In this revived series of features we'll look at games we feel merit remakes and remasters, either to celebrate their impact or to bring them to a new audience.
The Metroid franchise is in an odd state of limbo, which we certainly hope will be resolved with an announcement of some description in 2015. There's certainly a clamour for the mysterious current workings of Retro Studios to be a fourth entry in the Metroid Prime series, while the continuing silence around notable studios such as Next Level Games - which is independent but focused on Nintendo projects - also has some fantasizing about what could come.
It's a slightly peculiar state of affairs, all told, and the gap is widening in years and in terms of generations between entries. On the home console front the last arrival was Metroid: Other M in 2010, and we can assume a logical gap between future announcements and actual releases; the gap's even more notable in the portable space, with Metroid Prime: Hunters being a 2006 release. Spaces between releases are common, of course, but in examples such as The Legend of Zelda there's certainty that home console entries are in the works, at least, while portable titles arrive more regularly. With Metroid we don't feel the same degree of confidence, though senior figures in Nintendo did at least say there was hope of future Metroid news during an E3 2014 interview.
So, to the topic of this Remake Request - Super Metroid on 3DS, for which we'd naturally add a '3D' in the title. It's not an aimless request, but one with some logic behind it.
First of all, Metroid Dread is the 2D Metroid we really want, as it'd be new, but its history is so troubled and long that its appearance would be a bit of a shock. Yet we do feel that a 2D game, with nice layered effects, would suit the 3DS and its audience rather nicely, even accounting for the arrival of the C-Stick on the New Nintendo 3DS. We adore the Prime series in first person, but that seems like a natural fit for a TV rather than a small portable, notwithstanding the precedent of Hunters. Also, that E3 interview did show that Nintendo's aware of the need to accommodate and support both key styles, with Shinya Takahashi saying the following:
So it has been a while since we released the last one and we're having discussions internally about what we can do next. So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we'll be able to share something about them.
The timing fits, just about, as last year brought the 20th Anniversary for Super Metroid - the ship has sailed on a matching release, but the landmark of 'over 20 years' is there for Nintendo, especially as the SNES title remains one of the most iconic in its library. In terms of its role in popular and gaming culture, with music remixes, dedications and general good feeling towards it, there's little denying that it's lost little of its allure.
With the 3DS family arguably into its home stretch, perhaps its last two years, remakes and remasters provide useful and relatively quick projects to flesh out the library. It's not as if Nintendo's been shy of producing ports and remasters on the portable, and we reckon this one would generate a lot of interest.
Yet, of course, Super Metroid is already available on the Wii U Virtual Console. That's a consideration, naturally, which is why this would need to be a budget $30 (rather than $40) retail release, perhaps, but also offer more. Enhanced visuals, an extra unlockable mode, and perhaps even extended content that could incorporate aspects seen in other Metroid releases.
In other words, it'd have to be a project along the lines of what Metroid: Zero Mission brought to Game Boy Advance - that's coming to the Wii U Virtual Console in Europe this week, which certainly prompted some real buzz here on Nintendo Life. It delivered enhanced visuals, tweaked areas, new abilities that utilised ideas that had evolved in the series, and basically provided a version of the NES original that was memorable and admired. By utilising stronger technology to build on excellent foundations, Nintendo delivered a top-notch experience.
That's what we have in mind here, and it's a similar principle to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D - these games are in their original form on the Wii Virtual Console, but the 3DS versions provide modern touches and improvements that are difficult to resist.
If Nintendo's unsure of what direction to take with the Metroid series, particularly in the portable space, then this seems like a potential easy win. It would honour one of the company's greatest games, introduce it to a new audience, provide handy filler in the 3DS game library, and have a lower workload. That's not to say projects like this are entirely easy, especially as improvements, extra content and features would be required, but it's also lower-risk (arguably) and less demanding than an entirely new game.
We'd love any portable Metroid, in truth, and if an all-new experience isn't possible a remaster of Super Metroid would be a release to savour.
What do you think? Do you agree with this or think it's a bad idea?

SO MUCH YES!!! PLEASE!!!
...I really like Super Metroid. It's my favorite game of all time.
As much as I'd love to see Super Metroid given the Zero Mission treatment, I think I'd like to see Return of Samus done and expanded first.
This is my favorite game of all time! I played it so much that I am able to finish it within an hour now... I would love to have this game on the go in the form of a remake!
Since I can already play it on my 3ds, I would much rather see an HD version.
It's a good one but I beat it so many times. If they expanded it maybe.
Absolutely
I agree, @ThomasBW84. Super Metroid is an incredible game, one that I'd love to see updated and refreshed for 3D. I wish I could review it for Nintendo Life and give it a 10/10. Oh wait... I already did that.
I'd prefer a Metroid II remake, as I know that Metroid II DX was going to be a thing on the GBC but never happened, I figure Nintendo would be eager to finish that project that they started almost 2 decades (?) ago.
"Remake Request: Super Metroid 3D on Nintendo 3DS"
Of course my eyes skipped the "Remake Request" part of that sentence. and immediately got my hopes ALL THE WAY up. Now I feel disappointed for no reason.
I like Super Metroid as a SNES game. It feels so good with it's original graphics and style. Really I think I'd just prefer a new Metroid side scroller... Having said that, if they were going to remake a Metroid game for the 3DS, this would be the best one to go to for.
Heck yes for Super Metroid 3D. However as a previous commentor stated, A remake and expanded version of Metroid 2 Return of Samus has to be done. I'd want that above all else. However now that I think about it, since Metroid never got an anniversary anything, how about about an updated 3D collection consisting of Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid2(expanded/remake), Metroid3/Super Metroid( expanded), and Metroid4:Fusion(expanded). Call it Metroid 3D:Anthology. Heck perhaps through in Metroid Prime Hunters too boot. Now thats a collection I'd dib out 50 bucks on a 3DS game for.
Slow news week?
I now loathe seeing people talking about Metroid.
Either they want the franchise to continue backsliding and living in the past with 2-D games, where there is no more room for advancement (or it would've happened already), or they want a brainless "Metroid Prime 4" totally ignorant of the fact that the Prime TRILOGY was wrapped up with part 3--so even if they do make another 3D game, it still shouldn't be "Prime."
Then of course there's the brain-dead endless remake talk: Remaking Super Metroid could not be more pointless, particularly since it was already remade three times with Fusion, Other M, and technically Prime 1--every single one of them using the same weapons, items, territories, and design as Super Metroid, and the only one of these that's any good at all is Prime 1.
Fusion was only "okay," but we should face reality that Fusion was the start of the piss-poor storytelling that exploded like a vomit bomb to create Other M--and Fusion killed off the exploration in favor of a mindless linear platformer.
As I look over the comments so far, I'm saddened to see that, apparently, I'm the only person here who actually wants new games instead of a barrage of remakes. As if Nintendo doesn't already make enough damn remakes.
I'd love a new 2D Metroid. Fusion is simply the best Metroid out.
I bought a SNES last year just to play Super Metroid as I didn't have a Wii U at the time. I also started playing Other M and found it enjoyable enough.
I'd never really got on with the Prime games although I bought the trilogy when it was re-released on the Wii U and was enjoying it until I took a break for some Zelda.
Dont remake super metroid. Make a new 2.5D metroid instead.
I would get it (If only because I have no interest in the PAL version on VC).
This is weird... My cousin came for a visit yesterday, and now you guys are posting a bunch of articles related to some of the stuff we did while he was here. We always play Mario Party 3, and then you guys posted the MP N64. His favorite game ever is Super Metroid, and we actually spent a large portion of our time yesterday playing through it on an emulator to create restore points everywhere.
More on topic, I'd be all for it. Maybe add another world, improve the visuals to look less tile-based and more depthy, (Like Donkey King Country Returns 3D) and of course other small refinements, and it would be excellent!
@SuperLink
Yeah, because that worked out so well last time.
30 bucks for a Super Nintendo game? That seems a bit steep to me. It would have to be about the same price as the other 3D classics.
I would love to see Super Metroid 3D appear on the 3DS, but please don't give super metroid the Zero Mission or Fusion Treatment, i preferred the slightly floaty physics of Super Metroid, I would also say the same for Metroid 2 if they ever re made it.
But i'm also hoping Nintendo will also release Metroid Prime on the 3DS as well.
If you compare the New 3DS to the GameCube, last time i checked, the New 3DS was very much capable of doing what the GameCube could do, and more.
No. Super Metroid doesn't need a remake, the game hasn't aged poorly at all.
Metroid 2 is the one that needs to be remade, that game is borderline unplayable for anyone that didn't play it back then, or masochists. Seriously, it's a Metroid game with no map. In black and white.
Sure, but give us a new Metroid game first.
@Desrever you and me both sniff still a good idea but as mentioned already Metroid II deserves a look over.
Well obviously I'd prefer a new game to a remake, but I wouldn't mind this game being remade. Oddly, it's one of the few big SNES games to not get remade (Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, the DKC trilogy, Kirby Super Star). That being said, I'm not sure I expect the Zero Mission treatment. The reason they could afford to do such massive improvements in Zero Mission in the first place is because the original Metroid had very simplistic design and a limited amount of items. Super Metroid doesn't have that same problem, nearly every item that's appeared in 2D is in this game (the only ones that haven't are the Spider Ball and the Diffusion Missiles, and the former is kind of OP in 2D and the latter is near useless), so if they're going to add a lot of items they're going to need to come up with some new ones. Aside from the items, I guess they could redesign Maridia, that area's layout is really annoying and trollish, but that's about it.
@River3636 I'm sure that if Nintendo were ever to remake Super Metroid they would expand it by a couple of areas.
@MrKenta
Unplayable? I'm not sure about about it being unplayable though i'm sure others would say otherwise, but it's not terrible, even without a map.
Ever heard of atmosphere?
I thought Metroid 2 has plenty of atmosphere, even in monochrome.
It's probably the one metroid game i've memorised quite well.
30 dollar budget release? Nope. Super metroid deserves better. With 3d models and new environments, they could easily make it worth full price. Pull a zero mission, but with super metroid! Also, is it just me, or has the metroid hype been increasing subtly over the past year, both in the Nintendo fan base, and general media? This hype can only mean one thing.... Metroid prime 2 pinball is almost upon us!
I love Super Metroid, but no way I am paying $30 for a remake. Maybe if they remake Fusion or even Zero Mission and include them in the package.
SM may be the only game that I never played in its prime that for me holds up to all the accolades it received back in the day. Even when I made the mistake of playing it with a Gamecube controller.
I just think they should have more 3D Classics in general. But actually pick "Classics", so yes, Super Metroid would be cool.
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all
@Monado_III You can already play Super Metroid on your 3DS? Not that I'm aware of.
This game is still so playable that I'd rather see a Metroid 2 remake. I'm expecting one of the two to be announced soon, though. Well, more than anything I'd rather have a new 2D adventure on 3DS, but with what Nintendo's been saying recently I expect a remake.
@manu0 I know they would but would it be enough for me to buy it? Maybe but I want a new one.
Nice to see Mr Negative Nintendo Arm Chair CEO is back
@Tsurii897
I'm probably the biggest Metroid fanboy on here. Which is why I don't just lazily fall back to Super Metroid over and over again. Any idiot can point to Super Metroid and say "durr, good game. Me want more." Only someone as as versed as I am in this franchise goes beyond that.
@Moon
Didn't Nintendo charge $30 for a SNES game on the Wii already?
Indeed they did, it was called Super Mario All-Stars.
@MrKenta
The same thing can be said of Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, StarFox 64...
Nintendo fans have spoken with their wallets to Nintendo--don't give us new games, just release the same thing over and over for full price, and we'll buy it! It's like the definition of clinging to a security blanket, afraid of change, afraid of anything new.
In a wider view, this constant strumming the strings of the same old tune over and over again is a big part of why Nintendo no longer appeals to anyone but a small core fanbase--and that will continue to marginalize their profits and appeal.
If they did a remake at all it should be in HD. Even something like DKCR suffers from the crappy screens on the 3DS and is much better experienced on the Wii. I want Nintendo to keep pushing forward in HD and not keep falling back on low resolution games. That's being innovative too in a way Nintendo could really use right about now imo.
@Clucknadus BlargSNES aka homebrew.
This would be one game that would really benefit from a 3DS makeover.
@Quorthon
McDonald's is a good example of what will happen if Nintendo refuses to adapt to the market. It's got a brand image problem that they will have trouble recovering from, ironically showing how out of touch Nintendo is by agreeing to have happy meal toys with them last summer. They literally couldn't have picked a more toxic brand to be associated with. Nintendo needs new IPs not so many remakes.
All it needs to be is in 3D, nothing needs to be added like in Zero Mission (which ruined the game IMO.)
Would (re)buy the game day one!
that would be such a wast of effort, Super Metroid holds incredibly well, i want a DREAD new metroid
I just got the new 3ds and I would love to have a remake of one of the best space adventures games of all time...even when I was stuck on a level it was amazing experience to go back and figure things out
@OneBagTravel agree
"I'd buy that for a dollar"
Seriously though, I'd pay full retail price for it. It's the one game that's needed a make over for far too long!
30.00 bucks for a super Metroid conversion would be absolutely nuts. I also wouldn't hold your breath for a project like this from Nintendo THey have shown no interest in making 3d classics now for about 2 years. They have in a way turned it over to Sega. Sega has done an excellent job of it. To bad Sega just couldn't be put in charge of 3D classics and bring out games for Nintendo, Konami and of course their own games. Konami has all those old Hudson soft games which would be beautiful as 3d classics. Nintendo has seriously dropped the ball here. I think there is a good sized market for these 3D classics. Metroid, castlevania, Bonk would all profit from 3d remakes not to mention many, many more. At least Sega is bringing some justice to it. Gosh its like Virtual console only cooler. I thought by this time in the 3ds lifespan we would be seeing over 100 classics brought to it. Come on Nintendo and Konami.....Wake up please there is money to be made if you only pick good titles instead of these head scratching virtual console titles you've been loading up with.
I don't know. Honestly, if they released Super Metroid on Nintendo 3DS I wouldn't buy it anyway. I can already play it on a big screen on my Wii U. I'd rather just keep hoping for a new Metroid game, because that's all I really want.
@Windy Not a 3d classics but a full on overhaul. Make it look like Castlevania Lord of Shadows Mirror of Fate and I would be ecstatic. That game looks so good.
Metroid II should get a colorized remake to go along with it.
I would kill for a Metroid game headed by ChAIR Entertainment (or just for Shadow Complex to get a sequel), but Nintendo seems to not know what to do with Metroid.
However, there is a new Aliens movie around the corner so they probably can get another game out of that material. Hopefully they also follow suit with Aliens and drop the last few (Fusion & Other M) from the timeline in order to get themselves out of the creative corner.
No thanks. 2D Metroid V for 3DS, please.
If any game needs a remake, though, it's Metroid II. Not Super Metroid.
While a complete remake a la Zero Mission would be great, I'd much rather have a proper Metroid 5. A new 2D Metroid, with a new premise and new ideas for power-ups. But please, more like Zero Mission than Fusion. Non-linear exploration instead of heavily directed and verbose story.
I'd rather see a remake of Metroid 2 because that one is in a state that many just won't bring themselves to play even as fans of the series. Plus, few would be worried about new additions and expansions on the gameplay.
I don't see some big improvement coming with the 3DS. This isn't a 3D game and the imagery is already fantastic. You can't go higher res because the 3DS screen is already at the resolution of the original game. I mean I'm sure there could be something but I don't have any vision for it.
IMO, It would be better to make something brand new that has it's gameplay rooted in the strengths of the 3DS.
You don't post an article like this unless it's official. I almost had a heart attack. I have been wanting any version of this game on my 3DS for years. This is the most perfect game ever created. I need this.
I have to agree with those that think Metroid II is a more appropriate remake because that game is simplistic enough to really benefit from the Zero Mission treatment. The design is really simplistic and linear and there's a lot of items they could add to it (Speed Booster, Super Missile, Power Bombs, Grapple Beam, Gravity Suit). The game could really stand to be massively redesigned.
Yes and expand it. Add 6 new areas; 60 fps; play as Zero Suit; 3D; new suits and an alternate ending, where you get to save... wait for it... The baby.
@Revanmann Someone missed the label "Remake Request"
I might be the only person ever to say this but Other M is my favorite Metroid game. I loved that they talked and had personality. And everyone points at the Ridley scene where she gets scared. Im pretty sure she freezes up every time he shows up in every game, just not at the detail its been shown with Other M. But anyway my dream Metroid games will be a 3rd person exploring/ shooter with cover base combat, Zelda meets Gears of War. And a Zero Suit Samus adventure game like Uncharted/ Tomb Raider.
As much as I'm enjoying Majora's Mask 3D, I don't really want any more remakes for the platform. Give me a new 2D Metroid for the 3DS instead.
I absolutely don't think a remake is necessary since the original still plays perfectly! Still an amazing game today.
I'd say Metroid II is more deserving of a remake. I'd much prefer a new Metroid game though.
The only title that needs
remaderetconned is Other M, mainly because it's so awful in it's original form.@Spoony_Tech it is so good I still don't know why people dogged Castlevania on 3ds when it came out. I found it to be excellent and I played all the old versions. I even have the PCEngine version which was excellent also.
Super Metroid hasn't aged. I think Nintendo would actually make the game worse with a modernized remake, especially in terms of the game's physics, which have made it almost a dream to speedrun. The only Metroid game that should be considered for remaking is Metroid II. It would actually benefit: color added, map added, walljumping added, more upgrades added and more bosses. Super Metroid is as content rich as it should be, Metroid II has far more room for content to be added.
I don't think the focus on the 3DS should be fill up the remaining years with remakes though, and I certainly expect to see a new Metroid on the 3DS before any remake, even one deserving like Metroid II. The series has too much potential to waste its debut entry onto a system with a remake.
@River3636 Yeah sadly it's a pretty short game once you know where to go and what to get. Even when I'm not trying to rush it's rarely more than 4-5 hours.
@Quorthon I never grew up with the series, but after finding it a couple year a ago, it is now my favorite Nintendo franchise. Although I guess I'm not a "hardcore" fan though. Because I loath metroid nes, and I don't like metroid 2. But I thought metroid other m was decent. So whatever. My favorites are tied between super metroid, and zero mission. I guess I just prefer the metroid games that give me an in game map. I don't find being lost for 3 hours very fun. I like figuring things out, but not for forever.
@Spoony_Tech well I misunderstood then. A full blown remake like Castlevania would be off the hook. I still think the should consider 3D Classics as well for Super Metroid and Fusion. They ewould look sweet! That would also be one heck of a 20th anniversary to its fans if they are not planning anything anyway
I rather have Nintendo remaking Metroid II, since it didn't age too well.
If the rest of the 3DS's lifespan is mostly remakes from Nintendo's end, we can blame that on the Wii U and it's piss poor sales... part of which is actually due to the 3DS in the first place.
@Acarie I also liked other M but typically people think it's the worst. I thought it was more comfortable to play
@IceClimbers I blame smash bros. 3ds. I talked to a ton of people who said they didn't want a Wii u anymore because they had smash on their 3ds.
This would be cool if they used all-new, highly detailed sprite-work (think Rayman Origins). As much as I love pixel-art, a re-release of Super Metroid that still looks like an SNES game (even an updated one) will not be fresh enough to feel worth $30.
As others said, I'd much rather see Return of Samus get the Zero Mission treatment.
SO MUCH YES.
I'd personally love a remake of both Super Metroid and Metroid 2 both given the zero mission treatment with expanded content and updated graphics. That being said, Metroid Dread would be amazing. I picture it as 2D Metroid with a Dead Space vibe.
Please don't be rude to others
As others have said, Super Metroid still holds up pretty well today. It's Metroid II that really needs a remake.
Plus, next year is Metroid II's 25th anniversary...
Well, if requests are being taken then i say, we have a Super Mario Sunshine for the 3ds, and have a better handling using the new nintendo 3ds with the extra Zl Zr buttons and use c-stick to change camera. They had a Luigi's mansion sequel for 3ds, why can't they do it to other GCN titles.
Either they want the franchise to continue backsliding and living in the past with 2-D games, where there is no more room for advancement (or it would've happened already)
Same could be said about the 3D games.
or they want a brainless "Metroid Prime 4" totally ignorant of the fact that the Prime TRILOGY was wrapped up with part 3--so even if they do make another 3D game, it still shouldn't be "Prime."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9JAf_WwTE8
*Then of course there's the brain-dead endless remake talk: Remaking Super Metroid could not be more pointless, particularly since it was already remade three times with Fusion, Other M, and technically Prime 1--every single one of them using the same weapons, items, territories, and design as Super Metroid, and the only one of these that's any good at all is Prime 1[/strong]
Are you really comparing a 2D game with a freaking 3D game?
Fusion was only "okay," but we should face reality that Fusion was the start of the piss-poor storytelling that exploded like a vomit bomb to create Other M--and Fusion killed off the exploration in favor of a mindless linear platformer.
"but mah silent grill and crappy story" Are you really implying that any of the Metroid games actually was good at story telling? Even though Other M story was crap, it doesn't even matter because Metroid isn't the one to be good at story telling in the first place. Also, Metroid Fusion is linear if you don't actually try to look for stuff.
As I look over the comments so far, I'm saddened to see that, apparently, I'm the only person here who actually wants new games instead of a barrage of remakes. As if Nintendo doesn't already make enough damn remakes.
Yeah no, you're not a special little snowflake because I don't want a remake either, but that doesn't mean I can't call you out on your crappy reasons.
I almost crapped my pants when I saw the article title and then I realized it was just a discussion point and not an announcement...
@aaronsullivan
Good idea! LOVE Metroid II and that one for sure does not get enough love. One of my first Gameboy experiences and it could benefit greatly from a remake like Zero Mission did.
I agree that we need a portable Metroid but a remake of the SNES wouldn't be worthwhile.
A Super Metroid 3D remake would be awesome.
@EllenJMiller
I agree. That game needs to be re-done more than anything else.
@Chaoz: Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission and Super Metroid all did a great job at storytelling.
@Quorthon Completely unrelated to the topic of the article, but it seems Nintendo of America is actually picking up their advertising efforts. They have two commercials for Mario Party 10 and even have a commercial for freaking Fossil Fighters Frontier.
There's also an in-stores marketing campaign for Splatoon (as well as MP10 and amiibo, but the ad is mainly for Splatoon) already, and it has an absolutely perfect slogan: http://i.imgur.com/NW9KK0Y.jpg
NoA marketing a game that's still 2 months away, and a new IP at that? I'm impressed.
@IceClimbers Awesome! Now hopefully Splatoon will sell well!
I still cant believe Nintendo released the CRAP 50hz version on the Wii U Vc otherwise it would of been a day 1 purchase, shockingly slack.
@firstnesfan Just curious. How would you give Super the Zero Mission treatment? Because I can't see what kind of major, game changing updates they could give the game.
@IceClimbers "Add colour to your world" It's good but they should go further than that and have a little playful dig at the majority of other shooters.Something like "Too much browns and greys in your life?Add colour to your world" It's got a bit Sega v Nintendo about it.
No. More. Bloody. Remakes.
The game is already available on Wii and Wii U. In an age where old games are being rereleased on modern platforms (cough Virtual Console), I see absolutely no point in these remakes. If they can somehow port SNES games to the 3DS, then sure, go for it, but I'd really love to see a new 3D Metroid game in the spirit of Metroid Prime Hunters on the 3DS. It's been nearly 9 years since its release (!!!) and a follow-up is long overdue. We're already four years into the 3DS' lifespan and there is not a single new Metroid game available on the platform.
@OorWullie Extended version for some Splatoon commercials? Would also make a good billboard ad, but I don't see Nintendo going that far (except maybe in Seattle and NYC). Yeah, it definitely has a Sega v Nintendo vibe to it. Also reminds me of the Game Boy Color ads a little bit.
I pretty strongly disagree that this would be either an 'easy' or a good idea.
Updating super metroid (or most any 2d game really) to support 3d visuals would require extensive retooling, to the point where it might be better to start from scratch.
Translating a 3d polygon game to 3ds (and in 3d) wouldn't be too bad, but making 2d sprite based stuffs into viable 3d isn't as easy as just separating the background from the foreground from the characters/enemies/items... There is a TON more work involved... Read up on some of the sega m2 blogs on their 3d ports for more info about these hurdles. Creating a 3d 3ds port of this game would require a fairly significant investment of dev talent and time.
With that said, I'd be much happier to play my super metroid cart on my snes and have ninty put their talented devs working on an all new metroid.
@sillygostly Re-releases are fine in most circumstances, but in some cases an older game may not have aged well or could implement some modern improvements (like outdated design decisions, new control schemes, new abilities, etc.), and in that case a remake is useful because it breathes new life into an old game. Zero Mission is a good example of this, the original Metroid had a lot of simple, repetitive level design and a limited item selection, so the game felt highly outdated. Now Super Metroid certainly would not benefit from a remake because it doesn't have any significant problems nor is it lacking any new gameplay elements, but it's ridiculous to think that remakes are useless.
HELL NO!! Dear Nintendo, make new IPs or if you use any of your foundational characters, please make something fresh and enjoyable. NL should be ashamed of making such an article. We just got Majora's Mask. Why not bring back battle toads? What about Gyromite? A new Clash at Demon Head? so many games in their catalog to pick from to bring back to life. Other M sucked donkey bal.......all i'm saying is if you do make a Metroid for 3DS, let it be new and innovative
I don't care what people think, I think Fusion is the best Metroid game ever and its my personal favorite.
@Bolt_Strike : I was not disparaging all remakes. I simply do not see the need to remake a game such as Super Metroid, which, as you've stated, does not have any significant faults. It was a fine game over 20 years ago and it is still a fine game even by contemporary standards. I'd rather Nintendo devote their resources to financing a new game. All but the DS Metroid games are now readily available. Any remakes at this point would be completely redundant.
@dublae Microsoft owns Battletoads now, Nintendo can't do anything with it.
@sillygostly A new Metroid game would be preferable, but again, Metroid II does suffer from outdated design and a lack of powerups like Metroid did, so that would be a good candidate for a remake.
@Windy: Agreed. We will never see it. Just bring us Metroid Dread and be done with it.
Super Metroid doesn't need to be remake,the game is perfect as it is.The gameplay,the controls,the graphics are all perfect.They would most likely make the game slightly worst by remaking it,so there's no point.
No. Just no to this. If any Metroid game needs a remake, it's not Super Metroid, it's Metroid II. It's the only one that a) hasn't been remade, and b) would benefit SIGNIFICANTLY from a remake on 3DS.
And if they don't remake Metroid II, they better put out a new game altogether. It's past overdue.
@dublae Yes, Microsoft owns Rare, so they own Battletoads, but Phil Spencer has been teasing its return for awhile now. Wouldn't be surprised to see Battletoads at E3 this year, albeit not on Nintendo's platforms.
While I do agree that Super Metroid doesn't have much to gain from a remake, I don't get why people consider it to be an absolute masterpiece. It's not really much less linear than any other Metroid game, and from a modern perspective it doesn't really stand out over say, Fusion or Zero Mission. Also, Maridia's design is just plain awful.
I've always known I was an oddball but I REALLY didn't mind the storytelling in Fusion. It was linear, and I understand that might be a major point in most people's ill will towards it. It wasn't just kind of linear, it was dead on "go here, everything else is locked" linear. In regards to a 'story' I thought it had the most 'plot'. I use quotations intentionally here as all of them have a story to be told but this one used dialogue (text dialogue) much more intensively and was at least a solid story as compared to ***** M.
Oh well, I like it I will however be VERY disappointed if Metroid skips the 3ds. A 2d side scroller is exactly what I wanted to this system, personally I have a hunch Nintendo isn't letting us down... I believe a Fusion/Prime bundle is on it's way.
Just say no to remasters and remakes. You can't move forward if you're living in the past, and it's already bad enough that we have to deal with the sequelitis and franchisement-happy groove that video games and movies are currently locked in.
I loved Super Metroid as much as anyone, but if I wanted to play it again it's already on the VC.
Make a Metroid 2 remake instead Nintendo.
If anything i'd rather see a rendition of Metroid II that brings the title to its full potential first.
Super Metroid doesn't really need a remake (or at least not as much as the former title) imo.
Would love to see this, but would also be satisfied with SNES VC games on the 3DS.
If they could basically do something like a 'Sega 3D Classics' to it, giving it that kind of love and attention, and release in on 3DS like that I think it would be a big hit.
@Quorthon - "Only someone as as versed as I am"
There are not many with arrogance such as this. To claim other people are ignorant when you're own ignorance is clear to see is hypocrisy at its best. Try reading the article first and understand what it's trying to say.
I . WOULD . BUY . IT!
I'd love to see a 2D metroid game on the 3DS, or even on the Wii U, or on both like Smash. I'd also love to play a new F-Zero, Startropics and Faxanandu game too, and to see The Goonies 2 come onto the virtual arcade shop.
@CTs_Lieutenant
It's wanting a game that was near perfection remade in 3D. Nothing would be gained and the game can be easily played by anyone who wants it already.
Indeed, if the best anyone can think of is to "keep going back to Super Metroid," clearly, everyone is out of ideas for this franchise.
And it's pretty clear from the comments that very few here are versed in the Metroid franchise. At this point, I'm more versed in it simply by owning Metroid II on the original Game Boy. This isn't really a surprise--Metroid has never been one of Nintendo's most popular franchises, and the best sellers were the Prime trilogy and the original NES game. There's large gaps there as opposed to Zelda which not only appeared on every Nintendo system (sans Virtual Boy), but has had a physical/retail game released for full price almost every year since 1998--barring only about 3 years without a Zelda.
@alLabouTandroiD So you mean like what Metroid II looked like in the cutscene at the beginning of Super Metroid? I'd buy a 3D version of that as well.
I want a new one. Remaking N64 games is not a bad idea because their 3D graphics have aged quite poorly nevertheless SNES 2D ones haven´t, they still look very good and Super Metroid can be played on Wii and WiiU.
However, to play Super Metroid on the go would be nice so I propose we demand SNES VC on 3DS AND GBA games too. I still don't understand the logic behind releasing them only on WiiU (probably nobody does).
Though I'd rather see an entirely new Metroid title on 3DS (not the Prime style), I'd love to have ANY classic Metroid remastered for 3DS. Throw us a frickin bone here!
@DarkCoolEdge isn't it obvious? They put the virtual console games everyone actually wants on the system they've been struggling with. Wii U purchase incentive.
@CTs_Lieutenant @Quorthon The problem of Metroid is that just about every Metroid game outside of the Prime series are little more than a Japanese take on the Alien(s) franchise. Metroid was heavily influenced by the original Alien movie. Metroid II draws heavily from Aliens (being sent to the homeplanet of the monster). Super Metroid takes plot points from Aliens 3. Metroid Fusion is their take on Alien Resurrection. The Other M pulls from all the above.
That means they have no where to go with it. Unless they want to introduce a Aliens vs Predator mashup in the Metroid universe, they have no material and seem to be really bad at telling a mostly original story (see Other M).
I've come to enjoy the Metroid series, including Metroid II. I would rather see Metroid II get released digitally as a remake (getting Zero treatment) before anything else is touched just because so many missed the adventure. It was also quite brutal to play (small screen, no map, confusing layout).
My preference however is that Nintendo move forward instead of constantly plundering the past. I understand that there is desire for that in the market. Yet I would rather them open up a shop dedicated to remaking eShop versions of titles instead of putting their best talent & resources on recreating the past. $15-20 on an eShop remake handled by a second party makes perfect sense to me, a $40-60 retail release handled by Nintendo first party just seems like they cannot think of anything better to create. That second one concerns me.
As much as I would love this, I'd rather want Metroid 2 to receive the Zero Mission treatment. Super Metroid has aged phenomenally, Metroid 2 on the other hand has done the converse
Nintendo has been name dropping Metroid in their official channels here and there. I'm hoping they're either testing the waters for fan reactions, or trying to build hype. The series has been put on the back burners, so I can see them releasing an updated Super Metroid to gauge whether or not a brand new title is worth the effort. Sadly, I think Other M did more to damage the fanbase rather than building the franchise. A new game can be risky if it's not up to snuff. Having two games commercially fail back to back would more or less kill any hope of future releases. A Super Metroid re-release might be playing it safe, but Metroid seems a little fragile right now. The Prime Trilogy doing well on the Wii U eShop was the best thing to happen to the series in a while.
The re-release will be good, if Nintendo includes a much user-friendly guidance. When I first played it the level is so big that it becomes overwhelming. The remake of Metrioid on GBA was awesome.
@Bolt_Strike the battletoads comment was wishful thinking lol. A remake would be nice for Metroid II but I'm honestly tired of remakes at this point. I don't know if you are though. I know Nintendo can pull off another Metroid from scratch. They have the resources
Super Metroid 3-D or Metroid Prime Trillogy 3-D
Let M2 do it.
They actually care about how a classic is handled
I rather have a new! Enough of surfing on past glories!!
@Quorthon
For possibly the first time ever I agree with you, although I do love Prime 3 (I'm actually a HUGE fan of motion controls, but to each his own).
Since Nintendo is stubborn with new IP, every time a new title in an existing franchise comes out the first thing I ask is, "what's new". I think Nintendo was right to release Other M in the sense that it mixed things up. It just didn't do it well.
Also I like Nintendo to come up with ideas for their unique control methods. I may not be the biggest fan of the GamePad gimmick but since they banked so heavily on it, make more games that use it intuitively.
Nintendo has a mixed reputation of innovating with main franchise entries (Zelda, 3D Mario, Metroid) and just rehashing (NSMB, Pokemon, Animal Crossing up to New Leaf etc.)
Wouldn't it be better to make Super Mario 64 Remake? I don't care for one or two 3D layers on 2D games.
I'm so mad at Nintendo right now over the 3D Classics. There should be near 100 games to download in the 3D Classics section. Thank god for Sega. Now can you guys show DraculaX on SNES? perfect game for 3d conversion.
I would be up for a remake IF and ONLY IF there wasn't such a drought of new games in the series.
Never got a chance to play super metroid. I remember watching my friends uncle play it on snes back in the day. I would buy this game but I would like to see a new metroid sometime in the future. Fusion was great!
A 3d Super Metroid option would be cool but I prefer playing 2D games in 2D.
