After a more than successful product launch with the Nintendo Switch and 15 notable years at Nintendo of America, it comes as something of a shock as it is revealed that Reggie Fils-Aime will soon be retiring from the company. With almost 13 years under his belt as President and COO, Reggie has become something of a household name with gamers across the world and has led Nintendo of America through many important transitions throughout the years. His last day at NoA will be 15th April.
The appropriately named Doug Bowser will take over the reins from Reggie. Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo Co., Ltd. had to say this on the transition:
I really appreciate everything Reggie has done for Nintendo. Inside and outside our company, Reggie is known as an exceptional leader. We are grateful that he is leaving the business in good shape with strong momentum. While we will miss him and we wish him the very best in his retirement, we are also pleased to have such an able successor ready to step into that role. Doug Bowser and the rest of the team will ensure a seamless transition and continued momentum for Nintendo.
Here's what Reggie had to say about this shock announcement:
Nintendo owns a part of my heart forever. It’s a part that is filled with gratitude – for the incredibly talented people I’ve worked with, for the opportunity to represent such a wonderful brand, and most of all, to feel like a member of the world’s most positive and enduring gamer community. As I look forward to departing in both good health and good humor, this is not ‘game over’ for me, but instead ‘leveling up’ to more time with my wife, family and friends.
Incoming NoA president Doug Bowser added to this:
It has been my great fortune to work with and be mentored by Reggie for four years at Nintendo of America. And rest assured, we will continue to build on his work to evolve and expand our brand, furthering Nintendo’s global mission of creating smiles. There are millions more of those to come.
It's a massive surprise that Reggie has chosen to retire at this stage of his career, but we at Nintendo Life wish him all the best with his future endeavours. We also congratulate Mr Bowser on his appointment, we're sure he'll continue to drive the business forward over the coming years and we look forward to all the inevitable memes.
Let us know what you think of this surprising announcement with a comment below.

my body was not Reggie for this news
Reggie will be sorely missed.
My body was not ready to hear this.
Really though, Happy Retirement Reggie! Now he'll have time to replay the entire Metroid series.
NOOOO Reggie NOOOO D: D:
They could replace him with a puppet and no one would be able to tell the difference.
I nominate Arlo.
Reggie, thank you for all the work you've done, the memories you've helped create, the memes you've generated. May your body be forever ready. I know that mine is.
sad to see him go. but he does deserve a great retirement. 👍
Sooo...Bowser is taking on Mario's owners? Interesting.
I have a lot of time for Reggie. I think he did a good job. Hope he has a long and happy retirement.
Re: Mr Bowser. His name always cracks me up.
But, we need new Reggie memes every year. T.T
I have been waiting for this day for years. Reggie was a complete joke and one of the weakest NOA presidents they had. Hopefully now they can get someone to focus on what gamers want, not ridiculous gimmicks like Labo and waggle controls.
Nah nah nah nah nah hey hey hey goodbye!!!
It was Doug Bowser's destiny to become President of Nintendo USA.
Now for someone called Mario to take his old job.
Wow did not see this coming. Still thanks for all the good moments Reggie , and wow this feels weird to say but the best of luck to Mr Bowser
It's an end of an era, I will miss Reggie wholeheartedly...
Bowser, give us MOTHER 3
Aww, as much as I couldn’t stand his PR speak at times, the guy is a fixture and I’ll miss seeing him around! Best wishes, Reggie!
Wow, end of an era.
His name is Reggie. He's about kickin' ass, he's about takin' names, and Nintendo is about makin' games... but they're doing it without Reggie! My body is not ready for firepower... I mean news of this magnitude.
@RickD I, too, would probably be stressed in his shoes if I saw the superior specs, the acclaimed controller and even some big name third party exclusives... outsold into next Saturday by a competition that doubled as a budget DVD player. Far be it from me to underrate PS2's library and merits, but everyone mocking Nintendo for "gimmicks unrelated to hardcore gaming" these days would do well to remember how they lost a lot of ground to one.
I loved how much fun Reggie had in his role as head of Nintendo of America
@incrediblegloves Damn you beat me to it
no ((((((((( why? he was the best
Nintendo's values have remained mostly the same, but we've seen a major shift in company management the last few years. We sadly lost the company president in 2015, now the president of Nintendo of America is stepping down, and didn't the president of Nintendo of Europe also take a different company position a couple years back? And I'm sure it's inevitable they'll fire the president of Nintendo of Russia. What a change of power.
Thank you for fifteen years of kicking ass, taking names, and making games.
I'm devastated😢. hope he'll have a good rest though.
I press A and F. An absolute legend, mr. Fils-Aime.
Well, this was unexpected...
Should be interesting to see how King Bowser runs things.
@Tasuki Yeah the head of the US branch is responsible for the technology and products developed internally ag the parent company in Japan.
Okay. Yup. Good job there bud. Haven't you got a site to run or something? I know its not your job as you're not responsible for what happens behind closed doors, but I think it's fair as clearly you are the responsible one.
I always liked Reggie and he'll be sorely missed, even if you didn't like him, it's undeniable he was very iconic.
Happy retirement Reggie, all the best and I hope you'll enjoy it thoroughly!
How long has this Doug fella worked for Nintendo?
Surely he was hired for his surname alone whatever talent he has
Gonna miss Reggie and his colorful Direct/Treehouse/E3 presentations. Bowser, you've got some tough shoes to fill
F in the chat for Reggie...
Well heres to years of Bowser puns. Reggie was fun this is sad news indeed
Good for him to retire when he wants to rather than working himself in to the ground. If you can do it then why not?
The end of an era.
Remember how good it was before.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NcDZmmu9FM
@Tasuki does Nintendo OF AMERICA got to decide anything Nintendo (japan) releases????
Thanks for everything he's done, and best of luck and health to him henceforth!
Damn, that's really sad to hear. Been a fan of Reggie even since his epic E3 2004 debut. Nintendo press conferences, etc, are just not going to be the same without his presence.
I wish him nothing but the best of luck.
He was a competent, if awkward figurehead. Nintendo can do better.
Warmest thanks to RF-A, always grateful.
Warmest welcome to BOWSER!!!!!
NOOOO REGGIE NOOOOOO
He will be missed such an awesome, but can we appreciate the fact that the next guy's name is Bowser??
Now if Major Nelson can retire it would be great, really not a fan of that guy
So.... Is Bowser inside story about his rise into the corporate ladder?
Bowser: You might have won against me in all of your games, Mario, but I've won THE game.
Wow. I audibly gasped at the news. Best of luck to him, I thought he was pretty cool.
No one will be able to live up to the sheer force of Reg-
-oh, so the guys name is 'Bowser'? No, that works just as well.
So, when do we get to start the mindless speculation of how he's going to go about announcing the Mother 3 HD remake?
Reggie's body is ready for retirement!
This is a bit of a shock announcement, but it's an understandable one. As a fan, I'll miss him, but I wish Reggie a wonderful retirement all the same.
In other news, Bowser has announced his take over of
the Mushroom KingdomNintendo.I kind of missed out on his whole thing but best of luck I guess.
Brazil taken over by a dictator, Trump takes America, and now Bowser runs Nintendo??
I'm torn.
On the one hand I always thought of him as just a figurehead with no real power, and his several demotions show that,
but,
it's Reggie, so better the devil you know.
Weird he would retire mid-April and not wait for E3, but I'm sure he has his reasons.
Going to be a really strange E3 without him, for better or worse.
I'm missing him already... =(
Best of luck to Reggie, I'll certainly miss him. He's probably the first "executive-type" person that I actually learned the name of, and for good reason. Great job over many years.
PS: I was expecting way more mean spirited comments towards Reggie from clueless people, but I'm happily surprised by just a few ones. Good job NL commenters!
As much as I call him a tool this makes me sad as he has a great personality. Nintendo has now lost 2 great personalities over the last few years. Now we will get a bunch of behind the scenes Presidents and I'm not sure I like that.
Next week running for president
Good to hear that he’s healthy and will get to enjoy his retirement. Video was nicely done.
Big changes at NOA.
Bowser taking charge? Please tell me there's a Bowser Jr taking a vice president role!
@Tasuki - So much edge, my dear pudding cup, seems like someone is grieving over such a little shift.
.....dang. Dude's been doing a tremendous job at running NOA. Sad to see him go, but wishin him the best. Hope his body is ready for what comes next for him.
I see Bowser found a way to our world and is wearing human skin! Mario and the princess need to be informed!
Oh man, that's kinda sad. Reggie was so good at this complete BS job.
Also, Lol. I bet the other candidates who were going up against a guy called Bowser weren't feeling too confident. I bet Nintendo loved the PR bonus they'd get from that.
It's hard to remember a time when Reggie wasn't such a prominent face of Nintendo. He was a lot of fun and you can tell his love of Nintendo is true and genuine. It's not just a paycheque for him. He will be missed but at least he gets to enjoy a much-deserved retirement. And I have to say, with a name like Doug Bowser running Nintendo, the fun will just continue!! Life-long Nintendo gamer here & will be until my dying day! Congratulations on a lifetime of achievements, Reggie....and thank you for bringing a smile to everyone's face!
Oh boy, when things in 3D become reality:
Funny thing is, I actually was discussing about Reggie retiring from Nintendo when playing an online game just 2 days ago, man I didn't expect this. All the best for this man and his future endeavours.
He will be missed. Nintendo without Iwata and now Reggie, is a new era.
And he said NCL, not NoJ, so please, educate yourself regarding Nintendo in Japan.
Enjoy your well-deserved retirement Regginator!
You're an absolute legend and we will all remember you in the decades to come.
@Marios-love-child he's been around for a good bit. maybe the past 5-7 years, though quite honestly I forget what role he's played. I think he's fairly significant to the company, though.
Well good luck to him and good luck to him too! (heheh)
He was more than just a guy in a role, he was as much a character as the ones Nintendo create. He'll be fondly remembered, best of luck to Bowser, those are some big shoes to fill.
This is a sad day...
That's all the time he's got. He's gotta get back to playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf on his Nintendo 3DS.
Absolute legend. From kicking ass and taking names to the success of the Wii and DS to the Switch we’re all currently enjoying. Reggie was an icon, a legend and most importantly a great person.
Where's the one guy who was hating on Reggie all the time?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE, was it?
@victordamazio
Holy moly that was brilliant.
@LUIGITORNADO
F@%k yeah. Arlo rules.
Let the dude go out in style. Give him one more direct to drop the mother of all announcements (see what I did there) drop the mic and leave. Best of luck to an industry icon.
Take the money and run into the sunset Reggie.
Of all the overpaid, disingenuous, PR speak fat-cats, you were the most entertaining. Now go, your beach body is ready...
@OorWullie
I'm actually more worried for Bowser stepping in because of Bowsette...
Will he be able to stand it?
@RickD Not playing DVDs was the whole point for Wii and the course it mapped - seeking own special ways to enhance the experience instead of keeping up with the Joneses. And from what I've seen, NGC library was quite a banquet menu in itself. Wii one outshines it largely thanks to the aforesaid enhancements whereas the range of offerings that had made PS2 library more interesting somehow wasn't enough to let PS3 rest on the brand laurels.
@Devlind Super Bowser Conquest for Nintendo Switch. You heard it here first.
Tnx for everything reggie loved it!
I guess his body was ready, for retirement.
Honestly I'm kinda sad, but I wish him the best.
Just wait till he announces his run for presidentcy He is only retiring so he can focus on the campaign trail.
REGGIE 2020
Didn't think it would but this brought a wee tear to my eye.
@victordamazio
IT WAS A PROPHECY!
Sorry but never liked him. Fair play to him retiring this early. Wish I could.
Hope Bowser will step up
If you think about it Reggie hasn’t had much camera time since E3. I hope he’s well. Also curious to see if Bowser will take a similar on camera role, although that seems to have been taken over by Koizumi recently.
I liked Reggie, sad to see him go.
He went out in Reggie-Style in that video. I was always a fan. Thanks!
Think this confirmes Reggie will be in smash
The announcement is only a surprise if it surprised you. People come and go, and for those that are surprised I guess its the sudden departure close to the announcement rather than the retirement its self.
It is good that he leaves in good health, and on good terms. To me this suggests a big'ish announcement coming soon and the new guy will get in at the start. Maybe a hardware announcement.
Good for him! He’s made his mark , been a good boss and leader, provided us fans with memes and corporate jargon to make fun of. Es probably made some good cash and now wants to spend time with his fam.
@Tasuki better than the trash Sony promotes.
@MushHill_Act1-1
Yeah I'd heard his name mentioned once or twice before but wasn't sure if he's been around Since the first mario games featuring Bowser or just more recently.. Thank you for clearing that up.
He must be highly thought of to bag reggie's job
Although he wasn't as good as Minoru Arakawa, he did a good job nonetheless. Let's see how Bowser runs things now.
He had a real good run. I wish him the best.
This cant be happening (( The other guy's name is freaking BOWSER, how can he leave us in his hands!
My body is not ready:(
Reggie Fils a mie seemed like he was probably a fun guy. Will miss seeing him on e3 and such. Best of luck in your retirement.
@nhSnork in retrospect it was. However back then it felt like a huge drought.
Kinda mixed on this. He came out of the gate acting like he was ready to throw haymakers (here to “kick ass and take names”), but does anyone besides me remember those face-smackingly cringy “Ask Reggie” segments IGN did with him every week?
Matt Cassamassina: Reggie, NoA barely had anything to show at E3 and hasn’t announced a GameCube exclusive in months. Can you give us an idea of what’s to come, like anything?
Reggie: Did you know about our great exclusives like Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime and Luigi’s Mansion? You can find them in a store near you!
MC: Reggie, Nintendo is struggling with an image of being too kiddy or not seriously enough for enthusiastic gamers. Does Nintendo have any strategy to combat this?
Reggie: We published Eternal Darkness and Metroid Prime, which are on shelves as we speak. By the way, have I mentioned you can now get your own GBA for the low, low price of $100? What’s more “cool” than that?
@IBeAGamer
That response was inappropriate.
His statement was fundamentally flawed. But you should rebut that with facts, not insults.
Fact #1 Labo is only one focus of a hundred different focuses, the vast majority of which gamers on this site do want (hybrid console, Zelda, Mario, Metroid Prime, etc)
Fact #2 Waggle isnt a focus. Like, at all. Analog gyro hybrid is somewhat of a focus, but that's a good thing.
3 NoA doesnt decide what Nintendo's focus is anyways.
These 3 facts exemplify the error of his original post. These are what you should be responding with. Insulting Sony just gives his statement legitimacy by comparison
I hate this, man Reggie will be missed!
I wish we had just gotten 1 final Nintendo Direct with him, just to give him a proper goodbye
Thanks Reggie for a ton of great memories and gaming experiences!
Always disliked Reggie. Everything he says comes across like he's never out of PR/Spin mode. Let's be honest, ever since the mid 90s, all the decision making at Nintendo has been done in Japan.
well not sure how good he was as president. Maybe Japan hold him back on some things. He can become a successful nintendo comedian youtuber.
My body wasn’t ready.
No body was ready.
@Peach64 With Nintendo being a Japanese company, that's not strange.
@JaxonH Jim Ryan was a president. Therefore Sony has promoted trash.
Happy retirement Reggie!
Sad to hear. The man was a real personality and i think he will be hard to replace. However, i cant hold it against the man for wanting to enjoy more time with his family, hopefully he will still make a cameo from time to time!!
NOOOO! Good bye Reggie, you will always be considered a legend among Nintendo fans
Aww... No! I really like Reggie. He's been the 'western' face of company for me since I returned to gaming in the 00's. Best wishes, big fella.
What do Reggie and Mars rover Opportunity have in common? About 15 good years.
Seriously though, I liked the goodbye video. I didn't always love his PR babble, but he's been a fixture and a familiar face for SOOO LONG. 2004 right? The year the DS launched. Hits me right in the nostalgia.
Reggie has said a few beautiful words on Twitter regarding his retirement https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/1098666321473024000
What?!
My body is not ready to hear that. 😫
Well good for him he gets to retire so early.
Doubt Doug Bowser can be any better at developing lasting relationships with our big studios. He will just be another apologist like Reggie was.
Nintendo needs a "Kaz Hirai" or "Satya Nadella" in the USA. But will never happen - those types of people want to be CEOs in the end. NOA is a corporate dead end.
@Tasuki
"Hopefully now they can get someone to focus on what gamers want, not ridiculous gimmicks like Labo and waggle controls."
Did someone really hate with LABO and motion control ? 😒
Cheerio Reggie! Enjoy your retirement!
I don’t feel great about this one gamers
NoA hasn't really got any influence at all, except some localisation and censoring so it doesn't really matter, but it's always sad to see a living meme leave.
I liked him enough.
they REALLY need a whole new team at NOJ.
@Tasuki You can't always have what you want.
I was expecting Agramonte to troll us with some idiotic irrelevant statement yet @Tasuki managed to post something even more stupid. Off to Push Square troll
I'll admit, that photo of Miyamoto, Iwata and Reggie together made me shed a tear.
@IBeAGamer
Whether or not that's the case, its completely irrelevant as a counter-argument. Like someone saying "you suck" and you respond with "ya, well you suck more". Its just not a good argument.
Reason I'm saying this is because I dont agree with his comment. And when we have facts on our side, there's no reason not to use them.
@Agramonte
"Doubt Doug Bowser can be any better at developing lasting relationships with our big studios. He will just be another apologist like Reggie was."
Er... What?! 😒
He was a guy you either loved or hated, but no matter what side you were on, he always made an impression.
I wish him well, good for him to retire so early. Best to enjoy your family and friends while you're still healthy; too many people don't get that pleasure unfortunately.
I'm late to the collection of Bowser surname remarks but here it goes:
"I think Doug Bowser was promoted purely for marketing reasons".
I'm sorry, but I wish Reggie the best for his retirement. Have fun!!
Best wishes, Reggie. Here's to hoping I can retire at 57 lol. But seriously, life is always tougher than people give you credit for, and I'm sure he worked his butt off. You earned it!
Regend.
Absorute.
Fire Regg.....oh wait.
Not surprised to see some venom in the comments, it makes it easier to spot the clueless.
Born to Haitian immigrants in the Bronx, grew up to be the American face of a huge Japanese company. Made his $$$, and now set off to enjoy life. Dang, we should all be so lucky. Personally, I expect him spend much time designing MM2 levels and uploading them for us all to play.
He was a great president and face of nintendo, but I'm not buying the retirement story. Guys like this can't quit the game. I'm guessing Apple....
Happy retirement Reggie! One of the good guys 😀
R.I.P. to the "Fire Reggie!!" meme.
@John_Koshiro Anybody named Peach working at NoA should be really worried
I'm going to miss this guy. He has been the president of N.o.A. for almost the entirety of my time as a Nintendo fan and he brought quite a bit of fun through some legendary quotes and corporate decisions.
I wish him and the branch good luck.
I have really mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I generally didn't like Reggie overall...his empty PR garbage was forced and non-committal at all times. I realize it was his role, but he was also too politician-like.
On the other hand, he was part of the old guard "fun" Nintendo of Iwata-Miyamoto-Reggie. Bowser's a new generic corporate figure. And this odd and sudden timing strikes me as a forced exit allowing him to save face, and reminds me of this new investor-driven corporate restructuring of Nintendo going on in the Furukawa era. All the moves going on seems to be aligned to make Nintendo ever more generic a capital gains vehicle without the charm and character of the quaint company we know. While I wasn't a Reggie fan, this move as a seemingly forced move seems like a more to make things even more "faceless" in the modern Tim Cook sense of the word.
I fear, as of today, there is no longer a distinguishable difference between Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. Or even Apple.
@embison
"Anybody named Peach working at NoA should be really worried."
ROFL
🤣🤣🤣
Bowser will "Kidnap" every Peaches inside NoA HQ.
@LUIGITORNADO Hmm... I've never been so torn between the like and dislike buttons.
As I get older I started hearing these kinds of news. First Yamauchi then Iwata. Now Reggie retires. I am sad that some of my childhood heroes, who provided experiences that shaped who I am, are going.
That's called life my friends.
I am really grateful for so many great memories linked to these people.
I'll definitely miss Reggie, but I am excited to see how Bowser'll change NoA. Hopefully they can be given a little more freedom.
It was time. It was definitely time.
If my net worth was $23 million, I’d retire also even if it meant leaving my awesome job at Nintendo! 😁😁
He retired because of the Metroid delay.
just kidding, sad to hear him leaving but still he has done a great job connecting to the fans! Thank you for that reggie!
When i read Bowser took over i seriously thought NL made a joke (bowser from mario lol)
Reggie 😭😭😭
Noooooooooo
Who is Doug Bowser?
@NEStalgia I hear you, but a lot of assumptions are baked into what you're saying there. I hope that's not the case here.
Regardless of whether he was just a PR puppet or not, Reggie held a special place in my heart, and it is with a heavy heart that I watch him leave.
People can say what they want, but he was goofy and fun. He brought fun to the fore, and I worry how Doug Bowser will fare when he has to fill these shoes.
This news hit me pretty hard, but he's leaving the company in Bowser's hands, and in a incredible state. Thank you for all the moments you gave us Reggie. Let's hope they give him one last Direct before he leaves.
Still ugly crying here... I started following Nintendo as a fan around 2003 and then Reggie came along at E3 2004. Thank you for putting a smile on my face since that day!
@Reignmaker True, but it's not hard to connect the dots when they already form a line...
I guess instead of "My body is ready", now it'll be "SHOWTIME!"
He seems so young to retire. But I guess when I think of the fact that I was still in high school fifteen years ago, he has been in that position for quite some time.
I will miss his sass. Who else is straight-up going to ask people who haven't purchased a 3DS yet "What is wrong with you?"?
Happy retirement Reggie and thank you for your support of the GameCube, GBA, Wii, DS, 3DS, and Nintendo Switch in our side of the region.
@sword_9mm lol, what is NoJ? NoJ don't even exist.
Did you watched the video? Reggie himself called NCL.
Don't be dumb.
Much respect to this great man. Thank you for everything!
Time sure goes by doesn't it? I wish Reggie much success in his future endeavors. Thanks for all the memories-- The ups, downs, frustrations, and surprises. Hope we meet again!
As for Bowser... this can't get any more ironic and fun lol
"Okay, that's all the time I've got. I've gotta get back to playing Animal Crossing New Leaf with my wife and kids."
We stormed Bowser’s castles for so many years. Now he’s storming ours. Happy retirement Reg. Be well!
This world no longer has meaning. Good luck, Reggie!
@daebiya I'm Brazilian and I think you understand very little about Brazil. It was an unfortunate comparison in relating this news to politics.
Miss you already, Reg
I salute you, Reggie! Thank you for playing!
Thank you for all you did Reggie <3 Enjoy retirement!
I wish we all could retire at 57.
@MS7000 It’s now mandatory that King Bowser’s Theme (Mario 64) be played each time the new president steps in front of a Direct camera
Was never a huge fan of Reggie but at least he had personality. One by one the faces of Nintendo are disappearing. Was hard enough watching Iwata go. :-/
@NEStalgia We still have the Treehouse, Miyamoto and Aonuma
I always liked Reggie. He was a nice figure for Nintendo. Good luck for the rest Reg.
Thanks for everything Reggie!
Reggie at 11:30 AM: "So Doug, the big announcement is coming today, want crack a couple beers in my office and watch Twitter light up?"
Doug: "Sure, what is your bet on response time for memes? Mine is within one hour of the announcement."
Reggie: "Ahhhh Dougie boy, welcome to the big time. Give it about four minutes...."
Dang, I like Reggie. Hope he has a great time with friends and family.
After he brings us Mother 3.
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?
Everyone retires how they go about it thier choosing or Nintendo's choosing.
@Elvie Wow. Your comment reminded me of the fact that's he's been a part of Nintendo since before I even knew what the company was. It's crazy that another person who was there though the Wii (my first console), DS, and everything else until now is leaving.
Goodbye Reggie, we will miss you and wish you luck on your future endeavors.
The Reggienator will be missed, indeed. Now no-body is ready...
My heart is not ready. Thanks, Reggie!
Enjoy your retirement Reggie your earn it.
Bye Felicia ;D
I'm kidding!!! xD Seriously though, for all the jokes made with and about him, to do with his name or otherwise - he will be missed. I guess we don't have our Nintendo trio anymore - but it had to come sometime.
Dang, did not expect this at all. We'll all miss you Reggie, thanks for all the smiles and memories you've given us, and most of all, thanks for making our bodies ready! Even if they'll never be as ready as yours! Enjoy your retirement, big guy!
Now, let's see how Doug Bowser will do. Best of luck, hope YOUR body is ready to step into Reggie's shoes!
@Tasuki I think you know little about how Nintendo works, since NoA’s president has little to say about how the company is run or what games/projects are made. He’s just a PR person.
Besides, I’m very glad Nintendo keeps doing all the weird things they do instead of trying to become a twin to the twins. I bless them for that.
I'm gonna start calling Marios Bowser, Doug.
NoBODY was ready for this announcement.
Sayonara, Reggie. Thanks for your efforts!
Noooooooo ... we (Well, I assume most of us) will miss yooooouuuu😭😭 ... hmmm, I don't know this Mr. Bowser🤔🤔🤔
My body wasn't ready =(. If nothing else, Reggie brought personality and presence to a corporation notorious for being stuffy, disconnected, and reserved. He was a breath of fresh air in many regards. When I reconnected with Nintendo in the mid-2000's Iwata and Reggie were the faces I came to know and love. Just seeing them got me excited. Now both are gone....good luck to him.
@Tasuki that response was pretty classless given the overall atmosphere of this thread .....and it show's you are clueless and just negative. If you're a fan of Nintendo, you should know by now that the decisions are made Kyoto, not Redmond. Come on man....
So long Reggie. I’m actually sad about this. Even tho at times I thought you were a puppet and full of you no what lol. Enjoy retirement!
@Antraxx777 yeah, and Koizumi. Those are the last threads of the Nintendo we knew. But once they leave, sooner than id hope, it'll be left with a corporate shell
Guys, guys, you're missing the bigger picture here. His retirement means his tenure at Nintendo can now be immortalized in digital form..
REGGIE FIGHTER FOR SMASH DLC CONFIRMED!!?
Reggie seems like a genuinely good person. His gregarious, cheerful presence will be missed. Large shoes to fill for his successor.
Reggie is taking the starting over development of Metroid Prime 4 a little harder than I'd expect.
YALL IM LITERALLY CRYING..................
I am honestly worried. He is so young but I wonder if this retirement is due to some kind of serious health problem they don't want to announce publicly... I hope this news isn't followed up with a report of his death in 6 months... D:
I mean, it could just be a desire to spend more time with friends and family, but he is only 57 years old. That's really young to retire. My father retired around that age, but only because his health was rapidly deteriorating.
Please would someone tell me where the background music is from. Is it Breath of the Wild?
My body was not reggie to hear this news. You the best reggie.
Ok i watch the video and. ..... sad as hell.
Okay, having someone named Bowser running Nintendo can't be a good thing! 😱 Nintendo is in trouble!
Great guy!
I predict a huge Nintendo direct before he goes!
Reggie was a great president, every time he announced something in a direct it made the game sound even more fun than it actually was especially with the skits he acted in. that would've been funny if Bill took the spot since it did feel like he was taking more and more spotlight every year lol
@Heavyarms55 It might not be much to take at face value, but he did say in the video that he's leaving in good health. I honestly think he just wants to kick back. He's been in the industry before his
gig at Nintendo, so it's honestly a well deserved break.
I hope we see some positive changes.
I hope Reggie has an amazing retirement and his life brings him as much joy as he has brought to others. Thank you Mr Fils-Aime.
Great man. Really hope this isn't health related but they're keeping on the D as he really is quite young to retire. Wish him all the best in his future.
looks at calendar
We're a little ways away from April Fool's, yet!!! Oh man. But it is retirement — most people slaving paycheck-to-paycheck while others take and take can only dream of that day. Congrats Reggie!
And welcome BOWSER! MWAHAHAHA
This is soooo good! He's a bit creepy, and I never got the reach around all the Nintendo fans wanted to give him.
@Not_Soos Not to mention Damon Baker getting poached by Microsoft
@ParamitePunk That crossed my mind too but Mr. Iwata was very open about his health. I doubt Reggie would keep something like that a secret. He even specifically mentioned that he is in good health in the announcement
EDIT: @Heavyarms55
Goong to miss the guy. He's been a pretty solid Pres for the American branch. Remember, this guy was responsible for some off the good relations Nintendo has with some of the 3rd party developers like Ubisoft (putting Starfox in Starlink? Why didn't Ubi think of that from the getgo?)
This is a crying shame. Even if his influence on the grander scheme of things was minimal, I still enjoyed seeing him in videos.
I will miss the flair he brings to the Nintendo presentations
@Rodan2000 I thought the same thing. They have to send him off in style. I think we’ll get an April Direct and announcement no one is expecting
My Little Pony Friendship is Magic (4 Generation) will end this year; PS Vita worldwide (Japan mainly) will cease production this year; and now Reggie Film will retire of be President of Nintendo of America.
Really this year will be the year of Farewells and Transformations...
@SakuraHaruka Not to mention it's also the end of the How to Train your Dragon film franchise, and the last Star Wars sequel film, and the last game in Kingdom Hearts' Xehanort saga
@nhSnork other then a DVD player, the big thing gamecubexwaa missing that both ps2 and Xbox/halo) did right was the birth of home console multiplayer online gaming. It was the first gen that console gaming was almost on par with pc, and the GameCube just didn’t have a “halo” caliber game to compete with pc/ps2/Xbox. GameCube was a great flop that Nintendo just didn’t really learn from their mistakes. They just went another whole direction. And gaming is better off for it. Ds/Wii/switch. Far better then what Xbox, 360, x1 has done, which is just be a watered down pc for your living room.
@ALinkttPresent
Yes, This is sad, but we must accept that a whole beginning, will have an end, even that we would like it to be for a longer time, but it does not mean the final end, it is simply a change to something new and that what ends will not be forever, It will always be present in our memories and lives.
Retiring on my birthday... WHY REGGIE?!?!
@Tasuki Remember when I told you on PS that you make troll comments over here? Exhibit A. Someone should edit your comment because you're not being very sensitive about someone retiring from their job
Awwwwww! Reggie will be missed. Out of the 3 console manufacturers he is the most likable CEO in my opinion.
@Tasuki your a complete joke troll and you do realize he doesnt make all the decisions.
@nate83km another dumb troll go back to the nearest bridge where you belong.
@MushHill_Act1-1 I hope that is all it is, but would you expect him to say anything else if he wanted to keep his concerns private? I respect that, I'd want to keep such concerns to myself too. I just hope he doesn't die young like my father did. (Probably overly worried because of how my father retired young and passed away shortly thereafter.)
@RedMageLanakyn Thing is that not a troll comment. I have never liked Reggie, and to me he was one of the weakest presidents of NOA. Compare him to say Minoru Arakawa he was a joke. For example Nintendo of Japan wanted to release their Super Mario Bros 2 in the US but because of Howard Lincoln telling Arakawa it was too similar and way to difficult for American audiences Arakawa told NoJ and instead we got our SMB2. If he didn't do that it would have been bad for Nintendo.
Reggie on the other hand refused to listen to the people. People have been asking for games like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, on a Nintendo system for years. They asked for a proper chat system for Nintendo Online and other things that would make Nintendo great again and not play third fiddle to Sony and MS. What does Reggie do hey hey we got recycled pizza boxes that you can make robots out of, we got games that you waggle controls to play without an option to play it normally. Things that no one asked for. He acted like everything was a joke, and then wondered why gamers didn't take Nintendo seriously why everyone looked at Nintendo as the kiddie console.
Those are facts. Now of it was a Troll post In wouldn't have facts to prove my point. Did I say what I said to be mean, no. Did I say the truth with facts that I did.
I missed you so much Reggie and so sad. But not RIP still alive. Are you Reggie Fans?
Best wishes to him! As long as I have been invested in Nintendo Reggie has been there so it is kind of sad to see him go but he's earned his retirement for sure.
@AlexSora89 Found him for ya, look at the 3rd comment....
https://gonintendo.com/stories/329283-nintendo-of-america-s-reggie-fils-aime-to-retire-doug-bowser-nam
@LUIGITORNADO I agree with you Arlo for NoA president
@Tasuki Absolutely daft. You're completely ignoring the 10 other people reminding you that Labo and Switch motion controls were in no way a decision made by NoA. What is so hard about that to understand?
You want the president of the American branch of one of the most prolific gaming companies to crap on their own creations, even if he wasn't directly involved in creating them? You don't understand how business works nor how these sorts of companies work. Please go away.
@Heavyarms55 That's a reasonable perspective to have, but I wouldn't worry too much. Honestly, I'm really glad you think that out of a place of concern for him. But honestly how Nintendo as a company and how Reggie as a person communicates to the public about the well-being and arrangements of higher-ups , he should be fine. I can't say I'm certain, but I just feel as if he's just moving on to a new chapter of his life, rather than his last.
(this was really long lol)
@Tasuki One large paragraph of nonsense did little to deter from what I and many others consider a troll/rude comment. You keep doing you though, just seems like that type of comment would've been edited by you at PS, so maybe you're not fit for being a mod with your double-standards.
@Tasuki We got Call of Duty and Assasins Creed, 2 of them on the Wii U and they didn't sell. Wonder why we didn't get them on the Switch. Reggie is the face of NoA yes but he also has to sell what the company is planning to distribute in NA. That's his job. Sure he can say fans in America want these experiences but he can only do so much with the hardware Nintendo puts out.
I even remember Reggie saying they (as in Nintendo) didn't market the Wii U well at all. He basically said they made a lot of mistakes. Maybe he could've pushed for a name change or more internal storage or perhaps a lower cost. Maybe he did but was told no.
@Tasuki
"we got recycled pizza boxes that you can make robots out of, we got games that you waggle controls to play without an option to play it normally. Things that no one asked for."
I am the audience of Nintendo LABO.
I want that Unusual toys from Nintendo.
It looks fun and way better than the 3rd party games you mentioned above.
@Tasuki
You’re making too much sense for a lot of these blinded fanboys
Good riddance. Couldn’t stand the guy.
1.) Iwata passed. R.I.P legend.
2.) Reggie retired.
3.) S.Miyamoto, EA mindset
4.) Gamefreak boss, Ran away...
5.) Bowser, Ex EA employee, marketing side to boot and Mario villain
A sign enough for Nintendo to crash???
@Evilworm Only TROLLs would come up with a stupid comments.
@SuperWeird "Good riddance. Couldn’t stand the guy."
And to those say good riddance-I don't see you doing any better. aka Trolls whom like to talk but can't walk the walk. When you do tell Reggie that.
The end of an era. While I'm glad that Reggie is able to retire at such a young age, I do feel a bit sad over this news, if only for the fact that he's been the face of NoA for about half my life, and I'm going to miss seeing him around. I wish him all the best and hope he'll enjoy the rest of his life.
Wow this came out of nowhere but best of luck to Reggie in retirement! He seems like a pretty cool guy who wasn't afraid to have a fun and playful personality, and made the best of what he had. Love how he acknowledges all the memes about him in his farewell video.
We should start a fake Bowser protest and give it a hashtag #fakebowserprotest. Let's have fun with this and see where this goes.
@SwitchForce i cant wait for Pay to win, lootboxes and MTX to come to
pokemon, zelda and marios.
Nice video. Best of luck to Reggie!
@Evilworm
A sign of troll gave comments. 🙄
@SuperWeird no one can stand your troll comment.
@RQuinain No I expect them to grow a pair and give the people want they want as they did in their early years.
@Mgene15 Pretty much. I guess in order to post here you gotta love everything Nintendo, even their stupid decisions.
@Tasuki The Switch is the best selling console in the U.S. currently, regardless of unlocalized or unported software that it doesn't have yet. Are you still saying it's not giving people what they want? Are the 9 million Switch consoles and millions of software sold since release not what people want? Quantitatively, who are the people asking for these triple AAA titles? I'd like to know, because you seem to think it's a significant amount and that this is, from a business and a fanbase perspective, a significant problem.
@Anti-Matter "Anybody named Peach working at NoA should be really worried."
LOL!!!!! And Mario too. I just can't shake the feeling that the dude is chosen because of his last name.
I mean c'mon! Doug BOWSWER?
Fire NOE president of Stephan Bole, because he doesn’t listen to fans unlike in the golden age of the NES/SNES days, the fans must’ve all been happy, because they didn’t complain about it on the internet. Nintendo localized everything for Europe back then (What’s a Fire Emblem?)
Bole on the other hand hasn’t pleased 100% of the internet, how can you not please 100% of people on the internet? Nintendo released Labo set 3 as his time as NOE president (even though he didn’t approve it or even oversee development of it) and NOS (which he probably again didn’t touch until the HQ in Kyoto handed it to him).And why are there no Assasin’s Creeds games on Switch? Assasin’s Creed III what’s that? And I’m made fun by 10 year old who play COD that Nintendo is for babies, so it must be their fault that I feel hurt by their insults and not my own insecurities!!!
I say the truth! That’s why I pretend all the replies disproving my points are just hate from blind Nintendrones!
My body was not Reggie for this ;___;. I know this had been said before, but I think this is the best message to send his way.
@Spoony_Tech
So I take it he's not commenting here anymore, huh.
@Nintenhub
Arlo already shared his tears.
@Tasuki Wow. Such rage. Anyone would think Reggie robbed your house and took a dump in your hallway. No point in getting mad at people you don't know for things you have no interest in. It's only games.
Well, *sses were kicked (i the good way, not the way that seems to be the trend in the AAA industry) and names were taken (Bowser, what's in a name?), and I may be from Europe, but whenever I see that lovely Game Boy Micro, I cannot help but see his giant hands holding it. Enjoy the rest of your life with your loved ones!
@AlexSora89 lol that’s funny as. Haven’t heard that name in a while and now we know he found a different bridge to live under. Thanks to @Spoony_Tech for the troll hunt 😂
@Filth_Element
Thanks to you for having such a genius nickname. It's the second one I've spotted this week.
@DK-Fan
The former prez of NoA was Japanese?
@gortsi Ahhh I only just realised he's actually a mod over there! Wow...moderates people there, acts like a child in here. Nice.
@AlexSora89 I saw he had posted a video earlier, as soon as I am home frok work I am watching it
Goodbye Reggie 😔 now someone called Mario needs to succeed Bowser! 😂
@Nintenhub
I embedded it right here for your viewing pleasure.
As it is my pleasure to see so many Arlo fans around!
How old is Reggie? I don’t think he will last that long being retired. Maybe one or two years then he will get bored and get a different job somewhere.
Oh no, Bowser is our new overlord!
@RickD hopefully Bowser can hold it down lol but yeah after you make enough money retirement is a good idea especially if there are benefits.
While things won't be the same without him, I wish him all the best. He deserves to spend time with his family and friends after heading such a large company.
@LUIGITORNADO
Arlo would make a great president for Nintendo
We're probably lucky if Doug Bowser has even half the charisma of Reggie.
Such a fun guy, and such a smoothtalking marketing man.
He arrived to the world of videogames with previously unseen skills in dodging critical questions, turning negatives into positives, and generally marketing the netherworld out of product.
Even before becoming president of NOA, Reggie has held so many prominent marketing positions, which such great results on his record, that it comes as no surprise to me that he is able to retire comfortably at just 58 years of age.
All the best to him and his family. He and his body will be missed, but his body of work for Nintendo will be with us forever!
He will be missed.
Only one way I know to pay respect "F"
End of an era. However I am glad that Reggie had the opportunity to exit on his own terms and with a good replacement. I had been wondering why Bowser had been stepping into the spotlight in the past 4-5 years. Likely getting groomed.
@AlexSora89 Minoru arakawa? yes
@DK-Fan
Thanks for the heads-up, it's been a busy week and I've only been commenting on recent stuff, I've only caught up with old replies now
I hope Nintendo does something for REGGIE, not the Nintendo community, on the 15th.
