@HylianFox Yeah, I wish I could see Hyrule Castle Town totally restored. And once, just ONCE, I would like to see Hyrule Castle as a place I can visit and not ruined or corrupted in some way.
TOTK's world is better in almost every way. Except that it's not as new. It's not able to quite re-capture the thrill of exploring a new world for the first time.
Looks pretty great. I love all the new mechanics. Only two "negatives" -
1. It looks a bit too much like BOTW. I would've preferred a whole new world instead of a changed Hyrule. I get a bit tired of the same green landscape.
2. I love all the new powers but I wonder if they are TOO powerful. The challenge of climbing up to high places was one of the most fun parts of BOTW. If you can just fly up to the top it's less meaningful.
I'm about 8 hours into Octopath II after having 100%'d Tropical Freeze for the second time. Really enjoying it! From the reviews it seems the main complaint is that it's too similar to the first one - but since I didn't play the first one, that's not a negative to me at all. Music is great, combat is good, and the storylines are intriguing so far. I just wish they could turn down the random encounter rate sometimes or have avoidable enemies. Also, while I appreciate the retro style, I wish they could up the resolution just a bit to give more detailed pixel art, and please let me turn off the depth of field like I did in Triangle Strategy (which I also loved.)
@wuntyme8 Dread wasn't all that innovative other than the EMMI stuff, and that seemed to be divisive among players although I enjoyed it. But what it was was very solid, with some of the best boss battles ever IMO. It didn't do much new and it didn't reach the heights of Hollow Knight, but it was a great experience and I had a hell of a lot of fun playing it. PS ignore the haters, I'm a fan of the corny sign-off.
Wow, great to hear this is so good! I was expecting scores in the 7-8 range but this seems to be so loved. I didn't have a lot of anticipation for this personally, because Curse was the first Monkey Island game I played (and my favorite) and I really wanted a return to that art style. I'm not a big fan of this more abstract, angular style. But if it's as good as they all say, I might have to pick it up.
Portal and Portal 2 are near-perfect gems. It's rare that gameplay and writing are both excellent and mesh so well. Really tempted to pick this up despite having played both multiple times in the past when I had a gaming PC.
I keep hearing how Suikoden II is one of the best RPGs of all time and I don't have a good way to play that, so I'm keeping an eye on this. Also, I hear there are cats.
I really love this kind of game! The Witness is great and very innovative and Outer Wilds was one of the most awe-inspiring gaming experiences I've ever had. I really hope this becomes a more common style of game in the future. (I've been calling them "knowledgevanias" but "Metroidbrania" is pretty good.)
@sketchturner If you follow him on Twitch, he sometimes streams as he does dev work. Last I heard he was working on a Sokoban-type block pushing game and also developing his own programming language. Not sure if he has any secret projects, though.
@NintendoByNature But have you played Chrono Cross before? If not, ignore the score. The review seems mostly about the quality of the port. The actual game is great.
Wooow a 6/10 seems criminal! Sounds like the reviewer was expecting a lot more from this remake, but viewed on its own term this game is great. It looks absolutely beautiful to my eyes and if you haven't played this game you should absolutely check it out! For my money it's better than Chrono Trigger. If nothing else, just listen to the score; it has one of the best video game soundtracks of all time.
Triangle Strategy mixed with a bit of Wargroove (since I can't get my Advance Wars fix). Also recently got an Oculus Quest 2 so some random things on that in the mix.
Man, Triangle Strategy is great you guys. I keep setting up traps to knock guys off cliffs and cackling like a madman when they trigger. Also the story is pretty good!
Really hard to choose between Prime and Super. At one point Super Metroid was my favorite game of all time. But Metroid Prime is a damn masterpiece. Well, they both are! But I think I will give it to Prime for how much it blew me away back in 2002.
I already have a Switch and the OLED model doesn't seem worth upgrading for. Steam Deck on the other hand... sounds rather tempting considering the enormous Steam library. Realistically though I probably won't get it anytime soon.
Hmm. It's kinda hard for me to see why you would love a bad game. A bad movie you can enjoy while making fun of it, but a bad game? If it isn't fun to play, it isn't fun to play. Of course there are flawed games that I like. The first one that comes to mind is the PC RPG Arcanum that had great worldbuilding with a very wonky and confusing battle system.
@blindsquarrel You get to go to a new area, but you don't get to really explore it the way you could in older games. There's always pre-set paths with puzzles you have to solve. That is what I meant. (At least in my memory. I haven't played it since it came out.)
I did not enjoy this game very much. The over-tutorializing was only the tip of the iceberg of problems I had with it. The motion controls didn't work that well for me, for starters.
But there's a deeper problem I have with it that's baked into the core of the game's structure and so can't be fixed with simple QoL improvements, and that's the excessive puzzling and linearity. Zelda games usually have a nice mix between a) free-roaming exploration of towns and outdoor areas and b) dungeons, which makes for very nice pacing. When I finish a dungeon, my reward is that I get to explore a new area.
In SS, this is basically gone. There is almost no (a) as ALL the towns and outdoor areas other than those in the sky are a series of puzzles that must be completed in a particular order like a dungeon. For me this makes everything a slog. I really like the freedom of just wandering around for a while exploring and talking to the locals, soaking in the unique worlds Zelda games always present. This game completely took that away and is the poorer for it.
Sad to hear, but on the other hand, I want this game to be as amazingly deep as the first game and that will take some time. I hope Team Cherry takes as long as they need. And that they get to take well-deserved breaks too.
Thanks for all the good shmup recommendations everybody! Sounds like the Switch is a great platform for the genre. I'll have to check some of these out and pick one to buy!
What's the best shmup on Switch for someone who doesn't play shmups? This or Ikaruga? I was always bad at these games but I found that they are fun on the SNES on Switch if I make constant use of save-states to avoid all the repetition and memorization.
Ryu would be a great fit. I mean yes he is a sword fighter, but he has a very different style. He's also a classic character from the NES days which gives him big bonus points in my book - I'm not as much a fan of characters coming in from JRPGs or whatever from just a few years ago. For me they have to have solidly earned their place in the gaming pantheon, and Ryu is surely up there with the greats.
@GrailUK Who says they're ruining anybody's fun? They're just making things more interesting. People are talking about it more now aren't they? I think it's more fun, not less, when there are some bad guys to root against.
Of course, if they kept doing this all the time, it would get old fast. So hopefully they restrain themselves.
@Kobeskillz Someone wrote a script to continually change their avatar with new screenshots of an ongoing Pokemon game. Others play the game by commenting with a vote on button inputs.
Come on folks. They're just griefers in a game. Wasn't that a big part of these experiments to begin with? To find out if a bunch of random people could work together or not? These guys are just playing the villain part. They're following all the rules, not doing anything wrong. I mean yes, they are acting like a-holes, but that just makes things more interesting. I for one applaud the chaos.
I made a vow to the gods long ago to buy every 3D Mario game, so I have no choice. I never had a Wii U so I can't wait to dive into this one after work. Bowser's Fury sounds amazing. Playing Blue Fire lately with its fun but somewhat finicky platforming has made me long for that Nintendo polish.
I hope it's good for single-player though - it looks like it was designed around multiplayer and I don't have anyone to play it with atm.
This article is... weird. It's basically saying "There's no real reason game prices should be this high, except for the most basic, nigh-universal law of economics, supply and demand. Someone should do something about that."
High used game prices are great. Great for the owners to make a quick buck, great for brick-and-mortar ma-and-pa used games stores to keep up a business. The only ones who it's slightly less good for are the ones who want the games and don't feel like ponying up the cash, and it's hard for me to feel too sorry for them. After all, you don't need to collect retro games. It's not some human right like food, water, shelter. And the author doesn't even play them.
I enjoy this kind of game, but really, those trees? They're almost identical to the ones in Link's Awakening, and that's such a signature Zelda style. Not to mention the bushes, bottles, and many other sprites as well. There's a difference between homage and theft. I wish the devs would be a bit more creative.
Reading between the lines, they sound a bit miffed in that last paragraph. "Next time, ask us first, idiots." I can't blame them - IIRC this was a feature already publicized to consumers. It was a bit irresponsible of Rare to advertise this feature before they knew it was safe. Still, nature of the beast - Rare was always pushing the envelope on hardware limitations and that was part of what made them great.
I've been watching a lot of Trek lately (TNG and, now, DS9) and thinking about how good a good Trek game could be. Trek has a great universe built up with many interesting cultures and ideas to take advantage of.
I'm envisioning something like Mass Effect but much more open-ended and with a lot of ship and crew customization and an emphasis on dialogue and decision making over combat. Each quest would basically be a mini-episode - investigating some anomaly, moral quandaries about the Prime Directive, etc., political intrigue between the various empires, etc. I'd want it to be with a new ship and crew, not one of the ones from the show, although characters from the shows could make guest appearances from time to time. @mariomaster96 That's the first thing I thought of too! Man, if they had an FF soundtrack lineup as strong as the one for Castlevania, the DLC would be worth it just for that.
Impressive port. Looks really fun. The original game made me a bit nauseous though, due to the frenetic movement, so I can't play it.
