Switch 2 with it's library, this attitude towards AI and an attractive price is sure to be the next BANGER for Nintendo, at least in my book.
Also, about AI, I have been heavily involved with generative AI in my dayjob, and there is something about it, the uncanny valley thing, that we as humans are able to detect. How stuff is worded, how patterns in an innocent background image repeat, how faces look and how limbs intertwingle when everything f's up (okay, the last one was too obvious), but I have a feeling it's not flying like they want it to.
I had several clients that could spot AI images and they are not happy when they do, even though they can't put their finger on what's "off".
I hope this AI boom brings forth a new found appreciation for human creativity and craftsmanship.
As I grow older, rapidly decaying towards my grave, it feels like Battlefield and COD games pass me by just as quickly as the seasons do. I really enjoyed 1942, Vietnam and some of the more modern games (like Bad Company), but have completely lost interest in recent years due to personal time commitments somewhere else and a very stale feeling of "more of the same just with added political bias".
Ahahaha been playing this with a friend a while back on PC, folks I can only urge you to give it a try, build your machine of doom and duke it out. It's stupid fun!
@Iconoclysm So you don't enjoy them? Or you do. Which is what I said. I don't care where you are coming from, main thing is you enjoy yourself. Even though we might have played the same games back then, it's perfectly fine to arrive at a different conclusion with the new stuff.
@NeonMullet exactly. I love playing stuff in bursts and replay them not to collect stupid items or unlock some achievement, I enjo coming back for the pure fun. Lately I’ve dabbled into retro shmups and absolutely fell in love with Gynoug and Gleylancer.
Oh yes I thought links awakening was just perfect, the remake that is. It’s m absolute favorite Zelda game. I didn’t even get the latest one sequel to BotW knowing i wouldn’t ever finish it anyways!
@Iconoclysm I absolutely can’t see this. But that is fine and if you enjoy them, good for you! I had plenty of fun with eh OG ones already! Now it’s your turn!
@GarlicGuzzler not upset about anything, but I have preferences and this is not of my liking. I don’t like „universal resets“ or lazy alternate reality storylines. Also even if cyborgs in the story are non existent, has nothing to do with the gender swap. Next iteration of MK scorpion is a furry teddy bear identifying as a flying saucer?
I also don’t like drip feeding DLC and fatalities that have long left the realm of any good taste.
Again. My personal preference. Also I still can and do play the old games, vote with my wallet and just go for a hike!
@WhiteTrashGuy Remember when everyone complained "enough with the pixel art indie games"? I take pixel art over the flash garbage any day of the week.
Truth be told, since modern gaming is such a non-rewarding timesink in many cases, I find myself playing my backlog from over 30 years ago and enjoy the heck out of it.
@GarlicGuzzler I don't like gender-swaps for the sake of it. There's plenty of strong female characters in MK lore in varying degrees of "sexiness". And taking offense about the depiction of females in a game where you murder people in the most gruesome ways possible seems a bit silly to me.
Neither of them was really outstanding, no matter if presented together or seperately. But it's ok, it can't always be all bangers and yeah we're already halfway into Switch 2. Probably in september we will hear something about Switch 2 and they got all the "old stuff" out the way with this double whammy.
Whatever anyways, got a backlog reaching back to 1989 so I'm fine.
@Lightsiyd I’m tempted to say all of them. Far cry, ghost recon, assassins creed, the crew, watch dogs… all the same game with different lick of paint! Luckily I stopped caring a while ago!
@nocdaes I think the days of physical-in-person celebrations of the gaming industry is over. Triple AAA gaming as a whole has many problems.
I'd rather see large-scale real life retro and indie events and I'd love to see more "off-the-beaten-path" projects of larger developers but with smaller budgets and more time.
Also another thing: Constraint often breeds creativity. Nowadays gaming has become just another industry geared towards large profit margins. Back in the day you had ambitions nerdy devs that worked very limited hardware and that limitations often bred great gameplay ideas and even new genres.
With todays consoles, there are basically no limits to what you can do, so you don't need to be as creative. Go Ubisoft and vomit collectibles over an open world map and call it a game.
Yes I am old and yes I can't wait for the release of EARTHION. lol
Hope everyone's getting their moneys worth while I am replaying the first three games on retro consoles! <3 (After having spent my entire early teens playing them originally)
I'm too old for this modern garbage. It's the usual Mortal Kombat progression all over again. They had a controversial hit with the very first one, then improved immensely on it with MK2, then MK3 and Ultimate MK3 introduced faster gameplay and more silly finishers like Animalities. Trilogy was a (fun) mess. MK4 was a mess and from then on they just piled on the features no one really wanted, switching stances and styles, continous fatalities, etc... then that Reboot happened, on PS3/Xbox 360, it was just called Mortal Kombat, it was a great game basically retelling the story of MK1 and MK2, it was really really good imho. Then the modern Mortal Kombats followed and they were again laden with over-the-top fatalities and additional features. Now with MK1 it's features, DLCs and a conglomerate of "stuff" again.
I'd love if they'd remaster the classic games in HD and release them with proper online modes to be honest. But okay, I am old. It is what it is.
"even if the 17 tracks on offer (and their different course variants) do get overly familiar by the end" Isn't that the point of a racer to improve your times consistently?
@buxner thanks for your input. At the end of the das different people have different perceptions. None of us both can be 100% objective. If we get a beefier switch - I and others will be happy but you won’t buy it (outright) and the other way round.
The basics of how video games are played haven’t changed in 40 years and that’s for a reason. No matter if you have a second screen a stylus or even on other consoles like the PS - remember the dual shock 4? How many games utilized that touch pad on the controller? Heck there’s even so many games on switch that don’t use gyro or it’s touch screen even if it would be a perfect fit.
You know why PS and XBOX never really changed a thing and failed when they tried (Kinect, VR)? People don’t care. Except a small minority who wants cutting edge graphics, tech and also experience most people are fine with a precise controller doing what they did the past couple of years and regardless how any of us feels Personally about it all, Nintendo sure as hell has all the data they need to come up with a product making their investors happy first and foremost.
I don’t think Nintendo will ever screw up as hard as they did with Wii U - wether or not that fits to one’s personal perception is another thing entirely.
I think at this point going too hard into gimick territory will hurt sales and perception. Think Wii U. That gamepad, no one really cared. Also, if the system is too different to the competition, it's again doom for 3rd party support.
Also, everyone praises Nintendo for being weird and creative when it comes to their systems. That is simply not the case. Nintendo is trying stuff out to find something that works and if it works, they iterate on it. That's why I have high hopes for a "not too fancy" Switch 2.
OG Gameboy was mostly mindful of cost, so it could grow into an item that many people could afford so they could establish a huge fan- and userbase. Then they iterated. Made it lighter, slightly better screen, Gameboy Pocket was born. And since it worked so well they tried to fix the next obvious shortcoming, the light situation with the GBP light. Then what's next? Color! Color screen. And then again the GBA was just that. An advanced Gameboy Color and it was a BEAST of a system and again needed a few iterations to get a decent, backlit screen.
Look at the home consoles. Super Nintendo? Straight gaming beast, no bells and whistles, just performance and great 3rd party support. Nintendo 64? The only thing they tried was the weird controller and they only did that because at that point no one had really figured out 3D gaming yet.
Then, since the N64 underperformed, most likely due to being stuck to carts and having weird control schemes, they tried something new and gimicky, because they had to, in a market where the competition had left them in the dust long ago while the Gamecube desperately tried to compete on an even level.
Enter the Wii. Same approach as the gameboy, make it affordable and user friendly, and yes, the sensor bar and the wii mote (to me) is the obvious answer to all your console gaming first person shooter needs (oh yeah ofc the nunchuk too). Then with they Wii U they tried something new just for NEWNESS sake. And it failed. Bad marketing, bad distinction.
if they had just called it "Wii 2" and made it three times as powerful, gave it FULL HD and called it a day, it would have worked, I am sure.
And the Switch? They didn't make it a hybrid console for sake of being different. It was a business decision to save money and personell fusing the handheld and console division together and the Switch was the practical result of that decision. That's all there is to it.
So what will the Switch 2 be? Iterative and not revolutionary because they have no need to. Nintendo sticks to what works and doesn't take unnecessary risks, same as all companies.
Everything that came before was fiddling with the formula, now that they've found one that works perfectly, they will only slightly enhance it. I am sure.
I love Metal Slug. The Art style and the humor. I pulled the trigger on this one, but wish I hadn't. It's really very very "surface level" and grindy. Oh and yes, the difficulty spikes are NO joke at all.
Back in the day, I loved it. Even though I sucked at it. Might give this one a second chance. "Bounty Hunters" - always interested in everything around the matter.
Odd read. Wouldn't that all be a non-issue if we had better motion controls? Like push a button bring up menue, flick to scroll, point to select, release button, done?
Anyways you could even argue that a scrollwheel is archaic and you could go into voice commands, touch screens and pads or even eyetracking. Yes that sounds all futuristic but heck have you checked tech sites lately?
That said, I'm perfectly fine with arcade games of the 90's for example. Not everything needs 500 menues and 1000 items.

State of the industry? Pretty effed up imho, with Nintendo and everything around Nintendo slightly less so.

I really hate this "flash game" aesthetic. Reminds me of Newgrounds. The only game imho that really got away with it (somewhat) is Castle Crashers.
Gotta find the OG pixel thing somewhere.
This should at least have a switch to play it in old style pixelmess graphics.
