Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Donkey Konga 2

Kyloctopus

NOA at the time were really into this spray-paint urban style to counteract the claims that the company only made games for kids. It really doesn’t make sense in the context of Donkey Konga, but I do like this art and logo the most.

Re: Nintendo's Music App Is Back On Track With A New Album Update

Kyloctopus

Going through the soundtrack. Getting a draw in Hanafuda is strangely catchy.

I always thought the 51 Worldwide soundtrack was kinda weird, especially compared to the DS predecessor, which often sounded jazzy, somewhere between old-school casino and retirement home.

This one leans heavily into the lofi-synth. Its alot of songs definitely made for you to relax and decide your next move thoughtfully to.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Mario Kart World

Kyloctopus

Maybe I just need this game to absorb for a bit, but I think the game is rated too highly. We’ve gone alot of steps backwards in terms of item balance, free roam doesn’t haven enough of a hook, playing Knockout Tour Online does get tired due to the lack of routes and the standard online play is too dedicated to connecting roads together.

Re: Splatoon Raiders, A New Splatoon Spin-Off, Is Confirmed For Switch 2

Kyloctopus

I don’t get Nintendo. Last week was Splatoon’s 10th Anniversary and you think it’d be the perfect time to announce the return of a popular Splatoon 1 stage. You’d also think they’d want to drive up hype for Switch 2 games before Switch 2 launches. But here I am, neck deep into Mario Kart World, just for Splatoon 3 to pull me back in with another major update.

So wild to get a notification about a Splatoon video on Nintendo Today! My mind went “yeah, we get one every day” but then I saw the runtime and realized it was much different.

Nuts to see Freshness Ratings get upped. It was already going to take over a decade to likely work for all weapons to get 5 Stars. It’d probably take a literal lifetime to work for 10 stars.

Also, how sadistic for Nintendo to tell people that the Grand Festival stage in particular got an increased resolution, but not announce a Splatfest being held there soon. Once again, Splatoon turned 10. People are updating the game. You put effort into making this place intended to be for limited time events look good, just to not celebrate a major milestone there and only use it as an afterthought feature for amiibo?

And I still haven’t even mentioned Splatoon Raiders yet! A treasure-hunting adventure focused primarily on Deep Cut looks amazing. I have no idea how its going to play. I hope there is still a multiplayer focus and this could be the first multiplayer Splatoon campaign, but it certainly looks like its another single player campaign, possibly building from some of Side Order’s structure, without being a rogue-like. One thing is for sure, it looks really pretty.

Re: Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom And Link's Awakening Are Improved On Switch 2, But It's Not Perfect

Kyloctopus

I played all the way through Echoes of Wisdom and it felt very strange how much of the conversation was about the performance, because it was never even that bad and it certainly never hindered my gameplay. Same I’d argue for Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Anyways, would have been really neat if Echoes and Link’s Awakening both also took advantage of the new Zelda Notes feature on the Nintendo Switch app.

Echoes in particular could have probably added a Global Leaderboards feature, especially if they added more (maybe even customizable) Slumber Dojo trials and some of the Daily Bonuses to make Automatons and Smoothie making more accessible.

Re: Video: "It's Actually...Really Good" - Our Hot 'Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour' Preview Take

Kyloctopus

I have the game pre-ordered, since I’m into these more smaller and novel experiences. This is probably my lack of fiscal responsibility talking (which should probably be implied since I am getting one of these systems at launch after all), but I really don’t care about this argument of it needing to bundled due to precedent. Even if it were bundled, I don’t think alot would even care to play it. I’ve clocked thousands of hours on my 3DS and I still never cared to finish Face Raiders. Astro’s Playroom is a phenomenal pack-in on PS5 and I’m gobsmacked by how many peers I have who own a PS5 and don’t care to try the game out, even after the success of Astro Bot. The truth is that launch pack-ins aren’t the needle-movers that they used to be for purchasing a console, so its a paid release that takes advantage of the hardware.

Re: Opinion: Splatoon Brought Me Back To Online Multiplayer, But Octo Valley Shines Brightest

Kyloctopus

The campaign was really good at stretching out the basic mechanics. The bonus amiibo missions are also really good (especially the Kraken missions), I just wished they weren’t the only method for weapon variety. The DLC for Splatoon 2 however, Octo Expansion is just 10/10 for where DLC can go, building from the successes of Octo Valley and Octo Canyon; its an all-timer for single player campaigns for me

Re: Nintendo Music Celebrates 10 Years Of Splatoon, Here's Every Song Included

Kyloctopus

Let’s Go! Happy 10th anniversary to Splatoon 1. That first game felt like lightning in a bottle at the time. Bizarre, yet stylish. Goofy and fun, but also easy to get competitive over. It was doing so much that felt right and very “Nintendo” for a series that Nintendo didn’t have alot of relevant past work of theirs to reference. Going to listen to the soundtrack and go down memory lane right now.

Re: Feature: From BOTW To TOTK - How The Switch Helped Me Overcome Mental Illness And Thrive

Kyloctopus

Thanks for sharing this. Frankly, I think my relationship with games has stunted my personal life and progression with my own mental health. I don’t think it was a coincidence that my obsession with Splatoon 3 was during a phase of time where I didn’t feel confident or inspired with going back to college for my post-grad. So I do tend to look at other people’s stories of games improving their lives with a bit of skepticism. But, I do feel alot of earnestness in your Feature. I’ll bookmark your other writings for future reading.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (3rd May)

Apple has announced they’re removing Frogger and the Rumbling Ruins from Apple Arcade by the end of the month. And if its like Frogger in Toy Town, it won’t be coming back in any form afterwards. I’ll have to rush through the game’s 140+ levels to beat it before its gone now. Despite being a Frogger game though, it has more in common with Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker, with its emphasis on limited platforming, self-contained levels and environmental controls. Its was also developed by Q Games, known for the Pixeljunk games and a few Nintendo collaborations like my dearly beloved X-Scape.

Re: Poll: After One Month, How Often Are You Actually Using 'Nintendo Today'?

Kyloctopus

I go on Nintendo Today daily, feeding my long-gone void that Quibi used to fill, of daily content to look at while cooking breakfast.

The content is alot of tidbits I’ve seen elsewhere. I do like getting the Splatoon idol bits and admiring extended details their models were given. Also, they’re going through the history of Fire Emblem now, which is alot of stuff that flew right passed me.

The Calandar stuff has been pretty useful so far. I’ve set notifications on for Developer Spotlights and Splatoon 3 events, but I wish I could set my own events on the calandar.

Re: Poll: So, Did You Manage To Get A Switch 2 Pre-Order In? (North America)

Kyloctopus

I got mine ordered in-store at GameStop, alongside the camera, controller, case, Street Fighter and all of its amiibo. I waited for 4 hours in-line, second overall. Mall security dispersed the line partway through though and then bounced out, just for the line-crowd to make their own queuing system to honor the former line, using qrq.app. What a weird situation, but I assume it worked out for a good chunk of the early risers.
