YorkshireNed commented on Soapbox: Ignoring The Objectification Of Women...:

Its a difficult question. If you'd asked me when I was 18, I would have laughed at you and called on free speech and letting the buyer decide. Now as a Husband and a Father to a young daugther, with statistics about breast implants on the rise, I feel differently. These sort of images create a physical image that young people cannot live up to. Of course, the same applies to impossibly muscled heroes [which thinking back, definitely affected my self esteem as a young guy]. However, I would hate to ever see any official legal censorship being imposed. I think a discussion like this is a good way forwards and to always bring up these issues in any coverage of such games. There is a lot of Japanese culture I love [esp. Nintendo games, Japanese psychedelic rock and Japanese history] but I don't want to import the sexualisation of children

YorkshireNed commented on Mario And Zelda On Mobile Could Bring New Play...:

I think a sensible compromise would be for Nintendo to create some simple, stripped down mini games for mobiles featuring their big IPs. It would help build a bit of brand awareness and lure some more people into the cult of Nintendo. However, apapting existing classics into mobile phone format is a terrible idea. Those games need buttons and pads, not touchscreens.

YorkshireNed commented on Nintendo Confirms Major Reductions In Sales an...:

It is disturbing news. If you go to the Google News page you can see this story is making news all over the world. I know a lot of people on her don't like naysaying but this is definitely bad. Much of the media analysis is putting Nintendo's problems down to them not letting others use their IPs. I strongly diagree. I think it would cheapen the IPs and lower quality control (there is really on so much you can do with touch screen phone games). They are smart to keep these things to their own consoles. I think the main problem is the Wii U's low spec. It just didn't appeal to any of the gamers I work with. I am literally the only gamer in my entire workplace who wants a Wii U and not a Xbox One or PS4. I badly want Wii U to suceed. It would really upset me if Nintendo was reduced to being just a games publisher like Sega.

YorkshireNed commented on Talking Point: Is The Castlevania Series Finis...:

I've not voted as I'm really not sure. I love the old series but never quite made my mind up about the 3DS entry. It seemed too easy for a few hours and then suddenly a rock hard boss turned up who I struggled with and I got bored. And the music really wasn't up to the series standard. But it was kind of cool. I can't say it breaks my heart that the series isn't planning a Wii U game this year.

YorkshireNed commented on StreetPass Games Producers Tell Origins of Mii...:

I bought all the new streetpass games and love them. However, I do feel that recently streetpass has lost a bit of its sparkle with you getting 6 miis everytime you pass a wi-fi spot. I live in a small remote town and find it hard to believe that 6 other 3ds users (and always one from abroad) have really passed that wi-fi spot. It feels like its just giving me 3ds users from elsewhere. Before there used to be something more exciting and personal about streetpassing people but now it feels a bit like a big download dump. Also its now too easy to hit the 10 limit from the wi-fi spots which might block genuine streetpasses.

YorkshireNed commented on Review: 3D Ecco The Dolphin (3DS eShop):

@Asaki my thoughts exactly. The soundtrack was far better for the CD version and there were extra levels. I got through to the final boss a few times, if memory serves, but never beat the game. The final levels were insanely hard and incredibly dark. This was my game, not SOR which quickly bored me

YorkshireNed commented on PS4 and Xbox One Surpass Wii U Lifetime Sales ...:

Really sad but nor surprising. Everyone in my workplace who plays games was after these consoles. They were all drooling over the tech specs and none of them were considering Wii U. It seems with the Wii they alienated the core gamers and became viewed as something more for kids. Now, you and I know better BUT that IS how it is here. I'm getting a Wii U for Christmas but out of all the people I know, I only have 1 friend who owns one.

YorkshireNed commented on Xbox One UK Sales Set to Pass Wii U's Lifetime...:

I think the success of the Wii with the family market alienated the average gamer. At my workplace, I'm the only one talking about getting a Wii U for Xmas, everyone else is talking about XBox & PS4. I don't care, I think of myself as more of a connoisseur. I drink real ale, they drink mass produced lager full of additives. I seek out the best underground music, they watch X Factor. Still, while I may be happy, Nintendo's shareholders won't be. I am also not a naive Nintendo worshiper. I know the harsh facts

With the Wii U being so far behind the competition on tech specs, it was never going to do well with the third party developers. What we need for the Wii U are rock solid Nintendo smash hits. We need a Xenoblade Chronicles style epic JRPG. And whoever runs the download service needs sacking.

YorkshireNed commented on Nintendo Disables Swapnote's SpotPass Service ...:

Well, it is hard for me to care, I never used it anymore. Did a little but when it first came out but it was too fiddly. Really, though, did they not think that letting people draw in 3d is just encouraging them to draw a big 3d penis?

YorkshireNed commented on Nintendo Set To End Production of the Wii:

The end of an era. Not for me, though, as I've not yet got Skyward Sword or Super Mario Galaxy 2 or the Kirby games and I only just ordered The Last Story. I think it is no exaggeration to say that when they do nostalgia programmes on TV about the last decade, the Wii will always feature as the defining gaming experience of its generation.

YorkshireNed commented on Nintendo Download: 26th September (Europe):

As I have a 3ds and a Wii, there's definitely nothing for me this week. I wish they would up the release rate a little bit. I mean, the Wii seems to have come to the end of it's VC life pretty much now and that was by no means a game library that reached it's full potential.

YorkshireNed commented on Microsoft: If You're Backwards Compatible, You...:

It's a baffling statement. I use my 3ds to play DS. I use my Wii to play Gamecube. When I go Wii U, I'll carry on with my Wii games. It's not my main problem with the new Xbox, though. It's the creepy notion that the hi-res camera, the microphone and the motion detector and the internet connection all have to stay on - yuck!

YorkshireNed commented on Smartphones And Tablets To Be "Primary Screen ...:

I'm afraid it really is quite likely that console ownership is going to go the way of vinyl records, a niche for the discerning customer. The big warning sign will be when all new TVs are wirelessly connectable to smartphones. Once that happens, we'll be in a very different world when it comes to gaming.

YorkshireNed commented on The Monster Hunter Tri Servers Will be Shutdow...:

I bought the game two years ago but only really started playing online when I heard it was going to be shut down. The single player campaign has all the same quests I've encountered in the online version (though I only got to HR 19) and you can pause it

I had this on CPC....seem to remember hitting stale mate on my 10th alien. Wonder if it was a bug or just me failing. Remembered loving Purple Saturn Day waaaaaay more....that was one of the best looking CPC games.

YorkshireNed commented on Wii U UK Price Reaches New Low As HMV Slashes ...:

If I had the money, I'd be tempted....but I don't have a HD TV yet and feel that might be the next upgrade for me. Still got 3 more Wii games that I haven't yet bought and feel I need to get them first before I relegate the Wii.

Also, isn't HMV, you know, closing? The store near me is. This might be a closing down sale deal....

YorkshireNed commented on Reaction: Doom and Gloom Merchants on Wii U Be...:

I don't think it's NIntendo's fault but the market is changing, so I think it is now clear there will be no repeat of the Wii's success. However, Nintendo does have a loyal audience who appreciate both the recurring characters, the sense of continuity and the innovation of Nintendo's consoles. Whether or not that is sufficient is something only Nintendo knows.
