn't read any of your comments and wasn't replying to you, not sure why I'm being copied in here?
[edit] I just read that comment. I get it now ^_^
@Madelleste I said 'at the moment' just because there isn't the option just yet, but I'm sure there will be at some point
@Dom Alright, fair enough.
The thing about Mario Kart was that it included all the DLC, as well as a new battle mode, so the price seemed worth it. As far as I can tell, this just has an easy mode slapped onto it.
For me it’s a new game, so full price for it is not an issue.
Those who already own the game on Wii U don’t need to buy it again. This game obviously wasn’t made for you. Just ignore it.
I’m perfectly fine with Wii U ports. There is a wealth of great games that very few people got to enjoy. Now it’s the chance to give all those games a second chance on the Switch.
I don't have a wii u anymore. so I will be buying the game regardless.
This is not a drama.
At least in my case:
I have Mario Kart 8 for Wii U.
I've bought Mario Kart 8 Deluxe because I still play it online and want to play it anywhere.
I have Splatoon for Wii U, but wanted to play Splatoon online anywhere, online (c'mon, the most important part of the game is the same... few improvements and a new mode).
But then...
Bayonetta 1/2: I finished this game in all different modes. Not gonna play again, don't need to play it "on the go".
Donkey Kong TF: Again, just finished this with 100% (or 200%), but I know that I'm not willing to play it all over again.
That's it.
Why we are crying? As Wii U supporters we wish we could play the whole library we bought for Wii U in the new portable system, but that's all.
Online game will have appeal for us.
Bayonetta, DK, One Piece UWR, Hyrule Warriors, Pokken, if they were played in Wii U, they are games just for collectors.
Of course, Nintendo wants to charge these ports as a full price game... but it worked very very well with Mario Kart 8.
I wasn't terribly interested, but even if I was there's no way I'd pay full price for a re-release. None. Greedy move, Nintendo.
Bummer. I'm sure it's worth $60 but was hoping for cheaper. I'm more likely to pick up a bunch of other great 2D platformers first now — like Rayman Legends, Celeste, Steamworld Dig 2, Shovel Knight, maybe The End Is Nigh. Can't help but feel like Nintendo's shooting themselves in the foot a bit with this.
The Wii U version is good enough, but if you only have a Switch, go ahead, it's a great game. The only question is why Nintendo's ports are so expensive? For this price you get a remastered trilogy on Xbox One and PS4.
I will definitely celebrate the release of the Switch port by playing through the Wii U version again!
NOPE! I'm certainly interesting in playing this (having never done so on Wii U), but that's too pricey. I'll hold off, I have plenty to keep me going!
@Dom Without being rude to your efforts in writing articles, I have to say that I am not fond of your work.
On this particular article I have to say, present both facts, the bad ones and the good ones, and then let ME, the reader, decide what's good. Don't "guide" me directly that €60 is bad for me. You are a journalist. Don't forget that.
Why re-iterate the fact DKC TF 2 as new news that its getting a retail Switch release, even if its RRP. Just another cheap nasty clickbait article.
Will be picking up on Switch as never played on Wii U, even if its another lazy port and in defence of this hastily cash grab of an article.
What is this rubbish article? There will be a physical release in Europe.
I can understand Nintendo treating these all as new games as many switch owners never bothered with the Wii U so to lots of people these Wii U ports are new unplayed games.
What I am disappointed in is that this is sold for a higher original RRP than the Wii U version. Nintendo are being very cheeky here for sure.
I’ll never understand why people complain at an RRP. There are in fact very few retailers who actually sell the products at this price - Amazon are a prime example. It’ll wager that it’s £37.99 by release day.
@Ogbert lol. Sorry. I waffled..😊
I got mine for free on the WiiU for purchasing The Wind Waker or a Nintendo reward that was actually worth it. I do not recall, but it was free. I will probably get it because my family loves it and so do I.
@Heavyarms55 Couldn't agree more. The Wii U was the only Nintendo system I didn't get so why shouldn't they charge full price for a game so many people have never gotten to play? Making a game in house like this one takes so much creative input, time and money so bringing it to a new successful system is to be admired, not mocked by the masses, including this site it seems.
Just like every port Nintendo has ever released ever.
Not surprised, but I'll definitely be giving it a hard pass. I've said it before, but I really don't understand this pricing for ports. Not from a consumer perspective mind you (Which, of course that sucks) but from a business perspective. At $50-$60, I'm only going to buy my absolute favorites again - for me, that is Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. The rest I passed on. If they would drop these down to $30 or maybe $40 (Even that is pushing it) I likely would purchase 10 when they came out - MK8, Smash, Pokken, Bayonnetta, Bayonnetta 2, DKC:TF, Captain Toad, Mario Maker, Hyrule Warriors, Rayman, etc... Maybe I'm in the minority.
@Cosats Each to their own. Thanks for reading though
Hahaha
This was a good wake up laugh
nuevo modo funky!
@MarinaKat hahaha I actually hadnt had that feeling for many years but oh boy did that game bring it out. In the end part of me hated that game but I got through it......and then sold the game as I never wanted to see it again😂
Nope. Funky Kong isn't funky enough for me to double dip at that price.
It was never going to not get a physical release, and it was never going to not be $60, and it was never going to not be ported to Switch after the relative failure of the Wii U version compared to the Wii remake. I love the original DKC games and Returns, but after 10 years of 2D sidescroller after 2D sidescroller, I have no interest. Happy for those who wanted it though
" There's no option to buy a physical version for the EU or the UK, so it's just our American chums coughing up for the privilege of a box and a cart at the moment."
What are you talking about? I'm in the UK and I've just searched online for 'Donkey Kong Tropical Jungle Switch" and come up with preorders for a physical copy of the game at Tesco, Game, Smyths and more. Did anyone other than you actually think Nintendo were gonna go Digital Only on this?
I already played this on the WiiU so I won't be picking it up again, but it is a great game - far better than DKC Returns - so anyone who hadn't previously played it is in for a treat. And like I commented under your MyNintendo soapbox yesterday, you do know that nobody pays RRP for Physical games, right?
Wait,, so it won't get a physical release in Europe?
Not that I want to buy it, I'm perfectly fine with my Wii U copy, but still... I would've picked it up in 5 years for 10 euros as a portable version.
@MH4 Complete Works of William Shakespeare- New Funky Mode
Thought this was already well known and common info. I've already paid off my preorder at gamestop when it was first announced. This comment section is a dumpster fire but I for one am very excited to play this in May!
@JimmySpades Then this is where we agree to disagree. You apparently believe Nintendo must charge $60 for a four year old game to turn a profit and isn’t unnecessarily overinflating the price, even though the exact same game retailed for ten dollars less when it launched originally. Seeing as the game’s development finished years ago and this is essentially a straight port with next to no development costs, I can’t say I agree with you. After the cost of the physical media and the tiny bit of development, this game is pure profit. But there’s no convincing you, and that’s fine. I don’t need you to agree with me.
And you honestly don’t see anything condescending or sarcastic in your original post?
@zionich One if the dictionary definitions of the word gouge is simply “to overcharge”. There is nothing inherent in the definition about the item or service in question being a necessity.
The only double dip I have done is with Mario Kart 8, but I didn't get the DLC for that so the purchase was somewhat justified. IF they release Smash with all the dlc I will probably double dip that. But this.....this is just dumb. Didn't this game release for $50 when it first came out??? Ridiculous overcharging! I loved this game on my Wii U, but it's not worth $60 on Switch.
@thesilverbrick Overcharge based on what though. Value is subjective.
I look at it as it has no value to me at $60.
@zionich Sure, but seeing as Nintendo itself valued this title at an MSRP of $50 four years ago after years of development, charging $10 more for a simple port four years later is out-of-the-ordinary, to say the absolute least.
I'm glad there is Switch version coming out. We may get a bit higher settings and maybe less load times. Now lets hope they will bring other WII U games so we can forget that system! lol
I'm not going to complain about the cost, I'm just not going to double dip much like I did not on Mario Kart.
@thesilverbrick I agree that it's not wise and doesn't make sense. I guess we will see what the majority thinks 😁
I always see this argument about Apple products when it comes to whether a customer is being gouged or not. Apple doesn't force anyone to buy their products. No one is being hoodwinked. Same with gaming (and in this case, Nintendo products). A value and perception has been placed on products deemed premium. You're either gonna confirm it or disapprove it by talking with your wallet.
@zionich The reality is that the game will still sell like crazy. There will be no real lasting consequences for Nintendo over-inflating the cost of this game, emboldening them to release more old games and charge a premium for them, despite industry trends being altogether different. Honestly, I plan on buying it myself, but since I will get 20% off by pre-ordering through Amazon, it won’t be that big of a deal. All in all, I’m glad play the game on Switch. It was one of my absolute favorites and I’m hoping it will find a larger audience this time, leading to a possible new installment. I just think it’s kind of discouraging to see Nintendo charging more for a four-year-old game now than when it released originally.
Full price? I don't think so! Thanks to the new Club Nintendo rewards program I'll be able to get a sweet $2 off with the points I've saved up over the last 2+ years.
@mioraps
"Is this news?"
Yes.
This game was one of my top 5 games on the Wii U. I loved it! I didn't stop playing it until I saw credits rolling and I had 100% completion.
However, I strongly doubt I will spend $60 to buy this again. If you never played this and you're a fan of tough platforming, this is a must own.
glad i have it on wii u...
I will wait for price drop.
For some reason I would had been annoyed if it was at a discounted price. It's that the game was so good it was such a shame it was only for the Wii U. People who had never played this game before want a discount for it, as if the game is not as a good because it's older. For those who already bought it for the Wii U, you really do not have to buy it again.
@kobashi100 Aren't Switch games more expensive than Wii U games, due to Switch games being on game cards?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE So you would had bought a game you already had if it was $30?
@cfgk24
Ok! I cant help but notice some corporate identity here. No offense - thats fine with me - different opinions make the world less boring and more colorful.
In regard to buying download and supporting a company, I dont really know what to say. I like physical games - only buy digital when there is no physical and when there is a bargain on it. Physical games are day one mostly.
Supporting a company means identifying with it - yes, I do like many of their games and franchises but I dont like their attitude.
I do own DK for wii u same as mk8. I bought mk8dx but will not buy this one.
@j-life
And yet dark souls comes at a cheap price
@Heavyarms55: I agree. While I'm not sure at this point in time if Tropical Freeze even with the extras is worth $60 (that judgment will be reserved for when it releases), it's definitely worth more than the $20 that Ninty is currently charging for the Wii U Selects version. I have the original release, and IMO it was worth it at the full price.
@thesilverbrick That's the thing, I would be a big hypocrite to bash Tropical Freeze when I happily paid a premium price for Skyrim, Doom, Mario Kart and will for Dark Souls, Diablo 3 Skyward Sword (if those happen).
Should Nintendo charge the premium prices for old ports, my answer is yes because people will buy it. I won't see the value in a case by case basis but I still agree with the decision. It would take a vast majority to reject that price point for it to change.
@full_metal_opera I'm not familiar with that game, since I don't play much, but is that not a multi platform game? Do you understand the difference between a game that didn't sell because it was on a system that didn't sell, and the difference in demand for such games?
If the Wii U had sold 9 times more than it did, and the pressure from people who hadn't played Tropical Freeze was not there, then if it would had been ported to the Switch, then it would be cheaper. As a business it would be STUPID for Nintendo to not charge full price.
@zionich I just have a hard time with paying MORE now for a game that was $10 less four years ago. With the examples you cited, you pay the same $60 as when the games launched (not to mention most of those examples have seen significant upgrades in their re-releases, unlike Tropical Freeze). To pay more now is just hard to swallow. A $50 port would seem at least slightly more fair. And sure, Nintendo has every right to charge whatever they want. I just don’t particularly like it.
@full_metal_opera Lol , no offence taken - there is no Corporate identity here I know - there is a huge Joy to owning physical copies- In my early days of gaming - I would trade in finished or games that I didn't like - Now? - Yes! I do like to own Special Editions of games and even some imports as a result - I own far too many amiibos ( lol ).
I do wish , however , that Download increases - it does give nintendo more money to play with - and this is important with games like Xenoblade C2 for example - which didn't sell 2 million( I don't think) but has high development costs - It's obviously a fantastic game - To get an XBC3 - the company looks at the profit made. . .
I also dread to think monetisation methods that the other consoles get - coming to SWITCH. I sold my PS4 and XBone as a result of that . ( I take my hat off to CAPCOM for not following the micro transaction route with MHWorld) - I won't be touching EA , GEARS, Any loot crate nonsense etc. We know all the First Party Ninty games Wii U underperformed because of lack of units out there. I'm happy to see the ports - I expect no-one will end up paying $60 for physical for DK though
@MH4 well it's on my wishlist since a couple of weeks and I'm in europe, so this statement by nintendolife is complete BS
https://www.amazon.de/Donkey-Kong-Country-Tropical-Freeze/dp/B07913DTK3/
@thesilverbrick It feels gross on principle to charge $60 for this...but, I never played it. Most people haven't played it, and there's this idea in the industry, with fans, that if something costs less than 60 it isn't premium. 50 meanders, if it's 40 it's budget. When I saw Sonic Forces at 40 bucks I immediately didn't want the game, so maybe I'm to blame for this pricing too. Maybe this is a way, with all Nintendo 1st party releases, to position the IP stronger in the eyes of those who don't pay attention to when this was originally released. This is $60, this is serious business. Personally, ON PRINCIPLE, I'm hoping there is some surprise content added here, cuz I feel a little dirty preordering this (but with my GCU it's only 48).
@thesilverbrick That's a fair point.
Don't get me wrong, I asbolutely ADORE Tropical Freeze and its one of my favourite 2D platformers of all time..
... But this is just silly.
I was going to ask why is this news, but I guess people who have been wanting a physical port have noticed the button being gone.
Nintendo missed a trick here. They should have priced it at $75. I believe fanboys will not complain about this price. Milking fanboys is a business, nothing wrong with that. Apple does it, others do it, why not Nintendo?
Release it on the next console as well in a few years time for even more money.
Seriously though, DK is not Mario Kart. I can see a Bayonetta2 like result.
As someone who did not own a Wii U I am all for the Wii U ports, but this is pushing the limit of a $59.99 price tag. Every other Wii U port had some sort of extra content that was substantial in some way. Mario Kart 8 had extra characters and a new battle mode. Pokken Tournament had a new character as well as the unreleased Arcade characters and new DLC to top it off. Bayonetta 1+2 was sold a reasonable price to begin with and has exclusive Nintendo Costumes, Hyrule Warriors is going to contain Wii U and 3DS content as well as tweaks and improvements to the overall game. Donkey Kong is giving us an EASY mode as an incentive to buy again (1st time for me, but once I saw what we were getting I thought for sure it would at most retail for $50). I may wait to see if I can get it on sale.
@BravelyDavid I totally agree. I never played it myself, but there are other switch games I'd rather pay the full 60 for.
Nintendo isn't releasing this game for double dipping Wii U fans. It's releasing this game for those that never played it or owned it before.
Note: The game flopped on a failure of a console. It's not as if the game made its money back in the first place
Buy a $60 Switch port for a game I bought on the Wii U for $20? (the Nintendo Selects print. That's the point I'm getting it, if it was already released as a budget game on its original console, why not a budget price here?)
@jaronimoe Funkey, or not funkey, that is the question.
Foresooth, thine funkey joke hath brought upon a smile on mine face.
@Muddy_4_Ever Looks like NL went to Olive Garden and got unlimited BS (breadsticks).
This is just retailers pricing it at $60, right? I didn't see anywhere on Nintendo's own site that it would be $60 (they've set no price yet, not even for digital like they did with Kirby), and retailers are known for putting placeholders on things they don't know the price for but want to get going on pre-orders. From a business point of view, it's logical to set the placeholder at typical MSRP because if it's lower, they can simply reduce the price and no one will fuss. If they were to make a guess and price it lower for pre-orders when it's supposed to be more, they'll either end up honoring the lower price (Amazon at the very least would because of pre-order price guarantee) which would either reduce their profits or cause them to lose them, or they might lose customers for forcing an increase in price.
"¡NUEVO MODO FUNKY!"

I don't see a price tag on Nintendo's official website.
Wii U version is more than enough.
Greatest platformer ever
Who would buy physical with what they did to that box art, though?
I feel like this is all news we already knew and it's all just a way for the author of the article to put his 2 cents and and drum up controversy in the comments section. Mission accomplished on both counts by the way.
I might spend that much on a few 2D levels in 1995, not so much now.
@MH4: "According to the Nintendo Power Podcast, NoA has a "New Funky Mode" button in the office where the just slap it and it adds Funky to any game. The used Dark Souls as an example."
Super bummed this years old title I bought on Wii U when it was new for 50 has actually gotten more expensive over time. Still, if you're an Amazon Prime member, it's got a nice pre-order price.
Yeah, it's a bit stteped but what really puts me down is how Nintendo treats it's 2D platformers. That genre is where their truly legacy resides and they keep cornering it. Uninspired 2D Marios or bland Yoshi games. This is one of the best games on Wii U. It desserves a global retail release and I'm reading that it's not coming to EU. I hope is just they haven't announced yet and where getting the physical release dates soon.
Firstly I'm ok with this as I was with all the other ports!
Tho I'm happy to pay a lot more for monster hunter ports....
The bottom line here is, who buys from Nintendo sites? It's gonna be £39 on Amazon or another retailer.
I get the feeling that a 3ds and Wii u Vc is just gonna come to us as ports.
I just hope they think about porting some Wii titles as I'd love to have pandoras tower and the last story!
@Curlynob totally agree. It's all about shopping smart!
@Lord Totally agree, I Loved The Last Story & Pandoras Tower, I wish there would be a sequel especially for The Last Story.
edit: I will still get DK though
Never played it, I played a bit of the original Donkey Kong Country and Country Returns, but I don't pick this for 60 bucks sorry
So this is what Switch's year 2 looks like.
No EU release?
Come on, Nintendo, don't pull a Capcom on this one for f***'s sake please.
Fantastic game. I won't be double dipping (bought it day one on wiiu) but I highly recommend it.
This ain't news, it's just D I S S A P O I N T M E N T
Although, I've never played Tropical Freeze, so maybe?
I'm sure they'll put an "easy mode" to Dark Souls as well, just to ruin the entire idea.
I already preordered it. This is old news.
