Amazon mistakenly revealed the limited edition of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U earlier today, complete with an image of the box – which you can see above – and a US price tag.
The bundle itself contains the game, a special GameCube controller bearing the Super Smash Bros. logo, and the necessary adapter in order to use the controller on the console.
The bundle was announced a while ago, but this is the first image we have of the item, which also shows the Amiibo branding that may very well be used on all future titles that use the interactive figurines.
The bundle was listed at $100, but if you were more interested in getting everything seperately you'll find yourself spending $10 on top of that.
Does this bundle tickle your fancy? Let us know in the comments section!

There's no way I can resist this. NO. WAY.
I like it.
They never said that the gamecube adapter works with anything else did they?
Hm, 10$ saved? Good, that means I'm not all that pressured to get that bundle... 'cause I'm starting to doubt the game.
@Tsuzura I think Nintendo mentioned patching in GameCube support for some games (like Mario Kart 8), but since quite a few WiiU games require all buttons on the GamePad, it's probably not going overboard.
Well I hope the adapter is sold separately and that it works with my Wavebird.
Meh, I have a Pro controller. lol
However, I'm not buying it until it's confirmed that it'll work with other games, or something as long as it works outside of Smash as well.
UK release?
Oh dear Lord. I need this.
This has been in my Amazon cart for over a month. Not sure why they are saying it was mistakenly reveled today?
This bundle is the main thing keeping me from preordering Smash Bros right now - want to know whether it'll be just as playable with pro controllers and whether there's support planned for other titles...
Vary nice!! Now to get a release date for the Amiibo's.
So, do we know whether or not the controllers will be compatible with the GameCube and Wii systems?
Lovely. I have 2 or 3 GC pads around but a fresh Smash Bros. Pad would be sweet. Can't wait!
I have to expect that the Gamecube controller will be compatible with Virtual Console titles and even Wii U titles and that they'll implement support for future releases, otherwise if I'm gonna buy a new controller I'm gonna get either a Wii Classic controller or a Wii U Pro controller. Is there anywhere we've heard how much the adaptor alone costs yet? Because that's something I might be interested in if it's >£10
I would get it if the GC controller is supported for playing other games, like VC or even more. But if it is only for Smash, I'm not really interested. I'd rather get a Wii U Pro Controller in that case.
I love the GC controller... but I am not a competitive player and could care less about a wired connection. I would rather have a GC-shaped Pro Controller so I can sit on my couch comfortably as opposed to being limited by the length of the cord...
I don't have a Wii U. So I was hoping on a bundle with this including Wii U.
Looks like i have to buy it separately.
Will this also work with Mario Kart?
@Xiao_Pai Ha, casuals.
Must get. Nordic pre-order nao plz!
@Nimious ....I'm going to assume you're just joking around. >.>
Already got my bundle pre-ordered.
Got mine pre ordered already.
If it acts exactly like a Pro controller, I'll probably get this bundle, as I only have one Pro controller, and I host way too many GE:S LAN parties. 007 Legends is actually decent as a (semi) console exclusive.
Won't be getting this.
I want digital eshop copy, gamecube controller adapter and the satisfactory of dusting of my wavebird (the greatest controller ever made) for use on a game in 2014. It won't know what hit it.
I have no idea why the wii u pro controller was a poor 360 styled pad, it's awful. They had, for its time, the greatest pad ever as a stock controller in the gamecube. They should have just evolved that with minor tweaks to number of buttons and their layout, bluetooth connection and rightstick adjustment
I definitely plan on getting the bundle. I loved the Gamecube controller, and even if I don't use it much in the new SSB, it'll be great to have another one. My real hope, though, is that the adapter is the first step in bringing Gamecube games to the Wii U VC. If there's even a slight chance of that happening, I want to be ready.
please come to Europe!
Fancy, tickled.
I already have the game preordered at Best Buy, and I'll get that special coin for reserving it the day of the Smash demo. I wonder if I can make my preorder this instead of the regular game.
I really want this, not so much for the Controller, but cause my friends still use their GameCube controllers. That way people can use whatever style they want.
Tempted......
I feel like we'll see GC games on VC in 2015 and that may be one of the uses for the adapter and controller in the future.
They should really include an amiibo in the box as well. Giving consumers at least one amiibo will encourage them to buy more. Those are just my thoughts.
I like the GC controller but people gives it more praise than it deserves. I don't see why I should spend 100 dls just for an adapter and a controller that. seriously, is not necessary at all to play the game.
The only reason why we are having this is because nintendo developers cannot stand the fact that the 99% of the world didn't liked the Gamecube and they still resent that. You can sense how it was the favorite console of miyamoto, aounuma, sakurai and pals and how they hated the wii remote and its acceptance instead.
This is nintendo getting out of control.
@Nimious Ha, elitism. Just nice.
Still no official release date.
I doubt I'd have $100 by the time the Wii U Version releases, but I hope I do since I need a 4th GC Controller and the adapter so I can actually use it for SSB4.
The hype is real. That case is going to be a nice display piece next to the rest of our Wii U collection.
@DESS-M-8 Me too. I was tempted to buy retail copies for Smash Wii U/3DS, but I want instant Smash, and it won't ever be leaving my system, so I decided to go digital just for these games. I'll still get the adapter, and have four Wavebirds ready to go!
I would like to think that Nintendo haven't forgotten us here in Europe and that this will come to us.
@minotaurgamer Right. I'm sure that's EXACTLY why they are putting out the GC controller for SSBU.
I swear I have read on more than one article that this gc adapter will allow us to play Wii VC games that require a wii pro controller (or whatever it is called). Regardless I am getting this bundle!
@kupocake: "want to know whether it'll be just as playable with pro controllers and whether there's support planned for other titles..." I'm interested in these same 2 aspects of the adapter.
@Everyone_Else: Competitive fighters will all have to use the same controller, as I'm sure there's lag w/ every button press, & joystick movement, due to the adapter being add-on hardware, as opposed to system built-in.
I wish we could pre-order this in Canada. If you buy everything separately it works out to C$130 on amazon.ca.
I will only get it if the GC controller is supported by other games. If not, Pro controller for me. The wireless lag should be insignificant.
99.9% of the people here in the comments aren't competitive Smashers. No wonder they're like "PRO CONTOLERS IZ BETTER!!" lol.
There's only like 3 people here who are interested in this. Extremely sad.
For everybody complaining, as the article clearly states -
"The bundle was announced a while ago, but this is the first image we have of the item,"
According to Amazon I added this to my wish llst Sunday but it is possible the box art is new, I only recall the game box art before now.
They should re-release MK8 w/ that amiibo sticker on it adn mentioning all the DLC on the back. Or at least an amiibo sticker. And whoever said i tabove, yeah add an amiibo into this box.
We have a Pro U, a Wii Pro and several Wiimote-nunchuck sets so I don't think we need this. If Nintnedo wanted us to use Gmaecube controllers on the Wii U then they should have left the connectors in like the Wii had.
Gamepad is for me but give the fans what they want. Is there going to be a Wii U bundle like the 3DS? That'll blow up in sales (you know,if people actually would spend that much)
This bundle has been available on Amazon since the announced the GC adapter the only difference now is that they have a pretty nice picture.
@rjejr i understand ur concern to save money but this nice bundle is optional so its not like u have to buy it. But as for me this bundle sounds pretty sweet especially the price! Game = $60, GC adapter = $20 & GC SSB edition controller =$40 A total of $120…an im only paying $100 sounds pretty darn sweet to me! But let us discuss the real issue at hand…Nintendo give us an official SSB WiiU Release Date!!!!!!
It is an interesting idea but it to me feels like they are just pushing the pro-controller aside.
@SockoMario
I'm a pretty hardcore Smash Bros. fan and personally, I just find the pro-controller a more comfortable controller to hold. The only reason why there is an uproar for it is because people uses it for both Melee and Brawl and therefore don't want to accept change. But really, people adjusted from the N64 to the gamecube controller no problem. The Wii was a bit awkward due to it relying heavily on motion controls and no offence to the classic controller, it... just didn't feel that great as a controller but now they have the pro-controller which is quite comfortable to hold and yet.... they are just tossing the controller aside really to stay in the past.
@ikki5 They're doing this because the fans wanted it. And if that generates sales, then its a good thing.
Oh dear god. If this is released in Europe I must get it no matter what.
Would be nice if they made a wireless one. I have given up on wires some time ago.
@ZenTurtle cool story bro.
Anyways, im not paying 30$ for the controller. I can get original controller cheaper than this. So the smash logo isnt enough for me to pay 25$ more...
Still, I will get the adapter :3
I hope other games can be played with the GCN controller.
@ZenTurtle You hate options.
i really hope that they release a double or a single adapter because i'm never going to have 4 people wanting to play with GC controllers and it's not really worth me buying one with 4 inputs
@Gridatttack Where did you find Gamecube controllers (official ones, not the garbage 3rd party ones) for $5? Also, are they used or brand new?
@SockoMario
I dislike the fact that Nintendo wouldn't sell or support GameCube controllers when GC controllers actually had a purpose (playing GC games on wii), and now they're available for one game, and it's supposed to be this great console that they loved forever. I also dislike the fact that they took all the GC ports out because it was a dead console, now they charge extra for an adapter. I actually don't dislike the idea of using a GC controller, it just feels like a regression, considering it was two console generations ago. They should have just made GC controllers the controller for playing non-motion controlled games, then I wouldn't feel like this is a cynical money making exercise. It's hypocritical - GC was a massive flop, try to erase it from living memory, now it's great, GameCube was so popular and well loved by all that we absolutely must support it!
I'm hoping Nintendo UK shed light on this soon to avoid another Bayonetta 2 situation.
@Gridatttack Please tell me where it is possible to get brand new first party GCN controllers for $5, I'd really love to know.
You know what would tickle my fancy? A confirmed release date.
@Jazzer94 I think we can safely say it's coming to the UK as all Smash Wii U matches at EGX London (so far) were with GCN controllers.
@IceClimbers @Jazzer94 I wish there was a worlwide accesible store, but I got mine from the local flea market here. But yes, they are used, not new.
They are tons (the gamecube was really popular here. However people tended to sell their console to get a new one)
The catch, I must search them manually to be in good condition(they are some controllers in terrible position), but I found 2 the other day. They were in good shape (just needed a bit of cleaning) and the rubber on the stick was there, with minor wearing. It also depends on the place tho. I nabbed the first one for 5$ and the second one for 6$
@Grumblevolcano I know they were at egx as I played the Wii U version yesterday but I want to know if we will be getting the bundle.
@WanderingPB - "But let us discuss the real issue at hand…Nintendo give us an official SSB WiiU Release Date!!!!!!"
Wasn't going to mention that, for a change, but since you brought it up I'll gladly repost it.
I am tempted but I dont need the controller, I already have 6 Wavebirds.
@minotaurgamer Lmao, that's not even a case of Elitism. Search up the definition. I know what I'm doing is called.
Or do you actually believe using an over decade old controller that costs $30 or so is Elitism when compared to a modern controller that costs $50? Ridiculous . I'm just being a purist as will most of the Smash community when it comes to a controller for Smash.
@rjejr LMAO! I was actually surprised u didnt im hoping once SSB 3DS launches we'll get sum more Bayonetta 2 advertising, SSB WiiU & Capt Toad release dates and a more in depth explanation of what else the Amiibos can do…or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part
SEXY!
I'll just get the game, the GameCube controller and adapter can wait later when Nintendo starts bringing GameCube VC to Wii U.
@Xcape_DuCkMAN_X Here you go.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/09/nintendo_advert_confirms_november_21st_launch_date_for_super_smash_bros_wii_u
Granted, this is French, but the 3DS version is releasing the same day in NA and EU so I think there's a good chance the Wii U version will too.
I may get that, but I have 3 GCN controllers and 2 Wavebirds still, most of which are in great shape, so I reeeeally don't need another GCN controller. Once I see the breakdown of pricing I'll figure something out. All I really need is that adapter and SSBWiiU itself and I'm golden.
How did these two manage to only be rated E10+? I guess the T tradition is broken
Very nice! But $100 is a bit much. Maybe I should just get the game and adapter and use an old GC controller instead. I have six still in great condition, but I dig the Smash logo on the new one.
Is there any chance the Game Cube adapter will be usable with Wii Software? I own a controller adapter to play VC games with an SNES controller and would love to be able to utilize the Game Cube ports again...
Some advice for anyone thinking about buying a special controller for Smash:
Don't know if GC controller will be compatible with future titles. I think it's a fair assumption, but no one can be 100% sure until further confirmation. I would think, at the very least, it will be compatible with Wii Games and Wii VC games that were compatible. I mean, as long as the controller is recognized it should work. And the adapter does just that. Makes the system recognize it. I would be shocked if the controller did not at least do that. In fact I'd wager it's almost a guarantee.
A Wii U Pro Controller, however, is guaranteed to work with just about everything, lasts 80 hours on one charge and to me, rivals even the X1 and DS4 in an ergonomic capacity. I can't recommend the Pro Controller enough. Every Wii U gamer should own at least one, maybe even two.
I already own 2 pro controllers and 2 GC controllers, but I can't resist the official Smash GC release. Even if just for this one game, I'll be playing in style
I might pick this up, but it kinda depends on my available funds.
The box looks freakin cool! Can I just have the box just to have it in my room? lol
@Giygas_95 I meant on the Smash Bros. Website. But thanks for the hookup on the article, I completely missed that one!!!
Now my question is, will there be an Amiibo bundled with it?
...Welp, time to somehow come up with $100.
Save money. Use the pro controller. Or release an adapter for the wavebird.
@ZenTurtle
Or maybe, just maybe, there wasn't demand for it back then. The Wii was the first backwards-compatible home console from Nintendo, and unlike others needed a completely separate controller for it. It wasn't even advertised as a feature. It was the Gamecube's direct successor, so most people who actually cared about BC likely had a few already.
Do you seriously think most of the 100mil. Wii owners even cared about the Gamecube to begin with? The console that only sold 30mil. or so? Now that its 2 generations old, so they have to make new ones if they want to fill the demand for it.
@minotaurgamer
Heres a crazy thought, don't buy it?
People complain that Nintendo doesn't listen to it's fans, yet when they finally_do_ you complain about it being "unnecessary". There was demand for it, i.e. people wanted this, ethey're willing to pay money for it. If that BS percentage if yours were true they wouldn't be doing it.
It looks nice! Seeing as how I already have at least three GameCube controllers, getting the adapter would only be easier on me when it comes to group play. I've had this pre-ordered for quite a while now. Can't wait to finally have it in my hands when the day comes. ^^
Seeing as my second GameCube controller broke tonight, this is just what the doctor ordered.
@kensredemption Wager all you want, nobody's gonna place a bet against it. I don't need a game-breaker for my choice, anyway.
The non-changeable item frequency, the too short Classic Mode, the absence of Smash Run on WiiU, the stages that seem too keen on gimmicks and interactivity instead of being well-structured - all of that seems minor in and around itself, but to me, this adds up to 4 player parties becoming much less entertaining than with Melee, so I'm probably not getting it.
Preordered
officially copped.
I plan to get this point blank day one and combining the fact I still have a gamecube and a wii that can do gamecube games its a win win tho I hope they start adding the gamecube Mario party games so I can play them on my wii u with gamecube controllers.
@kensredemption
A Reason to doubt the new smash on Wii U.... There has been nothing announced for it. The 3DS version, as of right now, is superior to the Wii U version as it has everything the Wii U version has except for more aside from the different stages and trophy to coincide with the games released on the platform. I would love to say there will probably be"this and that" but... I just don't know any more. Nintendo seems to miss the ball on a lot of things lately and often times I find when I am expecting something, it usually never comes and I just end up setting myself up for disappointment.
So, is Princess Peach's "The Nothing" fashion detail replacement one of the big reasons this game avoided a T rating? (Don't get your 'knickers' in a twist if you don't understand what I mean!)
This was what I have preordered. I'm eager!
@Kaze_Memaryu
"The non-changeable item frequency,"
3DS version.
"the too short Classic Mode"
Again, 3DS version. Keep in mind that Smash 3DS is suppose to be a portal experience, so that's why Classic Mode is short.
"the absence of Smash Run on WiiU"
There will probably be a new mode exclusively to the Wii U version like Smash Run.
@SockoMario Gamecube controllers aren't better, but there are people who know the layout better.
As soon as I picked up a Wii U Pro controller, it was instantly my favourite ever, whereas the gamecube one sits far down on my list, only just above the Wii Classic controller.
The Wii U Pro controller just seems to have everything in the right place for my hands, as does the gamepad.
One important question, will these new Gamecube controllers actually work on a Gamecube?
@JusticeColde Yes, they do.
Well, this is how I'm buying the game. I hope the Gamecube adapter works with my Wii games, there's so many of them that would work better with them.
Coming soon the incredible 4 MB GC memory card! The future is here!
Anyone happen to mention that Amazon states the game will be out December 31st?
@Squid Placeholder date.
Now add a Wii U and you can get my money. Don't really need the controller, as I have 2 lying around..
My Gamecube controllers barely work anymore, so yeah, I'll have to get new ones in preperation! PLEASE COME TO EUROPE
I'll probably pick this up although $100 is quite a bit to spend. I already have a lot of Gamecube controllers but I do need that adapter.
@Squid It'll probably come out the same day, November 21st.
I say yes, my wallet says no.
@SockoMario It's doubtful that the options will change on WiiU, otherwise it would create conflicting information for cross-play online and multiplayer.
The Classic Mode isn't kept short because of the 3DS version, otherwise All-Star Mode would be different as well, and making Classic Mode longer on WiiU version would mean that people would have to put more effort into the same game for the same stuff, which is kinda unfair.
And I don't really care what kind of alternative to Smash Run they include in the WiiU version. Smash Run lacks options on 3DS, but still seems the most fun out of everything.
@Shadowkiller97 So the GC controller adaptor connects to the Wii U via USB right? So surely we can just get USB extenders and still play comfortably from our sofas.
Doesn't seem like an issue to me.
Also, does anybody think there will be any kind of Wavebird announcement?
I might get 2 Smash GC controller and the adapter, 1 more Wii U pro and 2 CCPro (for Wii Mode) and I'm set.
@ZenTurtle
I think you are being a little cynical ZT. First off this was done for SSB diehards or compeditive players. Cube controllers were the choice for Wii SSB as classic and classic pro were a joke. So these peeps have all played two gens of Smash os GC controllers. If anything its fan service which is great. Many people love the cube controller and I prefer it for VC and playing cube games. If it leads to Cube VC I am all in.
Now we have a decent WiiU controller and I imagine plenty will play SSB with that. Nintendo has pretty much supported a lot of controllers on WiiU and that is great. Many games supprort gamepad, WiiU pro, wiimote, classic pro, and now where applicable GC. Why are options bad or confusing?
Last bit of info for those reading this far down....the WiiU USB adapter is being sold seperate for $20 measly bucks. Search WiiU Gamecube @gamestop. Also if U like GC form but want something more modern check out Wired Fight Pad @ GS. It is a GS exclusive 3rd party licensed by Nintendo replica controller. It is a Cllasic pro that connects to the wiimote and comes in different themes....$25 but likely limited run and released around Smash.
Im not a big fan of the Gamecube controllers personally, but I know so many people are; especially hardcore Smash fans. I think i'll stick with my Pro Controller but I may pick this up to have for when friends come by. Some may prefer to use the controller. I do like the logo on the controller, though.
I can't say I'll be putting money down for an unique Super Smash Bros. themed GameCube controller. I already have plenty of controllers that are in pretty good condition still. I would like the adapter though.
@WanderingPB - RE: amiibo - Lots and lots of wishful thinking, but thanks, I can't carry the load all by myself.
I'm guessing B2 gets some advertising closer to release, it's still a month away in the US, it's all about HW right now, which got a 2 page front spread in Gameinfomer magazine and a tv spot. I wish they would do an in-your-face "Hey Gamers, you want games, U got games = 2 action-packed Wii U exclusives HW and B2" and circulate that among the gaming mags and websites. Bayoneta has a cult following, and so do the warriors games. They'll probably spend all their money on SSB U though, if it ever gets a date
@Gridatttack
YEAH, it sure was a great read!!
AHAHA
@Nimious
I like the GC controller, but I wouldn't even think about calling myself a purist.
AHAHA, a purist, that's rich!!!!
@JaxonH
YOU MAKE ME WANT A WIIU PRO.
I've been using a wii pro controller and I don't like it. Is the wiiu one much better??
@beautifulstrong Yes. Much better. To me it's a necessity. I own an X1 and PS4, and to me the pro controller is every bit as comfortable as either of those two. Granted, it doesn't have a headphone jack for chat but, the battery life lasts 8x longer than the Dualshock 4. The pro controller is definitely the most ergonomic controller Nintendo has ever made.
I already pre-ordered it. Now I will have three Gamecube controllers, two Wii Remotes, one Gamepad, and one Pro Controller.
All I need now is that retro-SNES Pro Controller, and my life will be complete.
Three steps on the side of the box
1: Gamecube controller.
2: GC/WiiU adapter.
3: Coffee cup.
I will get this. My son is accustomed to the GameCube controller. At 4 years old he's pretty good with melee.
@rjejr im must say u took the words right out of my mouth i agree and did u find it interesting that the latest Game Informer didnt even have the Bayonetta 2 listed for October release? Or their presence PAX? I stopped seriously reading that magazine when the Wii U launched after the blatant bias most of them had towards nintendo…but i guess thats everywhere but i cant complain b/c GI magazine is free with te power rewards at gamestop
The GameCube was one of my absolute favorite consoles, with the controller being my "number one controller of all time", so this bundle was a no-brainer.. Upgraded!
@Lictur NL mods... where are you??
For those of us who plan on buying off the eShop, I hope Nintendo plans on releasing the GC Controllers & Adapter a few days earlier.
The Gamecube controller isn't wireless though? There is no excuse for that, I might still get the bundle, but Nintendo shouldn't be putting a cord on any controller today like that.
@Jaz007
Being wired is the point though, since its made with competitive players in mind who want the Gamecube controller layout and want a wired connection to ensure they have as precise an input as possible. These are fully functional Gamecube controllers, they work with the original console or Wii, to do that they can't make them wireless.
Well, they could reproduce the wavebird, but that would defeat the point of making wired controllers, and theres always the Pro controller for that anyway.
@beautifulstrong That's rich? If you can't think or go about playing Smash with anything but a Gamecube Controller then you're a purist. That's the accurate word for it.
But seeing as you think being a purist with a Gamecube Controller is funny I'm sure you're use to losing with the other controllers .
@Kaze_Memaryu
"otherwise it would create conflicting information for cross-play online and multiplayer."
UMM... what!? There is no cross-play. Sakurai even said it himself.
@Zombie_Barioth I have two Wavebirds, but I want to use the one in the bundle because of that sick logo on it.. If I feel like going wireless I'll break out my wavebird.
@B3ND3R
Exactly, I still have mine too. What I don't have is a regular GC controller, mine no longer works, so I'm glad that they're making these.
@SockoMario Hm... somehow I never noticed that it doesn't feature cross-play. I thought the exclusive stages would be excluded from the selection.
Well, then we have a dealbreaker right there - most people I'd want to play with don't have a WiiU, only a 3DS, and the 3DS version just isn't good for competitive online.
So pretty! No doubt I'm getting one of these!
sorry I'm never going to get a game physically again due to laziness.*
*and probably because I can't even drive so...
Its not flashy enough, i mean if you still have a few cube remotes sitting around like me this isnt a must. Its pretty dull and plain besides being a collectable. I still think they are going to release GCN VC specially with these remotes coming out just like they did with original vc on wii. Special controllers need to play certain games its only a natural guess over here.
