@Potimarron Is that really the reason? The Mega Drive/Genesis wasn't that popular in the US until Christmas 1991, after the Super NES was already released. Also, it's not like purple and pastel purple are super-adult, manly design choices. It's also slightly more angular, but not really tank-like. The purple color choices also don't really scream "Hey, I want to make this look militaristic".
Has anyone ever asked Lance Barr about why he made the NA Super NES look like that?
Japan is the best by far. North America has a better box design than Europe, but the NA SNES console is hideous. And for God’s sake, can’t Europe decide on a single age rating? Also, is it really necessary to put the warning about how the power adapter isn’t included on the front of the box, in every language?
Super Mario World at #1? Lol, no. It should be in Super Mario All-Stars’ place, and Mario All-Stars should be much lower on the list, if only because it’s not really a Super NES game.
I like this list because Tears of the Kingdom is awesome and criminally underrated. I’m also surprised that IGN still exists. I thought they folded sometime in the GameCube era.
Hot take: the 2600 version of Pac-Man is better than the NES version. Graphically, yes, it’s awful, but it plays faster than the NES version and the sound effects are iconic. It’s not a great arcade port, but it’s a better game.
It’s funny that even 30 years later on a powerful system like the Switch 2, the screen still won’t be as razor sharp as the image was on an actual Virtual Boy.
And for the record, playing Virtual Boy games doesn’t cause headaches or eye strain, in the same way that Taco Bell doesn’t actually cause diarrhea. Unless you’re just weak, I guess.
I can't imagine using the Joycon as a mouse for anything longer than a few minutes. The mouse feature just feels like it was tagged on as an afterthought so Nintendo could say the Switch 2 hardware had something new beyond more processing power and a bigger screen. I mean, there's a reason you can't buy a mouse for any other platform shaped like a Joycon, because the Joycon sucks as a mouse.
I’m the last person to be anal retentive about frame rates, but this just comes across as sloppy and lazy, especially if they can’t guarantee 60 fps on the Switch 2. The Switch has the largest user base, and the Switch 2 is the fastest selling platform in history. If you’re not prioritizing those platforms, what are you doing?
@Jack_Goetz The character art especially looks like a Gamecube game, and not a very good one. This game is undoubtedly pushing a lot more polygons than any Gamecube game, so it looks like they really tried to make this look terrible.
What nonsense. Ifixit get clicks because negativity is more profitable, and Nintendolife gets clicks for reporting it. The internet is stupid, and it would be better for humanity if it just went away.
John Romero hasn’t made a decent game since like 1997, stop acting like it’s so surprising that he failed again. Yes, Microsoft are terrible managers, but so is Romero.
I desperately want a Pro Controller in different colors, and not just changing the color of the grips like they did with Switch 1. I would buy a blue one that matches the Joycon blue instantly.
Why would anyone think they're not real Switch 2 units? The launch is a week and half away. Do they think the Switch 2s would be teleported to retailers on June 5th?
It’s not “Nintendo pricing”, it’s 2025 pricing. If GTA VI launched on time, it would be “GTA VI pricing”. And for Christ’s sake, charging more than you think a video game is worth isn’t “evil”. No one is forcing you to buy it. How disconnected from reality can someone be?
I don’t know if this is a UK/US English thing, but “blow-up doll” almost always refers to a sex toy in US English. “Inflatable doll” would be used for this thing. Or maybe Nintendolife knows how to get clicks and it means the same in UK English. 🤨
While costs for everything are increasing, and video games have remained largely the same $50-$60 for literally decades, the number of people who are just shocked at price increases is astonishing. How on earth can you expect games to remain the same while everything else costs more? Do you imagine video game companies live in an imaginary fantasy land where everything still costs the same as it did in 1995?
An OLED Switch in a custom, joy con-less case could make a good replacement. The Switch 2 would be overkill for this. The theoretical Switch Louvre app could be used entirely with the touchscreen.
I think the art style looks great, except for the character art and animation, which looks gross. There's such a sharp contrast between the quality of the environment and the quality of the characters.
Probably, but I’ll be mostly digital. I don’t understand how these things are supposed to be terrible, they give you more options than digital, but without having to pay for the higher cost of a fully physical game card.
I'm slightly concerned, since it seems like SD Express cards aren't readily available in the US. According to the article, it's not a new format, but I haven't heard anything about this format prior to the Switch 2 announcement, and the only companies that seem to make them are SanDisk and Lexar, and only in small sizes (128-256 GB). Amazon and Best Buy both have a single type of SD Express card currently available, with Best Buy only having a 128 GB model. I assume the situation will improve closer to the Switch 2 launch, but it's not at all like standard micro SD cards where you can just buy them almost anywhere in multiple sizes and brands, online and in stores.
It will be interesting to see how long these prices hold. Nintendo had already shipped hundreds of thousands of units to the US before the tariffs took effect, so it will be interesting to see if there are any price increases by Christmas.
The North American one has the kid bravely exploring with his pet monkey, the kid on the EU/Japan one has a doofus expression on his face and he's randomly pointing at something. The logo on the NA one is also miles better, with the EU version looking like it was made in Microsoft Word.
While Survival Kids wouldn't be anywhere near the top of my list of most wanted Konami games, I think the main problem is that it looks like absolute garbage. It looks like a cheap mobile game by a no-name developer.
It’s interesting how it seems like people who like Wind Waker also like Majora’s Mask. They’re both my least favorite Zelda games and I want to see a detailed analysis about how liking Wind Waker correlates with liking Majora’s Mask. That said, as a huge Zelda fan, I have spent a disproportionate amount of time playing it trying to force myself to like it. My perfect version of Wind Waker would have the gameplay improvements of the Wii U version with the color palette of the GameCube version. The coloring of the Wii U HD version is just too bright and garish.
It’s interesting how even legendary systems had pretty mediocre-to-terrible launch line ups. Even with all the negativity surrounding Switch 2’s software prices, it really does have a great launch lineup that is easily better than any other Nintendo launch. I’m surprised so many say otherwise, I mean we’re talking about the actual quality of the games available at launch, not the hype, not the marketing, not your childhood memories. The Super NES is my favorite system, but its launch lineup was pretty bad. Incidentally, were Gradius III and Sim City available at launch? I remember them releasing in the months after launch, not at launch.
Has there ever been any confirmation of a lower price point for digital in the US? If this game is $69.99 for digital and $79.99 for physical, the $80 price point isn’t about getting more money from selling a Mario Kart cartridge, it’s about using a mass market AAA release to help kill off physical game sales in general so that Nintendo doesn’t have to share profit with retailers. They want the eshop to be everyone’s default method for purchasing games. It’s kind of deviously brilliant, because if your average consumer sees a game for $80 at GameStop and $70 in the Nintendo eshop, who are they going to blame for being greedy? Not Nintendo.
I wonder if the long-rumored, supposedly finished Switch 1 ports of Wind Waker/Twilight Princess might still be released for Switch 1. Nintendo isn't going to just stop releasing Switch 1 games after Switch 2 is released, and releasing them for Switch 1 would show that Nintendo is still supporting their old system with major titles.
I won't be buying Wind Waker. After buying it for Gamecube and Wii U and attempting to like it, it's just not for me. I hate the sailing aspect, even in the improved Wii U version, which made it less annoying. I don't want the sailing to be less annoying, I want it to not exist.
As a docked-only Switch player, the home button thing is super annoying for me. I guess I’ll have to keep a Joycon 2 charged just to be able to turn the system on. At least the Joycons would serve a purpose now, I don’t think I would notice if someone broke into my house and stole them.
$79.99 is obviously too expensive for Mario Kart, but it makes sense that digital versions should be cheaper. If it's $69.99 for digital, I wouldn't have a problem with that.
A reminder that US prices do not include sales tax, while much of the rest of the world sensibly does. No one in the US is paying $449.99 for a Switch 2. The actual cost in the state I'm from would be 489.68
I don’t think a May 15 release date would be too early, since it’s clear that the Switch 2 hardware has been ready for some time, and I would wager at least some of the launch titles are also long completed.
@Ryu_Niiyama absolutely correct. You don’t get market value by trading in games. It’s like when people are shocked that pawn shops won’t give them market value for their items. If you want market value, sell it yourself. If you need money quick, trade it in.
The only emulation problems I’ve noticed are in Super Mario Land, but I’ve noticed the same issues with this game in other emulators as well. I can only enjoy SML on original hardware.
Everyone in this story sounds awful, from the copyright claim over a LinkedIn post to the drama queen. "I will not stop being who I am". Lol, okay. How old are these people, 13?
As someone who knows absolutely nothing about emulation, is there a technical reason why the Super Game Boy version can’t be emulated in the NSO Game Boy app? I know the SGB version can be emulated, but would it need to be emulated in the Super NES app rather than the Game Boy app?
@Daze_of_Reality We all understand the point, the point is that this is hardly a new revelation. Items can be removed from any streaming service at anytime. For examples of this, see literally every streaming service. Unless a company has indefinite legal ownership, which Nintendo does not have with Super Soccer, any item can and will be removed if the copyright holder decides. Sorry if this is news to you.
Oh, no, not Super Soccer, the game literally no one actually cares about. Raise your hand if you’ve played this game for more than three minutes in the past month, you weirdos.
I would imagine that Nintendo also thought of these alternatives, but went with what they did because it was less complicated. If you're sorting through the number of echoes this game has, there is no perfect solution. Although offering a choice would have been nice.
