Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (29th November)

I swore I was done but I ended up falling back into Monster Train 2. It's just the ideal podcast game. When I am done at the end of the day I end up going back to something familiar that I don't have to waste time figuring out. Still activates the ol' brain cells sometimes with interesting choices, though.

And for my "real" game, I am hoping to get back into Divinity: Original Sin 2 if I have time between my various projects.

Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Meet The Team

wollywoo

I guess I'll reserve judgement as this game could still be great. But I dunno. Metroid to me is all about isolation and mood. I love the way Super Metroid communicates its simple story and characters with almost no words. I don't need anyone yapping in my ear!

Re: Poll: What Do You Make Of Link And Zelda's Live-Action Looks?

wollywoo

Looks OK. I hope it's good. It's very hard to get the tone down. Zelda is a whimsical adventure with a healthy dose of foreboding mixed in. It should make you feel that the world is ancient and full of mysteries. It should have a dose of humor but more of a light fantasy kind of humor, not Marvel--style quippy humor.

Basically, they need to just watch the intro to Wind Waker over and over and try to evoke that feeling. Princess Mononoke would be another good tone fit although it doesn't need to be quite as serious.

Re: The Game Awards Nominees Announced, Donkey Kong Bananza Up For GOTY

wollywoo

Of these I have only played DK and Silksong. Bananza was pretty fun but not quite GOTY material for me. Silksong was great and more GOTY-worthy although I never did Act 3. I haven't played E33 because it hasn't come to Switch 2 yet (crossing fingers!) I feel E33 will win just based on all the praise it has gotten.

Finally finished Mario Galaxy 2 with 120 stars. What a fabulous game. Possibly the best Mario? Not going for the green stars, though.

I got back into Divinity: Original Sin 2 and it's fantastic.

I seem to have abandoned poor Final Fantasy Tactics, even though I loved what I played of it. I will come back to you, friend. Eventually.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (1st November)

Have mostly been only playing Mario Galaxy 2 recently. It's just so good. Possibly the best 3D platformer ever made.

I started Far Cry Primal. Played for about 20 minutes. It didn't really grab me.

I dropped back into Monster Train 2 for one run. I had sworn I was done with that game. But what can I say, it's the ultimate podcast/youtube type game for me.

Today I might get back into Divinity: Original Sin 2. I was loving that game but I dropped it a month ago when I moved recently. It doesn't have the same production value as Baldur's Gate 3 but it's just as addictive.

Re: "Go Tell Nintendo" - Ex-Blizzard President Responds After Xbox Calls Exclusives "Antiquated"

wollywoo

Xbox seems to have been mostly failing. They are propped up by a $1T conglomerate. They've bought their way into power with many corporate purchases, like Activision-Blizzard and Bethesda. But they can't make them exclusive, because that could open them up to devastating antitrust suits. So of course, for them exclusives are antiquated. Meanwhile Nintendo has a library of exclusives based on 40 years of development, mostly by their own employees. So they take a very different view.

Mario Galaxy 2. This game is so good! I played 1 and 2 on the Wii at the time 2 came out, but this time I am realizing how much better it is than Galaxy 1. More pure platforming goodness, less wandering around. Don't get me wrong, I love wandering around in games like Mario Odyssey, but the more open levels in Galaxy 1 are not as interesting and well-designed as the kingdoms of Odyssey. Galaxy 2 throws so many interesting ideas at you and each galaxy feels so unique.

Silksong. I "beat" this game by finishing Act 2, but I haven't figured out how to start Act 3 yet. I've picked this up a few more times but I don't know if I have the patience to get the best ending.

I've also played some obscure indie games.

Metal Garden. A friend gifted this to me. It's pretty good! Although definitely a no-budget game. It has an interesting world, with the game taking place inside one huge megastructure. Cool atmosphere. Feels a lot like Half-Life.

Trash the Planet. Free on Itch. https://thisgameishaunted.itch.io/trash-the-planet Kinda amazing idle clicker game. Very addictive, as these games are, but this one has an interesting story to it with a lot of very funny, well-written dialogue.

Mosaica. Cool, short "Metroidbrainia" type puzzle game. If you like The Witness you might check it out. https://ballyhoot.itch.io/mosaica

Re: PSA: Switch 2 Launch Title Cyberpunk 2077 Gets A Big eShop Discount In New Sale (US)

wollywoo

@Bowie1979 Yeah, and I found the missions to be so on-rails that I felt a bit trapped in them. I prefer where I can just wander around and do my thing. BOTW/TOTK were great at that. Or games like Mario Galaxy 2 which I am currently playing which is totally on-rails but is more "pure gameplay" where I can listen to a podcast while playing. Cyberpunk is certainly a good game, it feels a bit tiresome for me for some reason.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (18th October)

Too many things! I have been playing several very good games and not coming back just due to other distractions.

I "finished" Mario Galaxy 1 at 106 stars or so when I realized the rest of the game is only collecting 100 purple coins in most stages. I got all 120 back in the Wii days and I don't know how I managed the crazy Mario pixel art challenge. Will most likely start SMG2 today.

I moved recently and so lost momentum with Divinity: Original Sin 2, where I had just made it out of Fort Joy. I loved what I played and so I will come back.

I "finished" Silksong (Act 2). Loved what I played but not sure if I have the patience for Act 3. Not sure at the moment how to even get there (don't tell me.)

I also want to come back to Final Fantasy Tactics. Loved the crazy depth in the job system.

I played some WarGroove with a friend. We were going to play Advance Wars but that is still $50 or $60 or whatever on the eShop while WarGroove was only $6 on Steam, so I gifted it to him. The AI is quite bad but there are some 2P coop maps seemingly designed around the bad AI which give the AI a big advantage to make up for its dumbness. Man those types of games are fun.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Fatal Fury Special (SNES)

What's with anime/video game characters having that very specific cross-shaped scar you see here on the mullet dude in the JP version and also on Zangief. How would you even get that shape of scar? I guess they got slashed twice by happenstance in the same place from different angles.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th October)

wollywoo

I somehow find myself in a deluge of great games to play at the moment.

Final Fantasy Tactics Remastered - I played the original on PS1 when I was young but could never make it far. This time around I'm better understanding the nuance of the character customization and the job system. Holy hell, there are so many options and it's so deep! It's really addictive even if I've barely made a dent in the story. I just keep doing the random battles and leveling up jobs. It's fun.

Divinity: Original Sin 2. I had the CRPG itch and started this up. It's quite good! Really enjoying the story and the battles. I just made it to the point where I can escape Fort Joy but I am mopping up all the enemies and finishing the quests there.

Cyberpunk 2077. Actually it's been a couple weeks since I've played this, but I think I will come back to it. Enjoying it, but somehow I find that AAA games like this with zillions of lines of spoken dialogue tire me out quickly and I want to return to something snappier.

Hollow Knight: Silksong. Man, this game is good. It's just so beautiful to look at and feels great to play. I'm nearly to the end of Act 2, I think. I spent way too long on a certain battle arena only to find out it has seemingly infinite waves.

Super Mario Galaxy. This is one of my favorite games of all time so of course I had to pick it up. This and SMG2 always blend together in my mind because I originally played them back-to-back like one very long game. I'm finding picking up the star bits a little bit tedious with the touch controls. It's decent, but not as seemless as it was with the Wiimote. I kinda have to stop what I'm doing for a sec to use the touch screen and I find the motion controls for it to work poorly. But anyway, there's almost nothing as joyous in all of video games as launching yourself into orbit around one of the tiny planets.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (27th September)

wollywoo

Silksong, of course, which is great! I beat the Last Judge after umpteen attempts and so things are very interesting now. However, I've found myself unaccountably distracted by...

Divinity: Original Sin 2. I played through all of Baldur's Gate 3 around the time that came out and loved it, and found myself weirdly craving for another CRPG of that ilk. Well, D:OS2 does it! I'm still in early days, wandering around soaking up all the quests in Fort Joy before I move on. Enjoying it a lot! It's fun and sometimes frustrating in the same way BG3 was. I wish the UI was clearer, because at times it's hard to see which characters are which. And the damn black cat NPC keeps dying in stupid ways, making me re-start battles and losing progress. But overall, I am enjoying it a lot.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews For Hades II On Switch And Switch 2 Are In

wollywoo

Woohoo, this game is getting so much praise. 2025 is turning out to be a crazy year. Hades 2, Expedition 33, Donkey Kong Bananza, Silksong, and soon Ghosts of Yotei, any one of which could be GOTY worthy. I'll probably pick this up eventually on Switch 2, but Silksong has its hooks in me at the moment.

Re: Opinion: Why Focus On Silksong's Difficulty When We Need To Talk About How Cute It is?

wollywoo

I think in general you will do better in this game if you are just calm and resolve that you will take dozens of tries to beat a given boss. Then just relax and get into the zen of it. Kinda like exercise. If you think at every moment about how many more miles you have to run, it will seem like forever. But if you just resolve that you'll keep on going regardless, and put your mind on something else while your body keeps going, it doesn't seem as bad. It helps to listen to an audiobook or podcast. And conversely, I really like listening to audiobooks and podcasts and I find I really need something to do with my hands while I listen or I go crazy.

Re: Opinion: Why Focus On Silksong's Difficulty When We Need To Talk About How Cute It is?

wollywoo

@MoldyPasta Yeah I learned this the hard way. I had learned throughout the fight that you want to keep The Last Judge on your screen almost all the time, because otherwise you won't see when they begin an attack that will strike you all the way across the room. I thought I had won so I go over to investigate what is happening. And oops, bye bye last mask! Took me another 5-10 tries before I was able to do that again...

Re: Opinion: Why Focus On Silksong's Difficulty When We Need To Talk About How Cute It is?

wollywoo

As for the difficulty conversation - I think the challenge adds a lot of satisfaction to this game. But I think that an Easy Mode of some sort would allow a lot more people to enjoy it and wouldn't take anything away from the challenge for those who want it. I really don't see a downside to that. And the runbacks and the losing silk mechanic don't add much to the game except for the tedium of having to repeat your steps over and over and punish you for exploring somewhere other than where you just died.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th September)

wollywoo

Silksong, of course. I have been stuck on The Last Judge for the past ~4-5 hours, although I think I've been pretty close. I guess I'll keep trying but if I don't get it in another 2 hours or so maybe I will say this game is not for me, although I've very much enjoyed what I've played so far.

I've felt a weird hankering for a big CRPG so I might play a bit of Divinity: Original Sin 2 which I picked up for like $5 or something on Steam a year or two ago and never got around to playing other than the character creator. I loved Baldur's Gate 3 so presumably I'd enjoy this one too.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (6th September)

wollywoo

Silksong, of course! I was going to play through Hollow Knight again first, but balked when I looked at my 35-hour first play-through and decided I didn't want to put that much time in again. Enjoying it so far. It's beautiful.

Also playing Cyberpunk. I started the expansion. Still not in love with the combat but enjoying it more as I dig further in.
