Nintendo Download: 30th January (Europe)

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

Wii Fit U, hamsters that are brilliant and plenty of discounts

As is now the regular routine, European Nintendo Download fans can kick off the week with an early look at what's to come in Thursday's update. The upcoming week does only feature one new game, rounding off a quiet January for the eShop platforms, but does include a series of tempting discounts on retail and download-only games. Without further ado, let's get to it.

Wii U eShop Retail Download

Wii Fit U (Nintendo, €34.99 / £29.99) — Available from 1st February. The Wii Fit U trial offer, in which you get to keep the download for free when synchronised with a Wii Fit Meter, expires on 31st January. From that point onwards it'll shift to a standard price on the eShop, so act fast if you want to take advantage of the offer. We gave this title a strong recommendation in our Wii Fit U review.

Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts

All five of the following titles are part of the Super Indie Connection Sale that will run until 13th February — if you own any of these downloads, the others are all available at the discounted prices provided below.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams (Black Forest Games, €5.99 / £5.19 until 13th February, normally €14.99 / £12.99)

Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition (WayForward, €3.99 / £3.59 until 13th February, normally €9.99 / £8.99)

BIT.TRIP Presents: Runner 2 Future Legend of Rhythm Alien (Gaijin Games, €4.79 / £3.99 until 13th February, normally €11.99 / £9.99)

Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party (KnapNok Games, €2.79 / £2.39 until 13th February, normally €6.99 / £5.99)

Toki Tori 2+ (Two Tribes, €5.99 / £5.19 until 13th February, normally €14.99 / £12.99)

Wii U Retail Download Temporary Discount

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Capcom, €35.99 / £29.99 until 6th February, normally €59.99 / £49.99)

3DS eShop

Brilliant Hamsters (Bergsala Lightweight, €9.99 / £9.99) — The ever-growing pet-sim genre continues on the 3DS, with hamsters joining dogs, cats, horses, penguins, dinosaurs and more in a fight for your affections. You take care of your hamster's every need in this title, though it's an unremarkable effort — our review explaining why will be published in the next 24 hours.

3DS Retail Download Temporary Discount

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Capcom, €26.99 / £23.99 until 6th February, normally €44.99 / £39.99)

I know it is January, a typically slow month, but Nintendo's promise that there would not be a Software drought in 2014 really rings hollow when they can't even get anything out on the digital side, let alone retail.

A little help on weather I should get it for the Wii U or the 3DS or at all? I wouldn't get it in this sale, I prefer having a hard copy.

None for me this week but as I can see, it's actually worth my while to wait until Unepic is discounted before I purchase it. I don't mind discounts for the first week to encourage first time buyers, but it annoys me when they discount it just because it makes people buy it. Still, they do it BECAUSE it makes people buy it but I can't help but feel a little burned if they didn't offer a discount to begin with.
That said unless I can get strong recommendations from anyone here to buy Unepic? I think I'll wait until a temporary discount.

@readyletsgo Its a great game, but if you cant get past the learning curve you will hate it hence the mixed reviews.

If your new to the series I always suggest play with a buddy who knows the game or if you dont have such a friend go check out a few guides. Wii U is the way to go with the inclusion of online that the 3DS is lacking(thankfully MH4 fixes that).

I also suggest doing the digital version as loading screens between zones are slightly speed up and that can give a nice little advantage.

I try to defend Nintendo on most occasions but to not put a single thing on the wii u eshop is exceptionally stupid.
I know it's a week of sales but I own every single thing on that list already.

To not release a single vc game is strange considering there are over 1000 pal nes / snes games they could pick from even after forgeting about titles they'll never release due to licence issues and such.

hell i'd have put snes mario kart out there this week given people are in the mood for wii u mario kart and given a lack of other content they would probably make good sales with it for a few weeks.
release it too close to mario kart wiiu most people will put their money on new not retro.

I accept the direct theory could release a surprise game but i'd be even more surprised to see a direct before February so it's unlikely this week.

Doesn't work like that. Nintendo can only choose from their own games to publish, and even then, they have to go through the process of submitting it to be rated just like everyone else (it may be easier and quicker if the game has already been rated on Wii Virtual Console, I don't know). If the likes of Capcom and Konami choose not to submit certain games to Nintendo to be released on the Virtual Console, Nintendo can't do anything about it until they do. And those third parties are not going to submit all the games they ever developed to Nintendo straight away - it costs them money to get a game rated and the release schedule may mean they would pay for something but have to wait many months until it finally gets released. And no, I don't believe they currently have no games available to them for release - Nintendo must just be spreading the releases out to avoid running out of available games too quickly before new ones become available to them.

If Nintendo actually has a lot to release but is choosing not to (which I doubt- so far few third party developers have released games for the Wii U VC), that's really foolish. They released more games each week for the Wii, and they never ran out even in ~5 years.

@ThomasBW84 @Ricube - "Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party (KnapNok Games, €2.79 / £2.39 until 13th February, normally €6.99 / £5.99)"

Maybe it's too late to edit now but that normally L5.99 E6.99 game is going to be L7.99 E8.99 in a couple of weeks so that is actually a really good sale price to get the DLC for free. It's actually about the cost of the DLC for the entire game. I'll even pick it up for $3 if the US gets the sale on Thursday.

The current negativity about Nintendo's sales figures don't help either.
