Re: The Game Awards 2024 Nominees Have Been Revealed - Zelda, Mario And Metroid Nominated

Kyloctopus

I thought Helldivers would get nominated for either GOTY or Game Direction over Black Myth Wukong. I’d argue Helldivers has better direction than all of the nominees.

Very interested to see where Best Sports/Racing game goes this year. Kinda thought EA College Football would make in the nominees and even take the award, but maybe its too American focused to earn the nom, where at least NBA has global appeal.

Given the pretty small amount of game adaptations released yearly, I was wondering if the well dislikedBorderlands movie would be nominated by default. Thankfully that’s not the case. Regardless though, Arcane Season 2 really doesn’t have any competition, even though and it just squeezed through in the nominations too, which is a shame for Fallout’s case.

Erdtree deserves its Game of the Year nom. Its an entirely different game from Elden Ring. Different campaign, different mechanics, different progression, different enemies, all of which is done very well. It’d be a shame to not recognize it as one of the best games this year because of semantics and technicalities.

My guess is either Astro Bot or Metaphor win Game of the Year. Leaning more towards Astro Bot, since I don’t know how confident a panel would be to award a game that’s in the triple digits in runtime and its been released for a month and half.

Re: Expansion Packs And DLC Are Now "Eligible In All Categories" At The Game Awards

Kyloctopus

This is the right choice. These awards should celebrate the best to come from this year and shouldn’t turn its head away because its building directly off of a previous release. In the case of Erdtree, its essentially treated as an entirely new game within Elden Ring. Plenty of thought and effort went into Erdtree than what you would see in other major releases like Princess Peach Showtime. Let the cream rise to the top.

The idea of a “best expansion” nomination is tricky because frankly DLC expansions have been less popular in recent years. Its like how some years in the “Best Fighting Game” category or “Best Sports Game” category are just write-ins. I’d rather it belong to something like the Best Ongoing Game category to reward innovative ideas within an established product. The nominations get alot deeper in competition that way.

Re: Feature: "Time To Laughter Is Like Zero" - Jackbox Games CEO On Quiplash, T-Shirts, And 10 Years Of Party Packs

Kyloctopus

Fun interview. I’ve played all the Jackbox Games available on Switch, including the recent Naughty Pack and Survey Scramble. The Jackbox Survey Scramble in particular is one of my favorite games of this year and one of my favorite Jackbox Games in quite a while, as it blends aspects from Guesspionage and The Poll Mine. Looking forward to the upcoming game modes to be added as well.

Re: Feature: Sonic Boom At 10 - The Good, Bad & Ugly Of Sonic The Hedgehog’s Brief, Nintendo-Exclusive Sub-Franchise

Kyloctopus

I’d like to revisit Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric eventually, especially after having played and loved Jak and Daxter. I tried to hide myself among the reception at the time, given how disastrous E3 Demos had already shown themselves to be, but part of me felt pretty immediate jankiness and boredom. Still, something about the world seems pretty cool. If nothing else, the stories behind developing Rise of Lyric are very fascinating. Shattered Crystal was too sluggish however from the jump.

Re: As Expected, Nintendo Is Struggling To Contain Switch Online Playtest Leaks

Kyloctopus

I think its ridiculous to think Nintendo didn’t expect these leaks to occur.

Any messages of not sharing the content is just to keep any control of messaging this product. Nintendo is so tight-lipped about games until mere months they release in an effort to be the primary source of messaging what these games are about.

That being said, they should have just announced this. I think it’d be cooler to publicly give details about this project and just throw closed beta tests, but maybe the state of this game being an actual game to sell is not certain.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom?

Kyloctopus

I’m about 8-10 hours in this game and its just not gelling with me. The combat is tedious and frustrating. Puzzles aren’t interesting and its been repetitive. The world so far is kinda bland. I look at something like Breath and Tears and their worlds are challenging, fair and give you so much incentive to learn and be better from the jump. Everything in Echoes is mostly for the taking, gives you so much variety (alot of it is fluff though) but not enough to challenge your skills. This does seem like a game that can turn me around halfway through, especially as autamatons come into play, but I’m far from impressed.

Re: Indie Publisher Merge Games Closes Down After 15 Years

Kyloctopus

Merge had a good catalogue of published games. It really goes to show that the space for mid-budget indies is thinning to an alarming rate.

My favorite game published by Merge Games was Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles. It was a fun, absolutely light hearted take on open world game design with fun economies and great environments.

Re: Nintendo Announces Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom In-Store Switch Demo

Kyloctopus

Nintendo Canada really likes their store demos. It was really neat when they had their pop-up Kiosk near by house. They had set up a Super Mario Odyssey demo station, as it was getting shown off during E3 2017. That sort of local-level hype that Nintendo likes to draw in the GTA goes a long a way (although it was more prevalent when I was a teen).

Re: Soapbox: Splatoon 3's 'Grand Festival' Was The Perfect Goodbye

Kyloctopus

You don’t get to see so many live service games end on a high! Usually its with alot of silence and a notice of demolishing it off of your console. This was high effort, well understood and just incredibly fun. Its honestly amazing that Nintendo has put so much work and faith into Splatoon now to the point where it can now celebrate its history in glorious fashion, despite the series having yet reached 10 years old.

Splatoon 3 brought me back to Splatoon in a way I somewhat expected (since I was a freak for Splatoon 1 and Splatoon 2: Side Order) but not to this magnitude. I can confidently say Splatoon 3 is in the running to be my favorite game of all time. And the series itself means as much, if not more, than Zelda or Mario. Its one of those series that have rewired my brain to the point where its been special enough to commemorate it on my body with my first ever tattoo, which I’ll forever flaunt.

Re: Nintendo Announces New Switch OLED 'Super Mario Bros. Wonder' Bundle

Kyloctopus

I’d highly recommend people to go in on this bundle, if they’re choosing between this or waiting for the Switch successor. Consoles are rarely worth their price at launch, even with a good lineup and the Switch as it is has excellent games, Mario Wonder being one of the best. I’ve beaten the game to completion twice already, once with a friend and another on my own with the little online components. Both were really fun times.

Re: Splatoon 3's 'Grand Festival' Splatfest Kicks Off Tomorrow, Which Team Gets Your Vote?

Kyloctopus

Happy Grand Festival!

I’m on Team Present because I feel like this happens to be the prime moments in my life, but maybe that’s not giving the future enough credit.

It seems like Present is the overwhelmingly popular choice. I thought it’d be a bit more split, but I think it will be okay. For what its worth, Future and Present seems to have a more even split looking amongst my friends on the NSO app, but that is a smaller sample size.

Re: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp To End Online Service In November

Kyloctopus

RIP Pocket Camp. It clicked with me for only a few weeks here and there in 2018/2019. I kinda liked that the main gameplay of the game was doing favours for your neighbours. That was my favorite aspect from ACGCN that didn’t carry as much in later instalments and it’s cool seeing neighbours have tangible relationship levels.

I hope the offline versions of passing mobile games become the standard, at least for Nintendo games. Dr. Mario World and it’s fun multiplayer mode didn’t have to get wiped off the planet.
