Re: Last Chance To Grab These 100+ Switch 1 & 2 Games In Nintendo's 'Hits For The Holidays' eShop Sale (North America)

Thomystic

If Nier Automata gets any cheaper, I'll have to double dip.

Prince of Persia is 60% off of its already reduced MSRP of $30. Relative to its original MSRP of $50, it's 76% off. I'm torn between assuaging my guilt of paying too little for it $32 at retail by double dipping and signaling through such a purchase (since they won't know it's a double dip) that they were right to eventually discount it that low.

Re: Talking Point: Our 2026 Nintendo And Switch 2 Predictions

Thomystic

I've mostly limited myself to things no one above has said:

  • Since Switch 1 games should be aimed at casuals a year in to Switch 2, the most logical choice is Ring Fit Adventure 2. The Switch 2 Joy Cons don't fit in the Ring Con, and at this point, they still had people buy a huge peripheral for one game. The game sold 15 million units!
  • I do expect Mario Maker 2 Switch 2 upgrade w/ mouse controls and Mario Wonder stylings (but not Wonder effects as that'd be too hard to program).
  • Nintendo acquires Grezzo.
  • Metroid Prime 2 remaster now that Retro Studios is more available.
  • SNES Remix by indieszero.
  • When is Square going to do something with Parasite Eve?
  • We probably won't get Wind Waker HD since we have the original in NSO. But Twilight Princess HD would plug the Zelda anniversary gap, and Tantalus Media ports games for Nintendo at pretty regular intervals.
  • I hope there's a return of Nintendo-published indies sometime. It hasn't happened since Good Job in March 2020. I'd say SwitchMo, but Intelligent Systems is busy with Fire Emblem. Maybe HAL utilizing the full resolution of the Switch 2 with 4-player BoxBoy + BoxFam.

Re: Talking Point: Does It Bother You That Big Games Companies Are Using GenAI?

Thomystic

How much AI are the game engines using? I suppose this issue would be blurred further if the engine itself was using it. Then its use pervades but is hidden.

I have long wondered how devs get around the catch-22 of making assets to post to get funding so that they can fund assets and programming. You have to have some upfront money or free labor it seems. It takes money to make money. AI could help someone get over this catch-22 or at least draft their vision so that a real artist knows what they're looking for with less back-and-forth error.

I'm sympathetic to its use early in the dev process but not for ideation. Ideation is literally what justifies the owners having ownership. Who would respect a Chief Prompt Officer over a Chief Creative Officer?

Re: More Switch Games Have Received Compatibility Updates For Switch 2

Thomystic

@metaphysician True. I think the Wii achieved it with GameCube partially by not evolving the hardware very much and throwing in the towel in terms of horsepower. And backwards compatibility was the biggest difference between PS3 and PS3 Slim, making me picture that big hump in the middle being a little PS2 inside it.

Re: More Switch Games Have Received Compatibility Updates For Switch 2

Thomystic

Has backwards compatibility ever been so labor-intensive? I'm really impressed with the commitment they're showing with Switch 2. And yet somehow this isn't slowing down their game release pace. This suggests they really will try to get 8 years out of this console generation too because they sure as heck won't want to do this again that soon.

Re: Nintendo Download: 18th December (North America)

Thomystic

The kind of AI usage in game dev I could totally get behind is if Egg Console used it to add some language options. Just have AI translate if you don't have the resources to get people to do it. Otherwise, we're having AI translate it anyway by holding our phones up to the screen.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Has Sold Over 6 Million Copies

Thomystic

Your explanation in the article makes it sound like the six games average one million sold. Your headline makes it sound like they average six million sold. That's quite a difference in meaning despite only a subtle difference in syntax. In the one case, they'd be absolutely right to be disappointed.

Re: Hades 2 Dev Shares Adorable GOTY Nominee Artwork Ahead Of The Game Awards

Thomystic

Because of the execution of the awards show, we already knew when it was being announced that it was either DK Bananza or Clair Obscur. Silksong had already eliminated Death Stranding 2 for best action adventure game, and Clair Obscur had already beaten Silksong and Hades 2 for best indie game. Then Clair Obscur beat Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 for best RPG. DKB hadn't yet lost and so could have been the winner still in theory.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel - Mega Man 6

Thomystic

I like them both and like the arrangement of the NA one better. But the motion blur is a bit tacky, and that castle does not look like Wily's. They must have gotten that from the wrong series. So I went with Japan.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Marvel Games

Thomystic

These lists don't usually limit themselves to Switch. It would have been cool to see these next to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1&2, the SNES Spiderman and X-Men games, and of course NES Silver Surfer. 😆

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's N64 Library With Two Classic Platformers

Thomystic

I'm surprised so many of y'all haven't heard of Tonic Trouble. It got an entire cover on Nintendo Power here in NA. Ubisoft was making so many platformers around then. It was quite the pivot from Jimmy Connor Tennis on SNES, their first console game. It makes sense that they obtained the Prince of Persia license later.

Both Ubisoft platformers from 1999, but NLife didn't mention that they're both limbless! I suppose it's obvious enough from the post, but it's still a very odd coincidence.
