Re: Nintendo Places Outside Top 20 In Metacritic's 15th Annual Game Publisher Rankings

MontyCircus

@Mana_Knight

I'm not even defending Nintendo, I don't think the "average of all your games" is very useful.

In 1995, Square released Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, and Trials of Mana / Seiken Densetsu 3.

Does anyone care if they made a dozen or two dozen flops that year? No! It's irrelevant. It's a fantastic Square year!

Or to put it another way, you might hear someone say "the '80s were a great time for action movies!"

Would someone then start listing all the bad '80s action movies? Who cares? They were ignored then and forgotten now.

When evaluating gaming companies, we remember the "hits".

MontyCircus

In 2017 Nintendo released Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey.

Would anyone care to be pointed out if they also released a dozen other forgettable games that year? That doesn't make those 2 game any less awesome.

We remember developers and publishers for their "hits", and ignore their misses. I would rather MetaCritic say...tally up their "85+" score games released, maybe bonus points for "90+" and "95+". That would better reflect what they have contributed to our industry.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Removal Of Switch Online SNES Game

MontyCircus

NL users (that's you and me!) rank Super Soccer the #58 best SNES game on the NSO (out of 70).

I found a Ranker.com list where nearly 700 people ranked the SNES soccer games.
Out of 36 games, Super Soccer ranked #3, behind only International Superstar Soccer and its Deluxe sequel.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Announces Removal Of Super Famicom Title

MontyCircus

@zockermiller

I check DekuDeals, and at least here in Canada, nearly all games are only available digitally. Here are the last bunch I've been interested in:

  • Sorry, We're Closed
  • Star of Providence
  • Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog
  • Momodora: Moonlit Farewell
  • Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector
  • Laika: Aged Through Blood
  • Robobeat
  • Turbo Overkill

That's a whole month of games. None available at retail in Canada. Maybe somewhere, in some far-flung country they're available, but they're all the same to me as all-digital.

Re: Nintendo Download: 20th February (North America)

MontyCircus

Getting:

  • Cosmic Fantasy Collection2 (2 former Japan-exclusive PC-Engine CD games)
  • Ninja Five-O (A good old Game Boy Advance game)
  • Star of Providence (Rated "Overwhelmingly Positive* by nearly 1,900 users on Steam)
  • Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog (3 strong Switch reviews so far)

Re: Review: Sid Meier's Civilization VII (Switch) - An Incredible Game That's Not Quite Ready

MontyCircus

Critics reviews rank it the worst mainline Civ yet.

I found an article, ranking them all by MetaCritic score, and it ended up 10th-best in the entire series including spinoffs.

I've also read the top Steam users reviews, and oof, their complaints make a lot of sense to me.

Most games with numbered sequels tend to iterate and grow on their previous instalments. Change things just enough so that it rides that line between familiarity and shininess.

Firaxis apparently missed this particular industry-wide memo, and thus the Civilization series will happily buck its own trends and well-established ideas in order to deliver something fresh every single time

I believe the usual rationale for making a new Civilization games was:

  • ⅓ the same
  • ⅓ improved
  • ⅓ new

Historically accurate where it needs to be, historically inaccurate when it's more fun that way

One of Sid Meier's lessons he learned from a failed game was:
"when forced to be given a choice between giving the gamer 'realism' or 'fun', give them 'fun'."

@Lizuka The value of money is subjective.
You wouldn’t pay $40,000 for an early Switch 2, but would you pay $.40?

There are many people on this earth so insanely wealthy that $40,000 is virtually the same as $.40 might be to the average person.

China has 814 billionaires. The most in the world.

Someone with $1 billion, invested in stocks at 8% return makes a quarter million $ a day.

They'll be able to afford another $40,000 Switch 2 every 4½ hours.

Re: No Wins For Nintendo At DICE Awards, But Balatro Bags A Three Of A Kind

More about Don James from the D.I.C.E. Awards website:

Don was also the key steward of Nintendo of America’s relationship with Starlight Children’s Foundation. He co-designed the Nintendo GameCube Starlight Fun Center in 2002 and led Nintendo of America’s support of Starlight to bring games and movies to seriously ill children in hospitals.

I think they said he designed the Donkey Kong cabinet. And I read that:

"Donkey Kong's damsel in distress was named Pauline, after Don's wife, Polly James."

Re: Nintendo Download: 13th February (North America)

MontyCircus

The poll is buggy. I scrolled down to put my games in the poll and...it was already the results?
Plus lots of blanks added on the at the end all at "0%".

Anyway, here's what I'm looking at this week:

  • Arcade Archives MARCHEN MAZE (Japan arcade exclusive! Came to consoles, I think PC-Engine, but was an overhead view, it couldn't do the isometric view of the original arcade game).
  • Snezhinka ("Overwhelmingly Positive" from Steam users)
  • Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip (another "Overwhelmingly Positive" on Steam game)

Already have:

  • all the games in DOOM Anthology

Re: Nintendo Download: 6th February (North America)

MontyCircus

Getting because they're good:

  • Momodora: Moonlit Farewell
  • Turbo Overkill
  • Under Defeat

Getting because they're crazy Japanese exclusives:

  • Cho Aniki Collection - probably the craziest of them all!
  • Sugoro Quest: Dice Heroes - a board game RPG??

Waiting to see how it is on Switch:

  • Sid Meier's Civilization VII

Not getting because I already own it:

  • Arcade Archives THUNDER FOX is in the Taito Milestones 3 collection
  • Citizen Sleeper: Helion Collection already have them individually

Re: EA: Switch 2 Could Help Games Like FC And Madden "Find Real Energy"

MontyCircus

It gives us the ability to...acquire new players.

That's pretty horrible corporate-speak.

Something like: "It gives us the ability to provide the EA gaming experience to a new ecosystem of existing Nintendo players", would have been far less gross.

i.e. say what service you're providing, not what new customers you're "owning".

Re: Nintendo Download: 30th January (North America)

MontyCircus

Getting because they're good:

  • Citizen Sleeper 2
  • Laika: Aged Through Blood
  • Robobeat

Getting because it was a Japanese exclusive:

  • Wizardry: The Five Ordeals and if you want the whole package, then Triple Pack it is! Pricey!

Getting because Hardball was in The Princess Bride:

  • Accolade Sports Collection

Re: Nintendo Download: 23rd January (North America)

MontyCircus

Good games, just waiting to make sure it's good on Switch:

  • Guilty Gear -Strive-: Nintendo Switch Edition
  • Ravenswatch

Sequel to a good game, waiting for reviews:

  • Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter

Some good reviews so far, waiting to see more:

  • Symphonia
  • Worlds of Aria

And I'd get the EGGCONSOLE Zanac MSX, but it's a very rudimentary version of an NES classic.

Re: Random: Astro Bot "Almost Outdid Nintendo At Its Own Game", Jokes Reggie

MontyCircus

When Astro Bot came out to rave reviews that one after another proclaimed: "It out-Marios Mario!", I concluded that this was good, because it will force Nintendo to "raise the bar" for the next 3D Mario game.

But, it seems everyone expects a new 3D Mario game to be out for Switch 2 launch day. Assuming that they took a year to "polish" the game, I think it's entirely possible that the new 3D Mario was essentially "in the can" before Astro Bot was released.

Which would mean that Nintendo couldn't learn from or know how to "out-Astro Bot Astro Bot" in the making of the new 3D Mario.

And if it doesn't end up clearing the Astro Bot bar? That would be sad.

Re: Rumour: Switch Virtual Console Was Apparently Nintendo's "Original Plan"

MontyCircus

Virtual console would be great!

I think I'll just start with the core NES and SNES Mario and Zelda titles:

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

And at $10 per game it would only cost me $90!

Or I could get the NSO for over 4 years (which I need for online play anyway), and play 200 games.

On Virtual Console that would cost me $2,000.

You'd have to subscribe to NSO for 100 years to pay that much.
