Re: "It Will Have A Chilling Effect On Game Design" - EU Group Responds To 'Stop Killing Games'

Thomystic

I could see them solving this by giving the server info to some preservation society for one game for a year. Then when that org whose motives we trust also has to close it down, we'll have a better sense of the math involved.

I don't get the argument about it chilling game design though. I get the argument about the rights holder being liable, but that sounds like something that you fix in a different way.

Re: Mega Man Is One Of Capcom's "Most Important IPs" Despite No New Games In 7+ Years

Thomystic

To be fair, he does get good representation at the Osaka and Tokyo Capcom stores. I think they just don't know how to modernize him. But they know from Ace Attorney that the market is healthy for AA releases. With increased backwards compatibility making console generations effectively 15 years, they won't be able to cheese headlines by re-releasing the same collections every 7 years. They'll need to finally give us a Star Force collection and/or Legends collection.

Re: Furukawa's Defence Of Game-Key Cards Ain't All That Convincing

Thomystic

Also, I don't see why the speed of the game loading is that important at lower file sizes. These cards are presumably more expensive because they have faster bus speeds or whatever. But that's not important for a 3gb game, hence Switch 1 games playing JUST FINE in Switch 2. Just sell lower speeds at lower sizes so that publishers have more options.

Switch 1 > 2 could end up being PSP > PS Vita and for the same reason.

Re: Furukawa's Defence Of Game-Key Cards Ain't All That Convincing

Thomystic

Not that anyone is going to read this far, and I hope I'm not duplicating one of the infinitude of comments above.

Nintendo's presumed rule that publishers have to have the same MSRP for physical and digital caused so many issues, all meant to drive the market to the eshop where Nintendo gets a huge cut.

Publishers can use backwards compatibility to get around that and the game key card issue at the same time. A 20gb game could be sold for $40 on the S2 and S1 eshops with S2 owners not expected to buy it digitally on the S1 eshop. If a physical S2 card would require selling it at $60 which wouldn't be allowed, they could sell a S1 version on a 32gb card for $40 and then sell a $10 S2 upgrade pack. They would effectively have created a $50 S2 physical version.

Re: Switch 2 Welcome Tour Developer Gets Officially Revealed

Thomystic

I'm playing it right now and think it's fair to call it quaint. It's deeper than the trailer made it look and people saying it's only for techies overlook that, if included, it could have created more techies than otherwise. Parents might not know about it or what it is, but kids might not be so curious about it as to burn social capital with their parents to ask for it. And with indiepocalypse, gamers wanting to roll their hobby into a career might want to look more on the hardware side of the equation than software.

@Hero-of-WiiU One look at the game thumbnail, in fact. I keep confusing them for each other.

@TKundNobody Economics is only part of marketing; psychology is the other part. Psychological pricing says that people are drawn to round numbers. So it would be unlikely to be $460 instead of $450. Frankly, if it got a 10% attach rate at $10, they would only need to charge $451 as a pack-in to make the same revenue, since that would be a 100% attach rate. So while costs are always passed on to the consumer, sometimes they're diluted. You're correct as far as your point goes, but it should go farther.

@Zyph Elasticity of demand is the operative concept here. Going from $0 to $10 will result in less demand.

Re: System Shock 2 Remaster Gets A New Launch Date For Switch

Thomystic

This is really elevating the concept of a gameplay trailer. No narration at all, and it barely seems curated.

There's some animation jank which might left in on purpose for charm. It'd be cool to see a remaster that allows you to toggle classic and modern animations akin to graphics and soundtracks. I hope the inevitable Chrono Trigger remake/remaster does that.

Re: Nintendo Download: 3rd July (North America)

Thomystic

This Aery series needs to chill. That's 26 entries in the eshop with seemingly the exact same gameplay.

Also, I always like to predict the "nothing for me this week" percent. I had never guessed as high as this week, and I happened to guess it right on the button. It must be those Welcome Tour guessing mini games training me this morning.

Re: This New Switch 2 Dock Could Be Perfect For GameCube Enthusiasts

Thomystic

Hopefully, there are skins available by someone for GameCube-style Joy Cons to make this look better.

@Nintendo4Sonic To your point, it would be nice for the article to have a picture of the backside to be sure fans are unobstructed since it's a "sleeve" the dock fits into. But the rear picture on the Kickstarter page shows an open back.

@RafaelNadal @Yosher Since the back is open, it does seem like it will make the whole setup more front-heavy than the docked Switch 2 already is.

Re: Review: Ruffy And The Riverside (Switch) - An Inventive Platformer That's More Than Copy-Paste

Thomystic

It'd be amazing if there was a way to quantify video game callbacks and references, like how researchers' influence is measured by their number of times cited by other researchers. As foundational as Mario and others are, their games (individually) pale in terms of games sold to GTA V and Minecraft and probably even Angry Birds. The kids get a skewed sense of a game's importance by looking at sales figures. Mario 64 only sold 12 million copies but is much more important than Uncharted 4 which sold 18.

Re: Review: Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Controller - The Return Of The King

Thomystic

How does the review not at least comment on the D-pad at all? And given that it's $65, how can this read like the PowerA GCN pad doesn't exist? It has a proper sized ZL button, has home and capture buttons on the front where they belong, and works on Switch 1. It doesn't, however, have analog triggers, so there are pros and cons. But comparisons are part of reviews.

Regarding form factor, I actually prefer the way the Wavebird feels. I'm not a fan of the empty space in the original controller that the Wavebird filled. It made it look more solid. And it sounds like it could have been well-used here in placing the home, capture, gamechat, and minus buttons.

Re: Drag X Drive Switch 2 eShop Price Revealed

Thomystic

This game makes me wonder what other sports could demonstrate the double mouse feature in a control scheme. If this was one of 5 sports in a Wii Sports-like release, I could see the overall package being popular and this game within that collection being singled out for praise.

Maybe cross-country skiing but through famous Nintendo locales?

Re: Beat 'Em Up Classic Double Dragon Gets A Modern Revival On Switch This October

Thomystic

How many times will try to "revive" this franchise? Each time, they fail to reference the other revivals, suggesting that they are deemed to have not succeeded. But that hurts the appeal here, as we've heard this story before, rather than helping it, as if this is finally the real deal.

That's funny that the trailer speaks of stage gimmicks. I recall hearing Kit and Krysta explain that in Japan, they see the word "gimmick" as a morally neutral term like the word "feature," not realizing it's a negative word meaning a trick to sell you something. Then again, some of their gimmicks really are gimmicks like the anti-gravity in MK8.

Re: Street Fighter 6's First Season 3 Character Arrives This August

Thomystic

@shiningpikablu252 @Medic_alert
The SF2 character designer back in the day was Akira Yasuda who went by "Akiman." It's probably a tribute to his iconic work. Further, WWF / nWo Revenge (developed by AKI) had fake bonus characters, with one also being named "Akiman." Given how many of those bonus fighters I was able to turn into SF2 characters, it's possible that was also a tribute and a play on the fact of their shared name.
