Re: Random: Japanese Celebs Reportedly Told "Not To Mention" Palworld To Avoid Damaging Pokémon Relations

UmbreonsPapa

@ZebZed I appreciate your detailed post. It sort of answers why Palworld isn't anything like Pokèmon. But it doesn't really answer why TPC needs to be concerned about the game. If this were, for example, Yo-kai Watch in Palworld's position, I can understand the comparison or the need to put The Pokèmon Company on notice. They're similar games.

Outside of Palworld having Pokèmon type creatures, I still don't see how it's competing in the same sphere of a type of game (outside of a few similar elements they might share). I guess that's where my confusion about the discourse about the comparison comes in and how genuine some of it really is. Again, there's a group of those who have played the game that have stated it's nothing like Pokèmon outside of aesthetics and maybe the idea of capturing creatures. But then there are those who absolutely think it's a Pokèmon killer. So I guess that's why I'm asking which is it?

Re: Talking Point: Is Knowing A Game's Ending Really That Bad?

UmbreonsPapa

For me personally, TV shows tend to be the big ones for which I don't really want spoilers or know anything ahead of time. Movies? It depends on the type of movie. But for the most part, I don't mind reading spoilers or a Wikipedia recap for a movie.

Games? Its never been a thing for me and I was ready to pick all the time. But I thought back to the first time a game's twist or ending hit hard and it was probably Wind Waker. I'm glad I knew nothing about the plot going in. Maybe Portal 2 and the Phoenix Wright Trilogy are some other significant moments.

So I guess it depends in the end and is very situational.

Re: The Pokémon Company Releases Official Statement About Palworld

UmbreonsPapa

A couple of things:

1) I personally don't have any interest in playing this game. But I am not about to hate on or get nasty with those who do.

2) It's obviously ripping off or getting very close to the edge of infringing on the designs of Pokémon. I read an interview from the CEO of Pocketpair, claiming Pokemon wasn't an inspiration. He can't think anyone believes that?

3) What is baffling is the many takes on this game and how similar it is or isn't to Pokémon, in terms of gameplay. By some accounts, the gameplay isn't all that similar and more akin to the Ark series. Yet, some other accounts are claiming GF should be on notice of how well this is doing. But why should they if the gameplay isn't similar? Which is it?

4) I also think it'll be interesting to see how this is approached with both companies being Japanese-based. Outside of whatever legal ramifications may exist, I wonder if there are any ethical or moral ramifications in terms of whether it's culturally okay to rip off a fellow countryman's product in the way this is done. And before anyone sees to jump on my use of the words ethical and moral, I don't mean them in the sense of it being a matter of life or death.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Officially Reveal New Mythical Pokémon

UmbreonsPapa

@FatBeverly I'm sad to see the Paldea saga ending as well. I think it's a region that could be much improved upon with more time and care. The companions and characters in this game have been probably some of my favorite. Right up there with Gen 7. Was really sad to see it end. Especially when both groups of friends finally meet and they introduced some great new characters in the DLC.

I also wish they went deeper with this epilogue. It swerved into some weird and bizarre places and I wanted more.

Re: 'Switch 2' Will Be An Iterative Evolution And Will Cost $400, Predicts Analyst

UmbreonsPapa

@-wc- Not aggressively saying this. But if you're going to respond to my post, at least respond to the entire post and not a snippet. I explicitly put my comment into context about it being more so a case for those with disposable income. But if it wasn't clear that I was taking those with financial constraints into account, then yes. If you don't have the disposable income to purchase a console, $300 or $400 feels like $3000/$4000.

Re: GTA 6 On 'Switch 2' Would Be "Very Tricky To Pull Off", Says Digital Foundry

UmbreonsPapa

The discussion around Nintendo consoles and whether games like GTA are viable on a Nintendo console are always interesting ones. I have always seen it as a chicken or egg situation.

Like, do these types of games not hit inherently because of the fanbase (whatever that means) of Nintendo consoles, or is it due to Nintendo consoles just not matching the others in terms of specs? So you either end up with these games either not on their at all or in stripped-down versions. Therefore, no one is going to give these versions a second thought.

And I know the thought is that mo one bought a Gamecube, so Nintendo fans and Nintendo don't care about specs. But my feeling was maybe the issue wasn't so much a powerful console being the issue. But maybe it's many of the other things Nintendo didn't do right that resulted in a Gamecube or even a Wii U not being big hits rather than Nintendo inherently doesn't or can't work in a powerful console space.

Re: Zelda Timeline Is Only Considered "To An Extent" During Development, Says TOTK Director

UmbreonsPapa

At the end of the day, timeline(s) talk is all fun and games. I suspect the majority of fans and players don’t even give it too much thought. Or if they do, it’s probably a quick giggle at an inconsistency and then moves on.

However (and I may have mentioned this here at one point), I’d be a bit dishonest if I did mention that at one point, during the great timeline debates long ago, I did dab my toes into those waters too. I wasn’t a staunch, unyielding believer in one way or another. But I did fall on the side of believing there could be one, singular timeline.

Even after all these years of not necessarily caring and accepting the split timeline theory, I would be lying if I said I don’t sometimes look at the stories of the mainline games and think it’s quite possible these stories still could have fit in one timeline. Just would have been a matter of looking at them and their stories from a different perspective or interpretation. At the end of the day, it’s more fun in Zelda’s case to theorize than get concrete answers.

Re: Soapbox: Ocarina Of Time's Water Temple Was Tough, But It Doesn't Deserve Its Reputation

UmbreonsPapa

It was challenging until you learned how to complete it. Then it just becomes annoying and one you don’t really look forward to.

To be honest, the only real issue I had was that time block in the longshot room. That’s where me and my cousin got stuck at for almost a week. To this day, I don’t know how we missed it. He eventually figured it out while I was at school and he was home, sick.

Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda Game Should Be Adapted For The Movie?

UmbreonsPapa

It will not be troubling to this Zelda fan if they tell an original story. I think it's probably the best way to go.

Considering the point made about how complex (or convoluted) the series lore has become and how everyone probably has a game they would rather see, I think there's the foundation and more to tell an original story that feels like it could be an entry in the mainline series.

Re: Reaction: What's Your Gut Feeling On The Zelda Movie News?

UmbreonsPapa

@Desrever These are probably my only concerns at the moment. I mentioned prior that I think a series would have been ideal as it could cover so much ground and give stuff room to breathe. I don't necessarily think we need to see Link hit up 8 or 9 temples/dungeons or anything of the sort and completely game-accurate. But there are specific beats to a Zelda story that I am not sure will work in a 90-minute movie (which it probably will be). At the very least, I hope they give us 2 hours

Re: Reaction: What's Your Gut Feeling On The Zelda Movie News?

UmbreonsPapa

@HaileySheridon I don't think Zelda creatures are any more scarier looking than what we saw in, for example, the LOTR series. That series was rated PG-13. Same with a movie like A Quiet Place. Those creatures are creepy-looking. That movie was rated PG-13. I don't think Zelda creatures are anywhere near bizarre-looking that an M or R rating would even factor in the mix

Re: Surprise! Nintendo Is Officially Working On A Live-Action Legend Of Zelda Movie

UmbreonsPapa

I'm excited. I know there seems to be this idea (at least here) that the Zelda franchise can't translate to a movie. I think it can. While I would have preferred a series, I can't wait to see how this develops. Will the adapt an existing story or write an original one? The casting will be interesting. No one established pops to mind for either lead role. Will they go with an unknown for Link and/or Zelda?

Re: Super Mario Party + Red & Blue Joy-Con Bundle Announced

UmbreonsPapa

@HeftyLaces I know this site (readers, not the site itself) seems to get real ornery over new hardware talk. But I'm with you. Its for sure looking like they're clearing the way for the new console.

As for this bundle, it's a bit tempting. My left Joy-Con is drifting bad. I don't have this game. But I still haven't gotten Wonder yet and that would ultimately be a priority when I don't have a huge backlog

Re: Random: Star Fox Dev Thinks Star Fox Adventures "Was Too British"

UmbreonsPapa

I feel like they (Nintendo and anyone involved in Star Fox) is making this a lot more difficult or convoluted than it needs to be. But maybe it's easy for me to say as just a gamer and someone who doesn't develop games for a living.

My opinion: I don't think you need to chase capturing the exact magic of the first game. In anything in life, you are never gonna reach that first, exact high ever.

But you can try developing something a little fresh or more refined to reach new highs for that particular experience. None of the subsequent Star Fox games are terrible. I think a long look at what all the games in the series get right and what their pitfalls are can get the series to the next evolution of what it needs to be. Again, I admit to this being easier said than done from the peanut gallery

Re: Pokémon Bank Users Encouraged To Transfer Pokémon To Pokémon Home ASAP

UmbreonsPapa

@crimsontadpoles Well, you don't lose your Pokémon if you don't pay for a premium account. You do lose access to those additional boxes. But your Pokémon remain until you re-up for however long.

Now I don't know if there is a limit on how long they'll remain in there if you don't have a premium account or don't use it. But I know I went about 4 or 5 months without premium before the DLC was released.

Edit: Let me make it clear. That's not a defense or an endorsement for using Home. Just pointing out the functionality of it. At least with my experience. Again, I don't know if there is a specific amount of time spelled out somewhere that they will store your Pokémon without any activity or without a premium subscription

Re: Pokémon Bank Users Encouraged To Transfer Pokémon To Pokémon Home ASAP

UmbreonsPapa

I'm just surprised to see people so egregious over something we knew was coming. And even with this news, we are still given enough heads up to settle whatever it is we need to.

I mean, does it suck that Bank or access to past games can't last forever? Sure. I do agree with @Dom_31 that it would be nice to have all of Gen 1--8 available in some form on the Switch. Though, I assume the idea is to have all Pokémon available across the Switch games (and GO) in some form

Re: Talking Point: What Is Your Video Game Palate Cleanser?

UmbreonsPapa

It was New Horizons at one point. But I’ve since turned the island over to my kids and really only boot up my profile to say hi to my residents.

Right now? This will probably be triggering to some folks. But it’s Pokémon. Specifically Pokémon Scarlet. I’ve completed the Pokédex. I eventually caved on the DLC. That story was fun. Right now, I’ll go to Pokémon to shiny hunt. Never was one to do so in the past. But SV has made it easier and accessible. I try not to Google what a shiny looks like just so I can be surprised when I encounter one. So yeah. Pokémon is my palate cleanser between bigger or much more serious games

Re: Poll: Do You Prefer Zelda: Wind Waker HD's Bloom Lighting Or The "Flat" OG?

UmbreonsPapa

I honestly haven’t played the original in almost 20 years. So it’s hard to make an honest comparison. So I will go with preferring Bloom Lighting. It made a game, I do remember being an awe of, absolutely more gorgeous. I agree with a post above that it was a bit much in some moments. But overall, I loved remake. Ultimately, the overall art style and how it still holds up to this day is testament to why that direction was a stroke of genius and one of Aonuma‘s biggest swings that paid off. Arguably, his biggest and riskiest. I know Breath of the Wild might have something to say about that. It’s hard to truly convey just how booming and polarizing the reveal for this game was to gamers too young or not hadn’t been born by that time.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Version 2.0.1 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

UmbreonsPapa

@NinjaNicky I think it's a bit much to imply that people are lying or lying to themselves just because they are enjoying the game despite them. I don't think anyone has denied issues exist. What they are saying is that the issues aren't game-breaking for them.

As for whether or not people feeling the need to endlessly go on about how they hate the game and won't buy it in these comments, I guess there's no rule to suggest they shouldn't. I personally wouldn't waste my energy. I get that Game Freak needs to know that they can. I don't think continuously posting how you hate the game or won't buy it is going to make any difference. I doubt Game Freak is reading the comment section on Nintendo Life. But I completely support making your voice heard with your wallet.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Getting Pokémon Scarlet And Violet's DLC?

UmbreonsPapa

I will eventually. Having gotten an Xbox Series S over the summer, it's really divided my gaming attention. So I just started Starfield. So it might be a while before I plunk down for the DLC.

Though if it's proving to be too good to wait for, I might slot it in and go through it sooner rather than later.

Re: TOTK Director Is Extremely Vague On Game's Placement In Zelda Timeline

UmbreonsPapa

I mean, the idea of Hyrule being founded multiple times isn't an out-there concept. The WW games (including Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass) pretty much lay out a destruction of one Hyrule and the founding of another. So while Tears story makes things a little convoluted, it doesn't necessarily discount or contradict others. At least not terribly.

Personally, I like the idea of a timeline. Even if it weren't Nintendo's intention to have a concrete one to begin with. It is fun to theorize, try to connect dots, and as Fujibayashi says, let fans fill in blanks on their own. I don't know why some fans get so bent out of shape over the topic, lol

Re: Random: Fan-Made 'The Legend Of Zelda' Movie Trailer Shows What Will Never Be

UmbreonsPapa

I'll die on the hill that Zelda is probably the next Nintendo's IP (or Nintendo-adjacent IP) that is most ripe for either a movie adaptation or a show. I think it has the cultural cache (behind Mario and Pokemon) and a huge amount of lore to be able to do it.

I also disagree with some who believe it needs to adapt a specific game or has to be an origin story. I think the framework for the series is set up in a way where an original story can be done and not feel out of place, seeing as every Zelda game tends to be different in those respects anyway. I also wouldn't be opposed to adapting one of the games either.

That would lead me to Nintendo and whomever they partner with choosing the best medium based on whatever type of Zelda story they want to tell. If they wanted to do one that's inspired by old school, traditional Zelda (dungeons, collectathons, etc...), I think an 8-10 episode series would be most fitting.

If they wanted to do one of the games on the shorter side of dungeons, I can see a movie working in that respect. Maybe a Majora's Mask or a Breath of the Wild would be easily adaptable to a 2-hour movie and have some room to breathe.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet DLC Brews Up Brand New Pokémon Poltchageist

UmbreonsPapa

@Ogbert @Savage_Joe One of the history classes in the game explains why those particular legendaries ended up in Paldea. They were initially treasures that were corrupted by human emotions, given to the Paldea king as gifts, and then awakened as Pokemon by the king's greed and malice.

They began to rampage across Paldea, causing destruction before being sealed in their respective caves. Hence their group name 'Treasures of Ruin'.
