The mouse feature will end up being seen as one of the best recent console gaming innovations, smaller but also more impactful than the Wii U's gamepad.
Watch these numbers for Switch 1 climb a lot higher if there's no price hike in Japan. People will import or engage in arbitrage. (Even a slight price hike there would make the OLED the same price as the semi-region-locked version of the Switch 2, if not already.)
Game key cards would be less of an issue if Nintendo just promised to have games redownloadable for a minimum number of years, like 50. But they want that flexibility.
Where does it say the full game will be on the card? Not in the trailer or the web site. I'm super stoked for MKT though and am surprised this wasn't a separate article with that in the headline. "Mystery game in MK Kollection announced"
I've been defending them against those concerned about an HD-2D monoculture thus far, but I worry they're gonna drive it into the ground before making the inevitable Chrono Trigger remake, knocking 20% off its sales numbers. I bought into this series for its novelty and even the second game since it improved on everything, but I'm not interested enough for 3 games. They'll have to come up with even more contrived names to continue to fit their OCTOPATH acrostic gambit than in the second game.
@Bigmanfan Yeah, this seemed to me like such filler. Not the game or even the trailer; it just had no place in the Direct. There are announcement trailers, release date trailers, and launch trailers. Or story vs. gameplay trailers. There's a reason why "new construct trailer" is not a term.
This game got on my radar strangely because of bingeing Chrono Trigger OST covers. The composer for PvZ made a vocal version of Schala's Theme. I wondered who that angelic human is and found that she is a composer with an OST credit.
I was gonna skip physical for this since I believe the ideas were used in later Shantae games. Thus, this would be like playing an antiquated build of a game. But it's genius for them to add some DLC to add to the uniqueness of the release, preserving the integrity and historicity of the base level product while still increasing the value proposition.
@N00BiSH How exactly would you upgrade or update a GBA cartridge?
@Cakefish It seems a lot of titles with unlocked frame rates are getting automatic bumps on S2. So hopefully developers moving forward will take that approach if they don't plan to sell official upgrade packs.
@Jack_Goetz For a long time, people were salivating over the prospect of a Switch Pro. The way so many games run better on Switch 2 and the free update patches mean that even if there literally no new games, the S2 would have its merit just for that. Of course, no one expected a Switch Pro to cost $450.
@Willo567 Steam has a store that dates back to 2004. And while things have been delisted before, and you're more likely to need to reinstall a game on PC versus console, it's a much different prospect than trusting a console eshop to stay open. Valve also has the vast majority of their profit eggs in the digital retailer basket while console platform holders are more differentiated. This means Valve can't afford to lose trust with consumers on redownloading in the future the way a console maker can.
Hopefully they learned something from the key card fiasco and at least tentpole big budget releases like FF7R and Elden Ring will be fully on card (if they can fit). Hopefully other developers will make the game cards at least playable if they still want to require a download. Capcom's RE 4-6 trilogy is instructive here where the most popular game was entirely present.
Some are saying here what they think a Mario 40th Direct in September would mean for a general direct. They could be the same thing, hello? That's what happened for the 35th. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Direct#2020
Silksong will not be a shadow drop since it will be playable at some upcoming convention I read.
There is still plenty left in the closet for several publishers:
Ubisoft: Plenty of AC games not on Nintendo, Rayman collection
Square: Chrono Trigger, Quintet games, PS1 era games, KH for real this time
Capcom: Breath of Fire, more Mega Man collections, and now that Kamiya is back perhaps he can browbeat them into a Viewtiful Joe collection, Zack & Wiki w/ mouse controls
Konami: Goemon, Bonk, Bomberman collections
Namco: Tekken, Time Crisis (w/ mouse controls), Soul Calibur, Tales collections
Atlus: Trauma Center collection (w/ mouse controls)
Now that we've got mouse controls: Monkey Island, please!
Digital Eclipse Gold Masters themes I'd love: Eugene Jarvis & Midway, Advergames like Pepsiman and Cool Spot, unlicensed games like Tengen Tetris and 3-D Noah's Ark, Edutainment titles like Carmen Sandiego and Number Munchers
Maybe Xbox was feeling left out with it being announced at a State of Play and with speculation that the release date would be announced at a Nintendo Direct. Shrewd.
So many store displays cover up the bottom portion of the game box which is of course where the disclaimers about download required or game key card are. Walmart has this unnecessary "NEW RELEASES" banner in front of that section.
I think Sony can afford to do this more than XBox. As the default high-powered console, they still have a clear value proposition. Also, they understand the economics of exclusives enough to only port older games.
I played the Crash 1 remake for about an hour before deciding the series is trash. This must have been a big factor, along with the linear gameplay and poorly chosen z-axis viewing angle.
I'm glad I didn't waste time watching the video since the conclusion itself was a waste of time. I don't need digital foundry to tell me about the game differences. Each thing does what it does better. Wow. Isn't the whole point of such a question specs and performance? Some context for why S2's battery life is not bad all things considered?
Silver Surfer--if I remember correctly, he's the villain in that one story. What was it? Oh, right. The one where he squared off against the Angry Video Game Nerd.
The physical is gonna be $60 while the digital is $30. 😳 Maybe that's market value though, or maybe that gives them the same margins. It seems crazy though.
I love that Activision branched off of Atari, picking an earlier name in the alphabet presumably to show up earlier in the phone book. Then Activision co-founders also founded Accolade, doing the same thing. Then other Activision employees created Acclaim and Absolute with the same idea.
I don't know of a single Digital Eclipse release where it would make sense to chronicle this crazy lineage, but I echo the sentiments of those who want an Activision extension which would at least cover part of this.
@Liam_Doolan To be clear, does this include singing? Movies (and I suppose games too) sometimes have voice actors and singers for a character be different people.
@88NickC Ability to pay isn't the same as desire to pay. If Rare wasn't worth a billion dollars to Microsoft, it doesn't matter if they had it. By your reasoning, Elon Musk has automatically won every auction. Also, private companies sell to who they want to. They don't sell to the highest bidder unless that's what they want to do. They already had a working relationship with Nintendo and had no idea how Microsoft would be to work for. The heads of Rare started out as game designers, not corporate suits. So Nintendo likely wouldn't have needed to outbid MS, just offer enough to make Rare happy.

Re: Reaction: Switch 2 Needed A Partner Showcase With Pep; This Wasn't It
@Willo567 That's great and news to me. And the Wii store dates back almost as far as Steam. I think people have reasonable suspicions though that their purchases from those stores are less permanent than their purchases on Steam. And while you didn't list DSi, it also allows re-downloading but won't for long.
