Loved it on the 3DS. A worthy purchase for any old-school fans.
It's also a touch easier than Mudds (I never finished all the Mudds Ghost levels).
Getting the additional health as early as possible of course is helpful!
I liked the customizable attack system, the 3D (3DS version superior?) and the interesting worlds.
I'll give it another play-through on WiiU :).

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: LEGO Jurassic World (Wii U):

These are hard to figure.

LEGO Batman 2 was amazing
LEGO Marvel was awful

The main difference was the animations. Building and fighting in Marvel both chugged, looking and feeling terrible. I was amazed they were by the same company.
I'm certain there are multiple LEGO game teams. The one that makes things like LEGO City on WiiU is one I want to buy games from. The one that made LEGO Marvel I want to avoid like the plague.

I'm super excited by this LEGO release. I've played through nearly every LEGO game from the beginning (in my opinion the Star Wars compilation is still the high point of the series). However, since LEGO Marvel I'm very wary...especially when reviewers don't mention the games in relation to each other on the technical level.
How does this compare animation, fighting and building wise compared to the other LEGO games? Clean and quick or sluggish-feeling and "something off?"

"largely because there are hardly any mature action games coming this year to the console"

Correction - "mature RATED action games"

There are plenty of mature action games, just few M-rated ones (and in my opinion M-rated and "mature" are typically opposites, most M-rated content is rather juvenile in my opinion).

Cannot wait!
I'm putting my money where my mouth has been.
I've asked for unique uses of the gamepad.
I've asked for third parties to take the WiiU seriously.
This game is what I've been asking for, it's my turn to do what I said I'd do - pay for it!
Absolutely NOT waiting for a price drop! Take my money, you've earned it and deserve it!

WHY isn't there online in it? You've had a year to figure out a new way to get online into the game! Asking people to pay for it when the game is a gimped version of the original removes any reason to buy.

MKDS was THE BEST in the series at Kart interactions. I loved bouncing into and off of the other Karts. Still a great game for local Multiplayer. I can't fathom how they could release the game knowing about online not being there and NOT fix the problem.
Shame!

Obligatory what is missing list:

1 - Rune Factory 4 - One of my absolute favorites on the system - it was retail in NA, I have the cartridge, so I don't accept the omission!
2 - Crush 3D - You can play it on PSP as well - a favorite platform puzzler of mine!

That is all, there are others, but these 2 really matter to me, the others would just be complaining. :)

Was super excited, but I'll stick w/Driiift Mania, and will continue to recommend for multiplayer groups. It really shines w/8 players!

Maybe this game will get an update adding a better meta game?

Being able to upgrade your truck and buy Nitro's was a big part of Super Off-Road. Sadly Rock 'n Roll racing isn't as well thought out from a game depth perspective as a 20 year old coin-op. It's both a shame and shameful.

I think the second stick is a matter of taste and weapon selection. I played 70+ hours of MH3U as a bowman, and never felt I needed a 2nd stick (except maybe underwater).
That said, my one complaint of the New 3DS is that silly nub. It really should have been a second circle pad. The nub is just like the old laptop nubs, it is not adequate camera control and does not replace a 2nd analog stick. Big missed opportunity. I will use it, but it is too clumsy to ever work in a FPS.

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS):

If you can find friends to play with, MH is a real treat. It's one of the best multiplayer games around, it just requires a dozen hours of playing together. Definitely not for short bursts of arcade like fun w/non gamers. It takes focus and dedication, but they're definitely rewarded!

cyrus_zuo commented on Fairune II is Adventuring Towards the 3DS eShop:

So I loved the first one, one my best gaming memories of 2014 was playing this next to my kids, who were each also playing the game, each on their 3DS. We stopped at different points to wait for others to catch up, we shared how to get through points were someone got lost, shared secret rooms that we found, and generally had a blast.

It made me pull out Y's again, a favorite of mine, and I found I'd enjoyed Fairune more, largely b/c it was just so short and tight! No endless grinding. Lots of the unique Y's take (those who want this game to be like other RPGs probably won't love it).

Cannot wait for the sequel, will definitely buy if it makes it to the US.

I really want Treasurenauts, but am starting to think it may not see the light of day.

@Spoony_Tech Agreed. I'm not a fan of "try it over and over until you've memorized every single jump and time to fire" game play. I'd rather have room to be inventive than be limited to doing the one thing the dev wants you to do to get past a challenge. :)
Looks beautiful! Hope there is plenty of room for inventiveness.

Based on their financials it is clearly not working.
Nintendo created so much negativity towards them during the Wii years they will be digging themselves out for years. Core gamers think of Nintendo as a joke for how they handled the Wii, so you may be right, it may have been worse...but they need they money more now.

Once again...only Mario, Luigi, Peach will be available.
Amiibo is the most mis-managed product in Nintendo's history and that is really saying something.
Too bad too, I'd be happy to buy some, but it's so painful to try and get some I've given up and become nearly anti-Nintendo over the silly things and how incomprehensibly stupid Nintendo has been about them.

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: Undead Storm Nightmare (3DS eShop):

"rotating your character is left up to the L and R shoulder buttons. If this sounds inconvenient, that's because it is when first starting out"
I disagree, it is CONTINUALLY inconvenient, not just when first starting out. Kokuga used the same controls, but fixed the problem by being more strategic (btw it has great download-play multi player for up to 4 players, so if co-op is your thing you owe it to yourself to buy that game).
Back on point, having fast action, but having to use the R/L buttons for rotation is a mis-match. A 180 degree direction turn on firing is painfully slow b/c of the controls. R/L gives you more angles you can fire at than using the face buttons ala Smash TV (8 direction firing), but I MUCH prefer the speed of 8 direction firing.
I think an 8 is high on this, but then controls are a big deal to me. Good controls make or break the game, and for me this is a good game that is broken by controls, and I only point it out b/c it is sad for me :(. I really want the controls to be faster to match the action, or the action slower to match the controls (time to fire up Kokuga again).

cyrus_zuo commented on Video: You NEED To Play Metroid Prime Trilogy:

Tempted...but not my thing.
I really enjoyed MP3, didn't get far into MP1 (LOVED the Snow level), and never tried MP2.
In the 2 weeks before Other M was released I played the second half of MP3 (I didn't realize I'd left that much undone!). I then dove into Other M. I'm in that tiny camp that felt it was a dramatically better game.

I've played through Other M 3x, and 100% it 2x. I got to 65% on MP3 and I was good. Really enjoyed pieces of it, but didn't love FPS approach, and really disliked the end-bosses.

Other M I loved the fast and fluid game play, that you could really improve at, and I ADORED switching from 2D to 3D by pointing the controller at the screen. For me, that was one of the more innovative and fun game play mechanics of the last generation.

I might get this compilation, but it would be more for playing some day than right away.

I'm far more interested in new games for the 3DS or New 3DS than I am in a new handheld. Transitions are really hard, and go hand in hand with a complete lack of games as you wait a year for a great game.

I said last year that I thought the 3DS was winding down. That may still be true in Japan, but I was really surprised and even wow-ed by the list of games Nintendo has for this year on the 3DS. There is nearly a release a month from Nintendo. I pre-ordered a MH4 New 3DS, and it will occupy a lot of my time, but Majora's Mask will be hot on its heels and I will play even more smash once I get that nub for doing smash attacks (I'm finding 3DS Smash and WiiU Smash to really complement each other, and strangely I like the 3DS one more b/c it's a great single-player game).

I'm excited for Puzzle's and Dragons, curious about Project Steam, intrigued by the latest Mario vs. DK and absolutely STOKED about a new Fire Emblem. Add in Xenoblade, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, and some SEGA 3D classics, and I see more games than I have time to play this year and we haven't even heard about what's coming the 2nd half of the year.

The 2015 release list for 3DS is already much better than 2014's.

Pre-ordered the New 3DS w/MH4. Waiting not-so patiently, but excited it is coming soon. I hope more players get into this one than the previous games. The key is really local co-op, so finding friends to play with is critical!

Controls on the original were AWFUL, making what would have been a fun little multiplayer game no-fun and painful to play. If they make the new one a dual-stick shooter instead of using the silly L and R to rotate your firing, I'll buy several copies!

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: BLOK DROP X TWISTED FUSION (Wii U eShop):

7 seems really high.
My experience with this game has been pretty poor. The game runs slowly, I don't know if it is frame rate or the engine, but the result is very unsatisfying physics and general sluggishness that you have to slog through. It has technical issues that keep the game from reaching its full potential, and what is left wasn't worth my time.

I'm happy to support the developer, but the game needs a lot of improvement on the technical side before I could fairly judge it. Right now its just not very good. It feels amateur and the fact that it gets a 7 shows how bad the situation in the eShop has gotten :(.

Maybe more exciting is the NEW 3DS?
I honestly felt like 2014 was a down year for the 3DS, outside of Fantasy Life there wasn't a lot that I loved. (several games I liked, but hard to measure up to 2013's games).
Hoping between MH4U and Zelda that the year will start off with a massive explosion of fun!

cyrus_zuo commented on Review: Fairune (3DS eShop):

Bought a copy for me and one for each of my kids and the 3 of us took it out over Christmas break.

It was a lot of fun to be playing at the same time, and as someone who loved Y's back when it came out, this was a wonderful love-letter, short enough for me to enjoy today when I don't have quite as much time to grind.

In short, I'm totally happy with the purchase(s)!
If you're an Y's fan wanting just a taste of the old Y's style game play, but in a much more condensed format, the game is absolutely worth the time and money.
Completed in just under 3 hours. We missed 3 of the 4 secret items, and each is very impactful, especially the 2nd, which gives you 2x experience and can make a replay MUCH shorter if you are looking to track down every last rare monster.

Thanks a ton for the review, it tipped the scale for me and I'm really glad I didn't skip this game.

cyrus_zuo commented on Interview: Shin'en Multimedia on FAST Racing N...:

Art of Balance on Wii U should be must-own for every console owner. Seriously, if you haven't bought the game, go get it. It's world's better than the beautiful, but slightly broken WiiWare game. A great game for mixed groups and parties with 5-player play on the main game and a party-game-like competition mode.

That said, I'll remain skeptical on Fast Racing Neo. I didn't like the core mechanic of the first one and found it more frustrating than fun to play. No question Shinen will bring the visual fidelity though :). I'm looking forward to the reviews and hope they've put in something to make the game more forgiving and playable by people like me (and my kids...who didn't even want to try the first one).

@sam_robinson Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to respond! I've watched quite a few of the videos on the game and see the intent of the communication through blood, it is just too much for my tastes.
Did you consider a different color as an option to turn on (Purple? Yellow?) something that wasn't so blood like (Yellow might be fluid color of the clones). Further might be the option for "flower mode" where flowers pop out and cover the walls in the same way the blood did.
I'm sure I'm a small subset of your potential audience, and probably not really meaningful. I'm an adult who plays games, but I only buy Nintendo consoles b/c the content Nintendo's consoles offer best fits my personal tastes. Stealth 2 runs just outside of my tastes due to the blood splattering.
That's just me though.
Wish you guys all the best and hope the game sells fantastically well. If you happen to update to address the concern I'll be the first one in line (and perhaps the only one...I get that so, I have no expectations! ;))

cyrus_zuo commented on New Study Finds No Connection Between Video Ga...:

This study is deeply flawed on how it is looking at correlation. The reason for the drops in those rates is people not interacting as much. Living in a digital world also has decreased marriage rates, birth rates, and the ability for many to carry on a real-life conversation with someone in the same room w/o using Twitter. (or did gaming cause all that? ;))
I don't know that the results are wrong, and I think they may be right, but this study is terrible correlation focused, headline grabbing garbage. We can do better.
