Re: Talking Point: Do You Play Zelda Games For The Story?

wollywoo

Zelda games don't have a "deep" story in terms of the usual metrics I would measure other stories by, like the characters and dialogue. What it does have is a great, evocative setting and heaps of childlike charm. I just love getting absorbed into these goofy worlds. You can't measure it against Anna Karenina or something, but it is wonderful in its own way.

I finished Banjo-Kazooie 100% on NSO. Great game, holds up pretty well. Except for the last fight with Gruntilda where the camera goes ***** every time you launch an egg for some reason which makes it almost impossible to aim. That fight was way harder than I remember.

I played Grim Fandango. I play through it once every ten years or so and it holds up so well. Don't be afraid to use a guide as the puzzles in this game are definitely in the "use every item on every possible thing" variety and you will NOT guess some of them otherwise. But the atmosphere, art, setting, music, writing and voice acting are all just top-notch and it leaves an incredible impression.

I played a bit more of Super Meat Boy 3D. It's pretty fun, even the frame rate is pretty poor on Switch 2. After a while I didn't notice.

Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda Game Would You Most Like To See Remade?

wollywoo

Ocarina for sure. Still one of the best games in the series and has some absolutely amazing dungeons. It had the 3DS remake but c'mon, we need an HD version!

Original NES game would be interesting. But after playing Binding of Isaac I've had in the back of my head a full re-imagining with a ton of new, crazy content and unpredictable stuff. Imagine bombing a wall and it reveals a cave with an item that can rewind time, or turn everything upside down, or make duplicate copies of Link, or give you a dog companion, or make you undead. Just fill it to the brim with weird, surprising secrets like that - don't telegraph them to the player at all and just let them be discovered. I think the open-ended but simple nature of LoZ world design would be great for this.

Picked up Super Meat Boy 3D which is fun although the frame rate sucks at times on Switch 2

I got into the beta for Twisted Tower which is a kinda Bioshock-like on PC where you explore a big tower that's somehow also an abandoned theme park. It's pretty good! Great atmosphere. You shoot a lot of dudes and the combat is pretty standard stuff for the most part with the typical pistol, shotgun, chain gun and so on although they're amusement park themed. It's not doing anything super special or new but I'd recommend it for the unique setting.

I picked up a couple other indie games. Way of Rhea is a puzzle platformer that I'm enjoying so far an hour or so in. And Arcane Investigations, a Phoenix-Wright like (haven't tried it yet.)

Oh and I'm playing Kena: Bridge of Spirits which I'm enjoying so far but a bit distracted by other games.

Re: Review: Super Meat Boy 3D (Switch 2) - Not The Finest Cut, But Still Tasty

wollywoo

I picked this up. Got through the first world and enjoyed it quite a bit! Controls felt weird and stiff at first, but immediately felt better when I took off the 45-degree angle lock.

Got to the second world and was quite taken aback by the performance drop. First world seemed like a solid 60 while the second world was... not. Bit disappointing! I know the Switch can handle this, games like Bananza run smooth as butter with much more complexity. I don't care if you lose all the detail and Meat Boy becomes a perfect cube, I would rather have 60FPS.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (28th March)

I uninstalled Monster Train 2 to force myself to stop playing after an ungodly number of hours in it.

I finished Minishoot Adventures. Kind of a perfect little game. Highly recommended!

I picked up Kena: Bridge of Spirits for Switch 2. Haven't played it yet because my Internet is pretty slow, but I will try it today.

While waiting for it to download, I played Banjo-Kazooie. Lovely game. I made it to Clanker's Cavern. It's not my first time - once every ten years or so I guess I have to return to play it. I wish they made more games like it.

Re: Feature: Thank You, Mum, For The Last Ocarina Of Time

wollywoo

Good for your Mom. I don't think there was ever a video game more anticipated than Zelda 64, at least to me. I didn't get it on release day because I didn't have an N64. But when all those perfect 10s rolled in I knew I would do anything to get it. I saved up everything I could and started to get perfect As since my parents paid me by the grade and eventually it was mine. Did not disappoint!

Re: Best Super Mario Games Of All Time

wollywoo

Interesting that Galaxy 1 is ahead of Galaxy 2. Having played them both in the recent re-release, I have to say that Galaxy 2 is the better game. For me it's tied with Odyssey as the best 3D game.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (7th March)

wollywoo

I picked up Minishoot' Adventures (not sure why there is an apostrophe but it's there in the logo!) based on hearing others rave about it. If you don't know, it's basically a Geometry Wars-like dual stick shooter in an otherwise very traditional Zelda world, complete with dungeons, simple puzzles, Metroidvania-like items, and so on. I had never even heard of this game. Playing it on Switch 1 because I couldn't find my Switch 2. Anyway, it's pretty good! I played it in dual-stick mode for the first hour or so but found it was too difficult so put it on the auto-fire mode, which honestly is much more fun and relaxing for me, and doesn't change the game much at all since most of the time you're just shooting at one thing at a time. Anyway, it is pretty fun! Check it out.

Re: Review: Blue Prince (Switch 2) - A Masterful Mystery, And One Of The Best Puzzlers Ever

wollywoo

I enjoyed this one. It did get a bit frustrating when I kept "losing" runs due to RNG. I rolled credits on it but didn't solve the deeper mysteries, although I got a glimpse as to what I believe is the final challenge. Unfortunately, I lost my notes that had some of my work on one of the more detailed puzzles. Maybe one day I will go back to it. I recommend it (if you have patience!)

Re: Super Meat Boy Brings Brutal 3D Platforming To Switch 2 This Year

wollywoo

Ed's doin' just fine with Binding of Isaac and Mewgenics and I don't think he's had anything bad to say about this project so I don't really care if he's involved or not. I just want to know if it's good. It all depends on how good it feels to play. Super Meat Boy absolutely nailed the controls and it's difficult to see how that would be recaptured in 3D, but if it can be done, I am absolutely the target audience as a huge fan of 3D platformers and of the original Super Meat Boy. If it gets decently good reviews than I will absolutely pick this up.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (21st February)

wollywoo

Mostly I am still playing Monster Train 2. I finally completed all the challenges but now the new DLC mode is kicking my ass. Geez that Life Mother has crazy hp.

Also been playing MewGenics now and then. It's fun but very frustrating when I lose a run due to weird random ***** because the runs are so lengthy. I also feel that I don't have a lot of options for choosing my builds. Maybe that expands more later.

Re: Ori Dev Shows 'No Rest For The Wicked' Running On Switch 2

wollywoo

Seems like a good fit for Switch! I played the Ori games on Switch 1 and loved them, especially the second one, so I'm very curious about this game. I don't like Diablo because just clicking my way through random dungeons isn't my thing, but this seems much more up my alley. I'm tempted to pick up the early access version but apparently it only has 30-40% of the world available yet so I'll just wait for the 1.0.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (14th February)

wollywoo

I picked up Mewgenics. Have put in about 10 hours so far and I'm enjoying it so far. Unfortunately my gaming time is still being eaten up mostly by Monster Train 2 for reason completely beyond my control, mainly that I'm addicted. I'm almost done with all of the challenges and I'll be sad when I'm done.

Re: Surprise! Braid: Anniversary Edition Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Just Dropped

wollywoo

It wasn't too surprising to me that the game had poor sales. Not because of Blow's opinions (which most people don't know or care about) but just because Braid is a game that really doesn't need any update. It was already beautiful the way it was. I might pick this up, though, because apparently it has a decent amount of new stuff and the original game is one of my all-time favorites.

As for Blow himself. Yeah, he has some terrible opinions and I was disappointed to learn he was a Trump supporter. But what can I say, the man has made some good games and has contributed a lot to the general discourse around video games. His philosophy of game design - that games should let you discover the "nature of the universe" by exploring the consequences of simple rules, rather than artificially introducing complexity - is pretty foundational for me.

Re: Poll: So, Do You Prefer Hollow Knight Or Silksong?

wollywoo

I really liked them both. It's hard to say which is better. Silksong is definitely more beautiful visually and the level design overall is more interesting. But I think Hollow Knight had slightly more interesting exploration as the world was a little more nonlinear if I remember correctly, and it didn't punish you as much for exploring it.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (31st January)

wollywoo

Lord help me but I just can't stop playing Monster Train 2. Especially after I realized there were more challenges that I haven't done.

I've also been picking away at Final Fantasy Tactics. I love how deep the character customization is and the story is very interesting as well.

I played some No Man's Sky with a buddy of mine. It's pretty fun to explore although it's not super deep.

And mainly, I'm waiting for Mewgenics to drop. Everything I hear about that game makes me think I will be putting an almost unhealthy number of hours into it.

Re: Review: Dispatch Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - A Cracking Superhero Caper, With Some Naughty Bits Covered Up

wollywoo

Well this is bizarre. I didn't think Nintendo was this puritanical in the year of our lord 2026. I mean it's an M-rated game. What's the big deal about a little nudity?

The game itself is great. Or rather, the TV show that makes up most of the game is great. Really smart writing - very funny with some emotional moments as well. The gameplay sections are kind of meh on their own although I didn't hate them. I'm excited to see what they do in Season 2.
