It’s amazing how many of these pieces I remember from the original publication. I was fortunate that my parents subscribed to Nintendo Power, and my eyes lit up like Christmas morning every month when the new issue arrived. Of them, the Yoshi’s Island and Mario 64 were two of my favorites, but I distinctly remember the Mega Man and FFIII ones as well. I think what made them memorable is the inclusion of both professional quality art and amateur. Sometimes I wish I’d sent something in, but I always felt outclassed. How dare you make an old man cry with this piece?! Oops… sorry, midlife crisis took over, I should be good now. Thanks for the walk through memory lane.
@Wewewi Typically I’d agree, and initially I was skeptical. Reading through the patent and seeing how it’s actually implemented, I’d say Nintendo has a good case for this one. It’s actually an innovative method of grabbing multiple items and moving them in real space.
I’m not sure why this justifies a special package and $22 price tag. They should’ve just put it in a box like the other characters and do a new series launch that adds King Bomb-omb, Penguin, Chargin Chuck, and Cow. Or roll them out in doubles packs with pre-established characters if there’s concerned less popular characters wouldn’t sell.
I might end up getting this digitally. I’ve bought all of the game physically because of the ability to order a copy with a Steelbook as a preorder bonus, but this time no one has announced one.
The recent Bandai announcement was missing some new Switch titles. If I were to guess, we have a direct coming up that will announce the Switch editions of some of those games and potentially Helldivers 2 with NDA’s in effect. But perhaps that’s just the optimism speaking.
Hey, I’m tried to time Warframe into the free text field of the survey, but it’s not giving any results. That game sees enhanced resolution in both handheld and full screen. It also sees a consistent 30 FPS. Compared to the Switch this is a massive step up where the game was blurry due to dynamic resolution scaling and often dropped below the 30 FPS cap.
Gosh…. Now I feel silly for saying that we didn’t have a price is the other news article. $20 seems like the perfect price, still terrified about longevity of the online play.
Still no price… I was thinkigng about this again last week and am contemplating picking it up. Seems like a $20 game though with optional season passes, similar to Rocket League when it first launched.
@PJOReilly Awesome! I’ve really been enjoying it on the Switch 2 so far and hadn’t even realized the online components weren’t working right. Great to know that I’ll be able to join the Galactic Hub once I get a bit further!
Huh… I’m not sure how I feel about a single player spin off. I wouldn’t mind a dedicated co-op experience though. I wonder why a spin off is there right direction on this.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he asked for his name to not be in the credits based on his involvement within the company as a whole. It’d be like Bill Gates putting his name in the credits of Halo.
This is really cool that third part developers are engaging in this feature. I hope more do. However, it’s a bit disappointing that the game is not on the Switch because I don’t know anyone who will be getting a Switch 2 during the launch period. Nice that I can share with them though… I wonder how that works from a software standpoint since it’s not a Switch 1 game.
I loved Arms, just the difficulty in the story mode ramped up far too quickly. I got burned out trying to see the ending of the game. Multiplayer online was always a thrill though. Spent quite a bit of time at launch playing it until Splatoon 2 came out.
This ought to be an interesting dispute considering James Earl Jones signed an agreement with Disney to permit the usage of AI generation in producing the voice of Darth Vader in the future.
@Jeronan Genki didn’t leak anything that hadn’t already leaked up to that point. Earliest leak on the design was 3-months earlier than the Genki incident. Dbrand quite literally dropped a leaked image 3 weeks before Genki. Nintendo is using Genki as a scapegoat.
Additionally, the media would’ve focused on the negative regardless because the console is significantly more expensive than the previous generation. The reception has nothing to do with Genki’s actions.
@N00BiSH Depends on what Nintendo leverages as evidence. Hopefully they settle because there could be unintended consequences in case law if they go through.
@larryisaman They didn’t prove the legitimacy of the leaks, they demonstrated that they trust the leaks. The leaks could have been horribly incorrect and they’d be scrambling to adjust their designs. The leaks beforehand are the core of the issue, which it’s possible that Genki accessed those, but that could be difficult to prove as individuals posted 3D renders online previously, which it would require proving those renders were based on actual leaks or theories. Genki likely aren’t the leakers and this could set an awful precedent.
Nintendo is free to dress it up how they want, but they need to demonstrate damages. The problem is the precedent. If Nintendo is making the claim that they own the rights to Nintendo products and therefore no one else can produce accessories without a license, what then becomes of 3rd party cellphone case makers? Suddenly Apple and Samsung get to dictate who can manufacture cases.
@Hank_Scorpio What about the leakers on Discord/4Chan/Twitter? The YouTubers who 3D printed the Switch 2 earlier and gave instructions on how to do it? Genki is being singled out and targeted.
I don’t see the issue. What makes Genki single-handedly responsible for any damage? Nintendo was already aware of the leaks, Genki only put them out on a more public platform than a bunch of Nintendo centric YouTubers. This could set a dangerous precedent for 3rd party accessory makers in general.
I wonder how it’ll affect the second hand market. If people don’t want the game on carts, will those inevitably be cheaper used than new? And if so, will they be cheaper than sale prices on games?
And just like that Xbox lost the console war. The last place console needs to find ways to bring in new sales, not drive them away. The real winner here is Nintendo because they’ll be the most affordable console on the market by year’s end.
Huh… that’s a bit different than I was anticipating. I was hoping I’d be able to lend out via internet. Would be nice to be able to share with a family member if they’re not nearby, especially with the summer coming up.
I’m quite surprised by the number of people who were able to preorder. Quite disappointed as I had multiple browsers and devices trying to order and didn’t succeed at any of them. I take comfort in knowing that I pre-ordered through a European retailer earlier this month, but that step feels entirely unnecessary in this day and age.
@earthbound I think that games are a product of their time. Much like any literary work or movie. It’s difficult to compare a game rooted in nostalgia to a remake because they’re both microcosmic time capsules of the era they are released in. Some companies do a better job at preserving games than others, and the goal is to appeal to as broad a market as possible. Sometimes they become Daedalus in their execution, given the response to the Final Fantasy remasters, but sometimes they’re iterative like Mario and Zelda.
The goal of any game is to have fun. Create joy. I love many of the games I played as a child, but when go back to play them again now - they simply don’t carry the same weight. That doesn’t meant they have lost any value, just that I have grown and learned more about myself between then and now. Those games still hold a place in my heart for the memories I developed while playing.
Like George Lucas and his Star Wars iterations, remakes represent a more realized vision and are not typically well received by fans. Remakes are also a product of their time, and the director is responsible for steering the ship to meet what they believe will be best for the target audience or enhancing their vision further. Sometimes companies succeed and sometimes they don’t.
@WiltonRoots Bowser hid in his a castle for 5 days after the announcement and blowback. Reggie wasn’t infallible and would tow the party line when he needed to, but he was optics minded. So much of the criticism today would likely be avoided because he considered optics. My best guess is he would’ve advocated for Welcome Tour to be a pack-in to save optics regarding everything else. Not suggesting we’d have $60 games still, just that the explanation would be smoother. I love Nintendo and Switch 2, but from a community management and business relations standpoint this launch has been as disappointing as the 3DS launch.
One of his recent interviews was truly revealing though about the Nintendo culture. It had changed from when he started to when he retired. Iwata’s passing was one of the last catalysts that pushed him to eventually depart. He saw his last big project through and passed the baton.
Welcome seems less for the players and more for the devs. Looking at it that way makes it an even worse proposition because now they’re saying you need to pay to explore the features we want you to implement.
Awe… that’s disappointing. It was a nice alternative to Overwatch. Wish it had worked out. Bought the first season pass, but later heroes just didn’t appeal to me. Season 2’s hero nearly turned me off from it entirely since it was so OP early on.
I think this weekend I’ll ping pong between Monster Hunter games. Last week I picked up more copies of Monster Hunter Wilds than I care to admit, and it got me thinking about all of the older games in the series. Broke out my PSP and ordered a new battery so I’m ready for Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd in addition to 4, GU, Rise, and World. It’s a shame my Wii U died otherwise 3 Ultimate would be on my list as well.
@contractcooker Artificial control of supply and demand, scalpers vs. scalpers, actual players paying good money to scalpers. Sounds like human nature to me.
@MrGawain Foldable screens are targeted at people like me who believe that phones have grown too big in the past 15 years. The problem is that even if it fits in my pocket better, the screen is too large. I just want a nice 4” smart phone with a modern chipset.
@Anti-Matter Even worse here is that the devs effectively did a hard reset with the last update so that they could charge for each class/weapon and make more money. So any progress you had was now moot. Cant even keep your progress while the game is maintained.
I’m not anti-F2P, and I respect shut downs as the memories I have with those games will stay with me, like Dragalia Lost. This one is just an awful experience all around.
