I never recovered from the tragic mistake of buying Karateka for the Atari 7800 back in the 80s. It's universally recognized as the worst port of the game, by far. Which is kind of weird because Karateka for the Atari 800 computer was apparently pretty good. But the version I had? Unplayable!
I'm not sure I see the point of buying controllers without analog sticks. Sure, I've got games that don't use them, but having controllers that only work on some of the games seems like more trouble than their worth.
Zen makes some really good pinball, but I am so sick of Marvel and Star Wars, I pretty much avoid anything associated with them. It's unfortunate Zen makes so much of their pinball based on those two properties.
@Magician I have the Switch version. It runs really well. I'm sure the PS version is better just by virtue of the system's power, but if you did want it on Switch, there aren't any performance issues that should stop you.
I won't begrudge anyone who loves Smash all the content this game was given. But for me, the tragedy on Switch was the game Arms. Such a wonderful idea but woefully underdeveloped. I would have like to see some of this effort given to adding more meat to that game.
I never played it, but it sounds like roughly the same control scheme as Liberation Maiden. Initially, I kind of liked how that game worked, but there was something just awkward enough about the combination of control stick + touch pad + fast action that it was hard to play more than five or ten minutes.
I would have thought Spyro the Dragon would have been the game that traced its roots back to Wales. The dragon is straight off their flag, and abuse of sheep.
@wazlon Yeah, the second Edgeworth game stayed in Japan. I had the first one and I though it brought a much needed refresh to the gameplay (I thought AA3 was already starting to feel overly repetitive). That said, I thought the writing in Edgeworth was a bit flat. I was hoping the second game would improve that and was convinced it would come to the west, but unfortunately it never happened.
It's unfortunate this game didn't sell well. Of the AAA publishers, Ubisoft is one of the few that will try something outside of the live service and "dude-bro shooter" category. So to see this fail while Assassins Creed 186 is still pulling in the money, it's just disappointing.
I've got two Etrian Odyssey games on 3DS. If you don't have that system and you like dungeon crawlers, I'd definitely recommend them. That said, the 3DS seemed like such the perfect platform for these games, it almost seems wrong to play them on Switch. Oh yeah, and they take me FOREVER to beat. I've still got one more to go on 3DS, so I'm going to have to pass on these.
I've been playing this game for the last fest days, and it's amazing! It's kind of like Etrian Odyssey, but with all the cute stripped out and permadeath thrown in for good measure. But the turn based combat with a front and back line and dungeon crawling through a grid based map is much the same. But there's enough to set it apart so while it does feel familiar, it still stands on its own.
@VoodooTrumpet I don't know that what this game has can be called a twist. It shows you right at the beginning what's going on. I liked this game but my favorite in the series is House of Ashes where a bunch of Marines run afoul of Akkadian demons. And it's nice to see an ancient culture other than Egypt, Rome or Greece as a setting for a game.
I'm not sure how to rank the Wii remote and Wii U game pad against the other controllers because they were more than just another controller. When they were used well, they were amazing. But when all you needed was traditional controls, sometimes they were more of a hindrance. As far as "normal controllers," I'd have to give it to the Switch Pro controller. It's not a very exciting answer, but it's hard to beat (except in racing games were the lack of analog shoulder buttons is an embarrassing oversight). The only one I really don't like is the NES game pad. I thought those were too small and uncomfortable. That might be because I was used to Atari 2600 and 7800 joysticks, but either way, I hated those things.
@Yomerodes For their next movie, it would probably be best to stick to something Mario related. But I would like to see them branch out, but in separate franchises. I've never liked the shared cinematic universe concept and the last thing I want to see is a movie with Mario, Link, and Inklings side by side.
Two I'd rule out is (and I know people will get mad at me) Kid Icarus and Star Fox. I actually don't know much about Kid Icarus as I've never played any of the games beyond Amiibo Tap. And I doubt I'm alone in that, I don't think there's enough people in the general public aware of the franchise to make it make sense as a movie. Star Fox may be a recognizable name, but it's really fallen out of the top tier over the last 20 years. Also, I could see it working as a movie strictly for kids, but for cross generational appeal, I just don't see fighter pilots with fox and bunny heads on human bodies working. The last person to yell at me for saying that brought up Star Wars and all the weird aliens in those movies. Yes, weird aliens make sense in a galaxy full of weird aliens. But when anyone over the age of 14 sees a fighter pilot with a bunny head (or even worse, Slippy Toad), they're going to cringe.
@Euler It doesn't really do anything. It's just a hunk of plastic that holds the Wiimote. That said, holding onto the wheel does seem to make it easier to judge your turns. I have several motion control racing games, and if I don't use the wheel, the steering seems a little clumsier.
On another note, I've had this game since it first released and I didn't realize you could play it any other way than motion controls.
Well, that's a release. I still have two street pass games I've never finished. And I have three 3DS's so occassionally I'll have them tag each other so I can play them.
Obviously, Nintendo will never let this happen. But I wonder how these games would turn out. I never played a CDi but what I've heard about these games is 1. Nightmare inducing cutscenes 2. poor controls. If they improved the controls, would the games still be terrible? As someone who owns another of the 90s failed systems, the degree of awfulness of the games on failed systems is often grossly exaggerated.
I feel like I should quick download some more games before the e-shop shuts down, but... In the last six months I've downloaded so many games on top of the backlog of physical I've got, buying more at this point would just be absurd.
@StAmbrosius I'm guessing this isn't a karting game. There are plenty of those, but for people looking for a racing game that's not karts or racing sims, the field is a lot more open (apart from the "HEY, REMEMBER THE 90's?!" retro games).
@Hero-of-WiiU Maybe because Engage's story is somewhere between awful and nonexistent? I really enjoy the gameplay, but the worthless dialog that is little more than waifus and fanboys gushing about how much they love you is a huge detractor.
@Kameken While I'm not impressed with this DLC, I wouldn't agree that Splatoon has a history of selling what should be free updates. The original game on Wii U didn't have any payed DLC, and the only thing you had to pay for was Octo Expansion. And I don't know too many games that give you a second single player campaign for free. And of course their was the core game where they added more arenas, weapons and gear in the normal updates.
I bought Star Fox Zero as soon as it came out, and the disappointment was immediate. For two or three year, I didn't pay any mind to the second disc that came with it. But when I finally gave Guard a chance, I fell in love. While it seems simple and basic, I enjoyed this game to no end.
@TheBigBlue Probably because he was bored. NL covers a lot of projects that fall into that category. And the article even says he wanted to practice creating in the Unreal Engine. I wonder if he's trying to find a way to put them into practical use, or if it was really just something to play around with and nothing more. And if he is looking to do something with them, I really hope he gives options for eyes beyond solid black dots.
I really don't get the obsession with the GameCube controller. I mean, it's not bad, but it's not the greatest thing ever. I think the Switch Pro controller is clearly better except for racing games, where the analog shoulder buttons on the GC controller really worked well.
Shadow of Valentia was the first FE game I ever played. I nearly lost my mind, I loved that game so much. I later picked up Fates: Birthright and now Engage. While I enjoy both, I'm starting to worry I started with the best one and it's downhill from there.
@Selim I'm really enjoying it. No, it's not the greatest thing ever, but I like wandering around the large levels (it isn't quite a true open world), searching for collectables, seeing where all the rails go, etc. And the alter like things that send you into short levels that look like past games is kind of a cool way to mix things up, but since they are distinctly outside of the open world, it doesn't become a jumbled mess of a game like Forces. I noticed the comments here tend to be negative, but watch some videos with gameplay on YouTube. It seems to have gotten a mostly positive reception, so just watch someone play it and see if it appeals to you.
For the most part, I like the characters. But I wish they'd get over the 13-year-old girl thing. @dimi Maybe in part. But it's also showing the general trend of Japan turning away from consoles in favor of handhelds. The total sales of PS4 are only a fraction of totals sales for Switch. Other games required the touch screen so they would work in handheld mode, but not in docked.
