Re: Mailbox: Non-Standard Switch 2s, Joy-Con Colours, Zelda amiibo We Need - Nintendo Life Letters

kurtasbestos

That's me! That's my letter! I'm not sure how I missed this article despite getting an email from Nintendo Life saying "your letter brought tears to our eyes and you deserve a Pulitzer Whatsit"*. Also, I might have been slightly inebriated and/or exhausted from lack of sleep when I wrote the thing, but I'm honored that my letter was chosen to be a star!

@Thomystic With a kid growing up in Japan, that's a VERY good guess. But no, fortunately he doesn't seem to know about that game yet. Or the other game Japanese kids love, Human: Fall Flat. The game he wanted involves CRAFTing things out of materials that you MINE out of the earth. I think it's called "Boxy Diggers" or something. And I guess I don't entirely HATE the thing... it's just that the time he spends playing it is time that could be spent working on my backlog of artsy indies games. Because that's what kids SHOULD like!

*Not their exact words.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Gets Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade, Out Now

I spent a couple of weeks in the hospital last summer thanks to a combination of misdiagnosed appendicitis and vertigo (worst summer vacation ever!), and man-oh-jeez I played the crap out of this game. Then they kicked me out of the hospital and pesky things like family and job have kept me away from it. But when I finally get around to buying a Swetch 2 this is jumping straight to the top of my backlog.

Re: Feature: "We Were Quite Nervous" - Star Trek: Voyager - Across The Unknown Dev Talks Returning Actors, Music & Fan Feedback

kurtasbestos

I like this part: "Trekkies are a notoriously detail-oriented bunch and quick to offer, erm, 'feedback'."

I love Star Trek, but in general Trekkies suck. Including me! I don't know if I'd rank Voyager near the top of my favorite series list (and personally, the only series I truly dislike is TOS, but obviously none of the rest would have existed without it so I can tolerate it), but I AM looking forward to this game, and not reading the comments that "fans" post about it.

Re: Talking Point: Where's Your Nintendo Labo Now?

kurtasbestos

I saw a couple of the things on sale for dirt cheap years ago and will forever regret not buying them because I always wanted to try them. I don't remember why I didn't buy them, but maybe it's because my kid was too little at the time? I DID, however, pick up the VR kit on sale and... I should probably do something with it now that he is big enough to play with it without destroying his eyes.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch 'Walking Simulators' And Narrative Games

kurtasbestos

Florence is one of the very few games (maybe... 3?) that Nintendo Life tricked me into buying that I've regretted (for shame!). It wasn't terrible, it just felt overly cliched. And like I was supposed to be playing it on my phone. Also, wait... I know it's been a while since I played it, but how is that game a walking simulator??

On the other hand, Nintendo Life tricked me into buying both ABZU and Shape of the World, and I absolutely loved both of those games! And one of these days I might get around to playing some of the other games on this list that I already own!

Re: Anniversary: The First Handheld 'Contra' Is 35 Years Old Today

kurtasbestos

I never owned an NES as a kid. I had a friend who had one, though, and every time we hung out he'd be like "let's go play outside!" and I'd be like "shut up, you have a NES - let's play Contra!!!" and he always caved to my pressure. But then I got a Game Boy and this game and then I didn't need him any more! Dang... sorry childhood friend who's name I don't remember. I was kind of a jerk. Let's not discuss how I also made you let me play Zelda.

Side note: Oh man I wish they'd make DLC (Physical Content... PC??) of this game for the LEGO Game Boy.

Re: Opinion: Wishlisting Games On Switch eShop Is A Game In Itself

kurtasbestos

@OHB123 About an Elf is pretty good. My blurb about it showed up in one of those "games we missed" articles on Nintendo Life!

Personally, I have a ton of games in my wish list that "I'm totally going to buy when it goes on sale!" Then it goes on sale and I don't buy it because I have too many other games. But sometimes I do! I just can't bear to delete the games that I know I never will buy, sale or not, because for whatever reason, they EARNED their spot on my wish list.

Re: Mailbox: Ninty Getting Its Freak On, Area Codes, The 'Discourse' - Nintendo Life Letters

I also like the change from "we" to "I". Also, "Wii" to "me". I think. Imagining the entire staff playing a game and coming to a consensus, then having a single person write the review always seemed a little unrealistic. On a semi-related note, my horri... uhhh... misguided child watches videos of people playing games on the YouTubes (side note: I hate when he does that and I BEG him to just play games himself) and it always irritates me when the person playing says "we" instead of "me". Like, "oh, we just barely made that jump!" instead of "oh, me just barely made that jump!" Annoying.

Re: Opinion: Upgraded For Switch 2, ARMS Deserves A Second Shot At Greatness

kurtasbestos

I decided to give Splatoon on WiiU a chance even though I don't like shooters, and it turned out I didn't like it. So when Switch rolled around, I decided to give this game a chance even though I don't especially like fighting games, and... holy crap I loved it. It's probably the only game I've ever played online (granted, there aren't a ton of those for me) where I felt like I was actually GOOD. So yes, I will gladly play it with fancier specs on Switch 2, and I will impatiently await ARMS 2.

Re: Opinion: Switch's Secret Best Couch Multiplayer Game Won't Be Playable On Switch 2

kurtasbestos

I found the VR Labo on sale for dirt cheap a few years back but never put it together for fear of ruining my child's eyes. Well, it sounds like it's time to get started ruining!

Side note: I seriously regret not buying the other Labo sets when I saw them on sale, too. On the other hand, both my backlog and the "graveyard of unfinished projects" room in my house are probably okay with that.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (19th April)

kurtasbestos

I finished Echoes of Wisdom recently (100% and everything!) and I decided I'm going to try to finish off some of the smaller games in my backlog before I play Xenoblade X or one of the other RPGs I desperately want to play but have been avoiding. So I chose Patrick's Parabox, and... it hurts my brain. But in a good way. Still, I don't want to look up solutions and each level is starting to take a long time to figure out. Maybe I should have just played an RPG.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Xenoblade Game? Rate Your Favourite For Our Upcoming Ranking

kurtasbestos

I gave them all 10s. They're all fantastic games but in their own ways. If I was going to try to rank them strictly by how much I enjoyed them, though, then it would probably be:
1 → X → 3 → 2
The ridiculous thing is that I own all three versions of 1 and I've STILL never actually seen the ending. Which reminds me, I should probably finish 3, too. Also all of those DLC things.
