Kirby Air Ride, I think it's fair to say, didn't receive all that warm a welcome when it launched back in 2003.
With lucky GameCubers already marinating in the delicious driving juices of Mario Kart: Double Dash and F-Zero GX, Kirby's cute and chaotic style of racing just didn't seem to stick with the mainstream, and, as a result, it's become known as one of those Marmite efforts. You either gelled with its new approach to slinging yourself around tracks or you didn't.
For me personally, I've always enjoyed Air Ride's novel take on track racing. I also think it's a game that sings especially strongly in multiplayer, once everyone who's racing fully knows what they're doing. Indeed, this was the first GameCube title that allowed for LAN setups via broadband adapters, so the multiplayer was 100% where the gravy was at.

Taking everything into account, though, and despite my love for the OG, a sequel in the form of Kirby Air Riders was an unexpected announcement during the run-up to Switch 2. I certainly didn't have it on my Switch 2 bingo card. So it's lucky, then, given that it's a bit of curveball, that it's actually very good.
If I had to guess the two main issues people had with Kirby Air Ride back in the day, it's a fairly even split between a lack of meaningful single-player content and how messy the game can seem to the uninitiated as races (and minigames) play out. Nintendo has obviously taken note of the first issue here, and as a result, we've got a sprawling story mode with multiple paths and endings and a metric ton of collectible content to keep you busy. It's also got a very gritty and serious sci-fi tone, which is so at odds with the style of the actual racing that you can't help but love it.
However, on the second problem, well, you'll have to suck eggs and learn to play the game, I'm afraid. It all makes sense when you get into the sweet Air Ridin' groove. It also wasn't broken in the first place, so bravo to Masahiro Sakurai for sticking to his guns and keeping the soul of it all intact.

On that note: Air Riding. It's not karting. This style of racing is a different beast entirely, and there's a learning curve in getting a hang of the basics. In Air Riders, you take control of a rider from an ever-growing roster of Kirby and his pals, each of whom has an impressive variety of stats relating to their driving abilities, along with their own specials and tricks to pull off mid-race. Stuff like turbo boosts, area of effect attacks, and lots of other stuff I won't spoil the fun of unlocking.
Once you've chosen Waddle De— I mean...whoever your favourite is, you then pick a machine. These aren't just different for the sake of being different, nor do they simply have varying degrees of speed, boost, handling, and so on. No, in Air Riders, there's depth. Proper depth. And it comes in the form of an impressive menagerie of unique machines that work in fundamentally different ways.
We've all seen the default Warp Star that gives you a nice balance of ground and air speed, but then you've got other options like the incredibly fast but terribly fragile Paper Star, the charging Tank Star, the slippery Slick Star, and even a few that transform or straight-up blink like electricity from point to point on a track as they slow then boost.

There's a lot more to take in than you may expect at first blush, and especially if you've listened to naysayers over the years who say it's shallow. Get a few seasoned riders into a race and things can get hugely intense.
With rider and machine chosen and on the track, you then get down to slinging yourself around. Movement forwards is automatic, the number one mental hurdle for newcomers. Your job as pilot is to make sure you utilise every opportunity on the track as it presents itself; to gain maximum forward momentum, by spinning, shifting around the course to hit boosts and jumps, and hammering enemies for mini-boosts or copy abilities to whale on your opponents with.
Once you 'get' it, it's incredibly moreish, and almost zen-like in the focus that's required to take down another rider who knows what they are doing. Feels too automated? You're not trying hard enough.

Also at the core of the racing, beyond the automatic nature of travelling forward, you have the all-important boost/brake button. Holding down 'B' will slow your machine right down until it eventually stops. It also, at the same time, charges up your turbo boost. So there's a strategy at the heart of everything here, and it's a pleasing one in how it relates to some very nicely designed tracks.
You want to know these tracks well to target the best jumps, to know the best opportunities to slow right down for a full boost (tight corners are the most obvious example) or overtake, and to find these opportunities on any given course, whilst also battling a constant stream of other riders and NPC enemies, makes for an addictive and satisfying thing to settle into. It's manic in all the right ways.
This sequel, too, is made all the more satisfying by some visually spectacular race sequences spliced throughout tracks. There's a mix of sections composed of proper, tight-corner racing alongside flashy on-rails sequences where you whip between rails to collect/dodge and set yourself up to boost into whatever comes next.

Nintendo has gone to town on these rail sequences, with some elaborately cool parts where riders tumble and spin through all sorts of wild scenarios, and the game does well to give you just enough control at all times, and enough ways to steal a lead or damage your opponents, that even when you're not fully in control of your machine, and even when weapons are auto-fire on proximity for a lot of the time, it still feels like you're needing to think quickly and know the rules, tracks and machines inside out to make an impact, especially in the online mode.
The story mode is the real big addition, and it makes a good impression. I won't ruin the narrative (and it's not much to write home about), but the setup, where you race through 11 chapters composed of levels full of races and minigames, works well.
Between each race and challenge, you're returned to your vehicle as it blasts along a road through each stage, and this gives you three options at all times on how to proceed, so there's variety along the way, until you hit a mini-boss or boss race battle. It also gives solo players lots to unlock, there's replayability in returning for alternate endings, and it acts as a fantastic training mode for the delights of online.

Before I touch on the online, though, you've also got the returning City Trial, Air Ride, and Top Down racing modes. These generally remain largely unchanged from what was offered up in the original game. City Trial gives you five minutes to gather as many collectibles as you can whilst blasting other racers before being dropped into a minigame for a grand finale, and it's as chaotically frenzied as ever. Top Down mode is honestly addictive as all hell when you get into it (think Codemasters' Grand Prix Sim on the Commodore 64 but with crazy courses and you're 90% of the way there).
It's the online, though, that's the real king. I had limited time with it for this review, but I luckily found matches in Air Ride and City Trial modes against a few ferocious competitors and I couldn't be happier with the performance. No input lag, no issues connecting, and in races it was buttery smooth, as it is across all modes.
The City Trial and Air Ride races really do come alive here, and I implore you to dig in, learn how to drive the machine of your choice well and reap the benefits of some surprisingly fierce competition - alongside all the jumping into targets, gliding competitions, and events where you try to eat more than everyone else. I mean, Kirby gonna Kirby.

As a solo game, Kirby Air Riders is a step up, then. Each of its modes brings over 100 collectible bits and bobs to unlock and create a picture scene from the story, so there's plenty to work towards. The campaign itself also does a suitably Kirby-esque job in starting out relatively normal on the narrative front before ending up in some far-out sci-fi states. The whole thing also looks and plays as good as anything I've played on Switch 2 thus far, so you're in for a treat on that front, my friends.
I've also got to make a special point here to mention the surprisingly deep machine customisation on offer. I was actually a little shocked! There are loads of textures, icons, unlockable pixel art, and all manner of ways to truly make all of your machines your own. It's a lot, and it's very, very welcome for solo fans.
Onto niggles, and I will say that the chaos — all of the huge icons and speeding around amidst groups of riders, especially in City Trials — can feel aimless at times. And it's still every bit the Marmite experience. The story is silly, and most of the side games, which see you hit air targets, make long jumps, and so on, well, they're not exactly riveting.

And in local multiplayer, whilst playing on the same system, we spotted that you lose the ability to see the stats for your chosen rider and machines, which sort of takes away the ability to inspect and learn on the fly. Let's hope a little tweak can be patched in on that one.
Overall, then, I know it can be hard to make Kirby converts, but I genuinely believe Kirby Air Riders deserves them. This is a huge big colourful beast of a sequel. It's jam-packed to the rafters with stuff to find, to unlock, and collect, and it has proper depth. There's a ton of machines, loads of riders and courses, and — should you get stuck in and learn and "git gud" — you'll find an alternative to the usual kart-racer style of business that absolutely deserves its place on any podium.
Conclusion
Kirby Air Riders is a cracking sequel that gives solo players much more to dig into with its story campaign, whilst also bringing all-new levels of shiny graphics, bells and whistles to its returning City Trial, Air Ride, and Top Down Racing modes. This is a chaotic and frenzied racer, there's no doubt, but it's got depth for those who wish to learn and plenty of competition to be had both online and at harder difficulties for diehards.
With lots of excellent tracks, riders and machines to unlock, sat alongside some surprisingly deep machine customisation, Kirby's latest air riding adventure is off to a strong start. Oh, and that soundtrack!

Super excited to jump into this one in a couple of hours when it releases here. It's not going to be a big hit with the casual masses I don't think but just from the demo I know it's going to be an easy 10/10 for me.
Glad it got a good review happy for everyone who is picking it up. Might be a me problem but I can't justify the price and the Nintendo Switch 2 game pricing makes me be more selective were as on the Nintendo Switch I'd buy all first party games.
I picked up Hades II physical at £37.99 just shipped and got Metorid Prime 4 pre-ordered at £49.99. So sadly I can't get Kirby as well.
There is no mention of the Kirby Air Riders amiibo in this review. Were they not able to be tested in time with the review copy?
Never had any doubt. Still can't believe this is happening, and tomorrow no less! Game's gonna eat up so much of my time.
@turnmebackwards I feel you on the game prices. Back on Switch I found myself picking up most first party games that I was on the fence for but with Switch 2 I've already been skipping games like Hyrule Warriors and Pokemon Legends ZA that I might have been tempted by at a lower price point. This game and DK are the only two so far that I haven't really minded the asking price for.
I’m genuinely curious about what the sales figures will be with this one. This is certainly the oddest launch year title for the Switch 2 without a doubt.
After the beta test, I found this one to be incredibly niche, which is a great thing. I didn’t like it at all, but I’m glad it exists because I am happy that such a niche gaming experience got such a big opportunity.
Judging from the poll yesterday, this game is destined to be another marmite racer. I love kart racers, hell I even bought the Nickelodeon ones, but I just don't like marmite
I feel this can be the closest to an F-Zero GX2 we will ever get and that makes me happy and sad at the same time.
Can't wait and I'm not even that big of a Kirby fan... but Sakurai always delivers.
My goat. So dang excited.
@Handy_Man We don't have them yet, although they are inbound.
There is a learning curve and it's chaotic. Well.. Sadly reviewers don't know how to play games these days. Which indeed results in the score.
And I see this in most reviews about this game. People not understanding the game or how the game is supposed to be played.
Review quality really has been lacking lately.
@BenAV Also me, as well. Actually, I borrowed DK from a friend (although I'll probably buy a copy with the DLC if it ever goes on sale), so this is my first "real" Switch 2 game purchase and I've had the system basically since launch.
I have always found the icons and UI in every Sakurai game I've tried very offputting. It's always seemed strange that it's enough to put me off a game, but I really dislike them.
the game looks fun, but I'm not sure if I can get past it!
@chiptoon actually ... the UI in Sakurai games is always done by his UI-award winning wife... and as with any good artist, you can always recognize her work because of her unique style
@BenAV
Dang, you skipped ZA? You could put hundreds of hours into that game, easily. It's awesome.
Yeah, this one is definitely going to join my collection at some point. Can't wait to get started, but as usual, not a day one purchase for me, personally. I'll patiently await a good deal. But it's going to be a fun holiday at the end of the year with this game!
@rallydefault I don't think I would have liked it very much based on everything I've seen. Honestly I probably would have skipped it even if it was cheaper but I might have at least been slightly tempted instead of having zero interest.
I’m interested. I played quite a bit of the original GC game, only because my friends would share a copy or play multiplayer together. I won’t jump in at $70 USD but I hope those who do really enjoy it
Hyrule Warriors, now this and then Metroid Prime 4 and Marvel Cosmic Invasion next month. So much to play. Really glad this is reviewing well, I really enjoyed the test ride.
I cant wait to be Bandana Waddle Dee for the rest of my life 😁
Pre-ordered and ready to go!
PS—Is a ‘learning curve’ really a con? This has been a part of video games since Space Invaders, Pac Man, etc. Dog forbid that one has to practice to get better at the game… Meh…Strange comment…
For me, challenge and learning curves just pull me deeper into the game, especially when it comes to racing / battling games like this. Sorry guy, but it’s a pro!
I'm a little fatigued with Mario Kart considering that it's been hogging the limelight for over a decade now (I have yet to play MKW), but this looks a lot more exciting and offers something a little different (and I love the amiibo concept as well, though the prices are bordering on ridiculous). Seems a bit odd to have two major Nintendo-published racing games release in such close proximity to one another given how lacklustre the Switch 2 library is at present, but I hope that this will also shine as an evergreen title and propel Kirby to superstar status (no pun intended).
@Handy_Man : I had been wondering that too.
@BenAV : I really wanted to grab Legends ZA (I'm still on Switch 1), but the announcement of paid DLC so early on put me off, especially for the already increased asking price across both platforms (which is less of a consequence for American players, as the prices have remained consistent over there, but the Switch 1 version's price is AU$10 higher than previous entries, and AU$30 more for the Switch 2 version, making it a harder pill to swallow, and I would like to avoid double-dipping as I would like to grab a complete physical edition if such materialises later).
If I could buy a Switch 2, this would be a day 1 purchase for me. When I do eventually buy the console, I'm getting this game immediately.
Good review, and good it looks to be a hit for fans of the game.
When it comes to sales I think think this is gonna be more a Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment than a Donkey Kong Bananaza but might be a sleeper hit.
This game will sell 10 copies and I'll be one of them! First time in months my Switch 2 will see the light of day!
The review reads like a 9 for me. I hope it really sells well. Games like this (full of content and polished) deserve to succeed
Never seriously played Air Ride, but I jumped on this game because it’s made by Sakurai and his Sora team, it’ll have loads of new content BECAUSE it’s made by Sakurai and company, and it’s clearly a must-have for any Kirby fan. Even just listening to the music on Nintendo Music has been a unique way to get hyped.
I got a head start from the demo thanks to starting out poorly, but winning a few Stadiums and almost all the races in the end, so I’m not intimidated by the learning curve. Challenge accepted!
I got it pre-loaded as soon as I could, I had a blast with the Global Test and can't wait for the full game
I will be playing this game at launch, but I'm happy for those that choose not to and go and comment on a review that they won't be playing the game for one reason or another.
The first two cons are pretty much the same and don't seem like cons at all in the first place. What's the problem if there's a learning curve? Is the process of learning not fun? Are the tutorials bad?
I'm seriously really excited about this one. City Trial during the demo was phenomenal and Im so happy about the substantial single player content
Sooooo excited!!
I can't wait. This is so exciting! A new Kirby Air Riders game is something to be excited about.
@ShadLink There are plenty of competitive games with tons of depth that still design and tutorialsise their mechanics in a way that makes the game instantly accessible and enjoyable. If being good at a game is a prerequisite for having fun, that seems like a failure in design to me.
@Stormkyleis I am going to guess the tutorial will be very similar to those in the Global Test, and those were absolutely great tutorials. And explained the gameplay really easily to me.
I never played the original, so I did take a look at the tutorials. And because of it I had a blast with the Global Test.
Currently (baed on the GT) I would give this game somewhere between 9,10 and 9,20/10.
@Munchlax the tutorials in the GT were great, like I said here. Without having prior knowledge I could pick up the game within 10 minutes.
This just feels like that game reviewer who failed at the tutorial of Cuphead over and over again. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpNBLRKAcg0
I never played the GC original and was hesitant about Air Riders, but after seeing the 2nd Direct and the depth of everything on offer, I was sold. The global Test Ride provided a little taste of what was to come, and now PJ’s endorsement will have me picking up my preorder eagerly this Friday!
The single-player content and retro Top Ride mode looked great to me, so thanks for the confirmation PJ! I know I’ll enjoy the story mode and unlocking everything. And the depth of customization aspect and overall cuteness may even tempt my daughters into playing.
Slinging yourself around the track seems like an apt description of how the game plays. I’m going into it with an open mind (as in, this is not MK) and will just enjoy the ride. 😁
I decided to get this at launch instead of waiting for a potential sale after all because of the Pokopia Key Card mess. For all we know, Mario Tennis Fever could be the final true physical 1st party Switch 2 game outside of "Switch 2 Editions".
Actually playing the game however will have to wait until after beating Prime 4. The surprise shadow drop of Tomb Raider Definitive Edition yesterday already means I'm going to need to scrap my plan of replaying Prime 2 and 3 prior to Prime 4.
I usually don't pay a lot of attention to metacritic, but it is interesting to see that this is considerably higher rated than its predecessor. This game is basically the perfect recapitulation of the Nintendo cycle.
I love the fact if has a good difficulty curve to it!
@ear_wig having 'game has a learning curve' as a con is extremely insane tbh. Like games can and should have learning curve. Having insane difficulty spikes might be a con, but having a learning curve as a negative is just weird. Idk if that comes from the fast, ready and easy world we live in. might as well have 'game uses controls', or 'game makes you think' as a con
My brothers and I are so excited for this game, with Air Riders being the main selling point for them to upgrade to Switch 2. I got the game and my amiibo pre-ordered. Had a great time with the Global Test Ride. This is the sequel I’ve wanted for so long and cannot believe its happening. I’m overjoyed to see they hit the mark again.
Thank you very much Mister O'Reilly! The review sounds really positive and you convinced me to buy Air Riders day one, even though I still have to beat the Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake.
I read the whole review, before I looked up the score. I guess this means, that I am really interested in Air Riders.
I am really glad, especially for Air Ride fans. How often does stuff like this happen? And it is even a success.
the learning curve is has me excited tbh. its like saying smash bros has a learning curve, but as a sakurai game i can still expect the "easy to learn hard to master" approach he's so good at handling
i see why its a con for some, the previous article had people pretty cynical playing the demo for the first time. but i still found my fun in it and im intrigued enough to play and learn more, it looks like a packed game
Wish the review mention if you are forced to play as Kirby in Story Mode?
Is there any ranking system online? Like points for what postion you come (like in Mario Kart)?
@turnmebackwards Currys have Prime for 45 quid at the moment on pre-order
I think I'm a bit oversaturated with expensive racers at the moment to consider yet another. I'm happy this one is being reviewed favorably, but the $100 CAD price tag is making me a bit more selective with what I'm picking up these days.
Looks like a good game for those who are excited about it. I'm just not feeling it at all. I didn't care for the original game either and felt it was a boring and overrated game. This one is obviously much better but I don't see myself ever playing this. Hope others enjoy it though
There is a surprisingly steep learning curve as I found out in the Global Test Ride but, unusually for me, I felt motivated to master it!
But to hear it's rewarding from someone who's played the full thing is also reassuring.
Looking forward to playing this soon!
Extremely excited to get my copy tomorrow when it’s available, this and Animal Crossing will probably be taking up a lot of my game time 😌
It looks awful. Ive noticed Gamecentral give it 4 out of 10
You guys gave it 8/10 whilst metro gave it 4. Fairly similar to zelda a few weeks ago - I used to buy games if they reviewed well by both of you, but there's been some wild variation in scores of late 🤣
Proof that the game is as awesome as I thought it was. If I ever get a Switch 2 someday, this will be a high priority purchase for me.
Why are the main complaints that it's too hard for beginners? There's lots of games that had no complaints that are much harder. There are so many lessons too for those starting out!
@Yydeckard Not for Switch 2 they don't.
This seems too fast paced for me. This might be the first game that actually triggers a real life seizure because I always ignore the warnings.
@Slideaway1983 The Metro is trash when it comes to videogames.
Nice! Can't wait ti put my hands on it.
PS: Metro Game Central SHOULD BE FORBIDDEN! No way they give a score of 4/10 to every Nintendo game... That's insane. How can we complain to Metacritic?
The game prices on Switch 2 have completely killed my spending. I've only bought 1 game in six months for a new console. That's bonkers really.
Shame, as I would have taken a punt on this for £40. I wonder if it has been worth it for them.
Definitely the racing game of the year for me, can’t wait to dive in tomorrow.
Mine has just been posted! And I can’t wait!!! Looking forward to this and it looks amazing. Mario might have to take some well earned rest from his world for a while now!
It’s Kirby time so let’s a _____ EAT AND RIDE!
What the heck does "Marmite" (adjective) mean?
Glad to hear you liked it. My copy is on the way but in the meantime I'm just going to play Kirby Air Ride on my Gamecube. There is a learning curve because I remember being awful at it at first but the more I played the more it started to click with me.
Thanks for the review, I've never particularly minded the "chaotic" gameplay (despite never being that good at it, mind you) while I absolutely wanted more single-player content as much as I enjoyed the original Air Ride as is so this is perfect for me - so looking forward to starting the full game as soon as my copy arrives!
Sounds like a solid game with a solid score! I already have the game preordered and ready to go! I’m just super excited to delve into a Sakurai passion project, the man and his team make such addicting, simple yet deep video games that have high replayability and focus on fun. They just have a certain… je ne sais quoi to them.
If this game didn’t gel with you during the Global Test ride, PLEASE just give it time to simmer. As the review states, there is a learning curve despite the fact the game only uses three buttons. It’s truly fun when you master its chaos.
Looks like a fun sequel to Kirby's Air Ride from the GameCube. Definitely would be buying it someday if it got sold for under $50 like the GameCube title. Yeah no way I'm paying $70 for a spinoff, that price tag to me is for mainline games only.
I never played the original so no nostalgia there.
I struggled to enjoy this in the test ride initially, thinking it was just far too hectic and unfocussed. I played a bit more to see if I could find something a bit deeper, but it still eludes me. That said, I did slightly warm up to the game itself, it had moments of fun. Maybe other modes in the full game would grab me more.
I think I am one of those that was put off by the test ride though. I might have bought this, but knowing what I know now, certainly not for full or close to full price.
Been trying to read review on my phone. Honestly NintendoLife, have you tried viewing any of your pages on a phone, I can’t scroll more than 2 lines of the review before an intrusive ad appears!
Makes me want to get an ad blocker purely for this site!
@Serpenterror Why does being a spin off make it lesser? That makes no sense. Do you never buy Mario Kart? Mario Sports games? Hyrule Warriors? Smash Bros? You’re acting as if spin offs inherently have less content but this game has so much to do in it. I implore you to expand your horizons
@Jhena You are welcome, my friend 🙏
Tried the demo and it's gonna be a pass for me. Yes the soundtrack seems amazing, it's looking good and it is pretty fun while racing. But.... the races are waaaaayyyy too short! When you start having fun, it is already over (1.5-2mn long, hopefully there's a way to make them last longer???). Also, the arena mode literally made me feel sick after about 3mn in. I couldn't even go through the 5mn and had to put the controller down. It is so fast paced, going left, right, circling non stop, I felt like I was going to give my dinner back! Speed isn't an issue for me when it is going straight (even Fast Fusion is perfectly fine) but when it is pure chaos, it is just impossible for me. Probably a great game but I'll have to skip it. I'll go back playing Inazuma Eleven.
Meh, just not interested in racing games. Not too excited for this one.
Also what the loving heck is a 'marmite racer' ? 😆
Why is a "Learning Curve" a Con'?
Not really excited. At $50 I might have waited and picked up during a black friday or somesuch.
On the bright side I managed to preorder metroid 4 s2 for under 55eur
I'm super excited to play the full game on Thursday!
This does look very fun, but not for present day full price! 🤪
It's a no from me. This game just made me want to play Mario Kart World more.
@chiptoon the hell did the smash ultimate back button do to you? did the games & more icon kill your neighbor?
Well I personally think it's a 9, I'm happy it has a positive review unlike the first game. This game is amazing and it's a miracle that it exists! I Love Kirby Air Riders!
Don’t like the original, the Demo struck me as an improvement but nothing I want to spend £50 on. Also started to get a bit of motion sickness. So it’s a pass from me. Hope those who get it enjoy it.
PJ, can you move the spin move to a button?
Me after seeing the test demo: "Looks like the big thing I need to worry about is a lack of modes and content."
This is more or less something I'll be adding to my list.
Also, did not previously know Smash Run's idea came from OG Air Ride.
I never played Kirby Air Ride since I never had GameCube access, but this sequel definitely has me intrigued. I hope there are more demos down the line for those of us who are on the fence but don't own a Switch 2 yet. I like racing games, but I'm very selective about which ones I grab since they typically don't hold my attention long.
That said, I know this is a long-awaited sequel and hope everyone jumping in at or near launch has an amazing time. I've read some great feedback so far.
@turnmebackwards yep. The higher prices will put people off games they would have bought on a whim normally, but, that does mean you are more likely to buy games you really want, avoiding such a big backlog and a bigger appreciation of those that you do get. Silver linings
Only other review I saw so far was Gamespot, they also gave it a glowing review and an 8/10 score. Seemed more like a 9 based on the words but hey I guess 8 does mean “great”. Looking forward to tomorrow regardless !
10/Rick
The demon was stellar. And a learning curve is a positive to me. It's nice to stress my brain cells occasionally.
The demo was great, so I think the game will be great.
@canaryfarmer @MatthewTaranto
Theres this advert for a product called Marmite (its this spread you can put on bread) and the slogan is "You either love it or you hate it."
It basically just means your milage will vary wildly on if its your thing or not.
I will get this game eventually. I think having a racing game like this and MK World would be great to switch between the two.
Felix sounds extra chilled out in this video, glad you're at peace, good sir
I love me some Marmite and indeed, Vegemite, but this isn't really for me, despite looking like it could be fun. I'd play it for like and hour or two and be like 'that was cool' and never touch it again.
Random, I actually prefer Vegemite as it spreads easier on bread and butter/olive spread (whatever) than Marmite.
I cannot wait to play later today! One final hope I have is that the story mode has a proper Kirby finale.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
If this was F-Zero GX2 it would score 10/10
If this was Wave Race 4 it would score 10/10
If this was Excite Truck 2 it would score 10/10
If this was Stunt Race FX2 it would score 10/10
If this was Pilotwings SW2 it would score 10/10
Still getting it but would prefer Ninty to show some love to some of these other IPs
Amazing game of my all time favorite nintendo character!
Check out other titles being relised soon at my blog!

Thanks community!!
I hope I can get into this game. Sakurai is a brilliant developer and I can see so much potential with this game. I didn’t really get much of a chance to participate in the global demo, only managed one or two city trial runs in the first weekend, and wasn’t thrilled with the chaotic nature of it. Hoping I just have to get used to it and get more time with it.
Been waiting for this game for years. So excited for tomorrow!
At $99.99(CAD) this was already a tough sell. But it really did look sharp and like a lot of content.
It's really the online demo that convinced me not to get it. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but the controls/gameplay never clicked and felt like they worked, even when I was eventually winning it was never really....fun.
Hope everyone that's excited for this one enjoys it.
Can’t wait! Loved the original and the demo was fantastic.
Looks like it's going to be a hell of a fun game. Only reason I am not getting it is because I am poor 😭 definitively see it in my future.
I played the demo and um...it's hard to imagine this being an 8. For me, anyway. I think it's neat that it exists, especially in the console's first year, but man...I wasn't into it at all.
@Gohanjin You have full control over how many laps you do on a given track in the full game (not sure what the upper limit is, though). The cap is 2 laps for most tracks, but many of them are roughly twice as long as most Mario Kart tracks. There's also a slower speed setting you can use
@ear_wig
Every fighting game practically has a learning curve, and so should racers. Ya, I don't get it either. I see that as a pro. Which translates NL's score to a saucy 8.5.
Unfortunately, I went from being excited for this one, to passing on it due to the beta. It just did not click for me at all. I never played the GCN original, so I just assumed I would love it, because I love all of Sakurai's previous games that I played. But Air Riders is very much not for me.
@Old-Red @BenAV @turnmebackwards Sadly I have to agree, the jump in first party game prices was too big and sudden. In Europe they went from 60€ to 80€, MKW even 90€.
As a result: Same as what you all said, instead of preordering not only games from my personal A-list but also a lot of B-listers like I used to I've become hesitant / patient.
@ShadLink not everyone who reads reviews is a 733t g4m3rz like you. Casual fans and the younger crowd might see Kirby and think "easy kid game," and being warned that this might not be for them is a service that some critics are inclined to provide.
I'm kinda torn as I had hoped for more substance in terms of the Road Trip Mode with what apparently are really only super bitsized misisons of in part less than a minute.
I did absolutely enjoy the Air Ride mode in the Demo though, would very much like to play more of that, while at the same time I absolutely have no desire to play the City Trial mode ever again.
Not sure how long playing only playing the Air Ride mode will entertain me. Might have to wait for a sale.
@Yoshi3 While I'm not against Kirby Air Riders and how it relates to other Nintendo racing franchises (or franchises that have kart racers), I would personally say that Fast Fusion is much more similar to an F-Zero game than Kirby Air Riders is. I strongly recommend checking it out!
I'm glad you seem to enjoy Kirby Air Riders. Personally, I'm not a fan, but it makes me happy to see people appreciating it!
"There's a learning curve"
Don't threathen me with a good time :3
The overuse of "moreish" in nintendolife articles should be studied.
@turnmebackwards it’s not really a Nintendo issue anymore. Everything is skyrocketing in price. LEGO sets & records to name a few. Not to mention ton grocery prices in the states.
I know I'll like this game more than MKW, which was functionally a disaster (the most tragic kind of disaster).
@BenAV
Huh. I’ve seen you around here for many years now, and I feel like you would’ve enjoyed it.
@Hawkes142 I've played fast Fusion actually... but there's something that just doesn't click for me in relation with F-Zero GX ... I don't know if its the camera perspective, the size of the racers, the movement of it not being as smooth, or the tracks, or the soundtrack.
Don't get me wrong, they are good games... its just that they seem more like just a futuristic racer with an F-Zero skin... but it resembles something more aking to G-Force or Wipeout.
I don't feel the F-Zero GX crazyness in the tracks or the aggresiveness against other racers.
@ShadLink Those were not good tutorials. Better would have been explaining in text then having you do what it says probably a number of concepts at once. All that was explained in about half an hour could have been explained in about 5 minutes then learn by doing.
Please tell me the single player mode is more in depth than MK world
Feel like this could and should be on Switch 1.
No-one is buying a Switch 2 for this after all.
Honestly I don't know how much I'll be playing this online (in fact, I think my online playing games are largely over aside from a few games like Splatoon, I'm just more of a solo player), but the way this game handles the checklist thing will definitely help in keeping my interest for a good while. I'm looking forward to receiving it tomorrow!
The switch 2 is short on unique content right now. Do we REALLY need 2 kart racers?
@h3s I liked the tutorials, but we need way more such as what are all these icons and powerups (no idea), what is really happening in City Trial, what are we doing there, how to win, what to do. None of that was explained well. Hopefully full game will have that. Can't wait to buy it.
One of the first Switch 2 games I will be getting - I had cancelled my preorder, as I've been busy with other things and just play my switch and ps5 until things calm down. But I will be getting this one at some point. I'm glad to hear they nailed the landing.
@rallydefault I've never played a Pokemon game, I know, that's wild, but what makes this game so time sucking?
@Clammy It will be three kart racers on dec 4th
This is a 10/10 game right here, it does what it's set out to do perfectly and I see no other ways to improve it. Sakurai is simply unmatched in terms of making games.
@SoIDecidedTo
I definitely wouldn’t use the word “sucking” lol. It’s just a cool little world that I can see Pokemon fans spending lots of time in.
Lots of Pokemon to catch. Post-game tournament to climb. Outfits and cosmetics to collect. Online leaderboards. The parkour challenges. All the usual fun stuff.
I did 40ish hours for the main game and really liked it, but I’m not a huge Pokemon fan so I’m not gonna do another 40, but I can easily see people getting tons of hours from the game.
It's crazy that this game released with such a huge price tag. It's not different enough from the first game to justify that price. It's just more of the same but with hd and skylanders swap force.
Still heavily interested just because I want to experience Sakurai's game programming philosophy once more. Also sounds like the perfect pick-up-and-play design, even more so than Mario Kart World.
Also very interested in the amiibo, but $50 each is a hard sell. . . Might just have to buy the Kirby amiibo for the novelty even if I don't buy any others.
I really hope that I just need to give this some more time because man, I REALLY want my $69.99 back. 3+ hours in and I genuinely loathe this game.
What really need is a new Snowboard Kids
Pretty much any game I get into will be a time suck. I think I play 20 minutes and it is 2 hours. haha I may give this a go eventually. It seems to be one of the ones that people are most excited about that I've seen.
@Charlirnie I was just watching ThaBeast play through one and 2 last week. I concur. Time for Atlus to bring out round 3!
Too expensive for only 18 courses.
Super Mario Kart (SNES) = 20 tracks.
2025 Kirby Air Riders 2 = 9 (new) + 9 (reused) tracks, for $70 !?!?
BIG NO
@Uncle_Franklin I did
@Final_Fantasy_Kirby
Good Lord.
@Uncle_Franklin sorry, I'm just a huge Kirby fan.
@Final_Fantasy_Kirby
Any game with Rick the Hamster is good to be fair.
Incredibly late to the party but I got this last weekend and it’s easily my GOTY. I love everything about it. MKW won’t be getting any playtime for the foreseeable.
