Re: Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy Announced For Nintendo Switch

TheFox

@wazlon Yeah, the second Edgeworth game stayed in Japan. I had the first one and I though it brought a much needed refresh to the gameplay (I thought AA3 was already starting to feel overly repetitive). That said, I thought the writing in Edgeworth was a bit flat. I was hoping the second game would improve that and was convinced it would come to the west, but unfortunately it never happened.

Re: Atlus Listening To Etrian Odyssey Fan Feedback For Future Entries

TheFox

I've got two Etrian Odyssey games on 3DS. If you don't have that system and you like dungeon crawlers, I'd definitely recommend them. That said, the 3DS seemed like such the perfect platform for these games, it almost seems wrong to play them on Switch. Oh yeah, and they take me FOREVER to beat. I've still got one more to go on 3DS, so I'm going to have to pass on these.

Re: Labyrinth of Zangetsu

TheFox

I've been playing this game for the last fest days, and it's amazing! It's kind of like Etrian Odyssey, but with all the cute stripped out and permadeath thrown in for good measure. But the turn based combat with a front and back line and dungeon crawling through a grid based map is much the same. But there's enough to set it apart so while it does feel familiar, it still stands on its own.

Re: Surprise! The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan Is Now Available On Switch

TheFox

@VoodooTrumpet I don't know that what this game has can be called a twist. It shows you right at the beginning what's going on. I liked this game but my favorite in the series is House of Ashes where a bunch of Marines run afoul of Akkadian demons. And it's nice to see an ancient culture other than Egypt, Rome or Greece as a setting for a game.

Re: Talking Point: Which Is Your Favourite Nintendo Controller? Every Nintendo Pad Ranked

TheFox

I'm not sure how to rank the Wii remote and Wii U game pad against the other controllers because they were more than just another controller. When they were used well, they were amazing. But when all you needed was traditional controls, sometimes they were more of a hindrance. As far as "normal controllers," I'd have to give it to the Switch Pro controller. It's not a very exciting answer, but it's hard to beat (except in racing games were the lack of analog shoulder buttons is an embarrassing oversight). The only one I really don't like is the NES game pad. I thought those were too small and uncomfortable. That might be because I was used to Atari 2600 and 7800 joysticks, but either way, I hated those things.

Re: Talking Point: Which Nintendo Franchise Should Illumination Tackle Next?

TheFox

Two I'd rule out is (and I know people will get mad at me) Kid Icarus and Star Fox. I actually don't know much about Kid Icarus as I've never played any of the games beyond Amiibo Tap. And I doubt I'm alone in that, I don't think there's enough people in the general public aware of the franchise to make it make sense as a movie. Star Fox may be a recognizable name, but it's really fallen out of the top tier over the last 20 years. Also, I could see it working as a movie strictly for kids, but for cross generational appeal, I just don't see fighter pilots with fox and bunny heads on human bodies working. The last person to yell at me for saying that brought up Star Wars and all the weird aliens in those movies. Yes, weird aliens make sense in a galaxy full of weird aliens. But when anyone over the age of 14 sees a fighter pilot with a bunny head (or even worse, Slippy Toad), they're going to cringe.

Re: Poll: Did You Use Motion Controls In Mario Kart Wii?

TheFox

@Euler It doesn't really do anything. It's just a hunk of plastic that holds the Wiimote. That said, holding onto the wheel does seem to make it easier to judge your turns. I have several motion control racing games, and if I don't use the wheel, the steering seems a little clumsier.

On another note, I've had this game since it first released and I didn't realize you could play it any other way than motion controls.

Re: Video: Is 3DS StreetPass Dead?

TheFox

Well, that's a release. I still have two street pass games I've never finished. And I have three 3DS's so occassionally I'll have them tag each other so I can play them.

Re: Rumour: The Infamous Phillips CD-i Zelda Games Are Being Remastered For Switch

TheFox

Obviously, Nintendo will never let this happen. But I wonder how these games would turn out. I never played a CDi but what I've heard about these games is 1. Nightmare inducing cutscenes 2. poor controls. If they improved the controls, would the games still be terrible? As someone who owns another of the 90s failed systems, the degree of awfulness of the games on failed systems is often grossly exaggerated.

Re: 50 Best Nintendo Switch Games So Far

TheFox

@Hero-of-WiiU Maybe because Engage's story is somewhere between awful and nonexistent? I really enjoy the gameplay, but the worthless dialog that is little more than waifus and fanboys gushing about how much they love you is a huge detractor.

Re: Video: Splatoon 3 DLC Wave 1 Is All Style And No Substance

TheFox

@Kameken While I'm not impressed with this DLC, I wouldn't agree that Splatoon has a history of selling what should be free updates. The original game on Wii U didn't have any payed DLC, and the only thing you had to pay for was Octo Expansion. And I don't know too many games that give you a second single player campaign for free. And of course their was the core game where they added more arenas, weapons and gear in the normal updates.

Re: Countdown: Wii U eShop Spotlight - Star Fox Guard

TheFox

I bought Star Fox Zero as soon as it came out, and the disappointment was immediate. For two or three year, I didn't pay any mind to the second disc that came with it. But when I finally gave Guard a chance, I fell in love. While it seems simple and basic, I enjoyed this game to no end.

Re: Random: Illustrator Builds Mii-Inspired Character Creator With Unreal Engine 5

TheFox

@TheBigBlue Probably because he was bored. NL covers a lot of projects that fall into that category. And the article even says he wanted to practice creating in the Unreal Engine. I wonder if he's trying to find a way to put them into practical use, or if it was really just something to play around with and nothing more. And if he is looking to do something with them, I really hope he gives options for eyes beyond solid black dots.

Re: Sonic Frontiers' Free Sonic Adventure 2 DLC Offer Ends Next Week

TheFox

@Selim I'm really enjoying it. No, it's not the greatest thing ever, but I like wandering around the large levels (it isn't quite a true open world), searching for collectables, seeing where all the rails go, etc. And the alter like things that send you into short levels that look like past games is kind of a cool way to mix things up, but since they are distinctly outside of the open world, it doesn't become a jumbled mess of a game like Forces. I noticed the comments here tend to be negative, but watch some videos with gameplay on YouTube. It seems to have gotten a mostly positive reception, so just watch someone play it and see if it appeals to you.

Re: Gallery: Fire Emblem Engage Main Character Designer Shares Stunning Artwork Of Heroes

TheFox

For the most part, I like the characters. But I wish they'd get over the 13-year-old girl thing. They're almost always annoying and it's really hard to take the mother/son relationship between Lumera and Alear seriously when the mother looks younger than the son. I'm not saying she needed to look like an old hag, but they could have at least made her look like an adult.

Re: Round Up: The Previews Are In For Fire Emblem Engage

TheFox

These give me some hope. I've only played two FE games. Shadow of Valentia is one of my favorite games on 3DS. The story and gameplay were both great. Then I went back and got Fates, and was terribly disappointed. The battles were far less engaging than in Valentia, and it seemed like they put all their effort into the relationship simulator. And despite that, I thought the story in Fates was downright nauseating.

Re: PSA: A Free Sonic Frontiers Demo Is Now Available On The eShop

TheFox

@huyi Maybe they're thinking about people like me. I would have bought it on Switch, but I was worried about performance, so I bought the PS4 version instead. Had a demo been available at the time, and it ran smoothly enough to allay my worries, I would have bought the Switch version.

Re: Japanese Charts: Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Sales Overtake Splatoon 3

TheFox

@dimi Maybe in part. But it's also showing the general trend of Japan turning away from consoles in favor of handhelds. The total sales of PS4 are only a fraction of totals sales for Switch. Taking into account how well the PS4 sold around the world and it didn't have the supply problems of the PS5, the only conclusion is that the Japanese just aren't buying home consoles the way they used to.

Re: Nintendo Unveils Fire Emblem Engage Expansion Pass, Wave 1 DLC Launches 20th January 2023

TheFox

I don't know about the DLC, but the voice acting in that trailer made me ill. The first FE game I ever played was Shadows of Valentia on 3DS. It was amazing in regards to gameplay, story and voice acting. Then I bought Fates: Birthright... I can barely bring myself to play it. The gameplay feels mediocre and the story and voice acting is insufferable. This new game is giving me Fates vibes with added stomach churning levels of waifu nonsense.

Re: Video: Nintendo Land Will Likely Never Come To Switch, But That's Okay

TheFox

@Crono1973 Sort of, but some of them were legitimately fun (but not all of them). It was kind of like the Wii Play games, but much more developed and you'd have to spend a lot more time to finish them. I think it would be cool if they came out with Nintendoland 2 with all new games. Part of me say that is that as a Wii U owner, I'm a little tired of see all the games I bought for that system ported over to Switch. But also, some of those games where built around knowing one player would be looking at a completely different screen than the other players. It wouldn't translate to the Switch unless each person promised to not peek at the other player's corner of the screen (and how well did that work on N64 Goldeneye?). Other games required the touch screen so they would work in handheld mode, but not in docked.
