@Spider-Kev You're right, they did with the steam machine. It went pretty much unnoticed, unlike the steam deck.

I was thinking more of the recent rumours about a new home console. Now that they have a big success with portable console, people would probably trust them with a PS6/Xbox (random name) competitor. I'd probably go for a steam console and drop playstation.

@JohnnyMind I think you can't patent anything that is too general. Like apple tried to patent the pinch screen to zoom and were told to bugger off. But I'm not sure there are any specific limitations to what can be patented. In the end it's decided by humans with a probable hint of corruption.

So pieces made of 4 squares should be patented, but not any falling pieces. I guess a line needs to be drawn somewhere to avoid blatant copy pasted games.
