Re: Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Revision For Europe

SirLink

It's funny how "consumer-friendly innovation" suddenly becomes possible the moment it's required by law. Especially considering this particular "innovation" used to be the norm.

Now we just need mobile manufacturers to catch up with what they were already doing 15 years ago.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (30th May)

SirLink

A couple of days ago, your Mina the Hollower review got me so hyped that I decided to pick it up straight away... only to be stopped by the eShop because it was still too early. If anything, the wait just made me even more excited, so I grabbed it yesterday and haven't been able to put it down since — aside from stopping to get some sleep. So what am I playing, you ask? Mina The Hollower, obviously... but also Indiana Jones and the Great Circle!

Re: The Witcher 3 Is Getting A New Expansion, But Not On Switch

SirLink

That's annoying, but only up to a point. To be honest, although I loved the Witcher 3 to pieces, the Blood & Wine DLC wasn't nearly as fun.

DLCs are supposed to surprise gamers just as games do, but they often fail to do so because they really try to extend the experience people had with the core game, sometimes a bit desperately.

That's why I understand CDPR if they want to focus on the Witcher 4 right now. If they really want to do something meaningful for this title, they should really prioritise releasing a Switch 2 update, even if it initially only includes higher-resolution textures. But it's really up to them to decide if it's worth the effort.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Yoshi And The Mysterious Book?

SirLink

I believe many people nowadays mistake good games for technically well-made games, but we should never forget it has always been and still is all about fun. Besides, this has nothing to do with the difficulty level, as one of the key features of Nintendo's games is often the "you can't access a tougher level till you see it all and beat it".
So, although I never played it, the reactions give me the impression that this is the kind of game that makes you ask yourself "ok, it's all cute and well made and all, but where's the fun?"

Re: Best Switch 2 Ports - The Most Impressive Third-Party Games On Nintendo Switch 2

SirLink

At a time when the most interesting games being ported over to Switch 2 are actually 3rd-party titles — aside from the usual BotW and TotK — I think people are going to ask more and more often what the best 3rd-party games specifically ported to the system are, at least until Nintendo drops a real masterpiece, which — let's be honest — we haven't really seen yet.
Anyway, no offense, but some titles feel like they were forcefully shoehorned into the list above.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (23rd May)

No gaming for me this w/e unfortunately, I'm going to be busy for two full days, with early starts and trying to get as much sleep as possible. In fact, I'll barely have any time to sleep. I'm going to recover on Monday with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and probably also beat FFV PR tho.

Re: Opinion: Replaying Games Is Better Than Playing Games

SirLink

Generally speaking, I don't really agree with this take, since a lot of the magic is gone once the surprise wears off. That's also why I rarely use NSO.

That said, replaying games nowadays is harder than ever when we've all got massive backlogs full of games we paid good money for. Modern games also aren't like the ones from the '90s, which you could finish in a few days at most.
To be honest, some of the games mentioned here never really made me want to replay them anyway, including Wonder and DKC Returns.

Still, this article did remind me that I still haven't tried the Switch 2 version of TotK. I'd like to get around to that before the end of the year with a proper second playthrough, even if my completionist tendencies will probably make it a huge time sink.

Re: Round Up: The Final Previews Are In For The Adventures Of Elliot: The Millennium Tales

SirLink

I managed to play the demo on Steam during a short trip since I only had my laptop with me, and I loved it. I'm really excited for the full game.

Yeah, the constant chatter can get a bit annoying, but honestly that's the only real issue I've had with it so far. I think this is the sort of game you’re meant to enjoy at a slower pace — kind of the “Square Enix way”. If you just relax and take your time with it instead of rushing through everything, even the dialogues start feeling less tiring.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Yoshi And The Mysterious Book

SirLink

It's hilarious that there's an entire article about other magazines' reviews just because some people were annoyed by a mixed score here. And people acting as if IGN is unreliable? That's the cherry on the cake. Honestly, if you want to spare yourself the hassle, find a reviewer whose tastes match yours, and actually read the reviews instead of just checking the score. Makes picking games you'll enjoy much easier.

Re: Review: Yoshi And The Mysterious Book (Switch 2) - Charming Enough, But Ultimately Lacklustre

SirLink

People used to love Nintendo's games, but not just because they made them. Seeing how some people reacted to this review makes me think it's the other way around now.
To me, "lacklustre" perfectly describes the way far too many modern games feel these days, so I have no problem believing the reviewer and praising his honesty. That's what the famous "negativity" must be about... not.
And really, it's not like a single review is going to make or break your decision. At most, it might just make you hold off for a bit and check out a few more opinions before buying. So I honestly don't see the problem with an unpopular opinion existing.

Re: Hands On: The Classic Zelda Formula Is In Safe Hands With 'The Adventures Of Elliot'

SirLink

An ALttP-like action-adventure with Octopath Traveler-style graphics and without the most annoying part of RPGs, like enemies suddenly popping out every N steps? I'm totally sold. It's like being told "here's the best pizza in the world, and you don't even have to queue for it".
I bet Square-Enix has been craving to make a game like this for ages.
The long dialogues are a small downside, but that's the Japanese style, I guess.

Re: BioShock Creator: Switch 2 Proves Graphics Have Reached "Diminishing Returns"

SirLink

I largely agree with him. After all, a boring game is still boring, even with photorealistic graphics, and great games are usually remembered together with their strong artistic style.

By the way, Cyberpunk 2077 might look like an exception to Levine's statement, as it's successful but still aiming for realism, but it really isn't. It has its own strong artistic direction (the cyberpunk aesthetics full of neon lights), while the world itself is stylised, and it's just fun to play anyway.

Re: "You're Offloading Creativity To An Algorithm" - Stardew Valley Creator Stands Firm Against AI

SirLink

I feel like the gaming industry will become a bit like the music industry. Huge publishers will make more and more money thanks to AI, just like music companies profit from mass-produced music, while indie games as a genuine form of creative expression will become harder and harder to find. It's similar to how some of the best music often comes from unknown artists.
Seeing ConcernedApe standing against AI is no surprise for me, since he's also a musician.
