They held back the title for a long long time to avoid spoiling things so it checks out. The final title was probably only decided a few months before they told us
I'm always surprised by how many games this series gets a year, so I'm not surprised the people in charge can't keep track of when they're being announced either.
I sure hope it's backwards compatible because my OG Switch battery is absolutely knackered. Even after I replaced it myself. Switches off without warning around 50%. Never ever had that any of my previous handhelds, but probably because I always upgraded to the remodels.
I mean, you'd hope so wouldn't you? If it follows a similar design to the Switch with the detachable controllers and handheld play, no reason why it can't play Switch games. The only reason the Switch wasn't backwards compatible was it being such a departure from disc based media. Now what would be neat is if they bolted a flip screen onto it and made it compatible with 3DS and DS games. Now THAT would be a surprise.
The whole series just needs a big shake up. The battle system is largely unchanged since the first games aside from the gimmicks they add for one game and then it's gone again. A big part of this is down to the competitive scene I reckon. You mess with the formula even a little, like letting Pokemon have a 5th move, or make it more traditional RPG where your entire party fight on the screen at once, and you mess with the strategies, parties and the Pokemon people have clung to since they first started playing 25 years ago.
If they're pulling away from the official timeline now, they can start to make more "non-Hyrule" games. Because honestly sticking within the same kingdom and all the staples it has to include feels like it stifles the creativity of the world and story somewhat. Some of the best Zelda's weren't in Hyrule.
So this is why you need a Nintendo Account to book a ticket. A few people here found it a bit odd, so hopefully they can see the thinking behind the idea now. Really cool it keeps track of your scores on your account. As always with Nintendo, it was never going to be just a regular museum of exhibits like every other one. Imagine what they would do if they had a full theme park and not just a tiny portion of Universal Studios to build attractions in.
@VoidofLight why is that weird? Classic marketing snare, you're signed up to receive emails that push product advertisements to you. Also most Nintendo fans would already be a member anyway
I can't believe that the Nintendo UK account, rather than announce the time this goes live in the UK, decide to push the fact you can catch up at 8am tomorrow. It's 11pm, it's not the middle of the night. I'm sure it'll be ready to watch again straight away on youtube anyway
@batmanbud2 sorry, disagree entirely. Past Zelda's were adequately challenging and required exploration to find secrets. That's always been the essence of Zelda from the beginning. If you found that too confusing, that's a you problem I'm afraid. Definitely not the best dungeons, they're too small (it's been a long time since I played, but I recall only one being more than two floors) but if you enjoy them, knock yourself out.
I was just thinking the other day, remember when dedicated websites for games were a thing? Instead of having to dive down a social media feed to find info. I'm glad they're still a thing.
In all honesty, they were getting worse as time went on. Although the Tokyo 1964 twist playing events in 2D was very good in the last one. They already didn't do winter games, after the first couple, I'm not surprised to hear it's come to a complete end. It feels right that a Japan based one was the last one. And it had the strange quirk of being the only version of the Tokyo Olympics that was set in 2020...
Mostly I'll miss getting to see the Olympic venues virtually before seeing them in real life. Seeing beach volleyball in front of the Eiffel Tower and filled with Toads, Piantas and Flickies would've been cool though.
Seems obvious why this is coming now and not years ago. The Switch 2 won't have the ability to attach Joy-Con, but they will be compatible to use wirelessly. So you'll need a way to charge your old controllers. The new console will most likely have magnetic attaching versions, as rumoured. This this does heavily imply the new hardware will have backwards compatibility with Switch games. Why would would they want people to keep their old controllers around?
@Greatluigi seriously missing out! Motoi Sakuraba is a legendary composer who has worked on dozens and dozens of RPGs. You might be familiar with the Mario Tennis and Golf games, but also the Tales RPG series. Plus many many more. More to the point, if you haven't played Golden Sun before and like the look of this, and like GBA RPGs then you really really do need to check those games out. Absolute masterpieces of the genre. Just so happen to be on the Switch GBA app now too, so get playing!
The inability to just give us a remaster of SA2 in the year when the 3rd movie will draw significant inspiration from it is a missed opportunity by Sega. Always here for Sonic Battle getting references in 2024 though. It's about time we got a sequel, right?
Seems extreme, yes, but the knife laws are there as a deterrent. It's a huge issue here these days. If they let this go, what's stopping an actual criminal from carrying one with intent to hurt people? Hell, maybe this guy is, who knows. These things are not sold as fidget devices, they're keychains (aliexpress, if you're interested) and as much as I think they're cool, I'd never put one on my keys for this very reason. If this dude is naive enough to walk around with it in his hand (so blatantly that CCTV spotted it) then that's on him. Keep it in your pocket if you want something to click...or get something that isn't a sharp object.
And to all those going oh the UK is so fascist, woke, totalitarian or whatever nonsense you think, you really do not know how daily life here is. It's nothing like the alarmist stories you're fed online.
Hate the obsession with white minimalist backgrounds on Nintendo boxart. Thankfully we moved away from it with most franchises but seems it's around with Mario and Luigi.
Now if only Gareth Southgate could do the same for his England starting XI every game...
But seriously, I think Pyoro already did Nintendo's job for them. Ain't no leaks coming from the web back end no more. Maybe we'll have to rely on good old printed lists of Direct content that seem to always pop up somehow...
Oh yeahhhh I have that one, why didn't you ask sooner?
Joking, of course. StreetPass was great, I'm not sure it would ever come back with the Switch or whatever is next (it's still quite a size to lug about, so wouldn't be nearly as big a thing as the 3DS one) but I'm shocked Nintendo, or another company, has never utilised the massive potential for a similar game on smartphones. Everyone has one, there's bluetooth functionality in every device. Seems an absolute no-brainer with Nintendo venturing into the mobile market.
This is the problem when they created a timeline that had to be adhered to, every version of Hyrule has to contain certain basic landmarks/areas in roughly the same parts of the map to have continuity. They've tied their own hands in this regard. This is why I'm begging for a Zelda game set outside of Hyrule again like Link's Awakening, the Oracle games, Majora's Mask. It'll allow them to be creative with the map again instead of being stifled by timeline continuity.
Doesn't need to be revolutionary. Not everything needs to be open world and have a map that takes you an hour to walk from end to end. Just needs to be more Metroid Prime on a bigger scale than was previously possible, with a few new abilities and mechanics. There will undoubtedly be some new gameplay feature that runs through the game in the same way Echoes had the light/dark worlds and Corruption had multiple worlds to jump between.
If Sylux is making a return surely it's about time they gave Metroid Prime: Hunters a modern update so players know his backstory. Maybe asking a little there. Also the environments look too good for just a regular Switch title imo I'm saying this is Switch 2, even though it has a Switch logo ident at the beginning.
I can't lie, I started to get weary of this series after the 3DS entries. Just seemed to get a bit stale and gimmicky. Hope this is a return to the good old days. It'll be strange to see the series outside of the conventional 2D sprite format.
It doesn't look "2D-HD" in the same style as we've seen previous games though. There isn't the same depth of field look that really made those games look stunning. This looks more like a HD version of the style we got on the DS remakes of IV-VI. Still looks great, but I expected the graphic style to be more like the Octopath games et al.
This is a lovely little surprise. I was hoping to see the Link's Awakening engine put to use bring the Oracle games to a new generation but more than up for this. A brand new top down Zelda title, it's been so long.
This is absolutely going to end up being a Twilight Princess/Breath of the Wild situation and launch on two consoles. Hopefully it doesn't suffer being a Switch game launched on a better console, or a Switch 2 game being launched on old hardware.
Curious as to why they didn't take the opportunity to drop another Metroid Prime port today to take advantage of the hype. Or at the very least confirm we are getting Echoes and Corruption before it launches.
I think they used to use "we" for reviews in gaming magazines back in the day. I always read it as knowing it's the opinion of the reviewer anyway, not the collective staff.
A little unfair to say this was the end of the true Paper Mario games? Not at all. Super Paper Mario is practically a platformer and none of the releases after it have ever gone fully back to the standard RPG format with a party of sidekicks that are fully controlled in battle. Hopefully people playing this for the first time can see what we've been robbed of.
Convinced it'll be a launch title for the next console. There's a reason they haven't shown it off, because it won't be on current hardware. As of right now the only other major franchise I can see them launching with is Mario Kart. It's too soon after the last Zelda, we've not long ago had a side scrolling Mario. I'm thinking they want to launch with Metroid.
