cyrus_zuo commented on New Heroes of Ruin Trailer Heads into Battle:

I expect this will review poorly as reviewers will spend the great majority of their time playing single-player, which I can't imagine is much of an experience.
I'd love for a review outlet to prove me wrong though.
A game like this shouldn't be reviewed by a person, but a panel, of 4 people, who all played the game together for 10-15 hours.

Day 1!
I didn't get Mutant Mudds b/c I had a lot of trouble with the disappearing platforms in the demo. I found them frustrating (they missed the Mario feel unfortunately). Otherwise I really enjoyed that demo, the style and visuals.
I love racing games and wanted to check out the original ATV on DS, $9.99 sound perfect here, I'm glad they are doing it (and wish it 8-player racing...this won't replace our weekly Mario Karting with 4 players!).

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: Rush Rush Rally Racing (WiiWare):

Just picked up TNT Racers last week, and it's been good multiplayer fun (though light on tracks).
This looks g-r-e-a-t, and I plan on getting it day1 in the US! (please come to the US)
Good games deserve support, and being on WiiWare instead of the 3DS eShop, I think the developers are not likely to see a return on all their hard work :(.
We need more people buying WiiWare games, especially the good ones!

I'd love to know more about multiplayer (since that is how I usually play). Definitely sounds fun :).

cyrus_zuo commented on First Impressions: Art of Balance TOUCH! (3DS ...:

Loved the demo!
Bought the game and love went to like to total frustration. I'd say the controls broke the game, but I really blame the design. Since it was wonderful at first, then became too hard to play due to the controls it points to the design not taking into account how hard it is to get accuracy with a Wiimote pointer.
I have to say I'm not excited for this at all. I really wish the design of Shin'en games matched the visual quality. Their games look amazing, and often play 'ok' at best. If the game design came to match the visual design they'd be the best 3P developer in the downloadable Nintendo shops.

I'm hoping for co-op.
Is that crazy?
I find it really strange that there will be a NSMB for 3DS and one for WiiU apparently months apart? That does seem like overkill to me.

...yet it leaves me to wonder. Will there be some cross-platform coolness that we'll find out about at E3?

cyrus_zuo commented on Kore Gang Publisher Needs Your Money for a Re-...:

I'm on the fence.
To the point of needing and deserving our support - I tend to think that any game developer who puts their heart and soul into a project for years deserves my support.
Then again I am a game developer, so it hits close to home.
I love that they did their own thing. However, the reviews point out issues that will likely be game killers for me.
Then again, if they don't hit their goal (and I can't imagine they will) it's no money out of the bank.
If they do hit their goal, it's $15 to get a game I may hate, but it supports the efforts of people who put their everything into a game (which always leads to me at least loving some part of the game).

I think in the end I'll do the $15, and not expect them to be funded, but $15 is little to pay to support people following their dreams. I think we need more game developers doing that. It sometimes lands flat, but if people who put their dreams and souls into games aren't supported, then long-term all we'll have are yearly updates of the same game we've been playing for years with little imagination or heart to be found.

cyrus_zuo commented on The U.S. Sales Results are in for Nintendo:

I've so far passed on Kid Icarus myself b/c of the control schemes. I've played it at shows, and while it looks great, the controls are a struggle for me (notably I also gave up on MP:Hunters before getting through the first stage and I've not completed either of the Zelda's on the DS).

I do plan on getting KI, but I think the price will drop quickly and by Christmas I'll be able to get it for $15-20. I don't expect I'll love it then, it will still have control issues, but it will not cost as much so in the end I'll probably be satisfied. Controls are a big deal! I think it was a misstep in KI not to fix them (and addressing them with a stand only shows Nintendo knew there was a problem, but didn't know how to fix it).

I love my 3DS, but I think the stumble on Kid Icarus puts Nintendo in a really bad place with the 3DS for the next 4-6 months unless E3 really surprises. Mario Tennis is looking like it might be a surprise winner, but it is still a smaller franchise. There isn't another 'big' title (like Mario 3D Land, Zelda, or Mario Kart) on the schedule at present. The eShop has had great stuff, but again, I don't know of anything coming over the next few months. It's looking like we're stepping into a bit of a dry spell.
Still, I just got Xenoblade, and I'm looking forward to Heroes of Ruin (come on June 26th!), so I'll be busy playing, I just think Nintendo is going to struggle here for a bit.

Far more interested in the 3DS version than the WiiWare version. Pointer controlled overhead shooting like this doesn't really work for me (Geometry Wars was a great example). If you can't dual-analog, you should just use 8-way firing (on 3DS). Using stylus would be a mistake.
++ For being Co-op, especially on 3DS!

Online is the key here...
Online Tournaments - should be happening, organized by Nintendo
Online ranking and laddering are a basic minimum.
I played the game at the GDC and really enjoyed the feel of it, but it will come down to how good the multiplayer options are online.
If they are great, I'll probably get it.
If they are simple ranking and random matches I'll pass.
This is a great opportunity for Nintendo to really push the online options :).

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: Mario Party 9 (Wii):

I was a big fan of 8, in large part b/c of the boards. I really like the hotel investing one. It gave the game a bit of a monopoly feel. We haven't played it much since we got WiiParty though.

I am concerned about a couple things I've heard about in reviews. I've read that being in the car together makes it so you can't apply powerups to anyone except the person ahead of you, and that whoever gets into the lead stays in the lead. Those would not be appreciated aspects of the game if typically true.

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: 2 Fast 4 Gnomz (WiiWare):

If the last gnomz had been 8-player it would have been an insta-buy. Sadly, it offered 8 players on the screen, only by making 4 of them cpus! Using the Driiift control method with one person using the Wiimote and the other the nunchuck would have made for some great chaotic fun.
being just on WiiWare further hurts them. They should take single player games like this one to the 3DS eShop.

cyrus_zuo commented on Talking Point: 3DS Depends on Nintendo Titles ...:

Nintendo 3DS is lacking in WESTERN 3rd party games.
It's clear that the system is doing great in Japan and multiple 3rd party games have done fantastic there (from MH3 to RE:R to Inazuma there are plenty of high selling games).
Unfortunately the Western audience wants:
1 - COD (or something similar)
2 - Madden
And Europe wants:
??? (I'd say Soccer, but clearly neither PES or FIFA is doing it, so I'm at a loss?)

Anyway, for the Western audiences Nintendo NEEDS to score a big hit like MH for Japan. I don't know if they are even trying, but they should be knocking on Activision's door every day asking what they can do to make CoD happen on a grand scale (not a crappy port) on the 3DS, and they should be at EA helping fund both Madden and a Battlefield game. That's the core market in the US, Nintendo needs to either go after it or recognize they will not have a core following in the US. (I'm not core, but it is clear what is and who they should talk to...and if they want the 3DS to be a huge hit here, they MUST get talking!)

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: Rhythm Heaven Fever (Wii):

Wonderful.

This game is everything that makes Nintendo my favorite game developer in one great package. I love that instead of yet another FPS game, Nintendo skips 3D entirely and makes a 2D crazy hard and addictive rhythm game that is laugh out loud funny and when playing gives me a feeling that is not similar to anything else on the market.

I'm big into "how I feel" while playing and finding games that are unique in that department. Rhythm Heaven delivers. A $30 steal! If you want innovation in games you should be buying this now (and loving it always!)

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: GO Series: Undead Storm (DSiWare):

A 9, really!?
I got this day 1, and I think it is pretty good for a $2 game. In the 7-8 range.
The visuals, as noted, are often ugly, it can be hard to tell one of the squad members from the Zombies.
The big issue though is the controls! Why they used the R/L buttons to control aiming is a mystery. It seriously impairs the game. Instead of quick and satisfying SmashTV like shooting you have a slow and imprecise turn and shoot mechanism that "you can learn to work with." For me that immediately means this game is not in the 9 range.

Multiplayer makes things better, and at the price it is worth picking up, but temper your expectations. There is a definite controls issue that is baffling, b/c they could have gone with SmashTV controls and then used the R/L buttons for picking weapons, but inexplicably did not. As a designer you should assign your most important function to the face keys. In this case the designer has made switching weapons more important than aiming, which is really unfortunate, b/c otherwise I totally agree it would be must-buy 9!

cyrus_zuo commented on Operation Rainfall Takes Aim at The Last Story:

I pre-ordered Xenoblade from GameStop and participated in the Operation Rainfall stuff, but I just can't decide if I'm interested in The Last Story (and I'm not interested in Pandora's Tower at all). The color palette from TLS screens looks awfully dark and unvaried.
I keep thinking the game looks really small in the number of areas based on the similarities between the screenshots. Hopefully I'm wrong. I'd consider this if it came over, but I wouldn't pre-order it based on how I feel today.

cyrus_zuo commented on Rayman Origins 3DS Has No Multiplayer:

Really?
My opinion of this game, which I own on Wii, isn't super high to begin with. I find it terribly over-rated.
Playing it with friends one summed it up nicely as "Absolutely amazing, but unenjoyable."
Beautiful game with great music and style, but I simply don't find it enjoyable to play and have had LOTS of trouble getting anyone from friends to co-workers to consider playing with me (that is abnormal for a co-op game).
Without co-op, I'd call this game a miss. I can't understand why they'd remove it. It's the saving feature! Multiplayer makes everything more fun, and while this game is great in so many ways, 'fun' is the place it is lacking.

Really?
"Yes, we know it is broken, and No we're not going to fix it."
That sounds like the new stance of Nintendo for 2012. First the Kid Icarus controls, now the Maka Wuhu glitch.
Fail on both accounts.
Please fix.

Dr. Mario Online! Yeah!
I've thought about getting it many, many times :).

I'd get MM as well, except I have the GCN disc with it. I've never played it!
I keep thinking I should, but the textures are so muddy, and on a HD TV everything looks horrible. I tried OoT with that disc, but gave up quickly due to the visuals. I was really pleased with the 3DS version, which I bought day 1 and LOVED. I'm one of those hoping MM gets the same treatment, b/c I'd really prefer not having to play it on my HD TV.

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: Kirby & The Amazing Mirror (3DS Virtua...:

Was glad to see the lower score, I've tried 2x to get into this, but am not digging it so far.
Getting around is a pain I find, forcing me to replay areas as I try to figure out where the exit is that gets me where it looks like I'm supposed to go, I didn't really like the non-linear gameplay in SuperStar and this one is much more that way.
Probably the biggest issue is that I'm REALLY enjoying the new Wii Kirby, and so I wanted this to be more like that, and it isn't. I'm sure it is good in its own right, but not really for me so far, maybe that will change. However, I'm more likely to go to another Ambassador game instead of going back to it, this was the first one I downloaded, b/c I'm playing on the Wii, and it's a bit of a disappointment to me.

cyrus_zuo commented on Feature: The Biggest 3DS Games of 2012:

Rhythm Thief & Professor Layton...

...but I really wish I was more excited about the upcoming lineup. This last year (Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart) was great! It seems unlikely there will be an encore, which reminds me of the Wii, which released, in a 18 month period EVERY major franchise (Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Metroid 3, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario Party, Super Paper Mario, ExciteTruck and more!) only to have nothing left in the tank for the next 36 months (ok, not exactly nothing, but if you want to see why the Wii excitement died, look at the releases from the first 18 months vs. the last 36!).

Anyway, I'm not really feeling this list. I'm excited for Mutant Mudds.
I hope we get a Rune Factory title.

...and I'm excited for the 2 titles I mentioned at the beginning, but I expect with the WiiU launch, that it's going to be a tough year for great 3DS content. I'm glad I'm saving Mario 3D Land until after I finish Zelda: SS ;).

I really enjoyed Skycrawlers on Wii. The arcade-like maneuvers with quick cut scenes made the game a LOT of fun to play.
I haven't played a game like it...maybe ever (does After Burner or Top Gun [NES] count?). I was worried about the complexity of controls, but really enjoyed Skycrawlers and have been watching reviews of this one, my only worry about having to use the stylus to aim (which I find painful).
Looks like it is worth checking out, thanks for sharing, especially Shiryu, I was hoping there would be some reference to Skycrawlers.

cyrus_zuo commented on Game of the Year: Nintendo Life Staff Awards 2011:

Rayman Origins is quite over-rated. I've been playing through it and the new Wii Kirby and where Kirby is pure fun, Rayman is flaky contols w/beauty. It's your typical style over substance game, doing well in end of year awards everywhere, but at my work, where NSMBWii was devoured for weeks until we got every possible thing, getting people to play Rayman has been hard. People like watching it, but they don't want to play it. That really says it all, it isn't a great game.

Notably, the aforementioned Kirby is, as is the very deserving Moto Heroz, which got 2 months of daily play :). There are some great Wii games this year, and Rayman is good, but not ddeserving to be so far up the list.

It is a really huge download!
After playing for not too long (30 minutes) I think the 9 is not deserved.
It's a very solid controlling and good looking game, but more like an 8 (or a high 7). I'm enjoying Pushmo much much more (it's honestly in a different league I think).
9s are a premium to me, Switch Force appears to be more in the category of "very good, but not amazing."
Sort of regretting the download :(.

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: Pinocchio's Puzzle (WiiWare):

I bought a copy! My thoughts:
Short on content, very relaxing, fun to play in a group, story is not real well done.
I liked the way the pieces were built, with squared edges that you rarely see in real puzzles. I've played several puzzle games on different platforms, this is better than the others b/c we can play together.
@ 500 points I do not regret the purchase, it is a great game for relaxing together, perfect for this time of year. I would love to see a couple more features, but overall, if you have a group, especially a mixed age group like we have at my house, I would endorse this as something fun to do. Even if the story text itself is lacking, the pull of a story, making you want to go from one puzzle to the next, is a nice thing.

I thought it was interesting and inexpensive so I picked it up. It's a little light on content (we got about half-way through the puzzles in a little more than an hour), but nice and relaxing. It was fun for 4 people to play as well. I would have loved a little more work on the story and voice-overs, but if you are looking for a game that is just puzzles it is nice. I don't regret the purchase at all.
