Re: As Switch 2 Breaks Records Worldwide, Sony Reminds Us That PS5 Still Exists

Joekun

PSOne will always have a special place in my heart, it rekindled my love of gaming at a time I thought I might be done. But since then not much they’ve done has appealed to me. I thought the PS2 was weak graphically, only used PS3 for blu-ray and haven’t looked back. These days the only reason I can see to get PS5 is for western AAA games that don’t appeal to me. Now, if they had Nintendo games I would have one. Seems like pretty great hardware for the money. All I need are Nintendo heavy hitting titles, a few great Japanese 3rd party titles running well, and awesome indie games.

Re: Review: No Man's Sky - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - Hello Games' Classic Without Cuts Or Concessions

Joekun

"When was the first time you played No Man's Sky?" Last night, haha. I think I'll get into it, but I really wish western developers would take the time to understand how Nintendo makes gyro controls great. The right stick is for large camera movements and the gyro controls are for precision. Just look at Splatoon and copy that system. I'm also kind of surprised that all the menus really seem to revolve around an on screen pointer. It's not a good experience but at least they could make it work with the joycon mouse. UI is an art form that so many developers haven't figured out.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Nintendo Switch 2

Joekun

I was really looking forward to the Switch Pro for many years. I just wanted my library to run that much better. Just a consistent 1080p/60 on every game. Switch 2 brought that and rekindled my interest in a lot of games I already have. The launch lineup isn’t really for me, but I have plenty to play and am looking forward to DK, Metroid, and the next Direct! So glad we are finally here!

Re: PSA: 8BitDo Controllers Require A Firmware Update To Work On Switch 2

Joekun

The back paddles on the 8bitDo controllers don’t map to GL and GR. Not a major problem, but it would be really nice if it was an option. That way we could have per game and per using settings for the paddles without having to go back to the ultimate software every time. I submitted this idea to 8bitDo and they said they’d consider it. If you want to see this feature send them an email supporting the idea.

Re: Review: Arcade Archives 2: Ridge Racer (Switch 2) - Still A Thrill, More Than 30 Years Later

Joekun

It’s no Daytona USA, but I was blown away playing the PS1 version at a Sony event prior to launch in Japan. I thought I was done with gaming but the Ridge Racer port and Toshinden convinced me to get a PS1. These days I find racing games too repetitive and Ridge Racer is probably one of the worst offenders there. Don’t see myself picking this up, but it seems promising that Arcade Archives is moving into this era of arcade games. Now if only they could find a way to do Gunbullet! Wonder if it would be fun with mouse control. Probably not.

Re: Review: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller - A New Benchmark In Comfort And Design

Joekun

The 8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth has been my go to since my 2nd Switch Pro Controller developed drift. I was planning to hold out on the new controller, but with Costco selling them for $75 right now (and no guarantee they will keep stocking them for the long term) I grabbed one. Haven’t opened it yet. With all the positivity around it though I probably will. Having GL and GR supported on a per game per account basis will be nice.

Re: Video: Do You Even Need A Pro Controller For The Switch 2?

Joekun

I loved my Switch Pro Controller but it finally developed drift. Then I got another and it developed drift. Now I have an 8bitdo Ultimate. I love everything about it other than the lack of HD rumble. I’m tempted to get a Switch 2 Pro Controller, but Nintendo hasn’t earned my trust enough for me to take a chance at the price they’re asking. I’d need to add on a warranty and then we are probably talking about $100 all in. I’ll wait. I’m tempted to try my hand at adding Hall effect sticks to my old pro controllers.

Re: Feature: Farewell, Nintendo Switch - It's Finally Time To Bid Our Old Friend 'Adieu'

Joekun

Recently replaced the swollen battery in my day 1 switch that rarely leaves its dock. Wish Nintendo had allowed the thing to work without a battery for the future. This old unit will move to my desk to make room for Switch 2 in the living room. Some day years from now it will get hacked.

If it hadn’t been for all the Switch Pro rumors I MIGHT have picked up a 2nd Switch to play Splatoon with my daughter, but now we will have that chance.

Re: Random: Xenoblade Chronicles X Pops Up On Microsoft PC Game Page

Joekun

Mistake for sure. I don’t pay much attention to MS and Sony, but from what I’ve heard they’ve been abandoning exclusivity. Nintendo would be unwise to follow them with demand for their brand new console super high precisely because of their exclusive games. Selling another million copies of a Xenoblade game won’t make or break anything for them.

Re: Random: This Switch-Compatible Pad Has Hall Effect Triggers, TMR Sticks & A Very Cool Button-Transforming Trick

Joekun

I’ve got 2 Switch Pro controllers with drift. I’m tempted to try and replace the sticks with Hall effect. It might be a fun project, but it’s more than I want to invest in something that might or might not work out. Now I mostly use an 8bitdo ultimate and am pretty happy with it other than the lack of hd rumble. I’m not buying a Switch 2 pro controller until I’m fairly confident the sticks are much higher quality.

Re: How Well Do You Remember Super Mario Galaxy 2?

Joekun

I have a bad memory for entertainment. It’s a blessing really. I can replay games and only have vague memories of them. But when people start talking specifics about them I have no idea after a few years even though I beat them.

Re: Talking Point: Are You Ghosting Switch 1 To Save Yourself For Switch 2?

Joekun

I go back and forth between movies and gaming. Switch 2 hype has put me into gaming mode. Funny thing is, similar to the previous commenter, I started up my WiiU and finished Windwaker HD. Then I brought out my 3DS and have been playing Majora’s Mask for the first time. I would’ve played them on Switch if they were there though.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Hardware Chip Was Potentially Finalised As Early As 2021

Joekun

As others have said, what matters are the games. We are likely to see some amazing new experiences from the best developer in the world with hardware more powerful than anything they’ve developed on before. If I cared about 4K/120 with all the latest graphics tech then I would spend $2k+ on a gaming PC and upgrade it often. But then I wouldn’t have Nintendo’s latest games, so what’s the point?

Re: Talking Point: With Prices Rising, Are Your Gaming Habits Changing?

Joekun

A lot of interesting comments here. I find myself more interested in gaming news than actual gaming a lot of times. But in my very limited free time I go back and forth between movies and games. I’m in a gaming mood at the moment, which means I’ve put in about 3 hours of gaming in the past week. A lot of the Switch generation was spent building up a library of physical games on sale that I mostly didn’t have time to play. I’m getting switch 2 out of excitement for better performance (hopefully on some of those Switch 1 games I haven’t played yet) along with the next big Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pikmin, etc.

With prices going up and fewer games actually on cartridge I will be slowing WAY down on purchases. I’m still open to sales, but if it isn’t on the cartridge I probably won’t buy. Who knows if the servers will even be up when I get around to playing?

Re: Shuhei Yoshida On Higher Switch 2 Game Prices: "It Was Going To Happen Eventually"

Joekun

“people expect games that are ever more ambitious and therefore expensive to develop”

Do they though? Does every game need to be some massive AAA game? Do we even really need more than a couple of those a year? The indie game scene is hot, and they don’t generally have crazy budgets. Maybe “get gud” at making games instead of pushing slightly better graphics over gameplay. I was listening to Digital Foundry talk about path tracing in the new Doom game and how you really have to look closely to see the difference between that and the ray tracing version. How much development cost is going into that and how many more sales will it lead to?

In a way this higher pricing will really make most gamers think twice about which games they REALLY want to own. Especially when they’re digital and can’t be resold.

Re: You Can Now Hide Those Naughty Hentai Games On Switch

Joekun

They really need to hide games above the allowed rating level when parental controls are active. Not much of an issue for me anymore, but when my kids were younger some of the title images were a bit much for little kids. Not 100% sure anymore but I think titles like Doom and Diablo were the ones I didn’t really want to have front and center when they turned on the console due to scary looking demons. It would be pretty simple just to hide them and then show them when the parental controls are disabled.

Re: Talking Point: Which Nintendo Series Are You Most Excited To See Return On Switch 2?

Joekun

Zelda will probably always be number one. I’m actually finishing up Windwaker HD on WiiU at the moment. I was really happy when they announced we’d get a new Zelda of some type every year. It sucks that the Warriors games are part of that rotation, especially after the mediocre Echoes of Wisdom. Hopefully next year we will get something cool. Not expecting a new mainline entry for a few more years, but anything is better than a Warriors game.

Re: Poll: GameStop Offers A Tempting Switch 2 Trade-In Deal, But Is It Really Worth It?

Joekun

Not worth it. Plus the Switch 2 will mark the first time we’ve had two Switches in the house so maybe we can play some Splatoon together.

My battery expanded at one point and caused some damage to the backplate. I eventually opened the Switch and replaced it, but the process was not easy and some screws got stripped and didn’t get put back. Some of the work would definitely be noticed and I’d get even less than $125. Maybe enough for a new pro controller if I was lucky. I’d rather keep it around and one day use it as a replacement for my PSP as a retro gaming machine.
