Do Acclaim still hold any of their old IP? They were bought and shuttered in 2010 by a company that was subsequently bought by Disney. The press release about their re-launch made it sound like they are looking to support small developers with their experience - which sounds completely unlike Acclaim from back in the day - which is definitely a good thing

WWF Warzone, baby! Let's go back to the days when The Rock was a heel and Vince McMahon was a commentator. When Owen Hart was alive and The Undertaker had never heard of Limp Bizkit. When some pansy Wildlife Fund had no sway over the most electrifying force in sports entertainment! Where special moves required Street Fighter style button combos and create-a-wrestler was just overlaying different textures on a single skin on the model.

It looks a bit like that face mascot that Playstation used at first, the one that was in their Smash Bros style fighting game about 12 years ago as the final boss. Not that that has anything to do with Acclaim

Acclaim IP's was sold left and right, so what do they have left?
There is no way they will get back Turok from Disney for example.

If Midway is revived, they have no IP's either.
Microsoft bought Hydro Thunder and i think Warner Games bought the rest.

What's fascinating is that the revived Microprose still owned most of their IP's except for the Sid Meier ones.

Cinemaware still owned 100% of their IP's after 20 years of being gone.

@springer17 You won't get any Burnout from Acclaim. EA bought the Burnout IP from the creditors in 2004, round about the same time EA bought Criterion Software from Canon.

@stephalear Smash TV was a Midway product and is therefore owned by Warner Bros. Games.

I spent a lot of time on the wizards & warriors trilogy - looking back time has not been kind and I think rare probably had their fingers in it. And Bart v space mutants I played a bit but wasn’t the best game on the NES.

I’ll be surprised if this generates much excitement

@xzacutor glad I'm not the only one who was reminded of Sinistar.
I think you are referring to Williams who developed (and possibly still own) the original arcade classic, but I don't think they outright own the IP if the "sequel" 'Sinistar Unleashed' is any indication, which was was developed by GameFX and published by THQ, it had no involvement from Williams. And that game was over 20+ years ago, who knows who landed the Sinistar IP since then.
The world of video game copyright/trademark is a lot more murky than film and animation, you really don't know who owns what especially with 40+ year old IPs.

The only Acclaim game I have is VEXX PS2 and I still haven't finished the game yet.

I'm honestly at a loss to think what they could announce outside of new games. 90% of their games were licensed. Doubt it would be any of them. The other 10% are owned by other people. Alien 3, Burnout and Extreme G would all be welcomed back. But like I said, I don't see it so I'll wait to be surprised. I can't even think of a mascot platdormer they did...

If I had to take a wild guess based on the single frame that we were given... I'd say they are digging back to the very beginning of their catalog and maybe looking into reviving Star Voyager or Cybernoid from the NES era.

Not sure what the new Acclaim has from the defunct one, but I hope it’ll be fun and good. Honestly, the more developers and publishers out there, the better for the industry and gamers.

Hard to get excited about the logo and name alone when the original Acclaim was cut up into pieces after they filed for bankruptcy over 20 years ago, and this is where a group of investors launched a new company using the Acclaim trademark.

Does anyone remember when they were planning to buy advertising space on tombstones for a new Shadowman? They got a bit crazy in those final years.

Will acclaim not owning any IPs I imagine it’s a new title with a indie style design and development. That screen grab isn’t a hint that is the game.

Sweet Fancy Moses what a game Burnout 2 was…Sega and Namco foundations honed to perfection. 3 stripped out the nostalgia but still gave us one last classic course oriented banger before mainstream racing went open world forever.

I just remember seeing that acclaim logo popping up at the beginning of games i loved growing up. Hope its something good.

What original games has Acclaim made in its history?
98% of them were solely licenses of movies, TV shows, comics, and intellectual property from other developers like Midway and Williams Entertainment.
The only four games I remember that were 100% original were Xtreme-G, Re-volt, Vexx, and Forsaken.

@Johnny_Arthur Acclaim bought out at least two developers, Probe (who did a lot of ports in the early '90s, likely bought after they did Genesis Mortal Kombat) and Iguana Entertainment (who made Aero the Acrobat).

Acclaim was mostly a publisher, not a developer.

Acclaim did swipe the NBA Jam trademark from Midway, which is why they had to rename them after a couple games.

@vio Extreme G should be put on NSO, but XGRA should get a remaster. That was a good game even with some frame drops, but it would be fantastic if those were cleaned up.

@judaspete I would love it for Nightdive to remaster all 4 games, but that seems unlikely. In fact I don't think Nightdive has yet to remaster a single racing game. Seems like they put most of their focus on first person shooters with a few exceptions like The Thing and Shadow Man.

@vio Yeah, NightDive also seems reluctant to deal with multiplayer for some reason. Was really disappointed that got cut out of Turok 2, and they have made it abundantly clear they are not touching Rage Wars.

@judaspete You know they added multiplayer(with crossplay) to Turok 2, right? And no surprise, the servers are now ghost towns.. So I can kind of understand now why they didn't want to originally.

It'd be nice to assume they have the rights to every IP that was shown. But, not holding my breath. They had some good games, but there were some seriously bad licensed cash grabs that where some of the worst games ever. I'm probably in the minority, but I remember that more than their hits. Hopefully this reboot of the brand can clean things up.

Test Drive series was originally from Accolade until Test Drive 5, the same that published Bubsy, now, Test Drive is owned by Nacon

They were of their time, that's for sure. I have no idea how Acclaim 2.0 will work. Just gotta wait and see.

They did buy LJN, adding the rainbow to their logo. So maybe we'll get Back to the Future remake and collect more clocks.

The only thing that i can think of that would hype me up is a return to form for Turok (Modern Doom is proof that there is an Audience for it) - however that isn’t going to happen as Turok is owned by Universal nowadays, and they are already making a game.

Most of Acclaim's catalogue was based on licences (Turok, South Park, Shadowman, WWF/E, etc), stuff they ported to home consoles for other companies (Smash TV, Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, etc) or stuff they published that is now owned by other companies (Burnout). Plus, this isn't the same company it was. Jeff Jarrett and co. just bought the name.

That was horrible! The presentation itself was fantastic. Pity they only had these cheap looking mobile games to fill it with.

Non of these scream Acclaim to me. And the generic SSX Tricky Clone was perphaps the most disappointing.

@chickje The Prisoning: Fletcher's Quest looked potentially fun to me. Unfortunately they lost all their franchises when they went bankrupt and they got sold off to others. A group of investors just decided to buy the name and become an indie game publisher.

Why buy the name if you're not going to do anything with the legacy? The SSX Tricky game and the basketball game had potential with a better graphical style. Make a Burnout game and call it Crashout or something.

“Akklaim” wasn’t a brand I associated with quality back in the day. Friends and I played Wizards and Warriors and maybe 1 or 2 of their other NES games, and then I steered clear afterwards.

I’m mildly interested in seeing what they try to revive, though.

Meh. Looks like a bunch of indie games. The SSX style game looked mildly interesting. That last one looked like a particle system demo with like a platformer theme.

Very little direct ties with their legacy IP.

@Ashfordwasp TD2 on SNES was a blast, and there's no such thing as too much first person driving on Switch(es).

They have a long climb to get back to where they were. There was nothing particularly stand out (apart from maybe the basketball game...but for all the wrong reasons! What the heck was that?)

Did Microsoft not own the rights to Burnout? They bought Criterion and then of course closed the studio?

I quit watching after the third game, I like indie games but not low quality Atari 2600-like that they're showing 😕

Some of them looked interesting, but I'll need to see more. I also need to get a sense of what this new "Acclaim" even is. But I'm all for giving more indies more exposure, so here's hoping this is a good thing!

Going by the sales it had I might be the only person that enjoyed Turok Evolution. Absolutely loved that game at the time. I thought was a lot of fun as it didn't take itself too seriously and the music was brilliant. In contrast the later Turok game did a lot better but I couldn't stand it myself. I have unique tastes I guess. I would love to see a Turok Evolution reboot but I'm probably the only one. I played Turok Evolution on PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and PC. I bought the Gamecube version at pretty much full price but got the others at bargain basement prices.
