I’m sticking with no subscription. Can’t abide paying a recurring fee for something I may or may not use for extended periods. I’ve had the standard tier on and off here and there but only played the classic games for a few minutes at most. Put them on a cartridge and I’d love to have them ready to play any time I want them though.
Happy for those that get a lot of value out of it though. Carry on.
I loved HD Rumble, but outside of 1-2 Switch nothing interesting was ever done with it. In the last few years I switched to an 8bitdo controller after 2 pro controllers failed due to drift. At first I would’ve been unhappy to lose HD Rumble, but it wasn’t an issue. I hope things will be different this time.
I own 200+ physical switch games. Digital makes it much easier to say no to a game. It will never be out of stock, it will never be out of print. So I’m much more likely to wait for a game to be ultra cheap or pass on it altogether. Not going to take a chance on a pricey game I might not click with. I have to be 100% sure I’m going to love it. I’m probably not the majority of the market, but I definitely bring up the attach rate.
Not a single game I want to play day 1. Not a fan of Mario Kart, although this new one looked cool from the trailer. Not willing to take a chance on it for the price they’re asking. If the cartridge came with the bundle I’d give it a go, but with digital if it isn’t for me I’m stuck with it.
When these were announced I was thinking I’m definitely getting new Switch 2 Zelda cartridges with the completed version of the game plus the upgrades. But not only are the prices too high to consider that, YOU’RE NOT EVEN GETTING THE UPGRADE ON THE CARTRIDGE! I’m holding out. I played and beat those games. I can wait.
Starting to think this could be a pivot to getting much more from the “GOTTA HAVE IT DAY 1!!!!” gamers and then offering a bit more in the way of sales and possibly a players choice series after sales have slowed for a decent length of time. Maybe even digital only for the players choice.
They don’t make it clear that you have to have a current Switch Online membership to be eligible in the US. It just says you must’ve HAD one. Hopefully that’s the case as I haven’t had one for a few years.
I’m not a fan of Mario Kart, but watching the game footage I was thinking maybe I’d pick it up on sale. They totally lost me at $80.
All the bad news post direct has me wavering on even buying the new system. There’s no killer game for me, the Switch 2 Editions don’t come on a cartridge, and I feel like the price of the system is way too high for this to have the kind of success Switch did maintaining its price. Amazing job Nintendo! You turned a sure buy into a disappointed customer. I could afford it, just not sure I want to pay for what you’re offering.
If not for Japanese games I probably would’ve given up gaming long ago. First and foremost I like a lot of Nintendo made games, then other Japanese games, and indie games that take inspiration from the other two. Finally there are a handful of western developed titles that I like, but not enough for me to buy a console or put money into a gaming PC.
@AllieKitsune No expectation whatsoever. I’m not the kind of person who expects everything to cater to me. If I were then my first demand would be to cease usage of the atrocious “word” shmup, lol.
I’m sure it will sell well, but MK8 clearly wasn’t enough to sell WiiU systems. Luckily Nintendo is focused on one console now and 3rd parties are on board to hopefully build a compelling library worthy of an upgrade. I’m not into racing games at all, but backwards compatibility and the promise of future Zelda and Mario entries is enough for me to jump from my day one Switch despite no games announced yet. I never bought a WiiU because it never got an original Zelda.
So many great games, but one masterpiece that stands above every other game ever made.
Interesting that despite all the hope online for Echoes of Wisdom when it was announced, not a single person has voted for it. That game might be the biggest disappointment of the generation. Not because it’s bad, but because it just can’t live up to the series.
Don’t care about Mario Kart (I’ve tried enough times). Improvement to switch 1 games will be enough for me to be excited because we know Nintendo games WILL come, but Mario and Zelda are my thing. New Mario and a Zelda remaster would be enough to start things off. Also interested in FF7 remake, maybe Elden Ring. Let’s go!
I think it’s either $350 or $400. The last 2 generations Nintendo has kept the price steady. I expect them to keep that up. They won’t want to start TOO high and costs will come down while the price will remain the same.
Taxes are taxes we pay them one way or another. I would prefer to tax goods over income because when you tax something you get less of it. If we get tariffs along with real income tax reform it's likely to lead to good things. Meanwhile some people will proclaim the sky is falling because their preferred political team isn't the one in power. They very likely downplayed tax increases when their "team" enacted them. Strange world we live in.
All things being equal I buy my games from Best Buy. I get 5% back from my Best Buy credit card plus 1% gold points (assuming I paid full price, which is rare, so I'm actually getting more than 1%). Not to mention I regularly get 5% back when I use that card on groceries so the points pile up quickly and I get free games. Overall I think that buying digital is more expensive than buying physical, at least where I am in the U.S. That's to be expected since digital only has one seller, Nintendo. With Physical there is still some competition between Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Wal Mart, etc.
I'm not looking forward to an all digital future and TBH when it happens I will be buying A LOT fewer games. Maybe it's just me, but I'm a lot less likely to even play a digital game. It has to be truly special for me to even remember it exists on my SD Card. Maybe it's a generational thing, but in my mind digital goods have little to no value. I'm not the only one though, look at the prices on mobile app stores, or the sales on Steam. Now if we saw eShop prices like that it would be a different story, but $70? If it's not an absolute top tier Nintendo title no thanks.
If someone were ever to buy Nintendo that would probably be the end of AAA gaming for me. I have very little interest in modern western style games that are mostly chasing the cinematic experience. Nintendo is consistently focused on great gameplay and that’s why I’m here.
Hopefully it will continue to be optional. I played a lot of Splatoon 2 back when the service was free. Once it went paid I had had my fill of online gaming and went without. I prefer offline games for the most part anyway.
@Dan420 Nintendo has “no plans” for a price drop. But they will have plans for a price drop right around the time of the Switch 2 release. This is the same Nintendo that had “no plans” to announce new Switch hardware like the day before they announced the OLED.
My price prediction is still $350 to $400 for Switch 2. I don’t see it going higher.
All the reprints and rereleases really slowed my game purchases down. There’s really no need to buy a game for Switch unless it’s cheap because you’ll always be able to get it for retail price if there’s even mild demand for it. Takes some of the fun out of the hobby, but it’s better for my wallet.
@itsgood2slide You and me both! I tried it on Wii and didn’t get too far. Imported the Switch cartridge and still couldn’t get through it. I want to love the game, but I don’t.
Bloodstained was great, anything in that vain would be welcome. Modern 3D games are usually just an attempt at an interactive movie. I’m not interested in that at all. So unless they’ve got some kind of BOTW level idea for a 3D game I say go back to what worked and give it some modern polish.
Not sure why people are taking the no plans to drop prices on Switch hardware seriously. Those prices will drop. He just doesn’t want to say that now and discourage people from buying what’s on shelves. The 2 will be $349 - $399.
At the end of 2023 I would’ve pegged a 2024 Switch 2 release date as a 100% certainty. 8 years is an awfully long run without a spec bump. It would’ve been more tolerable if we got a Switch Pro back in 2021. I love the Switch, but I don’t enjoy playing a new game like Echoes of Wisdom riddled with slowdown.
I have more than enough software for Switch. I really want a little performance increase with the backwards compatibility of Switch 2 (yeah, I know). I’m expecting new games to start at $70 and I’m going to be much more selective with game purchases. But bring it on already. My body is ready.
@teamdave2002 You can like the terminology or even not care about it, I can dislike it. No one is disputing facts. PinderSchloss gave an opinion on terminology and I supported it. You don't. That's fine. Language changes and evolves and I have opinions on how it does so.
My daughters are older and not gamers. My youngest who is 12 will play and she plays as Yoshi. The awful thing about that is it’s almost impossible not to constantly jump on Yoshi.
@PinderSchloss YES! The word “consumer” is so reductive and insulting. I’m not “consuming” their products (aren’t they supposed to taste bitter anyway, lol). Player would be great, or customer.
I'm in for one. By the time it comes out I'll have enough Best Buy credit to pay for it anyway. My day 1 Switch is still going. I replaced the battery recently. I know there will be plenty of Nintendo software that I will want this year and the last two generations haven't had meaningful discounts on hardware that make it worth it to wait. I am hoping that it will give Switch 1 games a boost enough to solve frame rate issues. Also hoping that Metroid Prime 4 will be better on the new hardware.
I don’t subscribe to the service. I despise monthly fees. Glad it’s there for people who want it, but if they would have released collections of their old games on cartridge for those who want to own them I likely would have bought every collection.
We don’t need bigger mostly empty game boxes. Although given how no game is ever allowed to go out of print on switch. I will be less likely to pick up as many next gen games as I did this time around. It takes the fun out of collecting games, so I’ll do less of that.
@NinChocolate It’s a big deal when you got that preorder at a 20% discount. Luckily I also preordered it at Best Buy before my 20% gamer discount expired because I thought at least one of them would do this. Hopefully Best Buy still comes through.
I own a pc. It’s just never been a gaming machine for me since…I don’t know, Quake 3? Unreal Tournament? I lost interest in FPSs decades ago. I like Nintendo games and buy Nintendo systems. When they stop making physical games I’ll likely stop buying. My backlog will keep me busy after that.
I’ll check this out on sale. I’ve never finished a Mario RPG. I think I tried the Wii one when it came out because TTYD was so highly regarded people were excited for the new one. I have Origami King, but meh. Not sure this series is for me. But for $30 or so I’d be willing to try. Maybe I. Another year.

Re: Elden Ring's Switch 2 Physical Version Seemingly Tarnished By 'Game-Key Card' Release
Any game not on a cartridge is a hard pass for me. I was curious about Elden Ring, but I waited this long. It’s gotta be
1) Full game on cart or
2) A game I’m 100% going to love and play starting today or
3) Cheaper than dirt (for Elden ring that’s probably under $10).
Re: Nintendo Outlines Switch Online's Updated Tiers Including Switch 2 Exclusives
