Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream?

boxyguy

apart from the missing concert hall, this game is the best the series has ever been. user generated content does so much heavy lifting to keep cutscenes and dialogue refreshing

things may slow down once im done creating all the main miis i want but its still a very infectious gameplay loop, and ive barely touched the palette house stuff yet

Re: Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Was Reportedly Feature-Complete A Year Ago

boxyguy

i have no idea if this is a real pattern, but i feel like nintendo is experimenting with games being "complete experiences" at launch for this era again. besides donkey kong and NS2 editions, none of their NS2 games come with promised "free updates" announced early that span the next 2 years

packed rosters for mario kart and tennis, kirby air riders existing, and now TL. if dlc does come i predict its work that starts after the game launches, but letting the base game still stand on its own

Re: Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Was Reportedly Feature-Complete A Year Ago

boxyguy

@Bluelink45 having played the game for dozens of hours already and i love it but i will say, did encounter a island designer glitch.

some items would appear invisible, and when i tried to exit the island design mode it soft locked me. thankfully the autosave feature restarted me right to the split second point i dropped items down, but for sure something to look into for a patch

Re: Review: Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream (Switch) - BREAKING NEWS: Mii Life Is Still Bizarre, Hilarious, And A Bit Samey

boxyguy

@Princess_Lilly quite literally yes, as a life sim focused on custom characters and their relationships with each other, it absolutely will affect how people play and approach the game

nintendo also made the statement back then that theyd promise to make the next installment more inclusive for everyone too, so this isnt some hidden thing nintendo is keeping on the down low

Re: Review: Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream (Switch) - BREAKING NEWS: Mii Life Is Still Bizarre, Hilarious, And A Bit Samey

boxyguy

very interesting. i remember hearing similar issues of the 3ds game feeling repetitive after a while back then too. im still gonan give this game a shot myself, having this essentially be a bigger version of the 3ds game sounds great to me

after getting used to the same events and dialogue playing out the same way on 3ds, more user-generated prompts and designs is exactly what this game needs

Re: "We Did So Many Retakes" - The Tomodachi Life Team Was Determined To Make Farts Sound Just Right

boxyguy

being able to input our own text and have it turn into lingo regularly said around the island is my fav implementation of user-generated content

after playing the 3ds game for years i got familiar and tired of all the dialogue and scenarios playing out the same. lingo adds a whole new context and awkwardness to interactions i love it

the fact this game took 9 years of planning, with no signs of development hell or setbacks, gives me hope this game was made with as much passion as it couldve

Re: Nintendo Details The Benefits Of Playing Tomodachi Life On Switch 2

boxyguy

i can only imagine a NS2 edition isnt out yet because they straight up only had time to finish the NS1 version. a NS2 edition makes too much sense. mouse controls, upgrading from 70>100 miis, fixing inevitable framerate drops from over designing the island

heck i hope we get full touch screen support soon at least, i so instinctively want to tap prompts and miis more naturally than with buttons

Re: Miyamoto Isn't So Sure About A Smash Bros. Style Movie

boxyguy

a smash bros movies seems way too ambitious for it to be worth it tbh, theres no way they could do it justice and spotlight dozens of characters and properties under one movie. unless they wanna go the MCU route and build it up over a decade, or just be "references: the movie" which mario already covers

Re: Round Up: The Final Previews Are In For Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream

boxyguy

its staying power is a good point, i played hundreds of hours back on 3ds, but even back then i remember people saying they got bored after a week. it really is the kinda game you gotta find your own fun in. the fact its essentially the 3ds game but bigger and better is reassuring to me at least. im gonna devour this game is looks so tasty

Re: Nintendo Remains Tight-Lipped About Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Future

boxyguy

im fine with them taking as long as they need on a new game. i give it the same weight as a new 3d mario, theyre meant the last the entire generation and it'll be done when its done

i agree the next game really has to shake things up. im ready to move on from the decorating sim priority, unless they somehow want to outdo pokopia and TL's flexibility, and bring it back to the characters and life sim roots again

Re: Nintendo Shows Off Icon Design Proposals For Switch 2's 'C' Button

boxyguy

on one hand i get. i think a speech bubble looks infinitely better and understandable but it might look too similar to the capture button icon, and all the other examples have their own vague abstractness

in an era where switch 2 loves to have overly specific and blunt names, i can see why they'd play it boring and safe with C

Re: Mario Kart World Could Be Getting A Battle Mode Update

boxyguy

i hope this comes with new arenas too. grabbing sections of the open world to use as arenas makes sense but im surprised how, boring the choices feel?

just out of boredom i scouted the open world to find new potential arena locations, but all i could really think of is the starview peak courtyard

Re: Poll: What's Your Favourite 3DS Model?

boxyguy

as a pure aesthetic i have such a nostalgic love for the original 3ds, it felt like the most premium handheld ive ever seen. the glossy finish, the sleek yet blocky build, the pure black top half to help the 3d pop (plus the 3D icon lit up), the extendable stylus was my beloved

new 3ds xl is my go to now, but i will always love how the original model looks

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Mario Tennis Fever?

boxyguy

It's a really fun game, but my major burns are the adventure and course selection. I still can't believe the beginning of the adventure is the most fleshed out section but also just an hour of non stop tutorials, it at least gets better after that

I like the immersion of the basic courses all being near each other so you see them all in the bg of matches, but I don't think there's enough "mario" themed courses? Waluigi pinball and the flower kingdom are honestly the only ones. I dont even need them to have gimmicks, the fever rackets are hectic enough, but we couldve had more interesting biomes for the sand course, ice course, ect

Other than that it's been a blast. Gameplay if fun, I get into online matches fast, single player is decent enough if you wanna 100% the tower challenges. I wish we had more costumes tho, there's way too much untapped potential now that MKW showed us what we could have. Some animations can also look kinda stiff, bowser Jr's victory dance looks like its from the gamecube era lol

Re: Round Up: The Previews Are In For Super Mario Bros. Wonder - Switch 2 Edition + Meetup In Bellabel Park

boxyguy

does anyone get this weird vibe with multiplayer modes that have no extrinsic reward for playing them? even games as casual as mario kart and mario party have rank systems and currency to collect. especially as a single player i have hard time playing these lil side modes just for the sake of it, you definitely need local play family and friends to get the most out of it

Re: This Mario Tennis Fever Ad Is Giving Us Big Nintendo Wii Vibes

boxyguy

@squiddu-real the vibe i get with nintendos current direction is theyre "giving us we want, but at a price", cause on paper theres a lot to love about this era

the switch 2 is as powerful as we could hope by nintendo standards, the exclusives are solid to great (mkw is divisive but i still think its a fun, ambitious game), NSO is re-releasing games that were dormant for decades, even casual gimmicks like the mic and camera are back. its all really cool stuff, but always sliiighty more expensive than you think it should be

Re: This Mario Tennis Fever Ad Is Giving Us Big Nintendo Wii Vibes

boxyguy

im intrigued by this title cause as far as i can tell, its undoing practically all the damage previous mario sports games did last era. lots of characters, stage gimmicks, side modes, no "free updates", plus the fever rackets adding more skill expression

im not just getting wii vibes, this is almost like power tennis gamecube vibes where a party/multiplayer game is packed and allowed to be complete right out the gate. but $70 packed? nintendo is definitely betting on that

Re: Labo VR Will Reportedly Be Compatible With Virtual Boy For Switch Online

boxyguy

@DennisLofgren i can see that, but i do feel like we're past the point of authenticity when the default way to play most NSO games are with joycons, with their respective controllers being paid extras

i dont have the nso expansion so i cant really comment on how much the subscribers care. still for such a high tier, skipping the option to play directly on switch is weird to me

Re: Reminder: Cult Of The Lamb Summons Its "Biggest Update Ever" For Switch

boxyguy

been playing the expansion on steam and loving it. addictive gameplay loop is honestly best the way to describe it, juggling combat in dungeons with management in your base can easily chain to me playing for hours

the expansion adds new things to juggle which could overwhelm new players? but its a sidestory you can play at your own pace, and theres already a cheat code level of customization to play the game at your own comfort. great game all around

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition?

boxyguy

ignoring the $5 price for a moment, ive come to terms that NH doubles down on being a fast-paced decorating sim rather than a slow-paced life sim like NL. theres a LOT i still wish NH kept from past games and did better, but for what it chooses to be its still a fantastic game

i didnt think id get the decorating bug, but once NH smoothed out the process it became addicting. i have fond memories of slowly building up a corner of my island, the smallest tasks serving new purposes with DIYs and nook miles, and i respect it for turning AC into one of nintendo's top pillar franchises

that said, they really pushed hard on the items and decorating aspects, and i think we're due for the next game to prioritize the villagers and NPCs again. i need them to be more interesting and interactive with each other, i want NPCs to have their cute lil shops again, be a better multiplayer experience with less menus and more side content. NH is a great time, but i feel like the series is just getting started, theres so much growing left to do

Re: Review: Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - A Cheap Upgrade, But Lacking Substance

boxyguy

trying out the mouse controls for decorating reaffirmed my thoughts that i dont really play mouse controls, i endure them

i still have to jump back to button controls for certain actions, button shortcuts get switched up and throw me off, theres a delay when you lift the joycon off the ground when i wanna reposition the mouse movement

i could probably get used to it, but theres always a level of clunk that makes me switch back to button decorating, way more comfy

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 3.0.0 Patch Notes - Switch 2 And Switch New Content, Features And More

boxyguy

crafting from materials directly from your storage is huge omg, thats been such a pace killer for me. even more important now that crafting is back in the spotlight this update

i still question the hotel essentially being HHP lite, but what it undoubtedly will do is make your island feel way more lively with the hotel guests walking around the island. i even saw one inside nooks cranny, so hope they walk around the museum and cafe too. an unintended bonus is that we have loads of new villager dialogue to sift through as well

Re: "I Don't See AI Taking Over" - Split Fiction Director Josef Fares On The Rise Of AI

boxyguy

@axelhander you talk a lot about what goes into the mindset and practice of being creative, but I'm starting to think you don't really have any creative hobbies at all

Yes ai is a tool but if someones idea has to start with "Hey tool give me a creative idea" that already tells me that person has nothing interesting to say, and what makes art created by a person far more interesting to me, regardless of quality

For some people art and creations are just products made for a side hussle and that's fine, but they shouldn't be lumped in with people who actual enjoys creating and understand the fun is in the process, not learning how to get really good at writing ai prompts

Re: ICYMI: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gets A Free Switch 2 Update Next Week

boxyguy

i enjoy the direction of the major update being free and making the smaller enhancements the paid option, but the monkeys paw in the back of my mind is still telling me theyre gonna charge a SEPARATE dlc as a side mode later. like in a year we'll get the full bundle as ACNH NS2 Edition + Minigame Island for $80 or something lol

that said im still looking forward to this update! i recently beat HHP and unlocked villager house decorating on my own island, its really gotten me in the mood for more decorating again

Re: Mario Tennis Fever Overview Trailer Serves Up A Host Of Fresh Features

boxyguy

gotta hand it to nintendo this looks like the first mario sports game in years that actually looks like a finished game by launch. characters and fever rackets are varied, the courses and modes have impactful gimmicks, and theyre not using online/rank modes as an excuse for lack of content

the fact they didnt even announce free updates are coming is at least telling me they believe the game can stand on its own as is, it has my attention but ill see how things play out

Re: Drag x Drive Devs Tried Wheelchair Basketball In Prep For Game

boxyguy

DxD has been such a small game and team with big ambitions behind it. It makes me wonder why this small project didn't get a larger scope, but i also wonder why this small game has had so many last minute updates

Did this game do well, do bad? Is this Nintendo realizing the potential for more DxD content? It's still a unique and fun game, people just don't like the gritty and bland presentation
