I'm not surprised SimCity didn't use them since it came out before, but SimCity 2000 came out in 1995 and was isometric. Isometric and d-pads don't go that well together. It should have used the mouse.
I had no idea Doom used it which is very fitting.
I'm glad Yoshi's Safari didn't use it, as that would have been too easy.
I wonder if Nintendo would be up for a first-person shooter again. Obviously, the market has been quite saturated ever since Halo, and it doesn't fit Nintendo's family-friendly image. But Retro has proven to be Nintendo's new Rare in other ways, and Metroid Prime has FPS elements. Maybe they could get some of the old Time splitters team to join.
I think they're focusing first on higher sellers and checking boxes like (1) multiplayer casual gamer, (2) single player core gamer 10+, and (3) single player younger gamer.
I suppose these upgrades will be this generation's Wii U ports, titles that fill in the release schedule a bit. They'll want to mete them out due to resources but also to give each one a chance in the media cycles. They'll get around to it.
And perhaps they'll add Super Mario Land 2 to Mario Maker 2 with a paid mouse upgrade pack.
I asked Grok about this a few weeks ago because I had been wondering where Wart is. It confirmed Wart as the most obvious snub in the Mario Kart series' respective rosters.
The Kart character really caught me by surprise. 😂
I'm a bit surprised there were no Kongs in here, like maybe Wrinkly. Or peripheral characters like Croctopus. I bet we get Rambi via DLC to coincide with his game at Super Nintendo World.
@OldGamer999 Perfect assessment. But as much as others are following Nintendo's lead on pricing of games, perhaps they will stay ahead of the pace on pricing for hardware as well. Maybe Xbox's handheld will be pricier than the Series S. (Since the printing of this article, the Series S has gone from $300 to $380 already but is of course still cheaper than Switch 2.)
I think they sent as many of the early consoles to the US to get good stock before the tariffs kicked in. That doesn't mean the US will be covered though as it still makes sense to trickle those out in the US to buy time for geopolitics to stabilize without raising prices. In the meantime, they can credibly feign shortages.
@obijuankanoobie Since you haven't gotten a straight answer yet:
Obviously, you're looking to split the difference between not giving it a fair shot and not playing the entire game just to find out that you didn't like it. With that being said, it's not a long game, and it's not grindy as long as you do the optional parts at the end. (For the love of God, don't do the non-canonical and mind-numbing Lost Sanctum and Dimensional Vortex.)
Without spoilers, if you get to the chapter titled "Forward to the Past," no one can say you didn't give it a try. But I would give it at least through "Footsteps! Follow!" to give it a chance to show you its charms and gameplay variety.
With that being said, there's a new area still to be found after that, and it's probably most people's favorite by far. I think most people find the climax of the game to be the chapter What Lies Beyond? and the one after it (which is almost as memorable as the ending sequence for Super Metroid). Those chapters are a bit after Forward to the Past. Towards the end, the game gets a bit more philosophical, but by then you're likely committing to finishing it. I will say the ending is one of the best in gaming, and the ending music is THE best in gaming.
He gets it. We're the ones who still have cartridge games from the 90's, have seen eshops close, have the least backwards compatibility because of "integrated hardware and software experiences," and have the most nostalgia. We value resale value. This, we're the gaming version of preppers, and so we like physical.
We might need more tiers than AAA and indie to properly position one's game on an ever-stretching spectrum. I forget who, but I saw one YouTube game reviewer who gave a dollar value rather than a score to account for the discrepancy in ambition between a $3 10/10 like Downwell and a $60 10/10 like Smash Ultimate. It was a brilliant approach and might start to become even more useful.
It seems the issue is the cost of the high-capacity game cards since they're presumably faster tech like the difference between MicroSD and MicroSD Express. That makes me wonder if it will end up being worth whatever benefits MicroSD Express affords. Shorter loading times? Would traditional MicroSD cards be slower to load from than a hard drive on an Xbox or PS5?
I don't understand why they'd need to find the right studio when many of the original developers are still in the industry and literally work together still.
@Toastmaster But they have another Perfect Dark in the oven as we speak.
It's all about replaying due to New Game+, and the original has some of the best pixel art of all-time, so they could get away with a radical departure if they also include the original. They would just need to allow you to play each mode with the same save file.
And I don't mind in the slightest if they axe the horrible DS add-on content.
The solution for the cross-gen titles will be to buy the Switch 1 version. Perhaps there won't be an upgrade pack, but it will retain its resale value better. Or, what if Nintendo does a Switch 3 which is also doubly backwards compatible? And at least the eshop will outlive you which is what matters, haha.
Does only Nintendo have compression specialists? While I think the console will do well, I can see third parties regretting supporting it. Many of us will not buy many of those game key cards.
Ubisoft = ubiquitous software, supporting as many platforms as possible. I don't think that's what it actually stands for since it was originally computer only, but it's a neat rebrand.
It's weird from a consistency standpoint for a platformer with no fall damage to have deaths from pits. Is the pit so deep that it counts as a type of fall damage? Metroidvanias solve this though of course.
Also, in many 3D platformers, you can lose quite a lot of time by falling off a tower or mountain and having to repeat sections. Sometimes I'd rather lose a life and respawn where I was.
Not just a song lyric, the button sequence is also a song title by the punk band The Ataris. Obviously, the irony is noticed, given that the Konami code was from after the Atari era.
@masterLEON Thank you for that warning. That definitely ruins the chill vibe.
