Re: Talking Point: The Games We Got Rid Of - What Were We Thinking?

UmbreonsPapa

I sold my N64 and all the games to get a Gamecube back in the day. I don't necessarily regret it. And most of those games are now available on NSO. I guess in the N64 case, I miss the memories of the console more than the games and the console itself. The console was released at the beginning of my teen years. So its partly why it holds a special place in my heart

My Gamecube? I ended up giving it and some games to my now Mother-In-Law to sell at her tag sale. From what I was told, the woman who bought it came back later and thanked my MIL for selling it as it ended up bringing her son a lot of joy. While I do wish I had kept my GCN (or at least the games as you could then play them on the Wii), the fact I made some kid's day in some way lessened the sting.

These days? I am trying to hang on to games I know will probably cost a boatload later and/or I can theoretically get some replay out of for various purposes. I learned my lesson from games like Pokemon BW/BW2. I really wish I had kept them. If I know for sure I will not replay the game, I'll use it to fund a new one

Re: Talking Point: Should The Pokémon Company Stick To Just One Pokémon Presents A Year?

UmbreonsPapa

I don't see why more than one a year would be a problem. At the end of the day, this comes down to a number of factors: how TPC views Pokémon, and where you fall as a fan of the franchise in general.

I mean, if you are a Pokémon fan that consumes almost all of the merchandise or media it has to offer, then these Presents will work for you.

If you are only a fan of Pokémon mainline console games, then these Presents with no huge announcements will probably turn out disappointing. As I alluded to before, TPC has a broader scope of Pokémon as a franchise and that's obviously a disconnect for many of us who only consume the video game aspect of it. More specifically, the mainline games and certain spinoffs.

Re: Pokémon Presents Announced For 8th August 2023

UmbreonsPapa

I am the type that I think you can speculate, theorize, get hyped about something, and hope for some crazy reveals. As long as, in the end, be mature and measured with your emotions if things don't work out that way.

With that being said, I would love for a BW/BW2 remake of some sort announced. Gen 5 is the one generation I kind of played, quickly moved on from, and is the one generation I don't have represented in some form on my remaining Nintendo consoles. So it would be nice to have that set of games back.

Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie Pulled In Over 168 Million Viewers At The Box Office, Says Nintendo

UmbreonsPapa

@RetroGames If a Barbie movie really has you and your ego so bent out of shape, then that says a lot more about you than it does the movie. You tell someone not to give the movie any more energy. Yet, you were the one that felt the need to bring the movie up and deride it in order to put Mario higher up on some pedestal. I truly hope you aren't a grown man. Because your post comes off as someone with the maturity of 12-year-old

By the way, it was a really fun movie. Mario was fun too. But let's not act like it's the end all, be all of animated movies or even video game adaptations. I love Mario as much as the next person. But there's a lot of room for improvement in the next installment

Re: Poll: Have You Ordered Physical Switch Games That Came With The Cart Missing?

UmbreonsPapa

Never had this happen with games. Closest to something like this happening was when I bought my mother-in-law a Firestick. I had just gotten home a few minutes after it was delivered and had gotten the delivery notification from UPS. The package looked like a bear had gotten ahold of it and shoddily tried to tape it all back together. Sure enough, there was no Firestick inside. I assumed either the driver took it or they didn't think anything of delivering a package that had clearly been tampered with. Ultimately, I got it all settled with UPS and Best Buy and got a refund.

Re: Sakurai Can't Imagine Future Super Smash Bros. Games Without His Involvement

UmbreonsPapa

@Ryu_Niiyama Maybe the focus shouldn't be on how they can top Ulitmate. Maybe the focus should be on not retreading ground they already have and trying to move the series forward. Certainly, I don't think they need to completely reinvent the wheel where it's unrecognizable. I think some fresh perspectives coming on board would only be a good thing for the series

Re: Poll: Which Dormant Nintendo Franchise Would You Most Like To See Return?

UmbreonsPapa

I would love to see them all get their moment in the sun as I think they all have their fans clamoring for new, original titles or at least remakes/remasters.

For me personally, it would have to be Donkey Kong Country, Eternal Darkness, and Punch-Out. Love myself a good platformer. I remember being bugged out, but having so much fun with how unpredictable Eternal Darkness was. Will never forget the deleting save data hallucination. With Punch Out, I think the Joy-Cons make it a no-brainer to have a premiere boxing game on the Switch. Why not Nintendo's own franchise?

Re: Random: Get On This Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Rupee Glitch Before It's Patched

UmbreonsPapa

@WreckitRyan I have no intention of using these glitches. Only because I don't have the patience to do them. But I don't begrudge anyone who does decide to. This isn't a competitive game and what someone does with their copy of a single player game is none of my concern.

Secondly, if anyone develops some resentment from someone glitching items and rubies in a Zelda game, then that's a them problem. Not the person exploiting the glitches. I remember folks exploiting all sorts of crazy glitches and mods in Animal Crossing. Did not bother me one bit. It was their playthrough and experience. Had no affect on mine

Re: Just Dance 2024 Edition Brings The Party To Switch This October

UmbreonsPapa

@Sisilly_G That's what's been confusing about the whole announcement. Last year, they stated the 2023 addition would be the last yearly released game and it would be updated with new tracks when available. The way they're advertising this, it's like it's a whole new game. But maybe that's just for marketing purposes and you're right. Its really just glorified DLC

Re: Rumour: Universal Closing "Big Deal" With Nintendo For Zelda Illumination Movie

UmbreonsPapa

I’m with everyone that is suggesting Dreamworks. If Nintendo wants to stick with Universal for their movies, at least pick the studios for specific properties that have the best chance of hitting the right tone

@Wolf_Link Are you saying a crossover would need for a Zelda movie to have a similar tone to Mario’s? If the idea is that they’re building a cinematic universe that leads to a Smash movie, I don’t think it really matters that every movie might be different tone wise. Smash is kind of its own thing that exist outside of each character’s respective universe and I think the characters can be what they are regardless.

Re: Soapbox: Pokémon Desperately Needs A Rival, But Who's Big Enough To Take It On?

UmbreonsPapa

@GrailUK I think you touched upon something (or one of the things) that has made Pokémon stand the test of time. It’s simplicity in its core gameplay. Not counting all of the tweaks and gimmicks introduced along the way, its gameplay is still the same, simple model at its core. And it’s gameplay that anyone can pick up, not need too much handholding to learn and have some measure of success. I remember playing a Yo Kai demo years ago and it was not at all easy to grasp. I’m sure with more time, I’d probably would have figured it out. But where Pokémon’s gameplay is immediately apparent from the start, this wasn’t.

The other thing I always point out (and this may sound silly) is just having place in people’s consciousness, even when they don’t necessarily consider themselves Pokémon fans in any respect. The best example is the anime. And it isn’t so much the anime content wise. I’m referring to the original theme song. Again,it might Sou like a silly notion and shouldn’t have any bearing on the popularity of the franchise. But put that theme song in a room full of people and it’s almost a given anyone 40 and under will probably know the theme song. Will know the the theme song from the opening bars. That, to me, is a sign of a franchise that has cemented its place in pop culture history.

Edit: I also think Pokémon is helped by being almost entirely focused to and exclusive to one name: Nintendo. Say what you want about the quality of the games. At least it has that tight focus on that the games aren’t multi platform and aren’t spreading themselves all over the place. I think any rival needs to have a developer that it’s anchored to

Re: Eiji Aonuma "Interested" In Zelda Movie After Mario's $1 Billion Box Office Success

UmbreonsPapa

@aaronsullivan That’s exactly what I said to my coworker the other day. We have a general idea of what Link’s voice might sound like based on his grunts and yells from various games. I think if you work from that, a voice could be figured out

I also disagree with the sentiment that the series has no story that would allow for an adaptation. Are you kidding me? If there is any Nintendo franchise with a deep lore and great stories derived from that lore that’s ripe for an adaptation, Zelda is probably it. I do think the discussion on a movie versus show is a valid one. I think a focused, hour and a half movie could work if there’s a way to translate and condense a Zelda style adventure to a 90 minute movie. Provided we are talking animated. I do think a live action movie, in the vein of LOTR and Dark Crystal could work. A series might be able to convey and capture the essence of a typical Zelda game better in that each episode could theoretically represent a different temple/dungeon or aspect of Link’s adventure.

The real question becomes: What would the story be? Do they want to adapt one of the existing games? I think it could work. But I’ve said elsewhere, I think an original story based off the traditional structure of a Zelda game would be fun to see. They have the framework there.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Version 1.3.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

UmbreonsPapa

@WillQuan My experience?

There are obviously issues. But they hasn't been as game breaking or distracting as some of the complaints have stated. Frame rate drops? Yes. They have happened. Game crashes? Maybe one or two. But then again, I have had Animal Crossing and Just Dance crashed on quite a few occasions. So maybe it's something to do with my Switch and not the game itself.

Otherwise, the game has been more than playable and quite enjoyable. That's not to suggest that no one else hasn't had some of the reported issues. Just that for some, the issues have been minimal or not game breaking or distracting. I don't know if that answers your question.

For me, Tera Raids remain the worst experience. Sometimes, they're fine. But a good chunk of the time, it's a janky mess. It stinks because the idea of Terastillizing itself is a good one. I would normally even ignore these gimmicks. But Tera Raids are the only way to farm Herba Mystica and catch some Pokèmon you might not normally be able to catch (whether version exclusives or Pokèmon not in the Pokedex).

With that being said, I absolutely agree Game Freak and TPC don't do themselves any favor by not really being transparent and acknowledging customer complaints. Do I need to see tweet or blog post everyday? No. But some consistent acknowledgement that they're working to improve the game would go along way.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Final Pre-Launch Trailer Is Absolutely Stunning

UmbreonsPapa

@andykara2003 I honestly don't think that was on Nintendo's mind as they probably had this trailer planned out long before people were going all doom and gloom. But then again, Nintendo Life was one of only places I saw people on the ledge for no reason other than they weren't given all the information about the game. The general feeling I got, from other sites and social media, was one of excitement.

I mean, the game could very well disappoint. But I find sometimes, some get so bored with not having all the info right now, they start creating problems before knowing if there's actually problems to worry about.

With all that being said, this was a damn good trailer. I was already hyped and sold anyways. Cause it's Zelda. Even at its weakest, it's still quality. But this trailer set my hype meter through the roof

Re: Talking Point: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - What Are Your Favourite Moments?

UmbreonsPapa

Just wanted to add I thought the voice cast, as a whole, knocked it out of the park. My oldest daughter thought Keegan-Michael Key was perfect as Toad and I am inclined to agree. I would also add Anna Taylor-Joy and Jack Black to that list as well. I don't think they could have casted those voices any better. That's not to say Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as Mario and Luigi were any slouches. Having watched the movie, I can finally see why they went the direction they did with Mario (and Luigi). The little voices we have for them are iconic in a way and I think both took elements of all of those versions and made something of their own. I think they manage to have their voices sound Italian without it going overboard into caricature. Donkey Kong is kind of big doofus. So Seth Rogan was fine for that role.

Cranky Kong's voice was the only one that really fell flat to me. He sounded more like a sibling to DK than a father (in the movie's case).

I also wanted to join in the praise for Peach's characterization. It made me think about how if this is the start of a Nintendo Cinematic Universe, I would love to see her get her own movie or featured in a series.

@badmotorfinger74 That was actually one of the things I was looking forward to. What would Nintendo's version of the opening sequence look like. I thought it was really cool and yes, it did touch on some nostalgia. I wonder if it will be that way going forward for every Nintendo movie (or possibly TV show) similar to how Marvel (though they do modify it sometimes) and Star Wars does it. Or will it change depending on the franchise?

Re: Talking Point: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - What Are Your Favourite Moments?

UmbreonsPapa

We were gonna wait for my birthday in a couple of weeks to go see it. But this was the first weekend in a while the kids had no dance related obligations or birthday parties. So we decided to just go today.

Mario and video games aren't really my wife's jam (outside a game here and there of Mario Kart or Mario Party). So she didn't really have any investment in seeing it and was just kind of along for the ride. The kids and I? We loved it. It was a fun ride from start to finish. I mentioned elsewhere that I had a grin on my face the whole time from all of the references and Easter eggs. And boy did they pack 'em in. Both Mario and Nintendo in general. I do agree with criticism elsewhere to that they didn't really give a lot of it time to breathe and honestly, I could have gone with an additional 20-30 minutes for the movie. But I know it's for the kiddos and understand the length.

My favorite moment would have to be the Mario Kart sequence. It was really a great showcase in the visuals and again, packed to the gills with tons of references.

One thing that was completely bizarre and threw me off a bit was the Luma. Not so much it's inclusion (cause it is Mario related). But it's personality was completely bizarre and really a bit dark. It was funny. But I wasn't sure if I had missed something related to its personality in a Galaxy game that would explain it or it was just a narrative choice.

I can't wait to see what they do with the sequel and it's obvious a sequel is going to happen. Even though there's a lot packed in the movie in reference to the franchise, they barely scratched the surface. I know there was some hints (subtle and pretty explicit) on where a sequel might go. But there's just so much to the Mario franchise they could use, the sequel could be anything. Can't wait 😀

Re: Mario Movie's Opening Box Office Predicted To Be The Biggest Of 2023 So Far

UmbreonsPapa

@MSaturn If there is any Nintendo property that I would think would be easiest to adapt, Zelda would be one of them.

First, movies like The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Willow, and Lord of the Rings have proven there is a market for high-concept fantasy movies.

You already have the core concept of the story developed. I guess if anything might be difficult, it would be what game(s) should they adapt. I say follow the (what I assume) this movie's format in that it's not necessarily adapting a particular game. But the concept and it be an original story

Re: Mario Movie's Opening Box Office Predicted To Be The Biggest Of 2023 So Far

UmbreonsPapa

@Cashews Now we are getting into the discussion on what we are considering a bust and by what metric. Is it strictly financial? Critically? Are factoring in the pandemic issue of many of these movies not having a theatrical release like Frozen 2 was afforded?

I realize how much money these movies make is the ultimate bottom line and so yes, I don't disagree that they were bust in those areas. I haven't seen the live-action Mulan movie or Lightyear yet. But I thought Soul, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Onward were fun and pretty good movies

Re: Mario Movie's Opening Box Office Predicted To Be The Biggest Of 2023 So Far

UmbreonsPapa

@Switch_Pro I'd hardly call modern Disney a trainwreck. If we are looking at their current era starting from 2008 up until now, they had an incredible streak of some critically and commercially acclaimed movies. The only real clunkers are Strange World and Bolt and even those have their redeeming qualities. Although I guess it's worth asking what exactly are we talking about when we mention Disney. Are we strictly talking about their feature animations? Pixar movies? Marvel movies?

And it's not like there haven't been down moments in even some of Disney's most prosperous eras. Even some movies in its Renaissance era weren't on the level of Little Mermaid or Lion King.

Re: Poll: Is This The Very End Of The Road For E3?

UmbreonsPapa

I'll always have fond memories of the best moments and reveals from E3s of the past. But it's current format was not only outdated, but just ridiculously gaudy, and overstuffed for no real reason.

Looking back, I realize that I really didn't care for all the extra stuff that came with some press conferences. I don't care for celebrity endorsements. If I wanted to see a musical act, I'd got to a concert or watch music video. It was boring watching execs and developers getting on the stage and endlessly pontificating on how great the great the industry is, and how great being a gamer was. I already know.

Edit: I guess to answer the question. I don't know if this is the absolute end of E3.y feelings aside on what it became, E3 is a well known name in the industry. So I'm sure someone with bright, and modern ideas could take the even and figure out a way to bring it back successfully

Re: SEGA & Tencent Have Also Decided To Skip This Year's E3

UmbreonsPapa

Its bittersweet. But there comes a time when it's okay to say goodbye to something that's had it's time. If they are truly desperate in wanting to keep the concept of E3 alive, I think the energy and time spent trying to keep this thing alive (in it's current format) could be spent trying to find a way to make it work in today's culture.
