Re: Pikmin Bloom Celebrates Valentine's Day With 'Present Sticker' Gold Seedlings

kurtasbestos

@AmplifyMJ Dang, I'm way behind you at a measly level 83 and only... 40 badges. I should get the final step badge by early next week, but the final expedition badge will probably take well over a year unless they do a bunch more of those crazy events like the one where I was getting 50 expeditions every day.

@Joeynator3000 They have been updating the game... just not in ways that tend to make it feel like "oh boy I sure am glad I didn't quit!" Also, with each update it causes my phone to run worse.

@GogGogGogGog You can increase the limit, and if you walk a lot then it's pretty easy to do.

Re: Feature: Video Game Music That Didn't Need To Go That Hard

kurtasbestos

Did anyone ever play VATLVA for the Sega Saturn? No? Oh. Well, it has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a game, by that Yuzo Koshiro person that a few people might have heard of.

Also, Pen Pen TriIcelon for the Dreamcast... it's meant to be a children's game (I guess), but the weird polka-EDM music is super catchy and ridiculously awesome.

...I'd post a link to either, but, well, I'm lazy. Plus who's REALLY going to read this far into the comments and do research on everyone's suggestions? Whoever you are, I salute you.

Re: Talking Point: What Is The Most Frustrated You've Ever Been With A Video Game?

kurtasbestos

I'm sure I've had plenty of frustrating game encounters throughout my life, but the first few games that come to mind on Switch are Thumper (which I loved and hated at the same time but managed to 100% S-rank the thing), Crypt of the Necrodancer (another awesome game, but I never made it past the second level because it's just too hard), Conduct Together! (getting perfect scores on a lot of those levels was ridiculously frustrating, but it's hard to complain when I only spent like 100 Yen on the thing), and my favorite game to complain about: Earth Atlantis.

Re: Talking Point: What Game Do You Replay Every Year?

kurtasbestos

My games aren't on the list because they're both for Sega Saturn. Every year I tell myself I'm going to play Mr. Bones in fall, then Christmas NiGHTS in winter, and then every year I either forget or get too busy with other stuff to remember how to hook my Saturn up to the TV. Maybe 2023 will be the year!

Re: Here Are Japan's Top 30 Best-Selling Switch eShop Games For 2022

kurtasbestos

I hate that Human: Fall Flat is still on that list when there are so many fantastic indies games that make it to Japan these days. When my students ask me what games I like, the chances they've heard of any of them are slim to none because they barely even know what the eShop is, and if they do, they've probably only heard of that game. Still, I have to give a shout out to the girl in 4th grade who's really into Undertale. Now if I can just convince her to buy Thomas Was Alone (which is not available in Japan/ese).

Re: Best Of 2022: "My Uncle Works At Nintendo" - The Man, The Myth, And The Mendacity

kurtasbestos

I have a friend's wife who works at... a company that does... something for Nintendo. I've had it explained to me like 20 times and I still don't know, but her name is in the credits of Mario Party Superstars, and their family has received two (2) free trips to Nintendo Land in Osaka. Whatever, the point is that I feel like she basically OWES me a job because of how much money I've spent on Nintendo games, and yet every time I bring it up she stops talking to me for some reason.

Re: Review: Manifold Garden - A Remarkable Spectacle Undermined By Benign Puzzles

@williamchyr I just finished this game the other day. Thank you for a fantastic game! It was relaxing and challenging without being too difficult, and absolutely beautiful. I actually kind of wish you had done some sort of tedious "collect X hidden items" thing, only because I wanted to spend more time in every single ridiculously interesting space in the game, but the constant nagging of "I have 20+ games on my backlog that I bought before this game and haven't played yet" compelled me to keep moving on to the next area. At any rate, I loved every minute of the game and I hope you'll come up with more interesting ideas for games in the future!

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Punch-Out!!

Weird... I kind of like the Mike Tyson version, but I love the artwork on the Mr. Dream version. Meanwhile, the Japanese version does nothing for me. Apparently not a lot of people agree with me.

Re: Nintendo's Pikmin Mobile Game Celebrates 1st Anniversary

kurtasbestos

@AmplifyMJ It took me about 5 days to find out that the 1st Anniversary Snack decor event thing works completely differently in Japan... I have to visit a specific chain of convenience stores to pluck a 10,000-step Pikmin. Getting close like with the giant flowers doesn't work, I actually have to be in the store (or at least the parking lot), and of course there aren't any on my daily commute. GRRRR just another reason to want to quit this game. But... but... I'm SO close!

Re: Poll: Bayonetta 3 Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?

kurtasbestos

I feel like I should buy this game because I own the first two, but I was disappointed by the original. It looks and feels like something I should enjoy, but up to the end of the game I kind of had absolutely no idea what I was doing, and didn't have the patience to go back and try to figure it out (plus, my backlog was like "NO TIME! NO TIME!"). I hear 2 is way better... and 3 is even better than that... so I'd like to give them both a chance, but there are just so many more games on my Switch I'd rather attempt first.

Re: Review: Signalis - Brilliantly Tense And Surreal Sci-Fi Survival Horror

kurtasbestos

@Rainz I wish I could "<3" your comment more than once. Unfortunately you can only do it once and that's unacceptable to me! Seriously, though, if the most important thing about a game to someone is the resolution or frame rate (or some other arbitrary performance statistic), I feel like they're totally missing the point of playing games in the first place.

Re: Talking Point: Is The Golden Age Of Licensed Music In Games Over?

kurtasbestos

I remember when the soundtrack to Jet Grind/Set Radio on Dreamcast blew my mind out of my face. Except for the tracks added for the American version... it was the age when people felt like Rob Zombie's music needed to be included in absolutely everything. Around the same time was Rez, a game where I've seen like 3/5 of the artists featured perform live, though that was a different time for me. So I guess... if the music you like shows up in a game, then good for you. I've come to accept that with my eclectic tastes in music it's probably never going to happen again for me.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Worst Game That You Still Love For Some Reason?

kurtasbestos

PenPen TriIcelon! I still don't get why the Dreamcast failed with this gem as part of the launch lineup. Seriously, though, I have some great memories of this not-so-great game. I was fresh into my first year of college and living away from home for the first time... my friends and I would take over the giant TV in our dorm's lounge and play my shiny new Dreamcast, and this game was by far our favorite because of how ridiculous it was. The best part, though, is that the TV was inside of a giant wooden box (I guess so no one would try to steal it?) which made the crazy techno/polka music EXTRA loud and obnoxious, and turning the bass all the way up would cause the entire room to shake. Ahhh, precious memories.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 1st)

kurtasbestos

I borrowed Pikmin 3 from a friend a while back (my Switch is 100% digital, so physically borrowing a game makes me feel like I'm back in the SNES days), and my son and I might have finished everything there is to do. Which is good because I'm ever so tired of asking him "why are are you just standing there???" while I do all the work. I was SO much better at Pikmin than he is when I was 3. In 1984.

In other news, I bought 4~5 games in September, so I have this CRAAAAZY idea that after I finish the current chapter in Xenoblade 3 I might take a break and play some other games before jumping back in because otherwise I'll probably never play anything else.
