Re: Nintendo Seemingly Rules Out Virtual Console Revival, Says It Remains Focused On Offering Classics Via Switch Online

Joekun

@mattitudemf Nice! I’m with you. I spend more time on gaming news than gaming because it’s easy to listen to podcasts or read articles during work downtime. Sometimes I’ll do a soft mod or hack an older system just for fun and mess with it a bit, but they usually get put away soon after, haha. I was super excited to relive my TurboGrafx days with the mini a few years ago, but I think I only used it for a handful of hours. It sat around for a time and then made me a decent profit.

Re: Hands On: Xenoblade Chronicles X & Mira Are Even More Magnificent On Switch 2

Joekun

Glad to see that Switch 2 cartridge as I held out on the Switch 1 version. I’ll be waiting to get it on sale as games in this series pretty much always go down into the $45 range or lower. Indy is coming in early May and I already plan to get that one at full price to support physical on Switch 2 (as long as it has gyro controls). Makes me think I should offload my copies of 2 and 3 that have been in the backlog.

Re: PSA: Watch The First Super Mario Movie For Free, Before Galaxy Arrives (US)

Joekun

@HingryHuppo Yes, it was absolutely a movie children could enjoy and watch over and over. Mine thought it was fine, but never really mentioned it again. They are older than your son though.

The movie accomplished a lot from Nintendo’s perspective, and you may be right about Miyamoto, but it feels like an Illumination movie to me.

Re: PSA: Watch The First Super Mario Movie For Free, Before Galaxy Arrives (US)

Joekun

@coolioam

Sure, nobody has a perfect track record, but you’d be hard pressed to find a better run than the one Pixar had under Lasseter. I think he and Miyamoto working together would have had a better shot at making something great rather than a movie that basically survives off of references. His “scandal” seemed overblown from what I read (and heard from a friend who worked directly with him). But it’s my hypothetical and if I want to imagine Lasseter as a candidate I’m not going to let his tendency to give hugs stop me, haha.

Dreamworks has a range of films, some better than others, but I think their best is better than Illumination’s. Illumination’s best work is Despicable Me, which is much more of a comedy than any Mario movie should be. I haven’t liked anything else they made.

There are a lot of great animation studios out there, but I think Nintendo felt they needed a big partner so I didn’t dive too deep in this hypothetical. Plus they already had a partner in Universal which owns both Illumination and Dreamworks.

At the end of the day the movie made a billion dollars or whatever, so either they did something right or the IP was enough to bring people out to the theater. I don’t know if more references will be enough to carry a sequel across the billion dollar line so I hope they really nailed a good story this time.

Re: PSA: Watch The First Super Mario Movie For Free, Before Galaxy Arrives (US)

Joekun

I really wish Nintendo hadn’t partnered with Illumination for this. The result was predictable, mediocre children’s fare. Maybe they could have partnered with John Lasseter or at least Dreamworks, as they’ve shown they can make family friendly movies that have wider appeal. I’m hoping against hope that Galaxy will be a big step up.

If you want to watch it without ads try your local library. Mine has blu-rays. Quality is better than most streaming and there are no ads.

Re: Talking Point: Age Of Imprisonment Could Inspire Next Zelda Game, Say Devs, But What Does That Mean?

Joekun

I’d be perfectly happy with another BOTW. It is the best game ever made. The story is a great framework for the story that happens for each player or play through. Interactive stories are different than linear stories, and game designers shouldn’t try to copy movies. BOTW really delivered an interactive story. I’m playing through it again right now. TOTK is great, but the building mechanic added nothing for me.

I’d love for them to bring back motion controls. For the life of me I can’t understand why people online hate them so much. I found them really immersive in both Twilight Princess and especially Skyward Sword.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (7th February)

Joekun

After Metroid I was ready for my third playthrough of BOTW. Picked up the Switch 2 cartridge and am enjoying it all over again. Looking forward to Indy now that we know it’s on cartridge, and waiting for some keycard games to get cheap enough to be worth a play and flip. In the meantime I have a huge backlog of Switch games to play, the improved performance on Switch 2 has been totally worth the upgrade.

Re: Poll: What Nintendo Switch 2 Games Are You Most Excited For In 2026?

Joekun

Splatoon Raiders is the only thing that interests me at the moment. I’ll give Fire Emblem a look when it comes out. Everything else that looks good is a key card and those will have to wait for super cheap prices or 2nd hand purchases for cheap. I’ll beat them and flip them because there’s no reason to keep them.

Re: Nintendo Announces Launch Line-Up For Switch Online Virtual Boy

Joekun

I’d be down for the peripheral, but not the subscription. Package the product with the games and I’d be interested. But spend $100 on something that won’t be usable at all when I’m not subscribed or they shut it down? No way. There’s probably a way to emulate these with my AR glasses.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy Movie's New Trailer Shares A "First Look" At Yoshi

Joekun

Too bad Nintendo partnered with Illumination. Their movies skew way too young rather than for all ages. The first Mario movie was a big disappointment. It’s like they thought they could do the same old thing and just toss in a bunch of fan service. I hope they finally made a good movie, but their track record doesn’t give me hope.

Re: Talking Point: Metroid Prime 4 And The Burden Of Being 'Good Enough'

Joekun

My experience was very similar to the author's except that I largely avoided the conversation online, and I'm glad that I did. I knew that people were saying it was bad and unlike a Metroid game, but that wasn't the experience I was having so I just left all of those topics unclicked.

No spoilers here, but by the time the credits rolled I was really disappointed in what had happened in the story. I had fun playing the game despite its problems. I didn't mind the addition of NPCs for this entry. It would have helped if they were better characters, and to be clear I wouldn't want them in every Metroid game going forward.

After completing the game this last Friday I went online and looked at the discourse around it. I largely agree with all the negative sentiments, but I'm glad that it didn't color my play through. For me this wasn't an "Other M" moment, but definitely not a high mark either. It was an enjoyable game, but I doubt I will revisit it when the original trilogy is available to me.

Re: Nintendo's Investors Are Reportedly "Spooked" As Stock Slides

Joekun

I think the discounts are about previous generation hardware. There are plenty of people who don’t care to have the latest and greatest game system. A cheap Switch with some amazing games at a discount price would make an amazing Christmas present for a child. But instead prices went up.

Seems like a good chance to invest. When big first party games come along and the next generation competitors come out at even higher prices, the Switch 2 is going to look much better to a lot of people.

Re: Censored Dispatch Artwork Spotted On Nintendo's Digital Storefront

Joekun

Good job, Nintendo. Now let us actually hide titles that we don't want our kids to see on the home screen. When my kids were little they found the Diablo IV cover disturbing and I had no way of hiding it other than to delete it.

People say parents are responsible for controlling what their kids see and then want to take away the tools to do it. So weird.

Re: Japanese Charts: Sorry Samus, Octopath Is The Best-Selling New Release This Week

Joekun

Prime 4 coming out so close to Christmas could lead to it having some delayed sales in some countries (not Japan, obviously). It’s a must have for me being my 2nd favorite Nintendo franchise, but it was a good option to add to the Christmas list so I held off. Sales of the physical version going under the tree will obviously show early, but there could be a lot of eshop credit or people picking a game after opening gifts.

Re: Former GTA Boss Dan Houser Says Zelda: BOTW And TOTK "Feel Like Hitchcock"

Joekun

Makes sense. Ocarina has been called the Citizen Kane of video games in the past.

Too many games are trying to replicate cinematic storytelling, but for me BOTW has a framework of a story in which the story of your playthrough unfolds. For me it is the essence of interactive entertainment, which is exactly what he’s driving at in his comments.

Re: Switch 2 Has The Largest Third-Party Software Lineup Ever For New Nintendo Hardware

Joekun

I’ve been a Nintendo only gamer for several generations now, but if they want me to buy 3rd party titles on Switch 2 they’re going to have to be physical, dirt cheap, or have a generous refund policy to encourage trying games out.

I’d be really interested to know if they have data that shows moving away from physical is so advantageous that it will offset lost revenue from collectors. I think most companies are incapable of looking more than 3-5 years in the future, potentially shooting themselves in the foot. They haven’t learned anything from what happened to the movie or music industries.

Re: Can You Name These NES Games From The Mangled Box Art?

Joekun

20/21 Missed Rescue Rangers. I spent a lot of time looking at games in stores during the NES days, but also worked in a used game store during the height of the SNES era and of course NES was still huge at that time.

@hisownsidekick Hope everything is ok. Glad you’re here!
