Speaking as someone without this thing, I don't get how the "cartridges" would be able to consistently come out without pulling out the piece below. When piece A connects to B which connects to C, and you pull on A, you have no control over whether A will detach from B or B from C.
Also, kudos on this build as it seems to be the first Nintendo one that's worth the price.
I could see them riding the coattails of Virtual Boy coming to NSO, speaking of Gunpei Yokoi.
There are quite a few games that are easy to write off but then spawn a healthy franchise. Kairosoft has these oddly-priced "Story" games that seem niche in isolation but more impressive in their quantity. Or those Wales Interactive FMV games.
I think gaming became an art form precisely in March 1994 with Super Metroid, especially with that chilling opening. Then 2 weeks later, Final Fantasy 6 solidified it.
@HalBailman Wow, what prompted all of that? At any rate, Super Potato isn't at street level, so you have to look up to find the sign that guides you to the stairwell.
Lots of "so long" jokes. But none had it quite right in my opinion: So long, D. Bowser!
Devon will have some uncharismatic shoes to fill. While Nintendo is doing better in a very significant sense than under Reggie and Iwata, those guys definitely had charisma and charm that has been lacking since.
How do you say "send us a review copy" without saying "send us a review copy"?
This guy probably shouldn't handwave the main hook. It's like Etrian Odyssey but where you can learn Japanese. But also, "It is not a Japanese language learning tool." Kinda like how "Pokemon with guns" made it really difficult for you to get guns, as parodied by Dunkey. Then again, perhaps it can thrive at this point on the reviews alone.
I'd love a feature article on the best games to learn various subjects, as there's something of a Renaissance of semi-edutainment.
I thought the increased bus speed was the whole point of requiring a faster and more expensive SD card. And if the game cards are basically SD cards, why is it better to load the game onto one?
@PinderSchloss
It’s objectively lesser because it’s not new to you? Having it depend on the user’s mental state and experience history is the very definition of subjective. I think you provide a useful reminder, as this is an angle that hadn't been mentioned, but it just could have been delivered more accurately.
That first letter breaks my head. Comparing Mario Galaxy with Metroid Prime answers your own question. Metroid Prime Remastered was released at $40 and was the final first-party physical $40 game. After that, $50 seems to have become the floor of the variable pricing (See WarioWare Move It). A 21-year old game gets remastered for $40, so there’s confusion about how a remastered 18-year old game can get the same treatment (especially when they had the exact same Metacritic score originally). Comparing these MSRP’s as if one of them isn’t two games? Throwing in your own irrelevant discount you found as if that’s apples to apples? Did you miss the announcement of a movie that will accompany the games and drive sales? Or did I miss the announcement of a Metroid Prime 4 movie that will drive sales?
Backwards compatibility means this dual console generation will be 15 years or so. Due to rampant inflation in the wake of COVID stimulus, games from before 2021 aren’t really good comparisons for what new games should cost. Inflation-adjusted, TOTK was cheaper than BOTW. Ironically, it’s the same inflation that’s causing these questions, as people recoil at the pinch they feel, and answering them. That doesn’t fully explain Galaxy being $20 for its share of Mario 3D All-Stars, but who’s to say it wasn’t half of that collection’s value and thus $30? And that was a limited time sale whereas this $40 (or $35 if physical) has to be a sensible price even 7 years from now when the eshop is still open.
“what can only be objectively described as a less significant gaming experience.” 2 games is objectively a less significant gaming experience than 1?
There are much more valid articulations of this point. For example, what does the Virtual Boy stand do for $100? But then probably this is a niche price which reflects no expectations of mass adoption. And Mario Kart World’s price which was probably a bit of a trial balloon, a way to steer people to digital purchases, and most importantly a way to move the Overton window of pricing.
The genius of the “action adventure” genre being created is that those who are better at adventure (finding upgrades) don’t have to rely as much on their action (combat) skills and vice versa. However, since this has become the default genre in the 3-D era, experienced gamers are good at both (and guides have trivialized the adventure part of that). Thus, the same game design from yesteryear results in easier gaming experiences even when not resulting in easier games.
Various gaming communities merging in the modern gaming space (Sega and Neo Geo going third party, MS and Sony releasing on PC, exclusives becoming rarer, PC games getting ported to console), there are more games than ever vying for one’s attention. So devs err on the side of too easy unless they know their audience is there for the difficulty (FromSoft).
@Pak-Man While Nintendolife does the single best job of anyone highlighting as many games as possible, and then also for creating a forum for users to supplement that, you can also see if a game has a Steam page with reviews. That idea was danced around in these responses but not quite stated directly. There are also of course Youtube channels dedicated to possible hidden gems. Just do a Youtube search for the game and “review.”
These are great ideas, especially the animation debug mode and the skipping around within an episode. The latter helps to show the highlights off to others who might then try it out themselves.
I wish sound tests though could normalize a screen off mode like in Smash.
I think Frog might be my favorite character in any game. Yes, with the Woolseyisms.
And regarding the remaster talk, I'd be down with a cross-progression 3D / 2D style like DQ11. But cut the DS bonus content. "But if you don't like it, you don't have to play it." No, it dilutes the game's quality by existing.
I did not realize that Japanese kids have a game of kicking their shoe off while on a swing to see how far it will go. (Fling It is the game on this list that recreates that.)
I'm glad they play differently so it won't be like the recent Power Rangers game. But they'll probably make us level them up, so the more characters, the more homework. 😆
I bought this partly because it's my favorite game from the Switch era (so I kinda have to) and because the base game gave me more than $70 worth of value. But yeah, it's a bit disappointing. The price would have made more sense if there was also a Crocodile Isle and Northern Kremisphere. Then it'd be something like $7 per layer which is closer to the ratio of the base game.
@B3RTAY To be fair, people visualize time spatially as a line (at least in the west), so someone might say that while thinking of spatial distances but in the context of talking about time. Therefore, I revoke my pedantry.
@KoiTenchi They were one of the very few third party publishers that supported the N64 (31 games), so there should be a good relationship with Nintendo.
I remember the commentary that it was sweet that the reason the game came out so late is that the devs were just having so much fun making it. Well now we what that means. It's not so sweet now.
I don't like the repetitive nature of sports games, so I like the adventure mode idea. But playing as a baby is off-putting. I even want them removed from Mario Kart.
@Markatron84 Nah, I'm all about 99%ing a game. The final 1% is often something for people with too much time or kids for whom it's worth it to have that sense of accomplishment. I'd rather wrest my autonomy back from the game devs by having them not be the decider of when I move on. 😆
@Sonicka
I think all of these Switch 2 editions are part of the general FOMO intended to incentivize upgrading consoles. Even if they could run on Switch 1, that defeats the purpose somewhat. They didn't announce GameShare, so maybe not even through that. I could see the mice being important in that Donut Block game though.
