Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (22nd November)

UmbreonsPapa

I just picked up Legends: AZ for a darn good price off a EBay. It’s the Switch 1 version (cause I ain’t got a Switch 2 yet). I’m probably the biggest Pokémon fan out there. But I admit let the outrageous reaction give me some hesitation. It looks and run fine so far.

As someone who had to be dragged kicking and screaming into some mechanic changes over the years, the battle system is a fun and unexpected, welcomed change. I hope they move forward with it .

Re: "Consumers Generally Do Not Care" About AI In Games, Says Former Square Enix Exec

UmbreonsPapa

While the sentiment and his comment comes across as tone deaf and a bit glib, there is some truth to it. I work in graphic design and print production. We are seeing more and more stuff being brought in that was clearly (and admittedly) created by ChatGPT or A.I in general. A lot of the resources we use to help in designing materials now has A.I tools as part of those services or sites.

Re: Official Zelda Movie Photos Give Us Our Best Look Yet At Link And Zelda

UmbreonsPapa

I mean, it looks like a live action version of Zelda. So far, so good.

What's interesting is the contrast of both Zelda and Link's outfit and what it says about the story. I thought they would of gone the safe route and adapted a plot from one of the games. Maybe their mixing elements from different games? I personally hoped it would be something very in the vein of Zelda, with all of the classic elements. But not necessarily a carbon copy of a plot already done. Essentially, a story that could have been its own entry in the series.

Re: Pokémon Pokopia Reveals "Peculiar" New Forms In Extended 10-Minute Trailer

@Solid_Python Maybe have some method of authentication on Nintendo's end that protects that particular cart from abuse, but doesn't require the cart to need to be inserted again. So once you are done with that particular game, it (and the download) would need to be deregistered from your console in order for you to sell it.

I guess in the end, it probably comes off as a little too convoluted and you're probably just better off just buying it digitally. Or maybe it should just be available physically for those that wanted. I don't know. I have no real skin in this argument yet. I am not at the point yet where this decision even comes into play for me seeing as I haven't upgraded to the Switch 2. I still have a Switch 1. I also have a Xbox Series S. So for me, I'm fine with digital in most cases, physical in others.

Re: Talking Point: When Did 'Good Enough' Become Good Enough For Pokémon?

UmbreonsPapa

I can say for sure I’ve only been disappointed really in two Pokémon mainline games:

1) X&Y

2) SwSh

They aren’t terrible games and both do somethings well. But overall, I’m left feeling underwhelmed by both for a variety of reasons.

I have yet to buy or play ZA. So I don’t really know where it’ll fall.

I did go back and played Crystal not too long ago. For the longest time, Gen 2 was my favorite. But it was a chore and a half playing through that game. Not at all how I remembered.

Re: Pokémon Legends: Z-A Sold 5.8 Million Copies Globally In Its First Week

UmbreonsPapa

@Vyacheslav333 I think Pokémon fans know very well what they're getting and getting into when they purchase and/or play a mainline Pokémon game.

And its fine if you or folks don't like the games or have issue with the quality of the games. I am not in the business of trying to convince anyone otherwise on how they feel.

What I don't understand is why others get so pressed and in their feelings when folks are enjoying something they don't.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 Switch Comparison Video Makes Nintendo's Upgrades Clearer

UmbreonsPapa

@JohnnyMind No disrespect intended. But in what reality do prices not matter? You keep bringing up starting prices as not mattering much because of discounts. That might be the case for other consoles or developers/publishers. But that is traditionally not the case for Nintendo. You also keep bringing up other regions. I would love to know what regions these great discounts exist, how much these discounts are and how long they last.

All that being said, I absolutely agree with the sentiment that, to some, the price is relative to what you personally place a value on and what your experience (or lack thereof) of these games.

Re: Video: Pokémon Legends: Z-A - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Full Gameplay Demo

UmbreonsPapa

@Znake I’ve been gaming since the NES. While rhis game isn’t a graphical revelation, it’s look is certainly not on the level of a Gamcube game (a console I owned) or a PS2 game (a console I briefly owned, but did play a lot of).

Be disappointed and done with Pokémon all you like. I’m certainly not gonna try and change your mind. But the exaggeration and hyperbole over its graphics is ridiculous.

Re: Pokémon Is Teasing Something Ahead Of Next Week's Showcase

UmbreonsPapa

I’m gonna hold off on being sure what I think a company, I have no insight into its daily going’s, is going to do. Sure, there’s precedence for some decisions. But there’s been precedence for a lot of decisions made in gaming that have been thrown out the window for whatever reasons.

With that being said, I have absolutely no expectations that Gen 10 will be announced. But I’m not gonna say it can’t happen. It also might not be a reveal in the traditional sense. More like a teaser they did for Gen 7. Just an announcement they are working on it, with a small sizzle reel of flashes of elements. But again, I have no expectations of any kind of news regarding Gen 10. Just that it’s not out the realm of possibility that at least something might be mentioned.

Re: Nintendo Has Seemingly Taken Further Steps To Combat 'eSlop' On Switch 2

UmbreonsPapa

@ShieldHero I don't know if I'd go as far as calling people manbabies in this situation. Certainly, I don't disagree that the consumer has an obligation, on their end, to research what it is they are buying and how to use whatever means of parental controls to filter content they don't like. At the same time, I don't know if I would fully expect the average person to even know enough about all publishers to know what they need to be on the lookout for to filter.

And I say this as a parent myself. You can seemingly do all the things right that you believe are at your disposal in protecting your kids from certain content. But that doesn't change the fact that there are folks out there who are gonna look to circumvent the rules, and things will slip by. My wife and I aren't as uptight about things (unless they are egregiously problematic) and have no problem talking to our kids if they happen to be exposed to something questionable. In the case of combating those who find loopholes in the system, I think a company (Nintendo in this case) has just as much responsibility in making sure its storefront has its act together content-wise. Not only for the benefit of people being exposed or not exposed to the appropriate content. But also for the benefit of it just not being a cluttered mess.

I've also said elsewhere, it makes no sense to me that a billion-dollar company doesn't have a real team in place to oversee the eShop. For a company that goes above and beyond (and sometimes too far beyond) to maintain a certain image, the fact that they let the eShop get to the point it did just makes no sense to me.

Re: Random: One GameStop Apparently Stapled Receipts To Brand New Switch 2 Boxes, And Guess What Happened...

UmbreonsPapa

@Lizuka I think it’s certainly valid to call out Nintendo for very questionable packaging.

However, this situation is all on GameStop. I find it hard to imagine, someone working in and around the gaming industry, aren’t aware of how valued a pristine or near to pristine game package is to some. So on that alone, a measure of common sense is not a stretch to expect.

Re: Early Impressions Of Pokémon Scarlet And Violet On Switch 2 Are Very Positive

UmbreonsPapa

I enjoyed Pokémon Scarlet and still play it today. With that being said, I don't disagree GF and TPC should have done a better job with the game originally.

However, my take from some of the regulars on this site is that no matter what they did to improve this game, some are just not going to be on board with it. Which is fine. People are ultimately entitled to their opinions and feelings.

Re: US Retailers Are Playing With Fire With More Switch 2 Cancellations

UmbreonsPapa

@Res462 I think the thought here is that adults should have common sense and enough critical thinking to discern what is being said.

But I do concede to your point in the sense that there are quite a few adults who don't have common sense or have critical thinking skills and might assume exactly what you did. Personally, I figured it didn't mean anything more than retailers may lose potential customers beyond the Switch 2 launch with these kinds of shenanigans.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour Trailer Highlights New Minigames & Tech Demos

UmbreonsPapa

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I don’t really understand all of the brouhaha over this.

While I don’t necessarily disagree on the sentiment that this could have been a pack in game, at the end of the day it’s not. It’s also not software you are forced to buy or required to have to use the console. So in that sense, I’m not gonna go as far as to call this or imply this as some insidious, consumer unfriendly money grab. Of course there’s some level of greed involved on their part. But that’s honestly the case of the whole shebang to begin with. At least in this situation, it’s again a game that no one is required to buy or even give a second thought to if they don’t want to.

Re: Switch eShop Update Puts Less Focus On The Terrible 'eSlop'

UmbreonsPapa

At least steps are being taken rather than throwing your hands up and not doing anything in fear of a game or two falling through the cracks.

Personally, I feel like Nintendo is and has been let off the hook way too much in this situation. I really find it hard to believe a multibillion dollar corporation doesn’t have the resources to hire a dedicated team to curate the eShop and make sure scam and scummy games don’t get through?

Re: Switch 2 'Welcome Tour' Estimated File Size Revealed By Nintendo

UmbreonsPapa

@anzzjam On partly an intellectual level, I do agree in that I think its a silly concept to present as a paid game. But I guess that's where my care about it ends. I'll probably be waiting to get a Switch 2 until a bit later. But if I had the opportunity to ever one around launch, the existence of this game and it being a paid game would really be of no significance or concern in the grand scheme of things. I guess that's where I'm experiencing the disconnect over the outrage over it.

Re: Switch 2 'Welcome Tour' Estimated File Size Revealed By Nintendo

UmbreonsPapa

@Moistnado I get your point about tech demos. But I think most of the people complaining are clearly experienced and extremely knowledgeable about gaming consoles and how to assess the value of said consoles. I also doubt this game, in the long run, is going to be much of deciding factor for those folks on whether or not they buy a Switch 2. No one is required to buy the game. It isn't required to use the Switch 2. I can't entirely speak for the content of it. But I don't think anyone is going to miss out on anything by not playing the game. So its why I don't really get the hang up over Nintendo charging for it.

Re: A New Tomodachi Life Game Is Coming To Switch Next Year

UmbreonsPapa

I kid you not. As the Direct was going on, I was kind of hoping for an announcement for a Tomodachi Life Switch announcement. My daughter had Tomodachi Life on my 3DS. About a week ago, my 3DS went kaput and she was upset because she wouldn't no longer be able to play it. So I'm sure she'll be excited to hear the game is coming to the Switch.

Re: Switch 2 GameCube Controller Rumours Resurface Following New Nintendo Filing

UmbreonsPapa

@nocdaes I mean, on a base level there’s probably room for new mechanics that can go a long way in adding a whole new freshness to the gameplay. What that would be? I don’t know.

But on a surface level, there’s a crap load of Nintendo based characters that haven’t been used, that would also add a newness to the franchise. In essence, I think the best course of action for a new Smash game would be an actual new game. Not another Ultimate or remix of what’s come before. But an almost brand new roster (with some obvious mainstays) and a whole new batch of stages (with some older ones thrown in the mix).
