Re: Where Are Mario Kart World's Non-Mario Racers? Producer Kosuke Yabuki Has The Answer

Thomystic

They added stupid characters like fish and coin purses. Get rid of the baby characters, too, and add in some more Kongs. Unless they're planning a new Diddy Kong Racing, what are they saving them for? It extends the Mario universe without contradicting it, and they have actual hands. There's a theme park to hype for, as well. Or characters (with hands) from other Mario spinoffs like WarioWare or Mario & Luigi.

Re: Forget Switch 2 Game Key-Cards - "Full On-The-Cart Physical Releases" Are What People Want, Says Publisher Lost In Cult

Thomystic

How can this small outfit produce game cards more cheaply for publishers than Nintendo themselves who have the economies of scale, the experience, the leverage in their contracts, etc.?

@Runex2121 There are plenty of publishers complaining that they didn't sell much. Key cards is a major reason why.

@Sambuc I don't want to dogpile, but it's Nintendo's being arguably the best platform at physical media that makes this such a big deal. If even Nintendo gives up, the industry will lose its leader on this issue, just like Mario Kart World being $80 will shape prices on PS and Xbox

Re: Video: Right, We Need To Talk About GameChat On Switch 2

My guess on the 3D chess here: Nintendo is competing with Roblox and Fortnite as much as with Sony and Xbox because kids are growing up now away from consoles. One reason is that it's the new playground and hangout. Many parents don't want their kids on Discord or to have smart phones, so this is a safe alternative. It's simple enough for kids or non-gaming parents to set up and allows for the flexibility of playing different games, suggesting that it's for hanging out and not so much just for gaming together with the same game.

There's no way EPD Tokyo spent 8 years on just DKB and Balloon World. Koizumi is the new Miyamoto and has been leveraged by having an additional team put under him. Remember the massive amount of cash Nintendo put into bringing more development in-house.

Re: Talking Point: How Are You Finding Mario Kart's Open World?

Thomystic

I knew I would love this, and I absolutely do. They've almost given us a 3D Mario platformer at launch after all. I've longed lamented Mario Kart's lack of a sense of space, but that's mitigated now. Then again, on MK8DX, the first thing I would do on each track is explore.

If you liked driving around Peach's Castle in MK64, then you should love this. The world is its reward. You shouldn't need incentives. Explore. Go people or train watching.

I differentiate between intrinsic and extrinsic replay value. The former is how fun a game is aside from its structure. The latter is its structure: the various carrots they can dangle and convince you to care about.

With that being said, the homogenized sticker prizes are a disappointing design choice (and that it doesn't tell you how many there are or that you have). Collecting music tracks like in DKB would have been better, as stated earlier, and the map could be improved a lot.

Re: Shuhei Yoshida Says Sony Doesn't Really Consider Nintendo As Competition

Thomystic

I think this means "primary" competition or rival. He also elaborated that Nintendo is better at getting kids into video games such that they eventually become Sony or Microsoft customers. So some of this take might mean that they weren't antagonistic towards Nintendo, recognizing their own dependence. Kids growing up on mobile games and Minecraft might grow up to be PC gamers. So Nintendo helps slot kids into the console lane which benefits MS and Sony.

However, a lot of the industry is recognizing the lucrative middle. Nintendo is now touting power, Sony is acknowledging the importance of family games like Astro Bot, and Microsoft now has the cheapest current console. And MS and Sony kinda sorta have handhelds now. There's about to be a red ocean again.

Re: Sounds Like The 'DK Rap' Is In Donkey Kong Bananza

Thomystic

While I love the David Wise soundtracks, and even DKC3's, I hated that DKCR's was mostly remixes. I didn't like Sonic Mania for the same reason. I like it in Mario Kart World because they're from all over the Mario universe, but I really hope this game isn't mostly remixed music.

Re: Donkey Kong Bananza Hasn't Forgotten About Diddy & Dixie Kong After All

Thomystic

Nintendo always makes cute little reactions for when you jump on a Toad or hit one with a shell or drive over a Shy Guy. But they rarely do that for important characters or feature that in a trailer so as to not encourage friendly fire or excess violence maybe. Yet in this part of the Direct, DK hurls a letter at Dixie who does a jump spin animation as a result. It's really strange.

Re: Donkey Kong Bananza Features Two-Player Co-Op, And You Can Even GameShare To Switch 1

Thomystic

To those complaining that this isn't true co-op, you have a point. However, this mode seems to address three issues. Many DK fans became fans in the 80's or 90's and have young kids who might benefit from a small side role. Also, the singing component will attract some to the joy of the game who aren't that keen on Hulk-smashing action. Finally, many (especially girls) will appreciate that the game allows one to play as Pauline, at least in some capacity.
