Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (30th August)

Lord help me but I started playing Hollow Knight again. It's fun! I find the souls-ish player ghost mechanic to be more annoying than tension-building, since it means that I am forced to go back where I died (sometimes a long way from any bench) instead of beingn able to explore freely. I also really wish this game had better map markers custom notes (or better yet, screenshots built into the map like Prince of Persia: Lost Crown) because I always forget where to go next. Of course, the combat is fantastic and satisfying.

Occasionally playing Mario Kart World.

Playing Cyberpunk also. Enjoying it but I have some complaints that I explained in the Cyberpunk thread.

And, I tried Return of the Obra Dinn after hearing people rave about it for so many years. It just... didn't pull me in. I'm not a fan of the Macintosh-style visuals - it makes it hard to determine what things are sometimes, and gives me a bit of nausea. I can't even tell if it's supposed to be night or day. I have a feeling this game is something you have to be in the right mood for, so I will have to give it a go again when I have more patience.

Re: Poll: Ahead Of Silksong's Release, Are You 'Finally' Playing Hollow Knight?

wollywoo

Aaand less than an hour after posting that I probably wouldn't play it again I ended up playing it for a couple hours. I had forgotten how good the sound effects were in this game. I especially love how weirdly cute the grub things are. Of course I will save them! I doubt I will play this all the way through again but sometimes it feels good to play a game you've played before as comfort food instead of something new like Cyberpunk which is currently frustrating me with it's stupidly unreactive, bullet spongy enemies and follow-the-yellow-path, checklisty gameplay. Bapanada everyone.

Re: Video: We Bought 100 Copies Of Mario Paint... For Science

wollywoo

I loved this. OK, most were duds, but it was so exciting and fun when you found actual art that took some effort. Makes me sad to think that in a few years all the save data will be gone. I wonder if there is a copy out there with some amazing original art from like, Akira Toriyama or someone like that, and what that would be worth.

Re: Poll: Ahead Of Silksong's Release, Are You 'Finally' Playing Hollow Knight?

wollywoo

It's interesting to see how many people bounced off this game. I loved it and it's probably my favorite Metroidvania. It doesn't really do anything radically different - it just takes the basic formula and does it very, very well. The combat feels really punchy and reactive. Controls are super tight and responsive. The world is absolutely huge and filled with mysteries. The music and atmosphere are perfect. The art is unique mix of cute, gross, and somber. What's not to like? Well, to each their own. That's how I feel about From games - just not for me.

Doubt I will play this as I have enough other games to keep me busy for a good while. It's kinda tempting to fire it up now, though...

Re: Hollow Knight Has Now Sold Almost 15 Million Copies

wollywoo

Deserved! It's my favorite Metroidvania, which is one of my favorite genres. The combat is so satisfyingly smooth and reactive. I also love the detail in the Bloomberg article that their lifestyles haven't changed that much. “I live in a very basic two-bedroom apartment,” he said. “Sometimes I think, ‘You know what would be better, is a one-bedroom apartment.’ Because then there’s even less to maintain.”

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Finally Has A Release Date

wollywoo

@sketchturner Yeah, from the bloomberg article.

“Launching it is obviously quite exciting,” Pellen said. “What comes after for us is equally as exciting.”

“The most interesting thing now is what can we add to it next,” Gibson said. “We got a plan. Admittedly, some of the plans for that stuff are kind of ambitious as well, but hopefully we can achieve some of it.”

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Finally Has A Release Date

This is the most elaborate Silkpost ever, what with the Youtube stream and so many simultaneous news articles from multiple sources. I can't believe y'all fell for it.

In seriousness, it looks good. But it sounds like there is a lot of DLC coming, like in the first game. If so, it makes me want to wait 2-3 years to get the Silksong: Ultimate Edition or whatever with all the stuff so it is a complete game.

I beat Majora's Mask on NSO, collecting all the masks (but nowhere close to all heart pieces.) I beat it on the N64 25 years ago but never finished the Anju and Kafei quest. Experiencing it again, I don't blame myself for that, because it's quite annoying how the easy it is to mess up the final part and have to start the whole damn 3-day cycle over again. So much better with save states. Amazing, legendary game but there were some frustrating choices made there.

I also finished DK Bananza. "Finished" with quotes, I should say, because I only got some ~430 bananas. I guess there are hundreds more to go?! I'll probably play this here and there when I am bored but I doubt I will 100% it. Great game with an amazing ending. Doesn't quite beat out Mario Galaxy or Odyssey for me in terms of sheer platforming joy.

Picked up Cyberpunk. It's neat! I kinda wish I could experience it on a huge screen running on a high-end PC but for now in my life it will need to be hand-held. I'm enjoying experiencing the world even if I'm not picking up on every subtlety of the plot just yet - there are so many people and places and factions and the in-game encyclopedia is absolutely nuts (do I really need detailed descriptions of the history of EVERY car and weapon?)
In my mind this game was more of an immersive sim like Deus Ex but so far it seems more like a GTA-like with a few story choices here and there. The style and atmosphere is extremely impressive.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (9th August)

Bananza, of course. I'm 300 or so bananas in and enjoying it a lot! It's not quite at the level of Mario Galaxy or Odyssey to me yet, but it's very fun.

And I'm still getting through Majora's Mask. I am 90% of the way through the Stone Tower Temple and I'm on the night of the third day. I've given up hope of getting all the fairies on this one and just want to finish. I enjoy this game a lot but on this play-through I've found some of the temples a little tedious. Especially in Stone Tower Temple there is a lot of inventory switching between using all three masks, hookshot, ocarina, and light arrows. Still, I'm driven to finish it and I will.

Also, I'm finally done with Monster Train 2, I think. It sucked me in for nearly 200 hours, after roughly the same amount going into the first game just a short while ago when I discovered it. Incredibly, incredibly addictive, and the perfect game to play while listening to podcasts or YouTube. I was able to defeat the Titans and get to level 10 of Endless using a really crazy Rage build maxing out Rage at 9999 and now I'm ready to say goodbye.

Got a Switch 2 a couple weeks ago. Still slowly working my way through DK Bananza. The latest world I've found is very neat! I have Mario Kart World too but I've barely played it.

Also re-playing Majora's Mask. Got to Stone Temple so far. What a game.

And, I've stalled a bit on Suikoden II. I want to finish it but a certain fight destroyed my a huge part of my party, appaprently with perma-death. Yes I can reload to an earlier save but it's still aggravating and I have too many other distractions.

Re: Best Donkey Kong Games Of All Time

wollywoo

I have to go with DKC1 as my favorite. DKC2 is amazing, but the original's soundtrack just barely edges out the second one for me. DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze are also great, but for some despite having beat Tropical Freeze three times I find that it doesn't have the same staying power in my mind and DKC1 and 2 (probably because I played them at a more impressionable age.) Bananza I am playing, so I can't rank it yet, although I'm enjoying it.

Re: Video: Switch 2 Vs. Steam Deck System Face-Off, Digital Foundry Investigates

wollywoo

A ton of people saying they aren't competitors. I disagree. Yes, they have different target audiences, but those target audiences intersect a lot, and most people in the intersection won't get both of them. Like me. I am interested in the Steam Deck, but I have a Switch 2 now so I'm not getting one. There are plenty of people asking themselves "Hmm, should I get a Switch 2 or Steam Deck?" and it's worthwhile to breakdown the differences for those folks. So, everyone chill out.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (19th July)

@Dhaladog Silksong coming out soon (I can only pray it's true) means it's a great time to play Hollow Knight if you like Metroidvanias. It's difficult but fair. The controls are very smooth and the combat is quite "crunchy" and satisfying. By crunchy I mean that you always feel the impact of each hit. It has some of the best and most satisfying boss encounters of any game of this type - and a LOT of them, especially with all the DLC.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (19th July)

Agreeing with everyone else that SteamWorld Dig 2 is amazing. I have no idea why Dig 3 never happened. The loop of going down - digging up a bunch of stuff and coming back up to buy things when your pockets are full is very addictive, and I'm not entirely sure why.

I finally managed to get a Switch 2 yesterday (woohoo!) so I'll be playing DK Bananza and Mario Kart World. But ironically, what I really want to do is finish Majora's Mask that I started on Switch 1 since I couldn't get a Switch 2. It's just a phenomenal and addictive game.

Re: Review: Donkey Kong Bananza (Switch 2) - Absolutely Smashing, But Can It Beat Mario Odyssey?

wollywoo

Finally got a Switch 2! Found at Wal-Mart. I asked yesterday and they said they had a shipment coming in tomorrow (now today). Went to go look today and there was nothing on the shelves but an employee was able to grab one from the back for me! So, recommend checking Wal-Mart. Nice job Nintendo on the supply logistics this time around that they more available than the Switch 1 was near launch.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (12th July)

wollywoo

Still don't have my hands on a Switch 2, but I'm satisfied for now with enough to play on Switch 1 so I don't need it yet. In fact I kind of hope I don't see it on shelves because I might be tempted to grab it and then I might not finish the games I'm working through now. That is,

Suikoden 2 - this game is fun. Much better than Suikoden 1 because the inventory is more manageable. It's not afraid to lock you out of content. I'm using guides but somewhat sparingly. I will definitely not be able to get 108 stars but I'm OK with that.

Majora's Mask - For some reason I've been itching to play this again. Actually, I know the reason: it's because I watched some video essays praising this game and I wanted to revisit it. Well, it's pretty great! It can be frustrating at times due to the puzzles which can be a bit opaque at times and the having to repeat them over and over until you get it right. I've beat this before so I remember the broad strokes but not every detail. This game is chock-full of strange, missable details, and it seems kind of magical when you go to a place you've been before many times only to find something different and interesting there. It's much better to get the Mask of Truth ASAP so you can get a lot of hints - it's a neat feeling to read a stone and suddenly have an inspiration to go and try some weird thing and have it actually work and reward you. Out of all the Zelda games, this one is the closest to an old-school adventure game. I'd love to see the next Zelda to be a bit smaller and more interactive like this one.

Re: Donkey Kong Bananza's Director And Producer Have Been Confirmed

This interview confirms my guess that the cheese from Odyssey inspired this game. "We actually had used this voxel technology in some areas of Super Mario Odyssey previously where for example, you could dig your way through cheese in the Luncheon Kingdom or you could plow through snow in the Snow Kingdom. So this programmer was engaging in various technical experiments where you might even throw voxels or make a hole having done so."
Called it! (see my comment from an old thread https://www.nintendolife.com/previews/donkey-kong-bananza-dks-getting-his-own-odyssey-and-its-a-helluva-trip#comment8717995)
