The European version isn't that great to begin with, but it's marred by the stupid Nintendo Magazine "Awesome" logo and the disproportionally tiny and weirdly placed rating logo. Also, I will never stop thinking the European Nintendo Seal of Quality is just weird. Why change it for Europe? Do Europeans not respond well to ovals and the word "official"?
Nintendo doesn’t need Summer Game Fest. Sony doesn’t need Summer Game Fest. It seems like the only developers willing to pay to participate in this are developers who can’t get publicity on their own. Maybe some of these are indie developers with quality products, but they’re the exception, not the rule. Maybe I’m missing something, but was anything important announced at this thing? At all? That’s not a question that would have ever been asked about even the lamest E3.
Also, it would be helpful to remember that inflation exists. When TTYD was released in 2004, it was the equivalent of $83 USD today. That $50 Wii U game released in 2012 is the equivalent of $68 USD today.
Remasters like Metroid Prime should be cheaper than remakes like Thousand Year Door, but I have no problem paying full-price for games that are remade from the ground up like TTYD. There isn't any reason why TTYD should be cheaper than any other new Switch game, since that's what it is - a new Switch game. If it was never released on Gamecube, would TTYD be worth $60? I would say yes, and besides, a large chunk of the Switch audience wasn't even born when the original was released. Just because you played it on Gamecube 20 years ago doesn't mean it should be cheaper now, grandpa.
Oh come on, it’s absolutely Lego’s fault that these are so expensive. Well, not really “fault”. They’re collectibles and people are willing to pay, so they charge what they can get. Legos aren’t food or medicine, if they can get $300 for this, good for them.
"REALMz", lol. Who names these things? Even if the controller weren't terrible, I can't bring myself to purchase a controller that's not made by Nintendo or Hori.
He pays 20-30% of his surplus income, not his total income. Also, everyone is acting like Nintendo put this guy in jail and took his money. The courts did that, because he was plainly guilty.
People keep mentioning Super Mario Land’s bad controls? What? It plays like Super Mario Bros, it controls great. I have never heard anyone complain about bad controls, and now people are mentioning in like it’s generally accepted that the controls are bad.
@Clammy Yes, they could have, but as you just said, no one would notice in a slow-moving RPG. Why would Nintendo want to spend even the slightest amount of effort on something that no one would notice?
It's an RPG, why would 60 fps matter? Stability is what's important, and for the record, I simply do not believe anyone who says they would have noticed that the game was running at 30 instead of 60 FPS if no one had told them.
It kind of makes sense, since Atari is mostly viewed as a retro 70's-80's brand. Infogrames doesn't seem to have the same brand power in the US as it did in Europe, probably because no one knows how to pronounce it or what it means. Is it pronounced "Infograhms"? "Infograymes"? And what the hell is a grame?
But where will I go to get Funko Pop figures? I'm surprised they've lasted this long, even if you buy physical in a brick and mortar store, Best Buy or Target offer better prices and a better shopping experience.
Don't buy SD cards on Amazon, period. It doesn't matter what the brand is or who it's sold by, even if it says that it's a SanDisk card sold by Amazon.com. Their warehouses are loaded with fakes.
Super Mario Land is criminally underrated. Super Mario Land 2 is a big improvement in a lot of ways (most notably graphics), but I still think the original controls better and is just more fun. It's like a short sequel to Super Mario Bros., with similar play control but with more imaginative worlds and better level design.
It's nice that Tropic Haze's attorneys didn't try to milk them for more money. Their advice during their one day of being employed as legal counsel seems to have been "You're screwed, do whatever Nintendo asks, you morons".
Yikes, the lag and jittery frame rate are pretty bad. Hopefully this will be improved in the final version. Also, I'm not sure whose idea it was to have a 13 year old boy as voice actor in a Contra game, but maybe someone who has reached puberty would have been a better choice.
I always wondered what would have happened if Nintendo launched the VB with a full-color display. Nintendo considered a full-color display for the VB but went with a monochrome display due to cost. Launching at a premium price would have posed its challenges, but it's hard to imagine worse sales than the monochrome VB.
@-wc- Yeah, I bought the Link's Awakening remake and don't regret the purchase, but it's still a disappointing release for me. From a purely profit motive standpoint, "buying the game and not leaving a one-star Amazon review" is ideal for Nintendo, but I still think Link's Awakening DX is the best version of the game, and I don't have any nostalgia-tinted attachment to that version. I just think it's the best artistic realization of Link's Awakening.
I want to be excited, but no hint of a release timeframe or platforms? Why wouldn’t they at least announce the platforms? Unless one of the platforms is Switch 2 and they can’t yet…
Microsoft still wants to sell Series X/S systems this holiday season. PS5 is outselling Xbox 2 to 1 with no sign of improvement for Microsoft, so they’re going to pivot to selling software on multiple platforms, just not quite yet.
Castlevania II a great game, and I have no memory of it being considered bad until that YouTube comedy clickbait video from The Angry Nintendo Nerd came out.
I think Castlevania: The Adventure gets a lot of unnecessary hate, especially when compared to its sequel. Yes, it’s slow, but so is Belmont’s Revenge. It also had great graphics and sound for the hardware, and I don’t think the level design is any worse than Belmont’s Revenge. Neither are the best examples of Castlevania games, but I don’t think Castlevania: The Adventure is just barely better than Haunted Castle, which is pure garbage.
It’s interesting that there wasn’t global consistency with something as basic as the Nintendo logo in the 80s, with the shorter oval around “Nintendo” being used in the US from 1985 and the longer oval still being used in Japan and Europe until the late 80s.
Is there a reason why Harvest Moon 64 is routinely listed as a Japan-only release for NSO? I assume it’s a rights issue, but Harvest Moon SNES is available for NSO outside Japan, so I’m not sure why HM 64 couldn’t also be released.
I think the score is a little generous. I don't think it was just the devil reference and crosses that made NoA want to skip releasing this (after all, it would be easy enough to change both of them). It's punishingly difficult (remember what happened to the Japanese SMB2) and really not that great of a game.
Just think, this dreck is a result of Universal Pictures losing their trademark lawsuit against Nintendo over Donkey Kong. Anyone can make a Kong game, and it looks like anyone has.
“So, after umming and ahhing, I've come to the conclusion that of all the mainstream consoles from the big three manufacturers, 'Switch 2' is the one that makes the least compelling case for really requiring backwards compatibility.“
Why, though? Why is backwards compatibility for the Switch 2 less important than other consoles? This article manages to not really say anything beyond its awful premise. It’s just clickbait, and hey, it looks like it worked.
“Latinx” isn’t so much controversial as it is dumb. It sounds dumb in Spanish, it sounds dumb in English, and there already is a gender neutral form of Latino.
I have a Majora’s Mask N64 retail demo cartridge that’s pretty rare, but other than that, not much. I do have the Skyward Sword gold Wii remote, but IDK how rare that actually is, though.
I’ve seen about half of Blather’s collection, and another 1/3 would be relatively easy, but some of the collection would be more difficult. Vitruvian Man is rarely shown to the public because of its fragility, and Beauty Looking Back is also not regularly shown. He must have lucked out with the timing on both of those. The terra-cotta soldier, Olmec colossal head, and the King Kamehameha statue are also located in more out-of-the way places. So kudos to him, while most of the art is located in Western Europe, Japan, and North America, some are more difficult to see.
Maybe everyone knows this but me, but I just read Natsume’s Wikipedia page and apparently the Natsume that publishes this game isn’t the same Natsume that publishes Harvest Moon, and the “Atari” in Natsume Atari has nothing to do with the Atari everyone knows.
I prefer the NES version of Super Mario Bros, and the Super NES version of the rest. The controls of the Super NES SMB feel more floaty. Also, and this is going to sound weird, the soundtrack of the SNES version has a note that always sounded like someone yawning to me? I don't know what the sound actually is, but I find it distracting. I think this is just me being weird.
@Kazman2007 But these games are available to everyone? Anyone who wants them, at any rate. And I wasn't aware libraries considered themselves to be in the business of historic preservation. When they have a lot of books that never get checked out by anyone, they throw them away or try to sell them for as cheap as possible. Not everything needs to be preserved. Video game "preservationists" always remind me of those people on the "Hoarders" TV show who insist every piece of garbage they own is important and must be saved.
Nothing amuses me more than presenting the "Video Game History Foundation" as a real thing that should be taken seriously. I have nothing in particular against piracy, do what you want, but you're not "preserving history". These games aren't "completely unavailable", some of them were printed in the millions and can be easily bought for a few bucks on ebay.
Oh good, more content for a mediocre Ubisoft game. No one cares, Sega, bring Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future to Switch and give us a Jet Set Radio III while you’re at it.
It’s disappointing that Nintendo isn’t more committed to providing accessibility options. They used to make a controller that would allow hands-free NES control back in the early 90s, so the least they could do now is provide simple button remap options for those who need it. Regardless of software options, it seems like a controller designed for those with limited ability to grasp a standard controller would be helpful. Does any third party manufacture a larger controller that would be easier to use?
