I played the crap out of this game however many decades ago it was released in (what is it, like 5? 7??), but I have absolutely no memories of the music other than MAYBE the title screen. I'm sure if someone played the songs for me I'd be like "oh hey, now I remember", but not remembering the music makes me not mind if it gets replaced, especially if it's by someone with Sonic-cred.
"the producer of Space Channel 5, Rez, Lumines, and Meteos"
Uh oh... I've owned and played to death every game on that list, but still haven't owned or played Tetris Effect. It's okay, the games in my backlog can always use a new friend.
Oh surprise! The internet hates a thing! I saw the video and thought "okay, sure, it could be interesting but I'll wait to hear more" and then moved on with my life. Apparently I'm a terrible person for doing that.
I bought Ibb & Obb on sale recently and have been playing it with my 4-year-old. It's a pretty fantastic game, but mostly I'm impressed that I can say things like "I'll jump through here and land on the yellow thing, then you bounce through that thing and land on the yellow thing from the other side" and he actually gets a lot of it, even though English isn't his first/main language. Then after 50 tries we finally make it through some ridiculously difficult sequence of jumps and he casually walks into the deadly spiky thing which is impossible to miss and we get to start all over. Thanks, kid.
Oh crap... this is the first mini console that I've seen the games list for and thought "I MUST PLAY THOSE GAMES (again)". I don't know if I'm more surprised by the announcement or my reaction.
@KateGray OPUS: Rocket of Whispers deserves to be on this list because I didn't feel like I was playing a game so much as a game was playing with my emotions. Holy crap it was sad. But amazing.
@tabris95 Spoilers! Or not... I haven't gotten very far into Echo of Starsong yet, but after playing the first two OPUS games I expect to find myself awkwardly holding back tears on the train a lot from here on out.
Honestly I'm surprised Japan doesn't do stuff like this with the Japanese language. Instead, it's kind of the opposite... steal words from other languages (okay, 99.99993% English) and then act like they were always Japanese words to begin with.
@dartmonkey For the record, Japanese people still call individual games "cassettes". Even if they're on discs. Or digital downloads. It's weird. I also bought a lot of import games years ago that I figured I'd eventually get around to, and usually didn't. Years later, I read and speak Japanese and still don't go back and play the ones I kept (I guess they're no longer imports if I live here?) because laziness still prevails.
@gcunit I think that was weeks ago, not years ago. Because even though I own this game and STILL haven't gotten around to playing it, I read these articles about this game and think, "oh man that's cool maybe I should play the game and experience that for myself!" before going off and doing something completely unrelated to video games. So yeah... the last article talked about finding the absolute furthest out-of-bounds edges of the game's map, but this one is about finding an out-of-bounds area that you can actually interact with. As a side note, I think that's pretty cool and maybe I should play the game and experience that for myself!
I have all three scenarios of Shining Force III on Sega Saturn, plus the ultra-rare premium disc. I played through the first several times back in the day, but sadly I never finished any of the others because I didn't have the Japanese skills at the time. I suppose I could try now, but the lack of modern conveniences like being able to take them on the train or put the console in sleep mode sounds painful.
I hope they include levels set in Japan, where the emergency flasher button in your car is apparently actually the "park wherever you want for as long as you want with no consequences" button.
Dang. I read that headline as "The DinoField Chronicle" and got all excited before I read the article and was thoroughly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it still looks like a good game, but where are the dinos???
I think it's logged the 3rd or 4th most hours on my Switch because I wanted to get an 'S' rank on every section of every level of the game. It was tedious, frustrating, and stressful. And yet I loved it because the game is just so incredibly unique. I only wish I had the patience/skill/free time to chain all of those S's together into one gigantic high score. Also, that golden beetle mode is just way too much for me.
It's the same deal in Japan. Also, it went up for pre-order in Japan a few weeks ago, and for whatever reason Nintendo's website absolutely refused to work with my credit card (even though I've used it plenty of times before), but fortunately they didn't sell out immediately like everything else does on that site so eventually I was able to snag a copy. Also also, this being Japan I bet I paid like 800% more than you people in other countries did/will.
Holy crap I'm finally at the final battle on Shining Force on the Genesis [Mega Drive] Collection for like the 30th time in my life after what feels like half a year! I'm going to finish that and then dig into the new OPUS game. Probably. More likely, I'll play through and delete all the demos and free games on my memory card to make more space before Xenoblade 3 fills it to capacity. Meanwhile, my 4-year-old is making good progress in Thomas Was Alone, Figment, Sonic Mania, and Pikuniku, and making me feel just a little uneasy about how GOOD he is at playing all those different games (not to mention how much he demands to play video games despite my best efforts to make him play with physical toys).
I absolutely loved the first two OPUS games so it was an immediate download for me as soon as I found out about it. I'm also going in relatively blind since I've been trying to avoid reading too much about it other than the direct emails from SIGONO.
I like how half the comments here are "THE THING TTLY SUCKED THOSE GAMES SUCK AND EVERYONE AGREES" and the other half are "I'm really looking forward to ___!" Ugh. Internet. It sure would be nice if people didn't just assume that everyone else hates everything as much as they do.
I managed to catch the beginning of the thing by accident and decided to watch. A lot of games didn't excite me terribly, a few seemed pretty interesting, and the very last reveal of the new OPUS game is something I've been waiting a long time for, so it was the first first-day purchase (i.e. I didn't even wait for a big beefy sale or a Nintendo Life review!) I've made in a long time. But overall, I felt there was a decent enough variety of games that everyone could find something that they liked. Apparently I was wrong because the internet.
Back when I was really into collecting games, I would only buy one of those things if absolutely necessary. Then I sold a huge chunk of my collection and went entirely digital and realized how pointless it was.
On the other hand, I still like collecting physical CDs by artists I like, and while I don't mind buying something used, especially if it's an older/rarer release, I refuse to buy it if all the original CD inserts and whatnot (including the super-pointless "obi" spine-card things here in Japan) aren't intact. And then I rip it to my mp3 collection and never listen to the CD because I don't have a CD player.
Ahhh, pointlessness in collecting, how I love thee!
I picked this game up on sale recently and played around on the first few trails. It's super relaxing and easy enough for my 4-year-old to play (not, like, WELL, mind you), and I could easily see it becoming an obsession with all the missions and unlockables and whatnot. It's already been bumped to the top of my backlog, but seeing an event like this makes me want to just jump right in.
Gleargh... I've always wanted to play this game, but I don't know if I want to pay for Nintendo Online for one month since I have so many other things I'm trying to un-back-log before Xenobarf 3 comes out. I'm sort of tempted to just buy it on my 3DS but it's kind of 'spensive for a game I might not get around to... and also I'd have to play it in Japanese which requires more thinking than I care to do on my daily commute. LIFE IS HARD.
I hate that owning that first terrible game on the Gameboy scared me away from the Castlevania series for years, even though I always really wanted to play a lot of the games on this list.
@RainbowGazelle I hunted all over for the Metroid Dread Amiibos (okay, I went to Bic Camera and GEO) on the day of release but bought them on Amazon in the end because they were somehow still being sold at the normal price. As for Min Min, I would have tried hunting slightly harder but it didn't help that she got released on a holiday and I had to spend time with my family. He may only be 4, but I'll never forgive my son.
I really want this Amiibo in box or otherwise. Too bad Amiibo are nigh impossible to find in Japan, unless I want to pay like 300% as much on Amazon, which I kind of don't.
It kind of looks/sounds similar in a number of ways to to Planet Alpha (one of my absolute favorites on Switch) and Old Man's Journey (a very good game that would have been even good-er if it didn't feel so smart-phoney). I'll definitely check it out.
@RobotReptile Guess what... somewhere around level 50 you stop finding seedlings almost entirely. I easily log 10,000 on my daily commute and I get MAYBE 2 a day, when I used to have so many that I had to recycle them pretty regularly. Not to mention the fun pattern of hanging around one of the icons for which I don't have all the decor Pikmin only to be rewarded (if I'm rewarded at all) with a roadside seedling. I think once I hit level 60 in a week or so I'm going to call it quits because I'm already at 20 medals, and the ridiculous amount of effort required for most of the medals remaining isn't going to be fun or interesting.
All I know is that I read the part of the title that says, "Euphoria Star Hunter Schafer", and not knowing what any of that meant I thought, "WOAH, Euphoria Star Hunter" sounds like the coolest job description EVER!"
This is NOT fantastic news because I've been planning for months to (1) finish Shining Force (Genesis Collection), (2) do a culling of demos, free-to-play games, and screenshots on my SD card, (3) finally get around to playing Breath of the Wild, which I bought (plus the DLC) what... 3 years ago?? Come on, Nintendo, I need more time, damn it!
The only RPG (or just G in general) that I want on my Switch more than Panzer Dragoon Saga is Shining Force III.
I wouldn't mind paying money to play Golden Sun (any of them) for the millionth time on my Switch.
I haven't played any of the Mother games yet, but if Mother 3 gets Englishized it seems like as good as a time as any to jump in because I've always wanted to play them.
Skies of Arcadia was probably my favorite game on Dreamcast, but I hated the Gamecube version because I was like 80% of the way through the game when my memory card died and I couldn't finish the game, and I've assume that was part of the original design.
999 is the only game on this list that I've played because playing through Virtue's Last Reward in my second language sounds tedious at best, but I loved it. I don't love the idea of killing games in general, though, because I want everyone to survive, and I know that especially on TV or in a movie, that's not going to happen. As one of the five people in the world who's never played Skyrim this is pretty tempting. On the other hand, as one of the two people in the world who's never played Breath of the Wild, I'd like to get my money's worth on that game first.
