The Nintendo Direct Mini is happening right now. Yes, you read that correctly.
Nintendo really dropped this one on us!
Here are the games featured:
DARK SOULS™: REMASTERED: The first title in the genre-defining action role-playing franchise is coming to Nintendo Switch. DARK SOULS: REMASTERED includes the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, as well as improved framerate and resolution from the original DARK SOULS game for an exhilarating return to Lordran. This marks the franchise’s debut on a Nintendo platform, and now for the first time ever, this revered (and challenging) game can be played on the go. DARK SOULS: REMASTERED launches on May 25.
Mario Tennis Aces: A new Mario Tennis game is bringing a new level of skill and competition to Nintendo Switch. Mario steps onto the court in classy tennis garb for intense rallies against a variety of characters in full-blown tennis battles. New wrinkles in tennis gameplay will challenge your ability to read an opponent’s position and stroke to determine which shot will give you the advantage. And this time the game adds the first story mode since the Mario Tennis game on Game Boy Advance, offering a new flavor of tennis gameplay, with a variety of missions and boss battles. The game launches for Nintendo Switch this spring.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze: Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong return for the franchise’s debut on Nintendo Switch. This title includes all the fun and challenge of the original game, plus a new beginner-friendly mode that lets players enjoy this critically acclaimed adventure as groovy surfing simian Funky Kong. Funky Kong can double jump, hover, perform infinite rolls and even perform infinite underwater corkscrews. Thanks to his sturdy surfboard, even spikes can’t slow him down. The game launches for Nintendo Switch on May 4.
Kirby Star Allies: Kirby’s debut on Nintendo Switch is a grand new adventure packed with content. The new Artist ability lets Kirby unleash his creativity, while the new Spider ability lets him ensnare enemies in webs. Kirby also can hurl new friend hearts at enemies to win them over with love and add them to his party. Plus, up to four friends* can team up and combine Kirby’s unique abilities with ally abilities for powerful new Friend Abilities. The game launches for Nintendo Switch on March 16.
The World Ends with You: Final Remix: This 2008 Nintendo DS game has been updated for Nintendo Switch with HD visuals and a new epilogue that sheds new light on the game’s story. Players can join rhythmic battles using either Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch touch screen. The game is scheduled to launch this year.
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition: A new, ultimate version of the exhilarating action game set in the Zelda universe will include every map and mission, plus all 29 playable characters from both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game, along with all of the previous paid downloadable content. Play as Link, Zelda, Midna, Skull Kid and dozens more in action-packed battles at home or on the go. Additionally, the game includes new outfits for Link and Zelda based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game. This new version launches for Nintendo Switch in spring.
SNK HEROINES ~Tag Team Frenzy~: Play as iconic heroines from SNK’s history in a new, two-on-two tag-team fighting game. Players can activate a variety of Special Moves with the press of a button, and make use of special items to turn the tide of battle. One of the competitors will be Yuri Sakazaki from ACA NEOGEO Art of Fighting 2, which launches today in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch. SNK HEROINES ~Tag Team Frenzy~ launches on Nintendo Switch this summer.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana: When the passenger liner he was aboard sank, the adventurer Adol drifted to a deserted island inhabited by vicious creatures that have evolved in many different ways. To survive, Adol must gather fellow shipwreck survivors and build a base. High-speed battles require players to change between three types of characters at a moment’s notice. The epic RPG launches for Nintendo Switch this summer.
PAYDAY 2: As players join with friends* locally or online to execute elaborate heists, full touch-screen support makes menu navigation easier than ever, while the HD Rumble feature lets them feel everything from explosions to weapon recoil right in their hands. Debuting in the Nintendo Switch version of the game, a new playable character named Joy will be introduced. Joy is a Japanese computer whiz who wears a custom LED light mask that changes her appearance as she sees fit. PAYDAY 2 launches for Nintendo Switch on Feb. 27.
Fe: In this new type of platforming adventure, players run, climb and glide their way through a dark Nordic forest to explore its living, breathing world. Use the motion controls of the Joy-Con controllers to sing in tune with creatures and plants to unlock new abilities. Each song has a distinct sound and feel thanks to HD Rumble. The game launches digitally for Nintendo Switch on Feb. 16.
Celeste: This modern take on the pure action platformer lets Madeline climb any surface on Celeste Mountain if she has the stamina. Playing in Assist Mode lets players tweak the difficulty, from a slower pace to full-on invincibility. Unlockable B-side chapters offer even more challenging adventures. The game launches digitally for Nintendo Switch on Jan. 25.

OMG
Wow. Out of the fire
Boom!
WHAT ?!
Any Youtube Link ?!
Um...
WAT!?!
Okay... where's the saturated "mini" one at?
Wut!?
Yawn. The Tropical Freeze was a bit surprising to see. But the Dark Souls remaster was already leaked. Still, others may be dazzled.
Oh.
How do we watch?
Mini?
Didn't see that coming!
Lol, they did pull a fast one on us didn't they?!
as Nintendo's site catches fire. Seriously long load times here...
Nice Dark Souls Remastered!!!
yay
Yes!!!
Interesting way to throw stuff out there. Nothing of serious interest to me though.
Anyone looking for the mini direct link, it's here:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=20s&v=a_u7g5BlfiY
The World Ends With You <3. Love the music so much.
Free content for Odyssey is enough for me, everything else is a bonus.
A new Tennis game is always welcome. (Though I really wish they'd release Wii Sports for Switch!)
The world ends with you!? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH
New Ys game!
Boy that is really bad.
Holy heck... the Kirby release date is WAY sooner than I thought. Between that and Bayonetta, RIP wallet over the next two months.
Old ports and a tennis game.
No fair. Stuck at work and juat came to check if the direct was announced. Still what we are getting sounds great as I never bought tropical freeze ,and always hoped for a twewy remake or sequel. So got one wish granted
Cool announcements but did we need Hyrule Warriors AGAIN. I'm personally really stoked for the Mario Tennis game actually. Hopefully they can save the franchise after they ruined both franchises (Golf and Tennis) after Gamecube and GBA
Good for a mini direct. Looks like i'll be getting DS1 again for both Switch and PC. Kirby looks awesome and we already have Bayo 1/2/3. DKTF is nice because I missed that one on the Wii U.
So yeah, good for a mini direct.
World Ends With Yooooou, heck yes!!
Holy crap! Two of my all-time favorite games (World Ends With You AND Dark Souls) are coming to Switch?! *Drools! Welp, it only took less than a year, but my purchase is now officially justified! Goodbye, buyer's remorse!
Good direct for the people who missed the Wii U, but aside from Kirby and Dark Souls, it was pretty 'meh' for me. It's going to be a slow Nintendo year, which I expected.
Between Ys 8 and Mario Tennis (with a story mode!), I think I'm set.
I'm a little disappointed that the Donkey Kong Country doesn't have both Returns and Tropical Freeze in one cartridge, but that's okay.
It also looks like I'll be triple-dipping on Hyrule Warriors. Despite its jank and repetitiveness, I really do love it. (I love the Dragon Quest Heroes games a little more though, and would love to see those ported to Switch).
Tennis looks to have a full on quest mode with Boss Fights! I'm all in on it...
@ThanosReXXX See, this is what happens, I almost missed it. I hate them.
Mario rabbids kingdom battle. I love it. Looks great.
Free update on oddysse is ok.
Rest is great if you don't own a Wii u.
That was... okay!
There wasn't anything "mini" about this Direct IMO.
Dark Souls is awesome. Hyrule Warriors and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze were games I never got to enjoy on Wii U.
And yes, for the first time ever I'm looking forward to Mario Tennis. I keep hoping Wii Sports will be released at some point. Good memories, good times to be had there.
YEEEEAAAHHH!! Sorry... I just... really wanted a Switch version of Hyrule Warriors, with all the best stuff from the Wii U (Co-op, challenge, visuals), and 3DS (everything else!), and this time, my Toon Zelda and Young Link amiibo will actually unlock stuff for those characters! And Tropical Freeze on Switch? With Funky?! Heck... YES!!
I liked this new direction for Direct mini. I got to see the things I cared about, and skipped everything I had no interest in. On the other hand, what a sucker punch, not announcing it beforehand so VG journalists could prepare for it.
Pretty underwhelming mini for me personally. I know they put out good stuff but I own many of these games already. That was a very port heavy Nintendo Direct. Kirby Allies and the Tennis game interested me the most. Where the heck is Fire Emblem for Switch?
I'm guessing that we're gonna have to wait for press releases down the road. Lots of games coming to the Switch, though. No one can complain about a lack of games! If you didn't own a Wii U, lots of great games.
Cool, i'll have a watch later on. What's a "mini" direct, though? Are we expecting a full fat direct later, or...?
I’ve just had to change my pantaloons.
I didn’t think there is a game there I wouldn’t like to play.
Cool stuff! Mario Tennis with Story Mode I think was the biggest surprise to look forward to, thanks to the spoiler about Dark Souls.
What happened to Yoshi?
I'm pretty happy with that, there's a bunch of games I haven't had the chance of playing whether they are ports or not. What I've seen has definitely increased my Switch's life-span.
I'll be grabbing Kirby from what I've seen here, along with Hyrule Warriors, as I didn't have a Wii, Donkey Kong and potentially Dark Souls (I've played the original Dark Souls too much).
But overall, I'm happy, I'd consider getting everything that I seen on the video.
So Nintendo had nothing on the first party front for this year and they simply announce Mario Tennis, a bunch of DLC and Wii U remasters? This does not bode well.
And I think it’s safe to say the 3DS is all but dead at this point.
@vincentgoodwin They have been, they're just not available in the West. :/
Erm I think I’m disappointed. Want Kirby but I knew that was coming but most the rest is just old Wii u stuff. Mario tennis looks ok but if it’s based off the latest one on Wii u then hopes aren’t high either. Kinda meh
Very pleasing appetizer...
I'm pumped to get Hyrule Warriors again. So many good things announced in this mini direct, I need to step outside for some fresh air.
@rjejr Hate is a big word, my friend. I often don't see these videos live, and I don't mind either. I'll watch them when I have the time to watch them. There isn't anything to miss, since after the live broadcast, the video will still be there to watch, so I really don't see the problem or any reason for stress.
Worry about more important things. Games are just a disposable hobby, after all.
Oh, and I think Nintendo is going to get me to double dip on Hyrule Warriors, too... maybe not right away, but I really did want some of those 3DS exclusive characters and I had a lot more to get out of that game.
I wish there was some way to play co-op with two players, two switches, without buying two games though. On Wii U, two player co-op used two screens, even if it was a bit sluggish.
still getting kirby in march and i'll be fine
mario tennis looks good for the first time in a while (glad they aren't just rehashing ultra smash from wii u)
i'll let people be excited for dk tropical freeze but as a wii u owner who bought most all of the major exclusives..i hope they wind down on the wii u ports soon and focus on new games
Yep. Exactly like I thought it would turn out.
@BravelyDavid me too. I’m not a fan of old motion controls but maybe this time?
Way to flip the 3DS family the middle finger Nintendork. Not even an announcement in regards to removal of the region lock that never should've been on there to begin with or some decorative stuff for the 2DS like those cover plates that the new variations got.
Overall satisfied. Expected a lot of ports, and pretty much got that. They'll save the big stuff for E3.
I do think Darkest Dungeon deserved a call out even though it's just days away.
Some good stuff in here, loved that DK is coming to Rabbids. Dark Souls is a huge third party announcement. And Kirby has a date, and it's soon! Exciting times for sure.
Glad to buy Wii U's best game, Tropical Freeze, again.
A little warning would have been nice. O well, nice lineup. My wallet hurts already. Most interested in the Hyrule Warriors, Kirby, Mario Tennis, and Rabbits expansion. I already have Tropical Freeze. I’m not familiar with the third party offerings but will look into them.
Also, glad there wasn't anything 3DS related. Everyone, time to join the Switch hype train, choochoo!
Very good direct. Excited for DK in M+R, Mario Tennis Aces, new costumes in Odyssey, and getting Hyrule Warriors again as all the 3DS content will be brand new to me.
I am disappointed that it's just Tropical Freeze, and not Returns as I haven't played that one. Especially as the only new addition is a, what seems to be, invincible character. I'll probably pass.
Fe looks cool, did we know about that coming to Switch? And Payday 2 has part of my interest, but I'll wait for reviews and probably a sale.
And Kirby is so soon, which is great.
Overall, a very good direct. Especially if this is what's considered "mini". Does this mean we can still expect a larger one soon, within the month?
Ok, cool, but does this mean that what Retro Studios has been cooking all this time has been nothing but a Wii U port?
Honestly I’m super happy with this direct! I loved Mario Tennis on GBA so this is great, love the new update to odyssey, new character for Rabidds, Kirby, and dark souls are also great! Never got to play tropical freeze either so I’m pretty happy.
Not bad!
Wow, and that was a MINI Direct?
Cannot wait for the full one then!
Tropical Freeze, Dark Souls... both with release dates. Good enough for me. Not an 'amazing' direct but honestly people were hyping this thing up WAY too much. I'm happy.
@sleepinglion - I am always amused by when something could be an hour old leak the official announcement becomes old news and unsurprising.
This isn't really directed personally, more on the mentality you took (cause it's not uncommon).
@Timsworld Were you talking to me? Or just calling Nintendo "NIntendork"?
....Meh, who cares?
flips 3DS family the bird
You can't please everyone but there was only The World Ends With You and DK Tropical Freeze which I could get excited about.
As for BIG announcements, there was only 1, and I'm not even rate arsed about that. The rest of it was made up of DLC announcements, YS 8 and SNK Heroines. YAWN
When the hell are they going to announce VC, Video Streaming Services, a revamped eShop, and Online details?
Man I miss the live feed. Gotta make my own.
Kirby has a date, in March, hurrah. Knew they'd have a March game.
Knew they'd have a spring Wii U port, didn't think HW Deluxe, um I mean Definitive Ed.
New Mario sports game, Wii U didn't get enough fo those, and the tennis game it did get was lackluster, 1 court, pshaw
CALLED Luigi in SMO update, my kids will be so proud. Free update is free is very nice, like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
That's not DBFZ.
DK - Donkey Kong - really lookign forward to them finishing that game so I can finally get it
PayDay 2 - more 3rd party is good, everybody will be playing Bayonetta though on Feb 23
Fe is Ori in 3D. Ori was great. 3D is better. Day 1.
@JaxonH Got your wish. And May game
Switch is looking like a port machine +1 SLIG
And the big spoiled 3rd party support, should have released the ND yesterday Nitneod before it was spoiled.
That's a jam packed Mini. Now if only we had a day or 2 to prepare for it. -9000 for no warning, people have jobs you know.
So, is this enough to announce before E3? They are probably saving one or two big things for 2018 to reveal at E3, right?
Oh, I think we will get one more big direct about online as there will likely be a pretty extensive pitch on that one... and they might be able to sneak a killer online game in there — maybe Smash?
I mean, Nintendo doesn't seem hesitant to port over everything from Wii U
Loved the Direct. Will get Hyrule Warriors, Kirby, Dark Souls, DLC for Pokken, SMO DLC, Rabbids DLC, Mario Tennis & Donkey Kong. I know some will complain of ports but these are great games many missed out on (HW & DK) or games that have never been available portibly (DS). Love Mario Tennis, have a blast playing with my kids and ANY new SMO content is greatly appreciated. Thought the Direct was an 8/10.
Wow.... Mario Tennis Aces ?!
I thought DDR Ace was the only one that had Ace as subtitle.
Sigh...
Still no news about Animal Crossing for Switch and Yokai Watch 3 Sushi / Tempura for USA version...
Great Direct if you didn't own a Wii U, not so good if you did. Tropical Freeze was always going to end up on Switch as it's a major first party title that didn't get the audience it deserved on Wii U.
I wonder if the story mode for Mario Tennis had been in development for the Wii U game, but got pulled as they knew that title wouldn't shift many units? I didn't pick it up because the game seemed to be missing modes.
Overall this Direct didn't do much for me, as I'm not huge on Kirby and own all the ports on other systems bar Dark Souls.
Figured they wouldn't show any Bayonetta 3 or Metroid Prime 4 though, despite this site predicting otherwise.
@aaronsullivan They didn’t announce anything past May so I would assume there is more to announce
Ridiculous way to do this. Now I've to wait for it to end before watching it, plus bits have already been spoiled.
Omfg, Ys on Nintendo again. Falcom, you know you'll have to bring the rest of the games now. This made my day!
@Shellcore this isn’t e3 you know
@nintendork64 Well well. Didn't know that there were actually people around here calling themselves that. How hilarious.
Hyrule Warriors on Switch? Yes please.
Just watched it on my Switch. Shouted YES when Mario Tennis Aces was announced, shouted out YESSS when they revealed it has a story mode and shouted out YESSSSS when they said it launches this spring. Get in there you jammy dancer. It looks superb. The Balloon World update for Odyssey looks good fun and it's free. I never did play Hyrule Warriors so that's a definite purchase. I wasn't sure about double dipping on DKTF but then they showed Funky Kong and now it's a day one. Dark Souls Remastered is as day one as day one's can get.
I've got a feeling Nintendo hadn't planned to have a Direct quite yet and slung this together quickly when they saw all the hype building. Could be wrong but I don't think so.
Have a proper look later...... No GTA? Alot of releases here..........
@aaronsullivan "I mean, Nintendo doesn't seem hesitant to port over everything from Wii U"
Pretty much. But at least the Mario Tennis game is new.
I'm thinking all the ports and 3rd party are what made this a "Mini" and why they gave no advance notice so they didn't hype it at all. B/c, you know, that worked out so well for them.
I still think it was good, need to go rewrite my live stream but I liked the quick pace, all games, no "Headlines" distracting me and spoiling what was coming up.
Nothing absolutely earth shattering. But pretty sweet surprises nonetheless. Excited for the Odyssey DLC and I probably will double dip with Tropical Freeze. Fe looks amazing. Payday 2 looks fun. Will wait to see what its all about.
Its pretty clear we are probably going to get most of the big games ported over from the Wii U (with the exception probably of Mario 3D World as we have that are covered). I expect Mario Maker and Smash Bros to be announced next at some point before or at E3
So no full Nintendo Direct this month?
If there isn't a real direct in the near future this all will have been massively disappointing.
Yes, let's not announce the direct and let people figure out one came out....
This was a great Direct. It tells us what to expect up to E3 and it is pretty good. I will double dip for DKC TF.
Mario Tennis is looks good. Here's hoping it's packed with content.
It's been a while since I played The World Ends With You so excited to play through it again. And finally a Mario Tennis with a story mode. Aside from that, not too much to get super excited over. Was hoping for an actual Direct live stream rather than a mini one as a random upload like this but oh well.
@rjejr Now we know why the Wii U Tennis game was cut short, right? It was cut losses time at Nintendo. Star Fox and Paper Mario and others were fast-tracked to fill in the time until Switch launch. Honestly, it sucked for Wii U, but it is going to pay off for Switch. If I didn't own many of these games, it would be a stronger showing.
Also, I want to like Fe but I don't know much about it. Looks nice.
The speed run balloon thing in Mario could be a big deal and is actually kind of clever. Not sure it will take off, though. I'll never turn down free DLC, though.
Nice addition to Mario + Rabbids with Donkey Kong, actually, and fun that it could coincide with the port of DK.
A Direct full of mostly PC and Wii U games I've already played to 100% completion, with some exceptions that don't interest me at all.
Boy do I hope this is a 'mini' version, with a greater Direct still to come.
Tropical freeze is a must. But i already have it on wii u. And dissapointed (
Wow, wasn't expecting them to drop a Direct on us so quickly! I'll definitely get Tropical Freeze and the Mario + Rabbids DK DLC, and I'm pretty sure I'll double-dip on Hyrule Warriors, since it was one of my favourite games on Wii U and should hopefully release right around my birthday. Fe looks interesting, too, so I might give that a try, as well, depending on price. Overall, not bad at all!
Kirby Allies and Tropical Freeze for me. I may, MAY keep an eye one Mario Tennis. Not a bad little mini, I have to say.
@OorWullie "Just watched it on my Switch"
How? Did they just put it on there in the news section?
I don't think they just rushed it out, it was too polished and well made. Nintnedo polishes these things to perfection, nto a hiccup in the voiceover. This was probably done and ready to go a week ago, Nintneod was probably debating when to announce it, and then said screw it, just throw it up there on the 11th like we planned w/o telling anyone. Not sure I like that. Really I don't like it at all who am I kidding. I like trailers of 1 game nto to be announced, just put up, but that was a lot of info for no advanced warning, over a dozen games I think.
Oooooohhhhhh my this is ALL GREAT NEWS!!!
I’m planning on hopefully getting almost every single one of these!!
@tamantayoshi There won't be. Why do you think there would be? Nintendo made a couple of small comments and two twitter posts. Internet goes mad with expectation, but nothing huge was ever promised or even suggested.
Guess I have no excuse to keep passing over TWEWY now.
Surprised Pokken is getting new fighters, Blastoise could sell me on this DLC.
Kirby looks adorable. Loving the Spider power.
Hyrule Warriors will be a triple-dip for me. Love that game so much.
Mario Tennis Aces is the first in a long time to peek my interest thanks to story mode. Hope it's actually good.
Ys VIII, looks fine. Probably won't play that one, not a series I've tried myself.
Mario Odyssey update is... interesting. Not what I expected at all, and TBH seemed kinda pointless. Would have prefered a paid DLC with a new kingdom or two.
SNK, eh, it's a fighting game, I'm not huge into those and I already have Pokken.
DK in Mario + Rabbids looks cool. Loved the remix of the classic DK theme (I'm assuming that was Kirkhope again right).
Payday 2 I wasn't interested in on other platforms, been on Switch doesn't change that.
Fe and Celeste both look good. Not my kinda games.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is another Day One Double Dip. Adore this series so much. My only disappointment is that Returns isn't also included.
Dark Souls, we all knew was coming. It'd been hinted at for so long. I've dabbled in the Souls games once or twice, but didn't really give them a fair chance. Might be time for that.
WOW!!!!! Amazing!!! Every game shown looks fantastic...I'm going to be so broke...
I almost forgot,YS VIII looks amazing. It only arrived on PS4 in September so it's not an old port. It has 85% on Metacritic so we're in for a treat.
I'm relatively new to the concept of Nintendo Directs but this one seemed pretty good to a newbie like me. I haven't had a Nintendo Home Console since the 64 and I'm loving my switch! I feel a bit bad for people who owned the wii-u since there are so many ports but for someone like me the ports are welcome!
The World Ends With You Final Remix and Ys VIII are both day one purchases. Mario Tennis with a story mode is super exciting so I'll likely get that day one as well. SNK Heroines game looks cool but I need more details. Kirby looks super fun. Overall a great mini Direct!
For a Direct Mini that was good, but for all the hype leading up to this I guess it was a bit disappointing for many. I loved Mario Tennis on 3DS, and Aces looks similar gameplaywise and with a story mode it should be something to look forward too. The DLC for both Kingdom Battle and Odyssey looks fun and cool too. I won't buy Hyrule Warriors again and not DKC Tropical Freeze for the easier gamemode. Great games but played those enough on the Wii U. As Dark Souls most likely isn't my type of game, I'm only a bit disappointed that GTA V wasn't announced this time either... There is no lack of good games coming the next few months though!!
oh man, a lot of the announced games appeal to me, the world ends with you, kirby, I'll double dip for donkey kong for sure and darksouls! pretty happy bout this direct
For a Mini Direct it had a pretty decent amount of stuff. I likes it.
Great direct so much I'm interested in. DKC, Hyrule Warriors, Kirby, Tennis Aces all look fantastic will be getting all of them. Happy they are still brio very Wii u games. Almost pulled the trigger on a used one last week but would much rather play these in the switch. Hopefully in the future they bring over Captain Toad, Mario Maker and of course smash.
Overall thought it was great, can't wait to watch it again with my kids when they get home from school!
So between today and E3 we have Bayonetta 2, Mario Tennis, Kirby, Hyrule Warriors and Donkey Kong in terms of Nintendo IP/exclusives. Seems like a decent first half of the year.
Can't say there's much I care about here. Fe and Celeste look interesting, but they don't really look like games I care to buy all that much. Dark Souls is something I would buy on PS4 rather than Switch, and I really don't know if I even want to buy it at all. Tropical Freeze might be worth a look, although I'm not super into those games.
All in all, pretty disappointing IMO. 2018 on the Switch isn't looking super great for me so far. Guess it's gonna be a PS4 year, at least for now. Maybe that'll change as they reveal more.
Well. Some were worried for 2018. Others said wait for the Jan. Direct. If this us all Nintendo has for 2018 then Switch is in trouble.
I wish they’d at least announce plans for Xenoblade 2
@rjejr Yep it just popped up on the news feed. I had just turned off Rocket League, couldn't have timed it better. I don't like how they done this either though, strange approach.
YS VIII seems like the kind of game you would like? Got a bit of the Xenoblade look going on. It received some brilliant reviews on PS4.
That was weird
Not sure how anyone could be disappointed by this. The World Ends With You is perhaps my favourite game of all time (and definitely was before Zelda: BotW) - although I probably won't double-dip after all the hours I've already spent with it.
Never played any Soulsbourne games, so Dark Souls is intriguing. Never had a Wii U, so Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is interesting. I think Kirby All Stars looks better and better every time I see it - it's a day one purchase for me. I LOVE tennis video games, so Mario Tennis is definitely on my radar. Pokken is looking harder and harder to resist...
I'm very happy indeed. What I'm probably happiest about, though, is Ys VIII coming to Switch. I'm seriously stoked about Nihon Falcom's support. Hope this means we can get some Legend of Heroes ports in future too.
I have to say I was astounded. 90% of these games are up my alley and I will be looking to get. I didn’t see the hype for the direct, but they delivered much more than I expected.
A very good Direct imho. Mario Tennis Aces was the true star, but I'm also happy to see DKTF and Payday 2!
Also no one can complain at free DLC for Mario Oddessey.
Not sure if I'll get Hyrule Warriors a third time, but if its ever on sale maybe.
Oh and Kirby looks cool too!
This is enough to tide me over until a Nindies Direct or another mini, in April/ May!
@HerroThar good question but I bloody hope not. Couldn’t have taken them years to add Funky Kong. No one works that slow
@LUIGITORNADO This Direct only went up until May. It clearly isn't all Nintendo has planned for 2018.
Oh dear, it was a pretty disappointing Direct. Except Dark Souls (which everyone knew it was happening eventually) nothing to look forward to (maybe Tropical Freeze? Maybe)
So far Nintendo doesn’t have any really good games coming for the first half of the year... I don’t like that... There are no must haves here and that isn’t good if Nintendo wants to keep the Switch beating sales records. I hope there’s some nice surprise we don’t know about in the next couple of months.
Donkey Kong and Mario Tennis was a surprise. Everything else was DLC for games I don’t own or Ports without and interest Odyssey was cool also
@aaronsullivan I don't do speed runs, but before Mr. VO man said "speed run" I was thinking it was doable and it just kept track of your score. I'll try them all but I won't try for hi scores, just try to find all the balloons. But yeah, free is free.
Actually I just rewatched it and I'm not interested at all as it's "Community based". Meaning people are just going to leave the balloon sitting right there for no fun levels, or find exploits to put them in places we can't find. I thought it was like CT:TT and Nintneod was hiding the balloons. Interest lost.
Did see Yves 8 for the first time. I need a good JRPG as I wait for the XC2 DLC, might pick that up after I research it more.
I'm never playing another tennis video game w/o motion support. By next Christmas maybe PSVR will have some good ones. If Mario has motion w/ the Joycon - Can they do it w/o a Wii sensor bar? - I'll pick it up. But since Wii U didn't have it I'm not holding my breath. But we'll see. Story mode may suck me in, Sluggers actually had a decent story.
Is it just me, or do Kirby graphics still look like it was built for 3DS? The 3D cut scenes are nice, but it looks like a 3DS Kirby game to me. Not to say it could run on 3DS, obviously it's been improved, but it looks like it started there, not as nice looking as the wool games. We'll see, my kids will want it day 1 regardless.
Some cool stuff but the Wii U games are disappointing, I don't want to see the Switch become a remaster station.
@rjejr
All these Wii U ports are making me think the whole library is coming over. If handled right, I think this is okay, actually. Mario Maker could just add a couple things, tweak the community stuff, and it would get a whole new life for awhile, for instance.
It makes it all a little more sparse for Wii U believers, unfortunately.
Mario Tennis Aces with a single player story mode gives me (irrational, probably) hope for Mario Kart with an Adventure mode, Super Smash Bros. with a new Subspace Emissary mode, and maybe you are thinking Mario Strikers?
Either way, I remember really enjoying Mario Tennis 64 way back, and I hope this one lives up to the potential.
There's a lot coming, but personally disappointed with the Wii U rehashes (a Wii U owner here) and the lack of sports and racing games, though Rocket League, Gear.Club and Riptide have spoiled me I suppose. I was so proud of my Wii U library, which now holds a bunch of original titles, but now "inferior" versions of them .....
This Direct is anything but mini!
Hyrule Warriors, and Tropical Freeze are the two Wii-U games I didn't play. That is convenient for me haha. Guess it's time. Also, Kirby and Mario Tennis officially have my interest.
@bluedogrulez Mario Tennis Aces is a brand new sports game with a story mode to boot. Just saying.
Man that was great, I liked all the games and dark souls is fantastic as I have not played yet.
To those who say 2018 will be slow...you gotta remember this is only a small direct to warm things up, there is go8ng to be waaaaay more announced this year. Nintendo are not stupid they are going to trickle all the hype slowly to make another successful talked about year for the switch.
I for one am very happy with this small direct
I’m surprised reading the comments how many people are down on this mini. Until I realized hers are probably people that were aboard the Wii U train. I can understand the disappointment, but I haven’t had a Ninty console in a decade, not counting a DS. These are all new to me.
Based on the sales of the Wii U, lots of people missed out on these games. I do think new games are needed, but I would think any huge 1st party games are being polished and would be more of an E3 announcement for the last quarter of the year.
Kirby soon and Tropical Freeze...BOOYAH! I don't care if it's a port is on the Switch So it'll be even better. And Mario Tennis looks pretty fun. Never played Dark Souls cuz I'm not one for crushing difficulty but maybe I'll give it a shot. Hope we don't have to wait too long for a proper Direct but I'm def pleased with this "Mini". Oh yea Fe and Celeste too. Woot!
In the past all 'Nintendo Direct Mini's' were followed by a 'full' Nintendo Direct within the month (sometimes a week). Time to re-fuel the hype?
Do some truly believe this is all they have planned for 2018?
@faint Had me fooled with the sheer amount of hype being generated around here.
@toiletduck I doubt we'll see anything else until at least March. If they had anything to say for the next few months they would have said it today.
Is tennis motion controlled?
Wow, pretty much every game featured here looks interesting to me. Mario Tennis, Ys and Dark Souls (which I never got to play), mostly.
@rjejr Don't know if it will have it, but the Switch doesn't need the pointer or IR "sensor" bar to do Tennis swings that Wii Sports Tennis did. In other words, there is nothing technology-wise stopping them.
My kids love Kirby, too, so we'll probably get that. The 4-player co-op is fun. Heck, we enjoyed Kirby's Rainbow which was so weird with the multiplayer, so there's no way we are skipping this one.
But Kirby has the classic colorful, abstract graphics 2D gameplay you love, though!
@LUIGITORNADO
"If this us all Nintendo has for 2018 then Switch is in trouble."
What are you talking about? This covered stuff up to about May, there's definitely more on the way for the year. What's after May? Let me think, hmmmm — Oh right E3. That's why it was called a "Direct Mini."
Objectively looking, it wasn't very exciting with lots of ports and games we already knew about, but it had release dates which is great! The content on offer is great though, so subjectively I'm very happy.
Of course this was just a teaser for games mainly coming before summer!
@Aerona Probably it's optional!
Can't wait for the Mario dlc, lots of great surprises in there! I may consider getting hyrule warriors as it finally has all the dlc. I didn't get the world ends with you on ds and I heard that it was great, so I may get that!
@OorWullie Thanks, I'll watch it again on the TV when my kids get home tonight, they'll certainly want to see it. To see what all the games we own on Wii U look like on the Switch. OK we dont' own DKTF, rented that one. Then borrowed it from the library. Too difficult for me to keep, I missed the "play this level for me mode" from the first game.
And funny you mentioned Yves 8, I somehow missed it the first time while I was trying to type up my own live feed since we didnt' have one b/c Nintendo Logic. You're right, it really does look like something I'd be interested in, old school JRPG w/ some MH battles. Need to research it more as I knew about it but never looked into it, those anime cut scenes always turn me off, I like the 3d models. Just rewatched, really not fond of the anime, but it has base building like Skies of Arcadia, and fighting giant monsters, on an island -so no Japanese High School kids bleech. Of course if I can get it for $15 on sale on PS4 or $50 on Switch, well I'm not made of money. (It's $60 on PS4 now but Sony will put it on sale for $25 the week before it releases on Switch, they're mean that way. Oooh look demo.)
Very happy to see Dark Souls, and a day after my birthday no less. Ys VIII I'm also thrilled about as well. Fingers crossed they don't screw up Mario Tennis like they did on the Wii U.
Two games I planned to get on the PS4 I'll now get on my Switch. What's that about them not being in competition with each other...!!!
@thesilverbrick They probably do, but just not ready to announce them yet. Dark Souls remaster was enough for me.
I enjoyed it. Too bad there was no Chibi-Robo, though!
Wow, That was alright. I'm glad I didn't buy Ys 8 for my vita. Double dipping Tropical Freeze. I might play Dark Souls. I haven't really gave that series a chance.
@Hughesy Problem is, now is the time when we need announcements. In the next six months, Nintendo has confirmed release of only two brand new games, one of which we knew about over six months ago. This Direct was their chance to pull out all the stops and get us excited for this year. Instead, they just threw a bunch of DLC and Wii U remakes at us.
After such a stellar year, I wondered if Nintendo would suffer from the usually slow period at the beginning of the year. It’s seems like it has, unfortunately. 😕
The World Ends With You Remix seems to be based on the Android/iOS version. Great game, but I want a TWEWY 2 and this one will probably twice as expensive.
@Shellcore never ever ever listen to the hype no matter what console you use. 😛
@aaronsullivan "The 4-player co-op is fun."
Well some of us don't own 2 Switch. We do have a 3rd party wired Pro-ish controller (no NFC or rumble, probably no gyro either) but that should still work for Kirby. I couldn't play Rainbow Curse. My kids did in co-op, but I kept wanting to look at the TV screen, not the Gamepad. I coudlnt' get past World 2 level 2 (or that might have been DKTF). There was a level in Kirby where you had to jump up clouds which kept going down. I went down too. And I'm not saying the graphics are bad, like SFZ bad, but they dont' look as nice as say Mario Tennis Aces, which isn't exactly photorealistic either but at least looks like a Wii U game. Yoshi too. Just realized no Yoshi, so that's Sept or Oct then. And where the heck is Pikmin 4? @JaxonH did you say if no Pikmin 4 in this ND then it wasn't happening? (couple of months ago) Maybe you said this year.
That was pretty awesome! If this is a mini, I can't wait to see another full direct!
I'm alright with this Direct. I still have to beat Mario Odyssey and Skyrim. It is all Xenoblade 2"s fault. It has consumed me. Not to mention DLC for Breath of the Wild. I did want to see more though.
Dangit, I was away for just one hour! For a Direct Mini, it‘s good. Loads of content and while not much in the wake of first party announcements, I still liked most of them.
I particularly enjoyed Hyrule Warriors, DKCTF and Mario Tennis. This already looks way better than Ultra Smash. Fe looks amazing btw.
Woah Fe looks really cool!
Sees EA logo at the end
I wonder how they're gonna ruin it.
So this makes me believe even more that Mario Tennis Ultra Smash was unfinished and rushed out on WiiU, while development continued for Switch. I bought it on WiiU and it doesn't feel like a Nintendo published game... plus the game mechanics are kinda broken.
We need a Mario Golf on Switch more than tennis in my opinion... or combine the two into Mario Country Club.
Hopefully Tennis is a start of proper Mario Sports titles, with "definitive editions"... followed by Golf, Strikers, Baseball, etc.
it said the dragon quest builders demo was out now, but i'm not seeing it. can anyone else?
I'm here to show some love to Payday 2. Great fun game, specially with friends. I will probably end up triple dipping with Hyrule Warriors and double dipping with Tropical Freeze. I love those games.
And Dark Souls... My body is ready.
@faint I agree. That needs to be the subtitle of every direct related article going forward. It was getting silly.
@Ralizah
Mini Direct was about Switch only.
The Full Direct might be about 3DS and Switch.
I think people are being overly critical of what was shown and the fact that it wasn't really any stuff from nintendo. It's a mini direct for a reason. Give them some more time to prep for the big new releases.
Really pleased for dark souls and tropical freeze!
@russellohh It's up in Belgium at least.
Go the the coming soon section and scroll down.
It was nice...
But...
Blue balls...
Kirby, TWEWY, SNK Dream Match game. All have my interest, these will hold me over nicely until Bayo 3 and SMTV. Great mini.
@holygeez03
"Hopefully Tennis is a start of proper Mario Sports titles, with "definitive editions"... followed by Golf, Strikers, Baseball, etc."
And add with Mario Boxing.
A Sexy Six Pack Shirtless Mario with Red Boxing gloves.
@Al_Godoy
I'll see you on the servers for Payday 2, definitely getting that one.
Mario Tennis Aces looks awesome, shot right to the top of my list. DK Tropical Freeze is also a must-buy. Some nice surprises in here.
Well there’s 5 games in that Mini direct already. How much is the next Main Nintendo Direct gonna cost me!?
@aaronsullivan Missed this one.
"It makes it all a little more sparse for Wii U believers, unfortunately."
Yeah, well, we always new we were getting the short end of the stick. But since I'm no fanboi - despite what you may read - first year, or 2, or 3, of PS4 was almost nothing but PS3 ports. So whether Wii U Was successful or not, all of these games were still coming to Switch. You probably noticed they played up the portability aspect in every announcement. So they aren't just porting games from 1 home console to another, they are porting games from a home console to a portable hybrid. Ports are half the vidogame business nowadays anyway.
Of course it's also why I waited 3 years to buy a PS4, buying a Switch year 1 is my own fault. But at least we got Mario. Wish we got more than Mario, like Pikmin 4, the system is kind of going to waste after I spent $405 on it, we could be playing Sonic Forces and Lego Marvel 2 on PS4. And we have all those Wii U games. So I suppose in retrospect this Mini was a big bust for us personally, except for Kirby for my kids, but oh well. When they finally finish Mario + Rabbids we'll get that as well. You playing that one? I know Spoonytech and his family like it. Oh and my kid still wants ARMS. This Mini was for all the non-Wii U owners.
It was Mario Super Sluggers that had the story mode on the island. Game was practically a JRPG w/ baseball games for a battle system. I dont' remember any story in Strikers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oWh4ltmal8
I don't know if EVERY Wii U game will come to Switch, but enough that we wont' notice the ones that don't. W101 is the main one I'm looking for. Super Mario Maker I still think they'll go the "2" route like they did w/ Spaltoon 2. Not much different, but just enough to call it 2. SMM gets slopes and that's that. Maybe in the fall w/ Yoshi.
@rjejr
This year. Think the new games are being saved for e3. Pikmin 4, Retro's game, Fire Emblem, etc.
Holy crap it's DKC Tropical Freeze on Switch!!! Yeahhhhh!
And that new Mario Tennis looks slick. And The World Ends With You is, according to my brother, one of the best Square Enix RPG's ever made. He's gonna blow a gasket when he learns it's coming to Switch!
And Dark Souls, FINALLY.
@thesilverbrick It’s only a mini direct, so maybe a full one will reveal more. There’s bound to be dry periods, as they only have so many people and it takes time to make games. E3 will more than likely be when they announce big games though.
I needed this direct.
It sounds as though some people are disappointed with the Mini Direct. The blame falls squarely on our own shoulders. We hear a Direct is coming and immediately Decide it has to be about everything we want.
This was a January Direct. There was little chance we were going to see anything from Prime 4 or Pokémon. We were never going to see a big surprise first party games.
These Directs have always covered the first half of the year. Plus, we need to remember that the vast majority of people on this site have played Tropical Freeze, but the vast majority of everyone else hasn’t.
With that said, I think it is pretty clear you can say goodbye to the 3DS. You were a great system, and I will be playing you for years to come, just not anything new.
@KirbyTheVampire @LUIGITORNADO 2018
Well we know about Yoshi, though it could be delayed until 2019 or whenever. And we know about Pokemon but that could be later as well. And Fire Emblem is supposed to have a game. I do think this covers most games thru mid-summer, but Aug, Sept, Oct and Nov will have games that weren't in this mini. Pikmin 4 was nearly complete 2 1/2 years ago. As others have said, this was first 6 months of 2018, just wanted to mention so other games we know about, even if we dont' have release dates yet, surely 2 or 3 games in the fall will release. Though I'll be spending most of 2018 on my PS4, 2019 may be 50-50.
@russellohh Probably another 90 minutes until Reggie gets to work at 9AM Pacific time. They probably forgot to tell him this was going live today.
@Gamer83 Mario Tennis Aces
That's your takeaway, a tennis game? sammy would be proud.
@Anti-Matter Well, and it's clear that, while this was really strong on a third party front, they didn't drop any first-party nukes.
Still, for a "Direct Mini," this was really, really strong. Looks like third-party games will be dominating my Switch time in 2018.
@rjejr
I like the Mario Tennis games.
Ouch, my wallet! YAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
I've never played Dark Souls before so day one for me. Never got to beat Tropical Freeze or Hyrule Warriors so I'll be double dipping there. I just need all the games in this direct. All of them.
Yawn. 2018 the year where ghosts of the past appeared. These games have all been played. Is there nothing of significance that is new? Here's hoping we get a major announcement for the second half of 2018 at E3.
Celeste, ys, Mario tennis, dark souls.
I haven't had the dark souls experience yet. If only they world bring some persona ports. Nier automata... I'm thinking of getting a ps4 just for those square enix games and persona 5. I'd love to just get the switch with all that goodness in it too.
So... I may be forgetting a few but:
Kirby Star Allies
Dragon Quest Builders
Street Fighter Collection
Mega Man Legacy Collection
Mega Man Legacy Collection 2
Mega Man X Collection
Mega Man 11
Steep (maybe?)
Star Link Battle For Atlas
Yoshi
Bayonetta
Bayonetta 2
Project Octopath Traveller
Payday 2
Mario Tennis Aces
Wolfenstein 2
The World Ends With You: Final Remix
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze: Oh My Gosh I NEED THIS Edition
Hyrule Warriors
Dark Souls Remastered
Y's VIII Lacrimosa of Dana
SNK Heroine
Fe
Fire Emblem
BlazBlue cross Tag Battle
Valkyria Chronicles 4
Hollow Knight (may be an indie, but this one comes with Ori & the Blind Forest levels of hype)
Wargroove (may be an indie, but this one comes with Advance Wars levels of hype)
Pokemon
Metroid Prime 4
No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again
Dragon Quest XI
Shin Megami Tensei V
Bayonetta 3
And we haven't even gotten to E3 2018 yet... Things are looking pretty good for Switch right now. All these games being portable in HD are so exciting. The World Ends With You? That's like, one of my brother's favorite games of all time. As is Dark Souls.
I'm happy. In 5 months we'll be getting e3 announcements. This is more than enough to fill out the first half of 2018. And I imagine even more is on the way (cough, cough... Dragonball Fighter Z)
I was initially disappointed by the content of this direct, but a few points came to mind:
1: It was a "Mini" direct
2: It would have been a surprise if it wasn't leaked and pre-hyped, so the extra hype is on the shoulders of those on the hype train
3: Where Wii U ports are concerned, I think there are a lot of consumers who didn't buy a Wii U and now own a Switch, so it's smart for them to cover their bases. In terms of games like Dark Souls and ports from other systems, that's also smart – a lot of people who have bought a Switch seem, from sales demographics and anecdotal evidence on my part, to be people who may not have invested in any other system recently, so these are fresh new experience for them on their Switch (I'm one of those people).
All in all, not a bad showing, and I expect another more exciting Direct or just a steady news drip over the next few months.
Also, point 4: If it wasn't in this Mini Direct, WHAT DID THAT CHIBI ROBO JPEG ON TWITTER MEAN?!??!?
How is TWEWY going to work without two screens? That was integral to the experience.
And now that DKCTF is on Switch, XCX is now my only reason to turn on my Wii U.
@Yorumi
I agree to a certain extent, but you need to see the other side too. Since the Wii U failed, many people missed out on it. I have Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors, but have no inclination to buy them again. The only way I would was if I got a good deal on my copies and got the ones for Switch for a few bucks.
It's for the people who missed out, so you're not the target audience there. I hear you about supporting Nintendo when things were rough, but every new console goes through a phase of ports from last gen.
@JaxonH Holy crap it's DKC Tropical Freeze on Switch!!! Yeahhhhh!
Yeah your day was made. Too bad you didn't also get a port of Returns, seemed like a natural for a 2-pack bundle, but maybe they are saving the Wii games for VC.
I have no concept of that "World" game, have been looking into YS 8, but if your brother gave it high marks I'll look into it. No offense. No way, can't do it, too much too read, rhythm, urban setting. bleech Have to add it to the list of great games I've missed out on b/c I'm a graphics nerd.
And you know I'm not playing Dark Blood Souls anything.
So, nearly 200 comments and nobody has commented on the first screen in the Mini being "You got the mail, right?" That's such a big burn from Ntinedo after all the hype and then they drop this on us w/o warning. King Troll Nintendo.
Soo many games.
Happy from what I’ve seen tweet, will have to watch it after work
Looks a lot different than what all those leaks and rumours predticted
I seriously need to find some free time, my backlog is reaching steam proportions! Dark Souls is the highlight for me, though Tropical freeze is welcome as I have never played that. Fe looks intriguing as well. Anything for Rabbids is welcome as I love that game. If you add in Bayonetta 1 and 2, there is enough to keep me going to E3
Would have been nice to hear something on the online service, but overall not a bad showing..
@thesilverbrick I think it's safe to say that Retro was working on the port of DKCTropicalFreeze and that's why they weren't working on Metroid Prime 4. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that someone else has a chance to give us their take on Samus, and I also think Retro's DK games are the best in the series but it's kind of underwhelming to think that a studio of their talent is spending their time on a port. Again, I'm just assuming. Maybe there's an announcement that Retro are working on the new Wave Race or something. We can dream.....
Mario tennis and dark souls are the only things that interest me here. I wish they'd make a Mario baseball game here.
@Yorumi
I gotcha, yeah I agree with you there. Sorry, wasn't sure where your disappointment was exactly.
When the Switch was originally announced, I was disappointed there was no incentive for Wii U owners, be it a free game, eshop credit, etc. That was, and still is disappointing even now.
Skimmed the Japanese direct hoping some more games might be hiding out over there. Only difference appears to be Stardew Valley. I'm actually more diasapointed to see no Amiibo or 3DS announcements, but not really surprised.
Excited for Celeste, and will definitely grab Dark Souls Remastered on the Switch. I've replayed that game to death on the pc, but on the go? That'll be a breath of fresh air.
Other than that, this better not be all we get this spring. I need a full-fat Direct with a metric TON of Fire Emblem Switch info and video clips.
@Yorumi If it makes you feel any better, which it probably won't, the first 2 or 3 years of PS4 most Sony fans were complaining that the only thing on the PS4 was ports of PS3 games. Maybe even ports of PS2 remasters on the PS3. I'm a bigger Sony fan than Nintnedo fan and I didn't even buy a PS4 until year 4 b/c I had so many games already on my PS3, which I own 2 of, living room and bedroom.
So yeah, as a Wii U owner myself this Mini was mostly looking past us, but here's the thing I believe to be true, even if the Wii U HAD been successful and lasted 5 years, not 4, Switch would still be getting ports of all these games and Nintendo would be playing up the "Definitive Ed." and portability aspects. So much of the gaming industry these days is ports and remasters, it's easy money for them.
So yeah, not much for us in here, but that's the way the industry works, first year or 2 is remasters so companies can make some money that they then put into new games. At least we got SMO, Mario + Rabbids and ARMS last year. And Splatoon 2 was somewhat new. Kirby looks like it could be fun, so there's that at least. MS just put out a $500 X1X, I'll take the Switch port line-up over the X1 line-up this year.
Nintendo Direct Mini out of the way, now waiting for the Nintendo Direct Maxi with new games not rereleases!
@Saego - People said that about Switch when MK8D hit. But it reflexively expressed a different response.
I suspected many Wii U games to be ported to not only keep the eye on the Switch, but offers a chance to recoup losses simply due to the Wii U not having the market.
@Bentheblaze2390 just a GC virtual console release of Mario Superstar Baseball will do for me, that game is amazing!
for being just the first announcement of the year, it was pretty cool, considering it was a Mini.
PRetty sure theyre will be many more to come in 2018.
I wonder what they will do for the Switch 1st year anniversary in March
@The_Mysteron I doubt porting Tropical Freeze to Switch has been keeping Retro busy since 2013. They clearly have been working on something else massive. Hopefully we see whatever it is at E3.
@MsgBoardGamer You forgot Pokken Tournament. Nintendo published that.
All the hype that's been generated over the past few weeks for this?! Wasn't expecting much to be honest I'm hoping they come out all guns blazing at E3
@Proust
Why on earth would you sell your Switch when it's not even a year old yet??
Where is the Double Dragon you promised me???
@thesilverbrick yeah i was sorta thinking that but then i also think that this direct probably wasn't meant to be such a big event in the first place, it was the fans that blew this thing way out of proportion, which actually was quite funny. I'm guessing we will see more content in the coming months.
I've expected DK Tropical freeze since the switch launched tbh. It's one of those games that was great , but never reached the audience it should have so this is a sensible re release.
Dark souls will be cool, Kirby is way sooner than I expected. E3 is going to kick off!
So if this was a mini Nintendo direct....does that mean there's another "main" direct coming this month?
Interesting direct though. I never picked up the world ends with you so I might try it sometime.
Lol, this is Retro's mystery title...just a Tropical freeze port!
No Yoshi is pretty dissapointing. Maybe only Kirby for me this spring, potentially Mario Tennis?
Pretty disappointing in my opinion. DKC would have gotten me excited but I played it to death on Wii U. Not much of a Kirby or Mario Tennis fan and Dark Souls or Hyrule Warriors are not my thing. Fe is about the only thing shown I’m looking forward to. Hopefully post-May is better than these offerings.
Also disappointing they didn’t speak about VC or the paid online service for Switch.
So it finally landed and what a double edge sword it was. If you never had a Wii U DKTF is great. Hyrule Warriors port wasn’t needed as Fire Emblem Warriors is still fairly new. The World Ends with You was a nice surprise but again a port of an old game. Ys again a nice surprise but a bit niche, Mario Tennis could be good but why Mario Football would have been more exciting. Payday 2 again another port we’ve known about for a while.
Dark Souls not sure what to make of this never played it wouldn’t mind trying but will now doubt be £50 when I could try it for a fiver on another console. Kirby and Fe are what they are and we’ve known of them for abit. As for DLC it’s all good, if the price is ok on the Pokemon Waves.
What happened to Donkey Kong's voice? Oh well, I'm sure I'll get used to it.
They are filling the library up with Wii u ports, wich is awful!
Its funny though: People expected a avalanche of first-party games on Switch since the 3DS is almost dead. Well I don't see it happening just yet, that's for sure!
As I said earlier double edge sword what would you change no new games just replace some ports. I would replace DKTF with Mario Maker (cash in on the Mario hype) and also replace Dark Souls with the Modern Warefare Collection. I’m not a fan of CoD but to really shift consoles at least here in the UK a good FPS is needed to attract the youth.
@MsgBoardGamer "the Switch hasn't become a platform for Wii U ports"
No, the Switch hasn't, but if you look at the content of the Mini ND, is there anything new besides Kirby? OK Mario Tennis. And some DLC for Pokken DX, which kind of defeats the whole DX title, and annoys those of us who own the game on Wii U.
The Mini was kind of port heavy, even if several were 3rd party ports, which the Switch does need, not a lot of completely new material in there though.
It's funny, I was fine watching it, thought it was a great Mini really, non-stop game trailers, no fillers, a few surprises, but when it was over and I had time to reflect on it, as a Wii U owner I was less impressed. MAkes me wonder if that's why they dropped it on us w/o warning, if we had time to prepare and sit down w/ come coffee adn popcorn ready to watch it we would have been less impressed, it was the surprise and speed of the reveals that was most impressive, moreso than the actual content. Non-Wii U Switch owners are in for a treat, HW was great, plenty of people love DKTF, more SMO and M+R content, and new Kirby. It's a lot. But it's more if you didn't have a Wii U.
@Proust
Drought? Well to each their own, but you and I didn't watch the same thing then. Perhaps just games you're not interested in, but your own personal drought, does not count as a real drought. Still, it's always amazing to see people jump ship so early.
@The_Mysteron
No, Tropical Freeze only took them 3 years to develop, and it's been 4 years since release. No way it took them longer to port the game than it did to develop it in the first place.
Even if Retro did the port, they're definitely working on something else. Something they've been teasing as "delicious" on twitter. That said, I seriously doubt they did the port. Ports are usually contracted out to other developers.
Well that's like a balloon deflating!
More old rubbish let's be honest look at the eshop. Damn how did they get so much junk in that shop?.
Remastered old junk yawn. Nothing very good at all. I personally felt that mini direct was rushed together embarrassing poop.
@aaronsullivan: Okay, to be more specific, baseball, football and hockey have no presence on the Switch save for the universally panned RBI Baseball. And I'm turning blue from holding my breath for Steep . . . .
Looks to be either 1 big or 2 medium titles releasing every month up to May, bar January (which personally, I'm fine to take as a back-log month). I think that's a pretty good result! Fully expect a Nindies Showcase to come in February, to pad it out even more, and a few more 3rd Party announces (Wolfenstein 2 is due a Q1 date for a start) through Q1.
Only concern my side is Yoshi not being there. Is it being held back to fill out a quiet second half of the year...? Fully expect E3 to have some big announcements, but some will inevitably be 2019.
For a Mini Direct it was solid. The first party lineup through May is pretty port heavy though.
On a side note, with Tropical Freeze coming I sincerely hope we don't get 2D Mario until 2019. Three 2D platformers is plenty!
@ThanosReXXX The best part about the ND's though is usually the banter in the live feed on NL. Everybody hooting and hollering and making comments about Shrek. I still don't understand the Shrek thing but it's funny anyway. So I was really looking forward to watching simultaneously w/ everybody and reading and posting comments. So yeah, they took that away from me by not giving us a 24 or 48 hour heads up. So yeah, hate.
To follow on your earlier Christmas tweet. Imagine walking down stairs on December 23 and all your presents are under the tree unwrapped and your parents are at work. And there's a note that says - "Here ya go kiddo, enjoy, now you don't have to wait any more or be bothered with unwrapping. We'll see ya after work, mom & dad". I enjoy unwrapping all my presents Christmas morning w/ all of my family there, it's fun, almost as much fun as having the presents.
And to all the people who open their presents Christmas Eve night, pppsssshhhhh
So yeah, having presents is good, but I was looking forward to unwrapping them w/ everyone at the same time, after they gave us a time, which they never did.
So 2 trends I see that are happening with the Switch and will continue to happen going forward. First, as I predicted EVERY 1st party Wii U game is either in the process or will eventually be ported to the Switch. Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors being the latest examples. I'll bet Super Mario Maker and or Star Fox Zero are not to far behind. Secondly, more support from 3rd parties - even if it's ports of older games or remasters of games that were never on Nintendo platforms before. So no Call of Duty WWII, AC Origins or Star Wars BF II - so no currently-hot multiplatform games but after the Wii U's abysmal 3rd party software lineup I'll take it!
No words of Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter XX for west, Pikmin 4, Bayonetta 3, Metroid?! Only DLCs and 10 years old games. I’m disappointed! This direct was bs. Well at least my wallet will be happy for some time. Already have Bayonetta on Wii U, same with Donkey Kong, played Dark Souls on PC... if they don’t reveal other games in real Nintendo Direct, I’m good till fall 2018. Maybe The world ends wit you but that’s one big maybe. All the hype for nothing
@1UP_MARIO I do own a Wii U and didn’t get round to playing Dark Souls on it so I’m more than pleased. 🤔
Wow... all that waiting, and what we get is a bunch of ports of Wii U and older games. No Online Service discussion, no VC, no Metroid info.
The highlight for me was the Mario+Rabbids DLC update. Did they say when it comes out?
@rjejr Yeah, I can understand the sentiment, like I already told you before, but hate? I don't hate on inanimate things, it makes little sense. (and more importantly: it's a precious waste of my energy, that I would rather invest into something more useful and positive)
And the whole Shrek thing must have past me by completely, since I literally have no idea what you're talking about.
@BravelyDavid Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U ran like crap. So a port with better frame rate is welcomed. Plus it has all the content from both Wii U and 3DS as well as all the DLC included.
@MoonKnight7 of course it does- if someone doesn’t like the games it’s obviously a games drought for EVERYONE.
@Proust who is this garanty you speak of🤔
@darthstuey
Haha, absolutely true.
Some people are missing these points:
1- It's a mini direct, which means that big announcements are saved for later (Maybe at E3).
2- Nintendo so far ported only the best of the Wii U games to the Switch. Last year we got Pokken Tournament, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (though it also counts as a new game since it's released the same day as the Wii U version). This year we'll be getting Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze so far.
3- Nintendo wants to make sure that there's no software drought during the year. This plan worked very well last year, so they're doing the same.
4- Bonus: You get Switch exclusive features when playing these games.
Look, I don't have a Wii u anymore, and even if I did I would still get some Wii u ports for the switch. People keep forgetting that switch also play on the go as well as home. That's a big advantage for the Wii u ports. Hyrule warriors, dk tropical freeze updates on pokken tournament and smo are great as well.
@ekwcll Yup all that's missing for ports in my eyes is Super Mario Maker and New Super Mario Bros U maybe Smash Bros but would prefer to wait for a new game designed for the Switch
@ThanosReXXX Well my hate probably isn't as strong as your hate, what with you being a mad titan at all.
Hate is more near the bottom of my scale - dislike, hate, ahbor, detest, loathe - where it sounds like it's closer to the top of yours. Hate isn't that big of a deal for me, it's just hate. It isn't the direct opposite of love as in love-hate, it's more of a strong dislike. When I loathe or detest something, then I'm done.
this pretty much sucks for an update if you have a Wii U, tho I do like the idea of an easier mode for DK.
Tennis- it looks like this is probably what they wanted the Wii U version to be like, but the just threw out the other version as a rush job/cash grab. Granted, I have enjoyed tennis more than I thought I would, but this should have been a $30 title, not $50.
Kirby is about the only thing I will certainly get.
Call me a dreamer but I think the use of the mini on the title is to say stay tuned for next week. Day one for DK (non Wii U owner here), thrilled for SMO dlc (bring some bigger paid dlc please please), maybe on DK dlc, pretty sure will end buying Us and maybe Fe ( will probably be too expensive coming from EA... Not bad so far. Now go get my GTA v on the go Nintendo!
@Paraka MK8D was a nice filler alongside Breath of the Wild. I think it's good all/most Wii U games are being ported to the Switch, it gives the Switch an even better line up.
I didn't realize Matt was making a full version of Celeste, and on Switch no less! Very cool. I hope Towerfall is still coming, as well.
Looking forward to Balloon World, too. I don't feel like tracking down all the stars, but I'd come back to the game for this if you can search for friends' balloons.
WHATTTTTTTT
Overall good stuff, but now I have to wait even longer to hear anything about Pikmin...
Pretty good, albeit port-heavy, mini-Direct.
I’m looking forward to trying out The World Ends With You, and hope that Kirby and Mario Tennis turns out well. And the update to Super Mario Odyssey actually sounds really good.
Already own Hyrule Warriors and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, though. (And Dragon Quest Builders.)
...But what about Chibi-Robo?
@darthstuey I'm happy for u
That wasn't bad actually. Least I got release dates for Kirby and Fe. So that's cool.
@rjejr Ah, okay. Thanks for clearing that up, grumpy cat...
And I know it isn't as heavy for some people, especially considering how ingrained it is in our language, so it's very easily used for the littlest of things, but indeed, hate for me is like having thoughts about inflicting some serious damage upon something or someone, or moving into the territory of wishing something really terrible happening to them, and that's just not for me.
My avatar might make people think otherwise, but that simply stems from early 1980's me thinking that he was an incredibly cool character, and fantasizing about having all that power. Wasn't really too bothered about all the bad things he did back then...
And basically, I've used the name ever since: first on arcade cabinets, and later when the internet was finally available to us, I also used it whenever I made an online profile. Although once there, I found out that I definitely wasn't the only one liking the name...
Which is also why I initially called myself "TheRealThanos", because I wasn't about to call myself Thanos31792, just because a whole truckload of numb nuts had also decided that the name Thanos was cool, more than 20 years after I had adopted it as my own nickname/callsign...
My current name is just an evolution of that: "TheReal" got under my skin too much, for it being a little silly, and being a constant reminder of not being able to use the actual name, so now I just chose to change that into "ThanosReXXX", which basically means King of all the Thanos'es, with a healthy taste for adult entertainment...
this was the dark souls of nintendo directs
@canucksfan989 Yep, I fully agree with that list. I wouldn't be surprised if they added Super Mario 3D World and, with an update to the infuriating gyroscope controls, Star Fox Zero too.
I will buy most of these. The majority of release dates are pretty soon which is great news.
I would say the direct was safe but I have no problem with that and it just means the next direct, possibly in March , will be even more exciting.
More great times coming!
With Donkey Kong Country TF and Hyrule Warriors DE coming to Switch, I'm fairly confident that Super Smash Bros Wii U/3DS and Mario Maker Wii U/3DS will be ported to Switch, with the Switch version containing content from both the Wii U and 3DS versions of both games.
Overall, if this is the quality of Nintendo Direct Minis from now onward, I'm pretty excited to see what Nintendo has to offer during their normal Nintendo Directs and their E3 Spotlight.
Well, Fire Emblem info jossed - right after I dared express confidence. Jinxing is magic! XD Kinda surprised they didn't finalize Octopath release date (and a final name if this one is still supposed to be a working title?) yet either.
Dark Souls confirmed and firmly on my radar (cheers for the plans to bring all three games, that's how I love ports most), but woah... TWEWY??? Adapted to single screen gameplay, too? And with new content? Oh frabjous day. I loved what I played of it on DS, but I managed to drift away and get distracted while I was figuring out the routine of grinding pins via... what was its Streetpass equivalent called back then, again? Now it'll be time to finally own it legally and dive headlong. This, DS and Hyrule Warriors (I considered it on 3DS sometime down the road, but this one will have all the DLC out the gate and co-op, so eeyup) make the short but neat Direct for me. Very interested in Fe as well, but we've known about it for a while now. Oh, and good for Payday finally getting a release date - makes me hope that next time so will Steep. XD
PS. Are there any transfer bonuses to consider in DQB demo? Otherwise, I was in no hurry to get it even on Vita since I have no hesitation about eventually buying that game anyway. DQB and Terraria are the only terrain-crafter games I'm really interested in so far.
Fe looks amazing, and so does Celeste.
Celeste is the same devs as towerfall ascension, which didn't trailer well but felt amazing and aced reviews everywhere as a multiplayer single-screen platformer. I'd put towerfall above super mario bros vs. as the best single-screen arcade game of its kind of all time, so having Celeste as a surprise release in two weeks was pretty epic for me.
First party might be a bit lackluster, though I applaud the return to a story for Tennis, and will definitely grab Tropical Freeze as I skipped the Wii-U.
Looool to Mario tennis... what a waste of time! Gimmicky controls as it was in 2006. Same ooooold gameplay of the n64 (which wasn’t bad but c’mon it’s almost 20 years of the same) and still we have no gyroaiming in Doom for the switch. Tropical freeze? Hyrule’s warriors? Tsk... Nintendo heavy trolling but it’s no more fun.
@thesilverbrick There is no way that March, on the anniversary for the Switch launch, they aren't announcing a bunch of stuff. This is just a stop gap. Also, there was no way this spring wasn't going to be a little slower on big new Nintendo IP front.Don't worry! Definitely will be surprises this year. And as far as momentum goes, all the non-Switch (tech dept) owners at my job are all now suddenly taking the console seriously and are like "Darksouls tipped me over, I'm going to buy one when it comes out."
@Proust
"So tell me, what are you looking forward to buy this January till May?"
Fe, Payday 2, Kirby and Dark Souls. That's more than plenty for me.
Hang on, this is a 'mini' direct and they announced
A new first-party game
2 new first-party Wii U ports
A third-party DS remaster
A third-party PS360 remaster
A third-party current-gen port
A sort-of new third-party game (the SNK fighting game)
DLC for 3 games
A few release dates for previously announced games
And that isn't enough for a Mini Direct?
Well, the Dark Souls reveal would have been neat had we not been pretty much spoiled on the 'rumour' - I'll be getting that at some point.
Mario Tennis Aces is promising, but I demand motion controls.
TWEWY is a 'No' as I have the DS classic. As someone else said, make a new game if you want my money.
Hyrule Warriors I will wait a few years for and pick it up at the end of the Switch cycle when it's cheap. I want the full version, but I still have the Wii U version to play through.
DKCTF - no, I have the Wii U version.
Fe is the only other one immediately on my radar, but Ys VIII is a possible, especially if others from the series are planned.
Overall, this had better be a mini with something else in the schedule before E3. A run of 2 more minis, or one biggy.
@gcunit as I said it seems to me the same gameplay of the older ones... so if there are motion controls they are going to be only a gimmick (do the motion instead of pushing a button).
@AzmoBaro I'm not expecting 1:1 simulation in a Mario game, but I want the gimmick.
@gcunit me neither but at least they could “upgrade” the gameplay. it’s not out yet but from what I saw in the direct it’s not very promising...
@ThanosReXXX I lkie ThanosReXXX, but then again I'm all about the NSWF stuff.
I really should have this as my avatar, clear up any confusion.
@MsgBoardGamer I'm patient. I'm just easily annoyed when things don't go my way. Though mostly I'm just always annoyed.
I think my rating of the Mini ND in the new thread is fairly accurate. Though afterwards I realized I completely left out Mario Tennis, so it could have been a little more accurate. Mario Tennis was never going to sway me, but if there's motion controls w/ the Joycon to go along w/ the story mode I'll give it some serious consideration.
Omg, Ys!!! Haven't played it since I & II, so it looks like gameplay has changed, though it's still an Action RPG. Looking forward to that one, hope it doesn't disappoint.
SNK Heroines... DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball the fighting game?
PayDay 2 I noticed a date in GameFly for the other day, so I'm excited about that one.
Fe looks promising, looking to see more and Celeste isn't too shabby, so same goes for that.
I've heard good things about Dark Souls, so that's going on my radar now.
Wow....NoA really wasn't kidding with watching the world burn, were they? All that hype and they throw the direct surprised and unannounced. True to form Nintendo has turned finding Nintendo marketing into its own minigame. And it's about as free to play as any mobile game.
@rjejr.....so....are you conscious again yet? Are you taking deep breaths? It actually happened.... I lose the internet though....I said next week.
Lineup looks good. TKC:TF: Now On A Console Someone Actually Bought Edition is a surprise, though a predictable one. No Smash....that's a hilarious non-happennig. Dark Souls is excellent and has been off and on the rumor mill a lot. YS is amazing. World Ends with You is a pretty cool surprise. Kirby dated. Some other fluffery, nothing market shattering, but some very nichey stuff that looks amazing. Pretty solid direct at least for me as an RPG nerd IMO!
@rjejr Good movie, except for the part where he ultimately lost his life, so perhaps not the best Clint Eastwood avatar...
This seemed quite underwhelming. The excessive hype and Nintendo Twitter trolling set my expectations way too high, and I didn't care for the shorter "mini" format.
@electrolite77 I agree with you. Also wouldn't lose any sleep over it: for some people, nothing is ever enough or there will always be something left to complain, sadly enough.
If there really existed such a thing as time travel, perhaps some (or a lot of) people should be transported back to a period, of say, right after a great world war, to experience for themselves how happy you can be with only a little luxury.
Might make them a bit more thankful of what they actually ARE getting, instead of the general Internet's population incessant focus on complaining about what they're not getting...
@crimsontadpoles No offense, but that's all on yourself and all the other people believing in that hype, not Nintendo's fault, nor was it the fault of any of the websites reporting on it.
None of it was ever confirmed or officially released by Nintendo themselves, other than that Chibi-Robo tweet, which was actually a quite funny and smart answer to all that baseless hype.
At some point, people were expecting no less than 18 titles to be revealed, amongst which big IP's such as Metroid Prime 4 and what not. Completely ridiculous and based on literally nothing other than wishful thinking with no basis in reality whatsoever.
And then the actual Direct comes, which (when objectively judged) was simply solid, logical and literally packed with announcements, especially for such a short event, but oh, surprise of surprises... guess what?
People are disappointed, angry, underwhelmed and whatever other negative emotion or response they can think of. What they actually should be mad at or disappointed in, is themselves, for believing in unconfirmed internet hype...
@ThanosReXXX Nintendo helped to fuel the fires of the internet hype. Usually I set my expectations low so that I'm not disappointed, but I figured that I'd be optimistic for a change since Nintendo was hyping it up.
@crimsontadpoles And how exactly were they doing that? By not responding? The Chibi-Robo tweet was the only thing coming straight from them, and some comments here and there about it going to be another good year for the Switch, but other than that, no hype whatsoever for this Direct.
Nothing I’m interested in, so I’m planning to get another console for my open-world needs. It’s still early in the year, but most likely my next Nintendo game purchased will be in 2019.
Unless you just joined gaming everyone should know to keep their expectations low at all times in regards to Nintendo. Sometimes you’ll get a surprise, but mostly it’s just general news.
Tropical Freeze!!! That's my birthday sorted. 🎉
Dark Souls can take a long walk off a short pier. 😁
@NEStalgia "Now On A Console Someone Actually Bought Edition"
Last I checked Wii U has still outsold Switch. 😛
Good summary. And I'm fine. 😆
@ThanosReXXX I've owned the movie on DVD since it came out on DVD but I never did watch it. I figure I'm already living it, why do I have to watch it?
Well, that was a Direct for the pooper. Kirby is probably only game I'll buy, plus Rabbids dlc. No surprises, or at least good ones. Oops wait, no mention of virtual counsel was suprising. Mario Tennis & Tropical Freeze will be $60 each won't they? Pass. I'd rather buy $120 worth of nindies on the eshop.
Not trying to be a downer, there will be great games released this year. Nintendo killed it in 2017. Just...a downer of a Direct.
Yay, solid release date for Celeste! And pretty soon too!
I probably won't get it, but Tropical Freeze should ideally be $30 or under (based on it's Nintendo Select status, and not much content being added to it)
I think it's a solid start. Indie's are heavy on the Switch train, so that will definitely help inbetween Nintendo's releases
@Proust
No problem, because I do not have those problems like you of have limitations for the games that will come, besides that I still have a backlog between 3DS, Wii U and PS3 games, and I still do not have all the switch games I want that are out now (and will come, and not yet announced, and buy a PS4 and vita), so do not worry about me.
ah, and try to troll better the next time, Even though I probably have you on the ignored list next time. ^.^
@rjejr Never watched it? Aw, man, sorry for the spoiler, then. It's a great movie, though. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone asking me if it's worth watching. Might even be the ticket for you to relieve some of that post-Direct stress...
If anything, it'll give your mind something else to digest than gaming, even if only for a couple of hours.
I thought the Direct was excellent, everyone wants more games but for me personally I came away being more than satisfied, with Dark Souls and Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition being the standouts for me. If this was a mini I can only imagine what a full one will be like.
@JaxonH Cool list, I'd add Blade Strangers and Bloodstained to it.
@Dpishere
Me too and +1 to your comment;
yes, there were few games shown in the direct, but, well, it's January and it's starting the year; There are still many months in the year and possibly more nintendo directs will appear and there will be more surprises, in addition, the E3 and other events where Nintendo may show more surprises, so just wait and enjoy the current games.
For me, Mario Tennis, SNK Heroines and Kirby are my options, plus, still some games that I want add to my library: Bomberman, Puyo Puyo, Shantae, Gear.Club, Mario Odyssey; well, let's have fun! ^.^
@ThanosReXXX Why did they create this hype with the Chibi-Robo tweet instead of just post a tweet about 'a mini direct is coming tomorrow' or something. This big hype has led to many many many disappointments. Why creating a hype for something mini? Nintendo did know that the Chibi-Robo tweet would create a hype, a hype for almost nothing. Or do they have some plans for a full direct very soon?
@Proust
It is one thing to "share" your ideas and opinions and others that we should all be according to what you say; Then, if you are disappointed, why do you insist that I (and others) should feel disappointed: "My condolences to those who do not know what to play the next few months and use their Switch as a dust collector."
It's like saying: "What mistake do you make to sell your Switch, it's a shame in you"; And obviously, I am saying something silly, because it's your switch, "it's your decision, not mine", do you understand the point?
It's your business, not ours that you do not have more options to play, and well, I can not tell you anything about that, it's your idea, and is respeted; but do not tell me that I do not have something to play, just for you, right?
Good Presentation, though the first one of the year that they'd do like only 2 or 3 times a year nowadays was only 15 minutes. They didn't even announce Mario & Sonic at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, and the games themselves are next month. Sure it would not have released before the game's themself take place, but it wouldn't been nice if they announced it beforehand.
@Snadertjuh Nobody knows what their plans are, and the Chibi Robo tweet wasn't to create hype, it was to stem the flow of hype.
It was a metaphor for pulling the plug on the rumors, not a metaphor for adding fuel to the fire.
So, Nintendo did NOT create hype, it was all the people and their unfounded speculations. What we actually COULD accuse Nintendo of, and which some might find equally annoying, is that they never do anything or respond in a manner that makes things clear.
Normally, companies would outright deny or confirm something, but Nintendo mostly just shrugs its shoulders and moves on. It didn't even seem fazed by their Direct being leaked, although I can't imagine that being the case.
Anyway, all I wanted to say earlier is that I don't get the disappointment. There were a number of good announcements, it was a small Direct, and it's only January, so all the whining about there going to be no more titles released in 2018, let alone being announced, is completely uncalled for, since we've still got almost a whole year to go, and whatever else is true, one thing is certain:
There WILL be another Direct some time in the near future...
@Banjos_Backpack "local multiplayer game or a friends only online component."
I was explaining it to my son - he missed the ND b/c he was in school - and he really wanted to play it offline with his brother and friends like hide and seek, just 1 on 1. We also discussed the possibility that like Super Mario Maker Nintnedo would hide a few balloons in each level w/ a timer to show us how it's done. That would likely be the best way to get leaderboards, for all of 15 minutes until the YT videos went up showing where they all were.
Just realized this would be a great way for Ntineod to bring back asynchronous or asymmetrical gameplay. Not that they should, didn't do Wii U any favors. But 1 person could hide the balloon in handheld mode, then dock it, and hand the Joycon to the seeker. Or really preferably the seeker could have a 2nd set of Joycon or Pro. This would also work in tabletop or handheld mode, one person hides the balloon then hands the switch to the Seeker. That actually works better than docking on the TV, but the TV would work better for more people to watch in a party setting.
Now I'm going to be disappointed if this is online community based only. Though surely since they brought in Luigi they'll let him hide a few balloons for his brother - meaning us - to find. I'm really not spending any time looking for or hiding any balloons for random people online, I'm just not that into it.
Guess we'll see. Now that Nintneod has had a Mini ND maybe they'll actually follow up and promote all of the stuff they showed us yesterday and not go quiet for another month. They kind of dropped Zelda BotW Champion Ballad DLC on us out of the blue as well and I wasn't happy about that either. I've just never been able to appreciate their take on marketing. Silence silence boom. Silence silence boom. I'm more of a slow drip build up big hype guy.
@ThanosReXXX Morning/afternoon Thanos. Why the #@#$% are you guys still talking about that Chibi tweet? We have games to talk about now.
OK that reads way more menacing than I intended, it was a joke, I like Chibi on fire, this one's my favorite.
@ThanosReXXX No worries about the spoiler, it's a years old movie, it's my own fault for not knowing. Plus he plays an old guy, movie only had 2 possible endings, he dies meekly or he dies heroically, and thankfully you didn't spoil that.
@rjejr 4 years later and a year of fire sales don't count This thing's not even a year old and is barely under WiiU.
At this point in WiiU's life cycle we were....what finally getting Injustice and Lego City? And nobody cared because FE: Awakening.
@ThanosReXXX I'm not counting on "near future" I think the mini direct gets them through Winter with enough to say "Switch has games monthly." I think March/April will be the next direct. They usually have something around Easter to highlight the summer travel season in advance of E3. I'm half wondering if this E3 will be one of those "show games from years in advance" blockbuster E3s that sound great until the following year.
@NEStalgia Don't go getting all mad on me now just b/c I pointed out you were wrong. We'll see what happens 2 years into the Switch's life when Kimishima starts talking about his new hardware the NZ smartphone and all their main AAA games are going to be ported to PS5 and X1X2.
I swear they could not have screwed up Wii U any more if it had only existed in a sequel to "The Producers". "Springtime for Switch"
@rjejr LOL. I still have a feeling they knew WiiU was doomed the day they launched it and proceeded to just operate as though it didn't exist after that. By the time Iwata said "NX", rumors had already been flying that a WiiU replacement was coming THAT YEAR. The industry already ASSUMED they were killing WiiU by the end of year 1. "NX" just said "Yes, yes we are." Even though he really only said "NX" so the press didn't run with "see they're moving to mobile, console is dead!' When they REALLY broke it was Reggies "transition" address at 3.....2 years before NX was really announced as Switch. A clear statement that WiiU is dead even if there's nothing to replace it.
Poor thing. It had good games. Of course they're all on Switch now.
@NEStalgia "Poor thing. It had good games. Of course they're all on Switch now."
Well not SSB4 yet, give it a few more months. And maybe not XCX b/c Switch already got XC2, and W101 seems to have been forgotten entirely. But mostly everything else or sequels, Pikmin 4, SMM2. No SFZ or AC:aF, only the games that weren't insulting to the fanbase. But I don't blame them, it's the smart thing to do, and it's nice to see them do something smart occasionally, like seeing a blue moon or a rainbow.
Post apocalypse video game historians in a 1,000 years researching Wii U and Switch (you'll figure it out)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKlIWBsudU4
@rjejr "Why the #@#$% are you guys still talking about that Chibi tweet?"
Because people still #@#$% keep bringing it, or Nintendo supposedly adding to the hype, up...
And go watch that movie, I dare you.
But seriously: it's a great movie, well-developed story, and even touching at times. Watch it with the missus, or alone, if she doesn't like that type of movie...
@NEStalgia In my line of work, anything happening in the next quarter is considered to be "near future"...
@rjejr SSB4, XCX, and TMS#FE are the only amazing games that haven't been ported yet. XCX will be. SSB4 probably will be when online happens. Maybe XCX will be retooled as an MMO with service included with subscription to sell the online. Would be cool actually. It could work. SF0 will be buried and forgotten. W101 already was buried and forgotten. Cool concept but too experimental for its own good. SMM I'm not convinced can or should work as-is. And that's kind of the whole library right there.
@ThanosReXXX "But seriously: it's a great movie, well-developed story, and even touching at times. Watch it with the missus, or alone, if she doesn't like that type of movie..."
Having missed the original discussion, and combining it with your name, this out of context paragraph develops a very different context.
"near future" in the industry, and "near future" to the masses seem unrelated. rjejr was close to a full breakdown with the 1.5 week wait into January for his Direct
@NEStalgia Comment #277 might clear up any confusion...
@ThanosReXXX I'll cut my losses down the middle and assume we're talking about DoA: Beach Party The Movie.
@NEStalgia No can do, man. Wanna make smart Alec remarks about my conversation with @rjejr, then you need to be in the know:
He posted a picture of Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino in comment #277, and that is what I was talking about, not about the movie "Three Rumor-filled Billboards on the way to Nintendo's Head Office"...
@NEStalgia I'm always close to a full breakdown, makes being me so interesting.
This is probably my most accurate avatar.
@rjejr Finding oneself interesting: the beginning of the end...
Really like the look of Mario Tennis and Luigi's Balloon mode.
For those who are disappointed with the Nintendo Direct Mini, Spawn Wave has good news and want us to be patient cause this may lead to a bigger better Nintendo Direct coming soon. Perhaps in 20 days or less, we may get the full blown Nintendo Direct that we always wanted. If that is true then the full Nintendo Direct may eventually happen by January 31st 2018 or sooner.
@JaxonH Delicious, eh? My guess is Cooking Mama HD Remaster...
@retro_player_22
Even if we don't get a Direct until March or April, we still have 7 brand new Nintendo exclusives in the pipeline right now, and that's before even mentioning any ports. That's more than we had announced last year
Mario Tennis Aces
Yoshi
Kirby Star Allies
Bayonetta 3
Pokémon
Fire Emblem
Metroid Prime 4
+
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Bayonetta
Bayonetta 2
Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition
Last year we had:
Zelda
ARMS
Splatoon 2
Mario Rabbids
FE Warriors
Mario Odyssey
Xenoblade 2
+
Mario Kart 8
Pokken Tournament
So we've already got as many new games in the pipeline, that we already know about the second week into the year, as we got the entire year of 2017. And we've already got 2 more ports as well. And we haven't even gotten to the spring direct, E3 or the fall announcements yet. And we definitely have way more third-party support in the pipeline than we did last year. Many of which are exclusive (The World Ends With You, Octopath Traveller, SMTV, No More Heroes, etc).
So either way, I'm good.
@ThanosReXXX Pretty soon I'll be staring in Dos Equis commercials. 😆
I consider referring to myself in 3rd person as the beginning of the end. I always take a break when I feel that urge coming on.
@rjejr Man, you really have to stop involving Americana in your comments. I literally have no idea what that means, other than it looking a hell of a whole lot like Spanish or some other Latin-American language for "two horses".
You have to keep in mind that I haven't set foot in the States for well over 38 years...
By the way: I see the Donald has been quite busy saying dumb stuff again, calling countries bad names and all that. When the hell are they gonna impeach the b...... ?
@ThanosReXXX No Dos Equis man over there? Surely you've seen the memes?
You started me down that path replying to my "interesting" comment. You can't use the word "interesting" anywhere w/ anybody in the US w/o referring to "the most interesting man alive".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Most_Interesting_Man_in_the_World
http://time.com/money/4252403/success-most-interesting-man-in-the-world-ad/
Almost on topic. (I literally have no idea what thread this is)
@Paraka Good point! For the diehard fans we get the rumors early.
Having heavily invested in the Wii U, it's hard to get excited about some of these ports.
@sleepinglion - Every port announced so far I own the Wii U version of. But no DLC for essentially all of them.
I am fundamentally against ports, but financially it is the easiest way to recoup losses without royally screwing your consumer. It is essentially an option to entirely purchase or repurchase.
However, if Tropical Freeze can be used to fund Retro's new project even slightly, I can accept this.
Mario Tennis looks interesting to me. Was waiting for a good Tennis game on the Switch. Console seems to be perfect for this.
Can't wait for the Direct max.
@rjejr Nope, we don't have it, that's an America exclusive, or at least not a European one. Do vaguely remember that meme, though. But that could very well be because you've used it before somewhere during the almost 5,5 years that I've been hanging around here.
@ThanosReXXX So what your saying is Mexican beer isn't a big seller over there? Guess I should have figured that out. I took a tour of some Heineken pseudo factory building in downtown somewhere, Amsterdam maybe. I have a photo of me in front of it but I'll spare you.
@rjejr Ah, yes. The Heineken factory tour for clueless tourists...
(which is indeed just outside of the city center)
But all kidding aside: there's more than likely some shops in Amsterdam that sell the stuff, such as one establishment that's called "The Beer King", which supposedly has an assortment of 1001 kinds of beer (and if you want, you can taste them all for free), so they'll probably also have Dos Equis, but it's not found in any standard liquor store or 24/7.
@ThanosReXXX Clueless tourist? Man now I gotta go find that photo, I'll show you clueless tourist. 😆 I know it can't be any worse than that cheese cabin, that's gotta be like one of the worst pictures of me of all time, you should feel honored. No wait, the Tai Chi pic was much worse. 😛
The factory I went to in '92 was downtown, not outside the city, blocks from the Anne Frank house maybe. In '92 Anne Frank house was a 2nd story window overlooking a canal in a row of buildings. I didn't actually go up b/c no beer up there. We spent a day at Dachua (concentration camp in Germany, you know I'm probably spelling it wrong) that was enough depression for me.
@rjejr What you visited, is called "The Heineken Experience" and this is were you went:
And yes, it isn't OUTSIDE the city, but it is in one of the outer rings. Perhaps you might remember from your visit that Amsterdam is surrounded by canals and consists of "city rings" going outward, and the Heineken factory is in the second ring. If you can't remember that, or if you weren't given this info, then you probably had a lousy tourist guide...
P.S.
I'm telling you about the Beer King and its 1001 kinds of beer and you pick out the clueless tourist part? THAT's where you're focusing on? Man, and I just gave you 1001 valid reasons to come visit this great city once again...
@ThanosReXXX Oh man, you have no idea how lousy our trip was. I paid like $2,000, a lot back then, and it was run by absolute morons. Like Nintendo is a bastion of brilliant marketing in comparison morons. I'll stop there, I must have told you already.
Heineken Experience sounds about right. I don't recognize that side view at all but the street in front of it looks familiar, I remember the row of storefronts. Sorry, I thought you meant outside the city like in a field somewhere.
Found the photo, me and 4 girls I barely remember, all holding gift bags from the Van Gough museum which must also be nearby. I can read Heineken Browery in neon above the door. In hindsite its possible we never went in. I bought a poster of a sailboat from the museum b/c it said Vincent in big red letters. The photo of my sister in the window of Anne Frank's place was also there, and the Grand Hotel Krasna with a big open area in front, think we met the bus there to go back to the hotel in the middle of nowhere. No. Where.
If I come back to Amsterdam it's not for the beer. Red light district maybe, missed that before. Is "The Bulldog" still a big tourist trap cafe? I stole a coaster. 😛
@rjejr No offense taken on the whereabouts confusion.
As for the Heineken Experience: I was looking for a more close up picture, which shows a front with glass doors which give a clear few on a set of copper brewing kettles, don't know if that also rings a bell.
And yup, The Bulldog's still here.
Overall, you've still got a decent memory on you. The van Gogh museum is indeed relatively close to Heineken. The hotel you're talking about is probably the Krasnapolsky. It's across from the monument on Dam Square.
@ThanosReXXX Not only is it there, but that round bulldog logo in the corner is EXACTLY the pic on my coaster from 92, that was 25 years ago and they haven't changed their logo 1 iota.
I could only see the Krana on the front of the hotel b/c there was a giant white cylinder in front of it with what looks like Jesus and a couple of guys trying to hold him up.
That's not the hotel we stayed at though, Would have made too much sense. We were like a 30 minute bus ride outside of the city center, no matter how many rings you went out, it was a ride past green grass and tulips and windmills to a resort type place on the water. Not canal water, like real boats in a marina on a harbor.
I don't have a hard time remembering stuff from 25 years ago, I can give you every horrible detail, it's the last 5 years or so that are a blank. Amnesia, dementia, senility, call it what you will but my short term memory is I'd say 25% functional, used to be 98%. I was never photographic memory, but I could remember almost everything. Now, not so much.
@rjejr Haha, and here I was, trying very hard not to describe that "giant white cylinder" as something that wouldn't pass the mod filter here... (also because for the life of me, I couldn't think of anything NOT X-rated at that moment)
As for where you actually stayed: honestly, not a clue. There's tonnes of places just outside the city that are surrounded by green meadows and water.
I do have to say that this here little chat about absolutely nothing is a very welcome break from the other one that I was stupid enough to step into. Our friend NEStalgia opened a topic about whether or not he should get an Xbox One X or a gaming PC, and I decided to add my two cents, but obviously only directed at him.
Next thing you know, I find myself in several useless discussions, disputing what I've said by individuals for who my message wasn't even intended...
And when something like that happens, it's somewhat hard for me to ignore the attacks. Well, attacks might be a bit over-exaggerated, but I certainly don't like being questioned, especially not when I post a message that (besides largely being my own opinion/views) is factual, and above all: was meant well, which is subsequently used against me. Luckily, they've seemed to move on to other topics than my "mistakes" now...
So, yeah, thanks. Always nice to have some variety and balance, some good to counter the bad, so to speak. Especially on a Blue Monday.
@ThanosReXXX You fighting w/ NES or the other guys? I know you guys have a go at it every now and then, as we do, but it always seems good natured as it is with us. Though it isn't hard to imagine what a convo between the Master PC race and X1 fanbois might be like. NAACP and KKK booking a rally in the same state park. Not a park I want to be camping in.
I don't recall anything NSFW about that statue, but I suppose if I lived there I'd have more time to ponder it, I just recall trying to figure out which of the 3 dozen tourist buses was mine and not wanting to miss it for the ride to Germany.
Wiki description of the statue was kinda boring, I thought it was Christ, just some WWII stuff. Oh well, apparently I did hit the big "it" spot for tourists in Amsterdam anyway.
Yeah I have no idea where our hotel was. No Google maps back then. I have a shoebox - literally the box from my hippie Birkenstock sandals I bought for the trip - full of pics and loose change and stolen memorabilia, but I'm not even sure I took notes. Probably assumed my photograghic memory would just recall everything. And it does recall a lot, mostly b/c so much of it was bad, but not that hotel. I do recall the East Berlin hotel. Yeah, it was '92, few years after the wall came down, and we were in freakin' East Berlin in a hotel that I'm pretty sure used to be prison. Had I been to anyplace even remotely that bad in the US I would just leave. East Berlin. Morons.
Well I've enjoyed the trip down memory lane as well, thanks for fillin' in me on the current scene over there. Now I gotta get back to bar mitzvah stuff. Ever see a movie called "Keep Up w/ the Steins'? you'd probably hate it, but I'm living it now.
2 minute trailer to fill ya in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUotYU43AWY
@rjejr No, not fighting with NES. Most of what I say to him is all in jest, I have never been angry at or really annoyed by him, indeed much the same as with you.
As for the NSFW description of the monument/giant white cylinder, take a look at it:
Now, with that picture in mind, think lady toy, could either be the one with, or without batteries...
That movie does ring a bell, it must have been shown on the TV here once, since we have quite a lot of movie channels. Although this is a small country, it is much the same as the States, in that respect. Since a good number of years, we even have all the themed/dedicated channels, with 24 hour broadcasts of single topics. (cooking, lifestyle, comedy, sports (one channel per sport), music, religion and so on)
Oh, and I didn't hate it. Would I go see it? Probably not, but if it was on TV, and I had nothing else to do, then I might have given it a watch. I can enjoy a cheesy comedy every now and then, regardless of whether or not the topic resonates with me.
@ThanosReXXX Today's topic for off topic conversation.
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/09/consumer-electronics-show-las-vegas-club-showcases-robot-strippers.html?recirc=taboolainternal
Needless to say not the robots my kid is building for his HS robotics team.
Actually the robot they are building is probably the most on topic I've been in days. (vid is about halfway down the page)
https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc/game-and-season
@rjejr Stripper bots, huh? Well, to be honest: after the makers of the Real Doll started to add mechanical hands and mouths to their Adult Entertainment Dolls, nothing surprises me anymore.
I still think the Japanese will come up with the first fully functional love bot. They're kinky like that...
That stuff in the video looks like fun. Almost makes me wish I was young and in school again. Almost...
But I love tech, and back then, we only had the most basic of computer classes, and only in the last few years of my school life. Stuff has gone fast since then, especially with the advent of the internet. Electronic white boards, tablets instead of notebooks, and so on...
That video is actually more on topic than anything we've discussed so far, seeing as it keeps mentioning putting stuff on the Switch and Switches being owned...
@ThanosReXXX The people in Japan are so in love with their phones they don't have time for sex bots. Though a VR headset and vibrating pair of underwear will be perfected in Japan. (They've already got the VR part down fairly well if you look at PSVR in Japan, just need the added vibration. It will come. ugh, can't believe I went there)
@rjejr Haha, sorry man. Although: you did start it with those pole-dancing robots...
Oh, well, one last thought on it then, and we'll move on, you pick the subject. Seeing you mention PSVR in Japan, made me think of a much earlier attempt at adult fun on Playstation: the PS2 game Rez had a special add-on for a gamer's lady friend, that would keep her just as interested in watching/experiencing the game (if not more) as the one playing it...
@ThanosReXXX Funny, I can't recall ever seeing that device in Target. Those crazy Japanese gamers. And they beat me to my own joke by 16 years. It's still going though, article from 2016. They really need to bring it back to pair it up with PSVR.
https://www.theverge.com/2016/9/25/13046770/rez-trance-vibrator-ps2
@rjejr I see massive problems with that, especially with girl gamers still living with their parents. Just imagine them playing the VR version of this, with the add on, and one of their parents unexpectedly entering their room to tell them dinner's ready, or something like that...
You'll never be able to look at each other in the same way ever again, and that would be one awkward dinner...
By the way: did you read the entire story? Sure sounds like she got completely lost in it...
@ThanosReXXX "did you read the entire story?"
Never ever. There was a link to some girl gamer who tried it out, I considered reading it, but didn't.
Games are rated M for a reason, if you let your underage kid play one, well who's fault is that?
@rjejr You should read it, trust me, it's entertaining, and it is a hell of a lot less text than some of my comments...
(and for clarity's sake: I mean my link, not yours)
And who said anything about underage? Someone could still be living with their parents during or after college, all depends on how life goes. I wasn't that quick to leave the nest either.
And Rez isn't rated adult, so anyone can buy it. The peripheral to go with it is another story, but then again: you'd have to import it, since it's Japan only...
@ThanosReXXX "you'd have to import it, since it's Japan only.."
All the best stuff is.
Oh, and yeah, I had read that article yesterday, I got there from my own link on google, not yours, so I was a bit confused as usual.
https://www.engadget.com/2006/07/26/rezs-trance-vibrator-not-sexual/
So even if Nintneod does announce this tonight, we'll know it isn't new.
@rjejr So, you ultimately ended up on Gamer Girl Advance, or not? The link you posted now also isn't the one I posted. I am a staunch believer in (and defender of) original sources, not through links or pages mentioning pages where the links to other pages can be found...
The link I gave you in comment #347 is the ONLY direct link to the actual article, but if you ultimately read that one, then at least you got the message I wanted to share with you. Would hate to be the only one of us who knows what the deal with that crazy chick was...
And sharing the fun is always better.
@ThanosReXXX Yes, I read the Gamer Girl Aavance article. But I didn't click on the link you gave that went directly to it, I found the link on the Endgadget page yesterday, which made answering your question difficult, b/c you asked if I had clicked on the link and read the article. But the answer to that was both no and yes, yes I had read the article but no I hadn't clicked on your link. Which is a confusing answer, yes and no or no and yes. So I gave you a link to the article which I linked from showing you that I did indeed read it even though I never clicked on the link you provided. Easy.
@rjejr Man, pffff....
That immediately brings to mind why the heck you would make it so difficult for yourself. (which on a side note even makes me think that it also causes you unnecessary stress, which is hardly conducive to good health)
WHY on Earth would you Google something if I already gave you a DIRECT link? That's both puzzling and unnecessary to me.
Next time, just click and go, easy-peasy. And of course also to humor me. I haven't done all that work for nothing, making that word a clickable link and all...
One grumpy old man on this site is already more than enough, don't you think?
@ThanosReXXX "One grumpy old man on this site is already more than enough, don't you think"
Yeah, and that's me, b/c I'm older than you, unless you somehow got older than 52 the last few years.
And I Googled the Rez vibrator to see if it was a real thing and not some home made gadget or April Fool's Day joke. Also if it was available in the US, you never mentioned it was only available in the Japan, just that it was available there.
And you, Google and this site doesn't add to my stress, the bar mitzvah has that covered. About a year ago we paid $1,000 to the temple to cover the fee, including the kiddush. (Kiddush is basically Yiddush for a light lunch). It's point #3 in the handbook "This fee includes a minimal kiddush for the Congregation". Now they are telling me I owe them $450 for the Kiddush. That I already paid for a year ago. $450 for bagels and butter for 25 people. ugh
Just made haircut appointments, 1 son today at 4:15, me tomorrow at 1:00, other son Friday at 3:30. Busy busy busy, living at the hair salon. Hopefully we're home today by 5 for the live stream of whatever it is.
@rjejr "Googled the Rez vibrator to see if it was a real thing"
Adding not being trusted to give truthful information to a long time discussion partner to the list of offenses possibly causing the tipping point into "grumpy old man" territory...
@ThanosReXXX Oh come on, dont' tell me the first time you saw it you didn't wonder if it was real or not? It's a vibratory you plug into the PS2, how CAN that be real? So wrong.
@rjejr Well, at least I read the actual article straight away...
But all joking aside: a friend sent me that link, because he was a Rez addict, and he was also an import gamer, so his go to game shop back in the day told him about it.
Some time after, we had a big falling out, and I never saw him again, so to this day, I still don't know whether or not he actually bought the thing...
