Re: Soapbox: The Video Game Camaraderie On r/place Is A Lesson About Community

Kingdom of Loathing (which is not on Switch but without it West of Loathing wouldn't exist) did a similar thing this past Crimbo season, though entirely in black and white. Every time I'd try to make something it would usually be gone the next day. And every time I tried to alter something that didn't really fit the overall theme of the event or the game itself, it would get changed back nearly immediately. But I did find a few tiny corners where my artwork would persist, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that after spending who knows how much time inserting one of my original characters, it actually remained untouched for at least a week until the end of the event. Granted, the pool of people playing Kingdom of Loathing is much smaller than Reddit in general, but sometimes it's nice to find that people on the internet aren't all racist, sexist jerks.

Re: Tributes Pour In For 'Coffee Talk' Developer Fahmi

Well that sucks. I spent my honeymoon in Indonesia and love to see games coming out of places that I've been to and/or that aren't the places where games normally come from, so Coffee Talk has been in my wish list for a long time. I've also had my eyes on Afterlove EP, but now I'm definitely going to get them both out of respect.

Re: My Friend Peppa Pig DLC Will Turn Peppa Pig Into A Peppa Pirate

kurtasbestos

Will we ever get a review of this game? Ever since my 4-year-old figured out how to use the YouTube on our "smart" TV, I've found that Peppa Pig is like 800 times better than the crap he chooses. Recently he's started demanding that I let him playing games, and other than Untitled Goose Game and Pikuniku, I don't really have anything at his level. I'd love to at least try this game, but the price is just a little scary.

Re: DS Cult Classic 'Knights In The Nightmare' Is Coming To Switch

I still have this game and even though I thought it was pretty amazing I never finished it mostly because it was so confusing. But also because I didn't want to miss anything or kill anyone off, which only made it more confusing. I did buy the fancy limited edition that included an art book, though. Then I moved to Japan and a box of books that I sent to myself apparently exploded and that book was lost forever.

Re: The House Of The Dead: Remake Is Alive, Gets Switch Release Date

kurtasbestos

@RobotReptile To be fair, the original Panzer Dragoon on Saturn isn't really all that great of a game to begin with. Sure, it looked and sounded fantastic 27 years ago, but the actual gameplay was never all that great. I played the remake once and waves of nostalgia rushed over me, and then I didn't feel any huge desire to play it again. Kind of like the original.

Re: Review: Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya (3DS eShop / GG)

kurtasbestos

@SportyMarioSonicMix Wow, so many questions!

First, let me say that if you've never played a Shining Force game before, the Game Gear games aren't the best place to start. Find a way to play the original (Genesis/Mega Drive collection on Switch is good, though there are plenty of other ways to find it (and if you can find a way to play Shining Force III then do it because it's easily the best game in the series)), and if you like it, then by all means play these games. Now on to your plethora of questions:

1) Maybe 10~20 hours, depending on how much time you waste resetting the game trying to get better stat gains when your characters level up.
2) The setting and characters are related to the first Shining Force, but the story is so bare-bones that you won't be missing much if you don't play that first. Still, you should play that game first.
3) No, you won't feel lost, you'll just feel slightly more attached to the characters. Maybe.
4) I've never played any of those games!
5) I played like 10 minutes of one Fire Emblem game, and the fact that battles take place on a grid is probably the only thing that makes the games seem comparable.
6) If you exit a battle your characters keep any experience and gold/items acquired, and when you re-enter the battle everything resets to the original state.
7) No, every Shining Force game features a set number of battles that occur as the story progresses.
8) Uhhhhhh... not many. And not much. I'm not your Google.
9) That's tricky... Shining Force is in a constant battle with Xenoblade for my favorite series of games, and even though they're both JRPGs, they're also completely different beasts. The first three Shining Force games are absolutely amazing, and each is like 600 times better than the last. Because of the hardware, the Game Gear Shining Forces are probably only good if you liked the original series. Also, Shining Force CD is a compilation of the first 2 GG Shining Force games, and it's SO MUCH better than those games are. A few years ago I re-played the Shining Force games on my 3DS, and because of the nostalgia factor they were pretty great. If I didn't have that, though, they'd be pretty average at best.

The moral of the story is that if you're at all interested in this game, go play as many other, better Shining Force games as you can first.

P.S. Any Shining Force games released after III are crap. Or at least, they don't resemble the first 7-ish games in the series and aren't worth mentioning here. I guess Shining Force Feather was kind of okay, though.

Re: Video: Some Of Us Prefer Zelda: Majora's Mask Over Ocarina Of Time Because We're Right

kurtasbestos

I've tried and failed SO many times (okay, maybe like 3 at most) to play Ocarina of Time, but I just can't get into that game. At the same time, I've always wanted to play Majora's Mask because it just seemed so much more interesting, but because of my out-of-control OCD I can't play it without finishing the other one first. Maybe I should go buy it on my 3DS while I still have the time and then never play it. Or the other one.

Re: Feature: Our Nintendo 3DS And Wii U Memories, In Infographic Form

kurtasbestos

#1 for me on 3DS is KORG DSN-12, which isn't surprising because I still use that and KORG M01D nearly every day. Mostly I'm just glad that it beat out that stupid badge thing. Also StreetPass Mii Plaza (though I am proud to say that I finished EVERY game in that thing 100%).

Over on Wii U, Xenoblade X in first place is also not a surprise, but man oh jeez, 1281 hours... is. That's over 53 full days of my life!

Re: This Good Smile Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nia Figure Can Now Be Pre-Ordered For $259.99

kurtasbestos

There was a point that I owned pretty much any and all Xenoblade-related swag (including X). Then with Xenoblade 2 they started releasing these ridiculously expensive figures that my wife probably wouldn't want me to display in our living room for some reason. Maaaybe I can get away with the Siren-robot-thing, though $100ish for a dust-collecting statue is still pretty hard to justify.

Re: Poll: The End Is Coming, But How Much Will You Miss The Wii U And 3DS eShop?

kurtasbestos

I still carry my 3DS with me every day, though I use it to make music and haven't touched a game in who knows how long (which is a shame because there are still a ton on there that I haven't finished). I've been thinking of picking up a second so I can have a second copy of my favorite KORG synthesizers to use in theoretical live shows, but that's a lot of money for something I might never use. Well, now I guess I have to make the decision soon.

Re: Japan's Top 100 Best-Selling Video Games Of 2021, According To Famitsu

kurtasbestos

Ugh. There are SO MANY fantastic games in the eShop in Japan that all lose to Human Fall Flat (which might be okay; I haven't played it) and all the major releases, because Japanese people tend to follow trends instead of searching out good stuff on their own. Maybe Nintendo Life needs a Japanese-language version. Eh? Eh??? I know a guy who can do the translating! But if he's busy, I can do it.

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles Launches On Switch This June

kurtasbestos

@Snatcher Ehhh... my wife and I tried to watch it, but just didn't get into it. Granted, we're both not into anime, and we have no interest in the whole "everyone carries swords" era of Japanese history (she's Japanese, by the way). But for me, it was mostly because as an elementary school teacher, I got pretty tired of kids coming up to me like 10 times a day and asking me if I knew about it. Not to mention the wall-to-wall swag that all the kids had. That's why I think it's funny that it's all but disappeared from the schools, and if I ask my kids if it's still popular, they're like "nah, now we're all into [some random thing I've never heard of because I'm old and crotchety]". And to be fair, it wasn't as annoying as the Pikotaro craze a few years back... man am I glad that everyone forgot all about that guy.
