@mattitudemf Nice! I’m with you. I spend more time on gaming news than gaming because it’s easy to listen to podcasts or read articles during work downtime. Sometimes I’ll do a soft mod or hack an older system just for fun and mess with it a bit, but they usually get put away soon after, haha. I was super excited to relive my TurboGrafx days with the mini a few years ago, but I think I only used it for a handful of hours. It sat around for a time and then made me a decent profit.
@mattitudemf That would be cool. I should finally grab a Mister. Although I find the idea of playing retro games a lot more interesting than actually doing it. In a way it’s better if they don’t release more collections because I have a bunch.
Just drop some collections on cartridges. An NES collection, a virtual boy collection, etc. Offer a bundle with a controller as an option. Or break it up by series. Just give us some classics on cartridge.
Glad to see that Switch 2 cartridge as I held out on the Switch 1 version. I’ll be waiting to get it on sale as games in this series pretty much always go down into the $45 range or lower. Indy is coming in early May and I already plan to get that one at full price to support physical on Switch 2 (as long as it has gyro controls). Makes me think I should offload my copies of 2 and 3 that have been in the backlog.
@HingryHuppo Yes, it was absolutely a movie children could enjoy and watch over and over. Mine thought it was fine, but never really mentioned it again. They are older than your son though.
The movie accomplished a lot from Nintendo’s perspective, and you may be right about Miyamoto, but it feels like an Illumination movie to me.
@rjejr It really seems like you didn’t read my comment. You’re mostly agreeing with me. I said they either did something right or the IP was enough to bring people. I said Mario was mediocre, not terrible. Seems equivalent to your “fine”.
What was Lasseter’s involvement with Lightyear? A “Thanks” credit?
Sure, nobody has a perfect track record, but you’d be hard pressed to find a better run than the one Pixar had under Lasseter. I think he and Miyamoto working together would have had a better shot at making something great rather than a movie that basically survives off of references. His “scandal” seemed overblown from what I read (and heard from a friend who worked directly with him). But it’s my hypothetical and if I want to imagine Lasseter as a candidate I’m not going to let his tendency to give hugs stop me, haha.
Dreamworks has a range of films, some better than others, but I think their best is better than Illumination’s. Illumination’s best work is Despicable Me, which is much more of a comedy than any Mario movie should be. I haven’t liked anything else they made.
There are a lot of great animation studios out there, but I think Nintendo felt they needed a big partner so I didn’t dive too deep in this hypothetical. Plus they already had a partner in Universal which owns both Illumination and Dreamworks.
At the end of the day the movie made a billion dollars or whatever, so either they did something right or the IP was enough to bring people out to the theater. I don’t know if more references will be enough to carry a sequel across the billion dollar line so I hope they really nailed a good story this time.
I eagerly awaited the new Shinobi last year, played it until I encountered a game breaking bug, waited for a patch and then played it until I encountered ANOTHER game breaking bug. Then I gave up. Lesson learned.
I really wish Nintendo hadn’t partnered with Illumination for this. The result was predictable, mediocre children’s fare. Maybe they could have partnered with John Lasseter or at least Dreamworks, as they’ve shown they can make family friendly movies that have wider appeal. I’m hoping against hope that Galaxy will be a big step up.
If you want to watch it without ads try your local library. Mine has blu-rays. Quality is better than most streaming and there are no ads.
I’d be perfectly happy with another BOTW. It is the best game ever made. The story is a great framework for the story that happens for each player or play through. Interactive stories are different than linear stories, and game designers shouldn’t try to copy movies. BOTW really delivered an interactive story. I’m playing through it again right now. TOTK is great, but the building mechanic added nothing for me.
I’d love for them to bring back motion controls. For the life of me I can’t understand why people online hate them so much. I found them really immersive in both Twilight Princess and especially Skyward Sword.
After Metroid I was ready for my third playthrough of BOTW. Picked up the Switch 2 cartridge and am enjoying it all over again. Looking forward to Indy now that we know it’s on cartridge, and waiting for some keycard games to get cheap enough to be worth a play and flip. In the meantime I have a huge backlog of Switch games to play, the improved performance on Switch 2 has been totally worth the upgrade.
This is good news for me. Indy is the only one I was interested in but assumed it would be a key card. I tried to play it on Amazon Luma but it didn’t support gyro as far as I could tell. Now I will be buying it on Switch 2 (assuming it has gyro support)
Splatoon Raiders is the only thing that interests me at the moment. I’ll give Fire Emblem a look when it comes out. Everything else that looks good is a key card and those will have to wait for super cheap prices or 2nd hand purchases for cheap. I’ll beat them and flip them because there’s no reason to keep them.
I’d be down for the peripheral, but not the subscription. Package the product with the games and I’d be interested. But spend $100 on something that won’t be usable at all when I’m not subscribed or they shut it down? No way. There’s probably a way to emulate these with my AR glasses.
Too bad Nintendo partnered with Illumination. Their movies skew way too young rather than for all ages. The first Mario movie was a big disappointment. It’s like they thought they could do the same old thing and just toss in a bunch of fan service. I hope they finally made a good movie, but their track record doesn’t give me hope.
Mario Wonder was just ok for me. None of this content looks even up to that level. I don’t want to encourage this kind of release from Nintendo either, so no I won’t be buying this in any form.
My experience was very similar to the author's except that I largely avoided the conversation online, and I'm glad that I did. I knew that people were saying it was bad and unlike a Metroid game, but that wasn't the experience I was having so I just left all of those topics unclicked.
No spoilers here, but by the time the credits rolled I was really disappointed in what had happened in the story. I had fun playing the game despite its problems. I didn't mind the addition of NPCs for this entry. It would have helped if they were better characters, and to be clear I wouldn't want them in every Metroid game going forward.
After completing the game this last Friday I went online and looked at the discourse around it. I largely agree with all the negative sentiments, but I'm glad that it didn't color my play through. For me this wasn't an "Other M" moment, but definitely not a high mark either. It was an enjoyable game, but I doubt I will revisit it when the original trilogy is available to me.
I think the discounts are about previous generation hardware. There are plenty of people who don’t care to have the latest and greatest game system. A cheap Switch with some amazing games at a discount price would make an amazing Christmas present for a child. But instead prices went up.
Seems like a good chance to invest. When big first party games come along and the next generation competitors come out at even higher prices, the Switch 2 is going to look much better to a lot of people.
For those that don’t want to see GKC comments just start ignoring commenters who post about it. Problem solved.
I will buy this when Switch 2 gets a physical or the digital/GKC version gets a steep, steep discount. I have a huge backlog so I’m not hurting for anything to play.
Strider is my favorite, but I’d go with the standard cover. I always thought it was a little strange to have a cover for one game when it’s a collection.
Thanks, I let them know that I won’t be buying key cards or downloads so key card = no sale. I’ll patiently wait for them to rerelease their games on physical.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined on a real cartridge would be enough of an announcement for me. I’d ask for FFVII Remake as well, but the public statements don’t bode well for that so I’m just skipping it.
There are a lot of good launch lineups here, but Switch 2 wasn’t one of them. Not a single must-have game for me. I bought it for improvement to my Switch 1 games, and on that front it has not disappointed. But so far Bananza has been the only interesting exclusive.
Just started Prime 4 and so far it feels like a Metroid Prime game to me. But it really doesn’t matter to me what’s going on with “shooting games”, because they don’t interest me. This new game could probably do with less scanning, or a quicker way to do it instead of having to switch modes, but at this point I’m fine with it.
@jowy_sw I did not request a feature to hide games on the eshop (I rarely even open it). Thanks anyway. Also I will keep advocating for whatever opinion I have. You are welcome to advocate for yours.
Good job, Nintendo. Now let us actually hide titles that we don't want our kids to see on the home screen. When my kids were little they found the Diablo IV cover disturbing and I had no way of hiding it other than to delete it.
People say parents are responsible for controlling what their kids see and then want to take away the tools to do it. So weird.
I remember being in awe of SMB the first time I saw it. It seemed so much more advanced than the Atari games we had. I asked for an NES for my birthday and told my parents I would never need another game for it, haha.
Just finished Prince of Persia Lost Crown. It’s listed as being fully compatible but it would start to chug at times. Pressing the home button and then opening the game right back up would fix it. Is there a way to report issues with backwards compatibility to Nintendo?
Prime 4 coming out so close to Christmas could lead to it having some delayed sales in some countries (not Japan, obviously). It’s a must have for me being my 2nd favorite Nintendo franchise, but it was a good option to add to the Christmas list so I held off. Sales of the physical version going under the tree will obviously show early, but there could be a lot of eshop credit or people picking a game after opening gifts.
It’s a shame about Octopath. I’ll wait for a Switch 2 physical release. I think some key cards will eventually get them. I still only own two switch 2 games because of this.
Had preorders at both Amazon and Best Buy for 20% off. Amazon canceled and Best Buy gave me a $10 gift card because I didn’t want to buy the Switch 1 version. Since my preorders were canceled I asked for it for Christmas so the wait will be a bit longer. If I don’t get it then I’ll be making my way to Costco on 12/26.
Given that I only own 2 Switch 2 games and only intend to buy physicals the 256GB should last awhile. Unlike the tiny 32GB on Switch. Hopefully prices for 1TB cards will eventually be around $50 (in 2 or 3 years). Then I’ll get one.
I’ve learned I really need to try 3D games first these days. RE4R makes me motion sick, unfortunately. Also so few games have really great controls with gyro precision aiming implemented well. Both are deal breakers for me. A game needs a demo or a generous return policy.
I lived in Japan twice during the 90s and from what I remember $1 was worth around 85 yen. Today it’s about 154 yen! Are you sure these exchange rates were last seen in the 90s? Might be more like the 70s.
Makes sense. Ocarina has been called the Citizen Kane of video games in the past.
Too many games are trying to replicate cinematic storytelling, but for me BOTW has a framework of a story in which the story of your playthrough unfolds. For me it is the essence of interactive entertainment, which is exactly what he’s driving at in his comments.
I’ve been a Nintendo only gamer for several generations now, but if they want me to buy 3rd party titles on Switch 2 they’re going to have to be physical, dirt cheap, or have a generous refund policy to encourage trying games out.
I’d be really interested to know if they have data that shows moving away from physical is so advantageous that it will offset lost revenue from collectors. I think most companies are incapable of looking more than 3-5 years in the future, potentially shooting themselves in the foot. They haven’t learned anything from what happened to the movie or music industries.
I don’t usually subscribe to NSO. Got it briefly for cloud saves to work out my switch 2 transfer but then done. I don’t really need it for any ongoing reason.
Aside from Metroid and Raiders nothing is really exciting for me. Sad that this year’s Zelda game is another warriors outing. Normally 3rd party stuff would be on my list, but I don’t do digital or key cards so I’m just backlogging it with Switch 1 games. Not a bad thing.
I recognize almost none of these. How about physicals of the Ghouls and Ghosts game from a few years ago, or Shin Sekai: Into the Depths (I think that was Capcom).
I thought we would see the whole Shantae series rereleased for Switch 2 by limited run, but maybe the expensive cartridges prevented that. Maybe when this new one comes out.
Saw this and Ridge Racer at a giant PlayStation stand at Akihabara Station prior to the release of the machine and was blown away. It convinced me to scrape together the money to buy a PlayStation at launch. This game and the original PS go hand in hand for me. Cool piece of gaming history.
I’m glad some people enjoy this series, but I selfishly wish it would flop. They do one Zelda thing a year, and when it’s a warriors game I’m always disappointed and waiting for next year.
20/21 Missed Rescue Rangers. I spent a lot of time looking at games in stores during the NES days, but also worked in a used game store during the height of the SNES era and of course NES was still huge at that time.
@hisownsidekick Hope everything is ok. Glad you’re here!

20/21 Missed Rescue Rangers. I spent a lot of time looking at games in stores during the NES days, but also worked in a used game store during the height of the SNES era and of course NES was still huge at that time.
